Woman holding DirecTV Remote Control and cash

I made a 10-minute call to DIRECTV today and just saved $780!

Yes, it’s true! I am doing a happy dance right this second in my home office! I literally just spent around 10 minutes on the phone and am absolutely amazed that I saved myself $780 over the next year for a service that I would be using regardless! 😱

And I am confident that some of you will receive similar or possibly even more substantial discounts after you make the same call!

If you’ve been considering downgrading or canceling your DIRECTV service or you just want to discuss options to reduce costs on your account, follow these simple steps:

  1. First, dial DIRECTV customer service at 1-800-531-5000.
  2. State “cancel service” when you get to the menu options.
  3. When asked, be sure to state that you’re not moving (unless, of course, you’re in the middle of a move!). Your call will then be routed directly to the customer retention/loyalty department.
  4. Share with the customer service representative that you want to reduce your monthly bill and are looking for any special offers that may be available for your account.
  5. Within a few minutes, the representative will let you know if your account qualifies for additional savings!

Directv Remote control on top of DVR and cash

I was offered a savings of $65 per month for the next 12 months! That’s a total savings of $780!

Have you tried this recently, either with DIRECTV or another provider?

If so, please let us know what you did and how it worked!

I thought that they went out of business

    • nate

They will never go out of business when they know there are suckers that pay this much for TV. If you realize that they are now giving you a $65 credit, imagine for how long and for how much money they have been getting from you all this time.

  2. barbarameyers

Thank you so much! Just did this and saved $70 off my bill for 12 months! Also, they threw in Showtime and some sports channel for 4 months! This was perfect timing since my Dh and myself are furloughed at work right now! God bless all the Hip2Save ladies!!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

You are so welcome! Glad this can help out during difficult times, barbarameyers!

  3. Teeracey

I called to cancel because of a move & they were so nice. I was expecting a cancellation fee, but it was waived under the circumstances. I will def use them again when we can.

  4. Melissa

I called them a couple weeks ago. Our bill went from $170/month to $60. And that’s with an upgraded package. WooHoo!!!

    • Geizette

Any tips for what to say when I call?? Seems like whenever I call there aren’t any offers available for me. 🙄 I currently pay about $100 / month for the Select package with 3 dVrs. I’d appreciate any advice! 😊

      • shawn

Geizette, coincidentally I just did this yesterday. I do this routinely any way, but the last several times I called in, they were telling me nothing was available. I too had the select pkg. The representative was so nice. She said that she would try to raise my pkg just to see if any offers would trigger. That worked! So I moved up a pkg, which is only $5 more/month, but the system generated a $40 off/month offer. Win!

        • jack

I just have all the channels through cable.

      • jaksmom8

That’s the same plan/dvr’s that I have and I called about 6 weeks ago and told them that we were thinking about canceling and just using Hulu because the cost was too high and we weren’t watching that many channels anyway. He was super nice and made small talk for about 5 min. and then said he could take $40 off my bill for the next 12 months. Told him that would be great and I could probably talk my husband into keeping it. The credit went into effect immediately, we now pay just $59/month.

      • Kim

You have to tell them you are canceling so they will hook you up with their VIP people. I just got $45 off for 12 months!

    • Darlene Brehm

      Sure didn’t happen for me.

      • Jennifer Corbett

Could you please give us more on this comment ☺️

  5. redsoxgirl

I have it on my calendar to call yearly when my discount runs out. I have been lucky so far, but some friends not so much!

    • Damian Borst

You can get additional credits before your current ones expire.

  6. C.J.

I tried in November when my contract was up…the lady was nice but didn’t really have anything to offer. I had been a customer for probably 10 years. I was very disappointed.

    • Tammy

The first person you talk to usually isn’t helpful you need the loyalty/retention person. Sometimes you need to be persistent. It took 2 hours but I did get 40 off per month.

  7. Candace Garcia

Oh man we called the other day and was on hold for 2 hours and she gave us a one tome credit of 25 bucks We were hopping for something more to keep the bill what it was at.

  8. KA

I called them in January because our bill went from $77 to $142. We’ve been with them for close to 20 years. I told him we were thinking about canceling service and he offered me a $40 discount. I told him I needed at least a $60 discount to get it close to what I had been paying. In all the past years when I’ve called, they would usually work to get it within a few dollars of what I’d been paying. Not this time though. He didn’t even try anything else. Just stated he couldn’t do anything more than $40. So as bad as I hated to, I told him to cancel it. When they sent me the box to return everything, there was a note saying before I sent it back to please call for some special offers, so I did, but still $40 off was all they offered me. I did tell them I thought it was ridiculous that I had to call every year and practically beg for discounts. It has been a little hard getting used to, as we have to rely on a hotspot for streaming, so we mostly just watch the free channels. There were probably only about 20 channels we watched on DTV but of course most of those were only available on the larger package. It would be so nice if they would let you choose your own channels for your package and just charge per channel. I definitely don’t miss that $100 plus bill though. Good luck to everyone!

