Creating new desk from trash

Check out how Hip2Save reader Jennifer used one person’s trash and inexpensive Dollar Tree finds to create a fun desk space that her daughter will treasure.

Desk transformation

“I picked up these separate wood cubbies from our neighbor who had them set by the road for trash. Never overlook trash finds, as another person’s trash may be your treasure!

My daughter had been wanting a desk for a while. We needed a custom desk for her playroom since it’s an odd shaped room. I spotted these and knew they would work out perfectly for what we needed (plus double as storage for her stuff). I brought them home, cleaned them, and painted them white with leftover paint from previous projects. I attached a board that we already had to the top – and we had a desk!

Dollar Tree organization

I used mostly Dollar Tree finds for storage and decor. The hanging terrarium with succulent is from Dollar Tree along with other succulents on the desk. The Hello Sunshine galvanized sign, bubble gum machine, magnets on the board, sequin bins, blackboard, whiteboard, and little clothespins are all from Dollar Tree. Behind the sequin bins, we also used clear storage containers with white lids for storage.

Dollar tree is a great place to look for inexpensive organization!”

So resourceful!

Some ideas from repurposed items are so original & unique. Esp if u have a good imagination, then the options are endless. High five to some of the ideas (including this one) ive seen on H2S

How did you attach the cubbies to each other and the board to the cubbies?

    • michelle

It kind of looks like wood glue maybe? I don’t see any screws or nails. I’m curious too! Darling!

    • Jenny

I used screws and screwed them in to the top from inside of cubby. Also used metal brackets underneath the middle part to attach.

90% of the furniture in my house is from the trash or garage sales. I can’t believe what people throw away. I wish people would take the time to compost, recycle and donate. People would not even need “trash” service just recycle service. Landfills are awful. Just think of all the metal and glass that is there that could be 100% reused. Most people don’t care where it goes. Out of sight, out of mind.

Agreed. One of my neighbors was throwing out a like new rabbit hutch that retails for $150, and my son’s rescue rabbit has a nice home for free. In my area some people go around picking the night before garbage pickup because there are so many good things to be had. I am not that hardcore, but I do browse when I am out and about. You never know what you might find. Plus, our landfills don’t need to be filled with things somebody else would be happy to use.

I agree. There are several places that will come and pick up your items so there is really no excuse. We donate to Goodwill, ReStore, a clothing closet (that gives folks who need them for free), etc. My son’s school has a bin for textiles – they attempt to sell, reuse or recycle everything. It’s great for items that are clean but too worn or stained to donate. I also put all of our random mismatch socks in there a few times a year! LOL I love that our recycling bins are overflowing and we’ve managed to get our garbage bags down to 1 – 2 a week but still a work in progress!

Since Christmas my husband started doing this. Last week he saw a dumpster loaded with stuff. He rang the doorbell and asked if he could take stuff if it was ok. They said sure, we have too much STUFF! He brought home 4 loads in our mini van. Some he scrapped out, some was donated to Goodwill. The point is repurpose things and keep them from the landfills! We actually enjoy doing this.
