Keepsake out of hockey sticks

This is such an awesome keepsake!

Hip2Save reader, Michelle, and her husband came up with a unique and thoughtful keepsake to give to the senior girls hockey players on Senior Recognition Night. We can only imagine the huge smiles on their faces that night (and for years to come!) as they remember their high school hockey days! ❤️

clamps holding sticks together

My husband and I repurposed old hockey sticks and made these cool keepsakes for the high school senior girls hockey players. We cut the sticks into 9″ pieces, mitered the corners, used wood glue to secure the corners, and clamped the assembly together using a band clamp from Amazon.

making hockey desk stands

We had some 2×6 old cedar decking and ripped the boards into 4 thin slices to cover the back and glued them into place. I found some rusted metal shapes of Minnesota on Etsy.

We used a heavy duty construction adhesive and clamps to glue it onto the deck boards. Drilled a hole in the lower back middle and placed a 4″ dowel inside the hole to make it stand up on a desk.

DIY hockey frames

The finishing touch was to cut out a stencil on my silhouette cameo and stenciled the hockey sticks with their graduation year on the back for a fun keepsake for years to come.

Many of the players are going to school out of state and this will be a warm reminder of their hockey season and the place they call home. The parents and players loved this unique, handmade, thoughtful gift they received during Senior Recognition Night!

What a unique gift idea!

Thank you so much for the kind comment! This made my day!

This is such a nice idea! My husband used to take the old hockey sticks and use them to hold plants up outside, plant stakes! People used to laugh at our hockey stick garden!! This is a much better idea!

Thank you! I am always looking for ways to repurpose items instead of throwing them away too! I love the hockey stick garden idea! Too funny!

  4. ReneeAnn

Love it! You could start taking custom orders with photos too and make it a side business!

    • WestbergFive

Yes, if I didn’t already work full time, I would definitely consider having a side business. I plan to do this once I retire or when we are officially empty nesters! I am glad you liked them!

This is lovely! And for those who don’t want to build the whole frame with the backing board, or who want a typical picture frame with a removable back and a glass front, I think it would be easy to build just the hockey stick part and glue it to an existing frame.

      Good idea! Thanks for commenting!

These turned out great! What a cool memento to take with them into college and beyond. The love you guys put into these shines through. 🙂

    • WestbergFive

Thank you! It was a fun project and I am always up for a challenge. My daughter is a junior and she and her class are already asking my husband and I to make one for each of them next year! I guess I need to collect some more hockey sticks!

  7. Sheila

A really great idea! I bet all the students and their parents loved them.

    • WestbergFive

Everyone loved them. They couldn’t believe that we made them. It is always special to receive something hand made!