  9. Jeanne

Back at the end of last year my previous discounts expired and when I called them she offered me $30. off and said that was all that was available but this was a TV bill that was now going up to $260 per month. DH didn’t want to loose anything and she would not budge. I cancelled on the spot. We ended up going back to cable where we have out TV, internet and phone service bundled for $189. per month for 2 years. We will also pay $40.? for 4 months (I think) for the hockey package. Directv wasn’t able to bundle for me as internet isn’t available here. So, I would have paid $260. for TV, $90 for internet and $50. for phone or about $400 per month. It saves us over $200. per month . After I did this I received multiple calls from Directv wanting us to come back. We had been with them almost 20 years but I didn’t even listen to what they had to say at this point because I am in another 2 year contract now. Directv changed so much when AT&T bought them. Before that they were always willing to work with me but not after that.

  10. Gege1804

I did it last time and the people changed my plan without telling me. Yep they gave me a discount and changed my plan that took out lots of channels.

  11. rebecacha

Has anyone had any luck with Comcast (Xfinity)? I pay $99 plus taxes for the basic triple play (landline, internet and cable), after all taxes and fees is about $145.00 per month but really, I only need reliable internet. When I have called in the past, they offered me a $10 discount losing the landline…I was hoping for a better discount. Any advice is appreciated! 🙂

    • Bunny

Call them back and ask them what they would charge for internet only. Or internet & cable. If you’re only using your cellphone and not using your landline, definitely get that taken off. Landline phones have lots of extra taxes added on–911 fees, state & local taxes, etc. When you look at the itemized charges for landline you will be amazed how costly it is.

      • MammaK

I have a land line and it only cost me $9.99 a month

    • jen s.

If all you need is internet just cut the cord! Streaming is awesome… I vote for roku with youtube tv and Netflix add-ons. But that’s just me 😉

  12. HBee

Awesome day when when the Direct TV dish came off my roof…

    • frugal-fit-sexy

Agree , such an eye sore

  13. Taryn

The 1-800 number doesn’t seem to work this morning

    • Tom

      Called 18002882020 and it worked.

  14. Tom

Thank you so much I got $60 taken off my bill every month for a year and a fiber internet upgrade for $4 more a month than what I was already paying!

  15. Pat

Thank you so much. I called and got $70 off per month for the next 12 months.

    • Ashley

Been calling every month since February 2020 and every month they tell me there is no loyalty offers available for me so I told them to disconnect come June… Every year for the past 7 years they have had discounts up until February.

  16. ncmom

Thanks so much! Our bill is down by $55 a month!

  17. RD

Called to reduce my bill. Spent 30 minutes on Phone with a rep who spoke poor English. Much of the time I was on hold while the rep “searched” for better packages. She offered me $5 per month off and we were eliminating some services to reduce the bill. I found this page, and I asked the rep if she would forward me to a loyalty representative at the end of the call. She did, and the loyalty rep reduced my bill $70 per month in addition to the $5 discount, and added back my channels for 6 month free trial.

  18. rmellenhead

I have not had any luck with this lately. Every time I call and talk to the loyalty department they just say there are no promotions available for my account. I guess I need to threaten leaving?

    • Denise

Sometimes you need to actually set a disconnect date to get a better deal. I’ve been doing this for the last two or three years. They always tell me there are no offers available so I tell them I want to disconnect, and set the date about seven to ten days from when I talk to them. They have always called me back with a really good deal. Last year I got $100 in discounts and a $200 Visa gift card that I used to pay my bill. Now, my normal bill is around $53 a month. Just make sure you answer your phone even if you don’t recognize the number because it will not show up as Directv. It’s a pain to have to do that every year but because we live rural, it really our only option. Our internet is not good enough to support streaming. Good luck!

  19. R

I just got off the phone with directv, I got $85. off my bill for the next 12 months. they put me on hold and ended up at the directv VIP dep 866-548-1563 the rep. managed to get me the $85. deal.

    • Nik

$85 a month! Wow!!! What exactly did you say to get the deal?

