This Reader Made a Birthday Display Snack Box Using Items from Dollar Tree

Personalized birthday decor is always the best!

Birthday parties have become quite the event in recent years, and so has the price-tag! Remember when we were kids and a birthday party consisted of a cake, pizza, balloons, and streamers? Those days may be gone, but you can still throw your kiddo a birthday bash to remember without breaking the bank just by doing some simple DIYs!

One of our Hip2Save readers, Sweetklouise, has made the most adorable DIY personalized snack and display boxes for her nephew’s birthday! Check out her story…

“My nephew was turning three and having a barnyard animal themed party. He LOVES snacks (a boy after my own heart ha) so I wanted to figure out a neat way to put his snacks together. My sister also used this as a display since she loved it so much! You could do this so easily for any theme.

I purchased a styrofoam wreath and some yellow tulle from the dollar tree. I wrapped the wreath with the tulle and hot glued the end so it wouldn’t come apart. I then made the cow, sheep, and pig from felt, cotton balls (for the sheep), and eyeballs. My hot glue gun was my best friend during this project by making sure everything stayed on well. I made the tractor from popsicle sticks. I painted them the color I wanted and cut them in half for the right sizes. I used felt and colored foam paper for the wheels. I then glued the snacks on.

The box also holds snacks in the animals. I got a cardboard box and cut the flaps off. I super glued felt for grass around the box and cut it according to size. I used letter stickers to put his name on the front and cow stickers from Michaels to place next to his name. I put some straw in the box for the “hay” and made another popsicle tractor. I super glued it all to the straw to help keep it in place. I used little cardboard circular containers (I got them cheap at Michael’s using a coupon – they always have a coupon) to make the animals, as well as felt, eyeballs, and cotton balls.

I glued cotton balls all around the box for the sheep and decided that box wouldn’t hold snacks. But the pig and cow’s lids did hold snacks! I then used horses I had (they were from McDonald’s happy meals) and glued on felt to make a saddle. My nephew loves Spirit so that was a bonus. I used some sunflowers from fake flowers from the dollar tree. I used a number 3 and made a cowboy halt from felt. I cut a star out from yellow foam paper to include on the hat. I painted the cowboy hat brown because I didn’t have brown felt. It made it stiff after it dried and helped it to not be flimsy!

It turned out so cute and perfect that everyone in my family now wants one for their birthdays LOL. Even my 90-year-old Grandpa! An added tip: to carry in your car or wherever without making a mess, I put the box inside a bigger box to keep all of it in place. Easy peasy!”
