This is an awesome reward perk for those of us who head into Starbucks and plan to hang out for a while to visit with friends, enjoy a book, have a study session, or maybe get in a few hours of work! Plus, since this perk is valid with any beverage purchase, you can first order a specialty drink and then order a regular drink to take home or on the go.
How to score your free Starbucks refill(s):
- Become a Starbucks Rewards Member by signing up here – it’s free
- Order ANY beverage in-store or via mobile order
- Enjoy your original beverage in-store – this is important as you must not leave the restaurant or you will forfeit the refill perk!
- Take your empty cup to the register
- Order any cold brew coffee or hot/iced coffee or tea
- Scan your Starbucks Rewards Card
- Enjoy your free refill! Easy peasy!
And the best part – you can do this process as many times as you want as long as you stay inside the Starbucks store. You cannot leave and come back later OR take advantage of this offer via the drive-thru. Once you leave the store, your visit has ended and any new coffee or tea refill thereafter is considered a new purchase.
PLUS, if your Target has a Starbucks cafe inside, you can enjoy the free refills perk there too!
Hip Tip: Order your beverage before shopping and grab your refill before you leave! So smart!
Some things to keep in mind…
- Your refill drink needs to be the same size as the drink purchased. So if you order a Grande, your refill will be Grande.
- The refills do not include lemonade or iced tea infusions, such as the Strawberry Acai Lemonade Starbucks Refreshers.
- The refills do not include handcrafted beverages, such as the frappuccinos and espresso drinks.
- There is no limit on the number of refills or the length of the visit.
- Starbucks Rewards Members of any level will receive a free refill. If you are not a registered Starbucks Rewards Member, you can still enjoy a refill for 50¢.

Has this been confirmed that it is for absolutely any beverage?
It is not valid on handcrafted drinks like frappuccinos.
The original purchase can be anything. The item limit applies to the refill.
Its a trick of words. Starbucks is not offering anything here, that every other restaurant in the country isnt offering. Everybody offers free refills. As for At Starbucks, your refill is regular coffee, not the cafe drinks. Buy a cafe drink first, your refill is only regular coffee. Big fckng deal.
They must be lobbying to reopen offices. My friends are very upset at having to return to work.
How many sweet, syrupy drinks do you need?
It’s only for coffee, tea, and cold brew. It is not for specialty drinks. They have been doing it for years. It’s definitely not a “new thing”. It used to be just coffee and tea, before cold brew came out. 🙂
Will this work on refreshers?
It states in the article it does not work on refreshers.
Is cold brew just cold black coffee??.. I really don’t know!
It’s brewed differently so supposed to have a deeper but also slightly sweet flavor compared to typical black coffee.
Its basically iced coffee (which you can also get as your refill). It’s brewed at a lower temperature so it’s slightly smoother – and then served over ice, with or without cream, milk, sweetener, etc. it’s delightful in simmer!
Cold brew is coffee that is actually brewed cold, like steeping tea. Hot brew is where hot water pours over the coffee grinds.
If i order a drink using stars, am i still eligible for the refills?

Anyone know if they charge you for non dairy cream on the refill?

I had a store refuse to honor this policy. I had ordered a hot chai latte and asked for a cold brew coffee for my refill. I was told I could only refill with a hot brewed tea. My daughter used to work for Starbucks and I knew that was NOT the policy, but I’m not about to argue over a drink. I emailed their customer support and they apologized and refunded me the price of my original drink with a note saying they would be contacting the store manager.