  20. Rob

Even though DirecTV is bleeding customers, you have to actually cancel. Used to get reductions after 2 year contract, but no more.. offered $5 off, even with customer retention. I cancelled, took my equipment to a local UPS store to ship it all back for free. I no sooner got home, and got a call from DirecTV offering me great deals (for 1st year anyways to come back). They said no problem we will just ship new equipment to you and send out installer. Thanks but no thanks. Got Roku Ultra’s for all TV’s, plus YoutubeTV, Netflix, HBOgo, Hulu and paying $70/month. Was > $140 with DirecTV with no premium channels.

  21. Beverly

I called the VIP department today a got a $70 discount and free HBO for a year. I told them I had a problem with my bill it went from $88 to $133 plus they charged me for something i didn’t order said no problem, my bill is now $54 a month, it worked. thanks

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Wow! That’s great, Beverly! Thanks for letting us know how much you were able to save! You’re SO very welcome!

  22. Preston Crupe

I just talked to Direct Tv today because the bill changed 12 month part. I asked about reducing my bill and now all of a sudden I have an email saying I agreed to a 24 month contract extension… I did not authorize a contract extension… Any thoughts on what I can do?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh bummer! Sorry to heat that, Preston. Maybe try calling in to customer service to see if they can look into it for you. Hoping it is resolved soon!

  23. Boraxo

For about 15 years it was easy to call and get a deal from retention department. Last year this changed and like others I was forced to actually cancel service in order to get a “new customer” promo. In June 2019 we cancelled, went on vacation, returned home, and was offered $65/mo discount + free HBO for 1 year. Deal just expired and our bill went from $68 to $140/month.

Called Directv and the best offer was $25/mo discount (just like last year)- ridiculous. Told them to cancel service and I will sign up for Comcast promo which is literally $20/mo added to my current internet service.

Will report back on new offers after we switch

  24. Frank F

Bill went up $74 over previous month. Called Direct and after a few minutes of them trying to change my package they offered $70 off the same package for 6 months. I took it and will have to go through the song and dance in 6 months. No contract which is good. Going to research Hulu and YouTube TV. I know they would be cheaper but my internet isn’t the fastest and would lose some channels I currently have.

    • dave

how long do you have to wait on hold

  25. AD

I spoke to direct TV retention department today. They offer $70 off and $85 off to keep you in their pay account for only 6 months. If they will not give you $85 then hang up and talk to a new agent. they gave me $85 which is $510 saving in 6 months. I am going to have to find a different option as this “game” DTV plays, owned by ATT, is to extract as much money as they can from their customers. Everything ATT buys goes to hell. This is not the first time.

  26. Larry S

I saved $80 for month 1 and $70 for months 2-12 for a total of $850 for the year! Thank you!

  27. Danno

As a long-term customer of Directv, I’ve been used to the hassle of having to call in every year or so to keep any loyalty credits going (which keep the monthly bill somewhat affordable). Before AT&T took over Directv, it was somewhat easy to get directly through to the customer loyalty division. Since AT&T took over, it has been much more of an arduous task.

But, it’s worth the hour or so of on-hold phone time waiting to be transferred to someone who can issue the credits. I just got off the phone and renewed a 12-month $40 credit ($480 total).

  28. Luka

I had a great experience last year where they lowered my bill from $156 to $78 and sent me a gift card. The credits expired and I phoned back today (bill was up to $156 again) and it was much more difficult. The people were friendly but I was consistently offered a $55 a month credit for 12 months, which is higher than last year. It seemed that was the best I could do.

  29. mike

I just called They lowered my bill by $40 a month for a year and gave me nfl ticket for free this season.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

SWEET! Thanks for letting us know the savings you were able to score, Mike!

    • Brian

      NFL ticket for free?

  30. Zach

I just tried. The only savings they would offer was to drop to a lower package and turn in two Dtv receivers, no special. I set a cancellation date. Hopefully they will call with a deal. I am only at the end of 12 promo and still have 1 year on my contract though.

    • Zach

Update: After I scheduled the cancelation date they called me back the same evening. Offered me 40$ off monthly rate without a change in programming, a 100$ gift card, and the nfl ticket (400$ option) for free. They also said they will call back in a month or two with a better promotion. Again this was after 1 year into my 2 year contract when my promo rate expired. I did not have to agree to another 2 year contract.

  31. Marina Saravia

Just got my bill reduced by $35 a month for the next 12 months and also got Showtime for free for the next four months. Thank you thank you thank you loyalty department

  32. Vicki Tharp

I just called Directv and was offered $70 off per month for 12 months PLUS free NFL Sunday Ticket Max for the year. That’s something like $1150 savings! 🙂

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Woohoo! That’s SO awesome, Vicki!! 🙌💃🎉

  33. Thomas

my bill went from $75 to $180..i called and said i couldn’t afford new monthly payment and to shut it off..the woman didn’t even try to work with me just said ok..

