Slow Cooker Chocolate Lava Cake
yield: 12 SERVINGS
A gooey chocolate cake to make in your slow cooker!
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- box of chocolate cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1 and 1/4 cups milk (I used 2%)
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
Ingredients for the topping:
- 3.9 oz. size box of chocolate instant pudding (4 serving sized)
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
For Serving:
- vanilla ice cream
Directions
1
Beat together cake mix, oil, eggs, and milk with an electric mixer or stand mixer for a few minutes until batter is smooth.
2
Spray slow cooker withΒ nonstick sprayΒ so the cake won't stick. Pour mixture into the slow cooker and smooth over the bottom.
3
Beat together the 2 cups milk and pudding and pour over the top. DoΒ not stir. Then sprinkle chocolate chips over top without stirring. Cover and cook on high for 2 and 1/2 hours. You'll know when it is done when the outsides and topΒ set up like a sponge- the middle will be gooey. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
Additional Notes
(Adapted fromΒ Betty Crocker)
Notes: Your cook time will vary based on the size and shape of your slow cooker.
For instance, original recipe said 2.5 hours on low, but many reviews say that was very incorrect. I cooked mine on high for 2.5 hours with a wider shaped oval slow cooker with a larger cooking surface. If you have a taller slow cooker, it may take longer. When cooking on high, be sure to watch the cake so it doesn’t burn.
Get ready to enjoy some awesome hot lava cake that is so good and literally oozing with melted chocolate.
I made this for my work crew one night, brought some vanilla ice cream with it…AMAZING!!!
Made this for my family one day. And we all thought it was horrible.
What could possibly be horrible about chocolate cake?? π
SF you should definitely be able to voice your opinion but mixing it with a small amount of kindness would be appreciated by all. π
lynn, why? sf was saying what she thought. I don’t get it. If you don’t like something how are you supposed to mix it in with small amounts of kindness? Have a good day. Just so I don’t get a bad comment
Agreed! Nothing about the statement was unkind
This made me laugh out loud. You ladies on here are so funny/random. Hopefully that is mixed with enough kindness for you. π
I’m sorry if I came off the wrong way ladies. Not my intention at all. I just know that if someone had used the word horrible in describing something I cooked, I would feel really bad. Often it’s just the way something is said, when a gentler way of saying it is better like “it wasn’t for us or it wasn’t something I enjoyed”. I just felt bad for Lina that’s all. Sorry again.
She didn’t say the one Lina made was horrible– just the one she did. Haha. π seriously though, no biggie. I love when people try to moderate blog comments. Much ado about nothing.
But if you read the original post, Lina got the recipe from somewhere else, too, so even if it was “insulting” it wouldn’t even be toward Lina, right?
Made this with Duncan Hines and did not care for it.Tried it again using Pillsbury and my whole family LOVED it! The duncan hines seemed dry compared to the pillsbury which was really moist. Super rich though!
Pillsbury has pudding already in their cake mixes, DH doesn’t.
I am aware of that.
I’ve made this in the past. For what it’s worth, it tastes very processed to me–and I love me some boxed cake mix (once in a while, in moderation π )! It reminds me of grocery store bakery items: they’re kind of good . . . but really only when you’re very hungry or want something sweet but don’t want to make it or make a special run for “good” pastries/dessert. If that makes any sense.
I’ve read that if you add a tsp or 2 of Vanilla extract (or even strong brewed coffee to a chocolate mix) it takes thats processed taste out. I made a cake over the summer and I like to make my own buttercream frosting. I was out of powder sugar and no time to run to the store so I added a few tsp of Vanilla extract to a can of frosting I had in the pantry and no one was the wiser!
Yummy π
can you use the slow cooker liners?
Slow cooker liners are bad for you. They are made of plastic and whenever you heat up plastic the chemicals leach into your food. I wonder if you could use parchment paper or something.
I made it New Year’s Eve and it was ok but I didn’t like the texture of it when cooked in the crock pot. My daughter loved it though!!
This was a huge hit at our family Christmas party. Easy to throw together while cooking everything else, came out perfect and no leftovers π
Couldn’t resist. Got my slow cooker out and ingredients. Cooking right now…I’ll report back in 2 1/2 hours. Yum! Thanks for this easy recipe Lina.
I’m coming over with my kids!
It turned out perfect. Followed instructions exactly. For ingredients I added a pinch of cinnamon and only half the chocolate chips. I have a 6 quart oval cooker and it was done in 2 hours 10 minutes. Put a little vanilla ice cream on top. Really feeds a crowd, we have leftovers so Adrian come over with your kids lol.
Which brand of cake mix did you use? Thank you!
Betty Crocker delights super moist triple chocolate fudge cake mix.
Thank you!
I’m glad it turned out great. Let me get my 6 chocoholic boys in the car π I need to try this. Off topic, have you ever made chocolate peanut clusters in your slow cooker? I was told it’s just chocolate, marshmallows, and peanuts(or any other nut) and once everything is melted you put little scoops of it onto parchment paper. It might have other ingredients since the lady that told me doesn’t like sharing her recipes.
I know this comment doesn’t have anything to do with cake, but I’m ALWAYS intrigued by people with a lot of kids. 6 boys?? Sounds awesome. I have my 5th on the way. My son is the oldest and the rest girls with this one being a girl as well. Any tips on how to keep things rolling smoothly? Things are hectic.
I don’t do Facebook (just never got into it, kinda like β’what’s the point?” ) so I don’t have contact with people on there to ask opinions. Hopefully you’re not offended, just seeing from one large family to another (and I know there’s people who have much larger families) how you make it all work. Guess I’m just looking for advice. TIA
Wow! Let’s arrange some marriages! Totally kidding! I’m not sure I have any real advice other than teach them when they’re young. Bad habits are harder to break when you have been doing them for a long time. Also, having a routine helps. My boys are 5-15 years old. Their school day routine is basically always the same, get home from school, have a quick snack, do homework(quiet time), go to practice, etc. I never have to tell my older boys to do their homework, they just do it. Anyone know where I can find those meatless Monday recipes??
AngieO – All the recipes are under the tab “Tips” at the top of this page. The meatless Mondays are mixed in with the other dinner recipes. HTH
Uhhhh…YUM! I want to try this with homemade dark chocolate cake mix and dark chocolate chips! π
Hi ladies.. does anyone know if u can use almond,or soy milk ??? Tia
Oh my! This was INCREDIBLE! I followed the directions as written, set it at 2.5 hours, headed off to church and served it as dessert. So probably 3 hours after prep at least, and close to an hour after it finished cooking. Served with vanilla ice-cream, it was incredible! Thanks!