  34. Dave McEvoy

I have been trying for a couple of months with the same plan. They don’t offer me any deals anymore like they used to. The last call I got #35 off for a month. I think I will just call again today and just cancel. I had to do that 2 years ago and then after switching to Spectrum for a month, Direct TV called me and gave me a great deal. I think they’re about to be bought so they’re not offering any deals anymore.

  35. Bill

Called the other day and all they said that had available was $20 off per month and I was finishing up a $30/month discount. Years ago I had $70 off along with a year of HBO and the NFL Package. This may have been either before or just after AT&T took over. They suck and will be canceling shortly after doing a few trials on IPTV services.

  36. Cheryl

Trying it today. I will post my results. Last year was $60 off, year before was $50 off (per month)

  37. Cheryl

Well, the nice gal in Florida (Becky, i think) offered me $35 off a month at first. But then i asked if there were any movie package deals or anything to get it lower. Even asked about Veteran discount. She looked a little more and said she could get me $45 off a month. It’s not as good at the $50 and $60 of previous years, but still a good savings. And with 2 premium channels, under $100 a month is good

  38. Adam

I’m glad you all were able to get somewhere. After 15 years with them, they wouldn’t offer me anything other than downgrading my package and I have my service scheduled to be canceled in January. I can’t see paying $200 a month for tv with so many other options available.

  39. Paul K.

I just tryed tonight and was told there was no current offers available, but the offers come and go so to try again at another time.

  40. Marchell

I have been calling the retention department every year for the last 4 years. I think its really WRONG of them not to offer a flat rate for at least 2 years. Last year the lady told me she would call me back but didn’t instead she just gave me a $65 credit for the next 12 months which got me to $57.38 a month now it’s time to call again since my bill went up to $117.98 a month. I’m not sure what I’m going to do 🙁

    • Paul k.

Did you get anything, curious if I should call back. I don’t know why they don’t offer renewed contracts every 2yrs likes Cox cable to retain customers with a discount to sign a 2 yr agreement.

    • Billy R Brooks

I called yesterday. No no no

  41. Cole

OK, so If I’m midway through the 2nd year, are they even going to listen to me since in theory they have me for a full 2 years? Or do I have to wait for month 25 to call them? I’d really like to get an offer like I had for the $60 off/mo. and FREE NFL Sunday Ticket.

  42. Billy R Brooks

I tried it yesterday 1/21 2021. They stated there is nothing for me. If I wanted to cancel i was no longer under any commitment. They rather cancel than help during this pandemic time. I have been a customer for several years. Also have internet and Cell phones with AT&T. They get over $400.00 a month from me.

    • Myndy

I just got off the phone with them and was not happy with them not removing the late fee that I should not have been given. I told her I was probably going to cancel and she offered to connect me with the loyalty department. I declined since I would rather use them when I want/need a bigger discount on my package instead of just $6.00.

  43. Emili

We recently called to see if there were any promotions available as well. We have the select package and it also went up quite a lot. They kept saying they had no available offers. So we told them we wanted to cancel. A couple of days before it was time to have it shut off I called again to pay the final bill and they offered me a year for only $11.69 a month. I told them to go ahead and leave it on.

  44. Charles McCarthy

Update April 20, 2021. 10 year customer here, and I just canceled. My bill was 59.95 when I started with Directv and I’m still on exactly the same plan 10 years later and my bill is $159. I have called 3 months in a row asking for a discount and was told each time that nothing was available. I just called retention and told them to cancel if there was nothing available and that’s exactly what they did. In this day and age of constant cord cutting and declining cable/sat subscriptions across the board, they elected to let a tier 1 loyal customer walk. If that is their business strategy, I will gladly accept that. I also made it a point to sell all of my AT&T stock, because clearly they have lost their way.

    • Michael cook

I was told same thing tonight we have been with them 12 years.

    • Rhonda Hunt

I just went through the exact same thing. On hold right now to cancel, I’ve been cut off twice.

  45. Rhonda Hunt

I just went through the exact same thing. On hold right now to cancel, I’ve been cut off twice. Been a customer for over 20 years.

  46. Diane Looyer

    It worked, thanks

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      GREAT! You’re so welcome!

    • Karen Wolff

      What worked

  47. Kzinger66

Where are you people at? I pay 285.73 per month! Have been with Direct tv for 20 + years would love to pay half what I do!.

  48. Erica

    Any deals for November 2021??

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

I’m not finding a current offer. We’ll keep an eye out!

  49. Leigh

Has anyone had any luck with Dish Network? I would like to get my bill lowered
