If you have a little one that presently drinks Similac formula, be aware that Similac just released a voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand infant powder formulas.

Why is Abbott recalling these products?

An internal quality review detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

What Similac powder infant formulas are being recalled?

* Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
* Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
* To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, click here (you will need to type in your lot number to determine if the product is affected) or you can also call 800-986-8850.

No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted. Products not involved in the recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare ®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure ®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

What do I do if I have an affected product?

* Click here or call Abbott’s consumer hotline 800-986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
* Both the website and the consumer hotline have specific details on how to complete the return process.

**Keep in mind that the phone hotline has an extremely long wait AND the Similac web-site is running very slowly!

They told me to return it to the store I bought it from.

  2. kristi

Well that just sounds disgusting! Thanks to an awesome hip2save reader who posted a comment about the walgreens formula sale a couple months ago, I switched my daughter from similac to walgreens brand for $3 per container. Saving money and no beetles!

I am so glad you posted this. I email you about it this morning because the only way I found out was from a co-worker! My son’s happened to be one of the ones recalled. They did say to take it back to the store you bought it from and if they wouldn’t take it back that you could send it directly to Abbott via the instructions on the site. My son has been extremely fussy these past two days and wouldn’t eat well and my Mom and I thought he must be teething. Guess not!! So, so scary!!

    • kristi

      Tiffany,
It is scary! We had a bunch of the Children’s tylenol that had been recalled. You trust these companies to have good products and keep your children safe. I hope your son feels better soon!

      • Tiffany C.

I know! Thanks so much. I’m sure he will be fine but I worry about the one day that it won’t be ok..

    • Melissa A

My son just turned one and I thought I had bought my last container this weekend. It was contaminated. I got a call from daycare the other day saying he wouldn’t eat, which is VERY abnormal for him. Luckily a coworker brought this to my attention yesterday and I was able to stop daycare from feeding any more to him. I bot the last 3 bottles of ready to pour that my WalMart had on the shelf, as well as a gallon of whole milk. What better time to start transitioning! And to whoever said they didn’t know whether to be mad or upset, BE BOTH! We expect companies to provide us safe product to give our children, especially infants who are so reliant upon formula as a main staple of their diet!
Thank you Collin for posting it!

Thankful I’m cheap and usually don’t buy name brand unless the coupons make them cheaper then the generic. This is SO scary….poor lil ones!

I was just coming over to warn you and your readers about this. I just posted it on my site. I am using the similac advance right now and my daughter was born this month on the 2nd. She has had major gas problems non stop. I wonder if we have contaminated formula. The site is running super slow just to warn all of you. Best of luck. I’m feeling sick that I may have been giving my baby girl formula with bug parts in it.

  6. Julie

Thank you for posting! I just checked my formulas (one is almost gone) and both are recalled!!! GROSS I cannot believe I have fed my baby an entire container of this stuff. Good thing I have not opened the other yet.

    • Tiffany C.

From what I have seen, the RB & T2’s are the ones that are being recalled. If these letters are in the Lot number you need to stop using. My mom went to Walmart today and was shopping for a new brand to give my son since his was recalled also and the Walmart employee was there with the buggies unloading the shelves of anything Similac!! The man at the register told my Mom to simply bring the formula container back to them; no receipt necessary, for a FULL REFUND!! I am sick to death that my son had been drinking this for over 5 months! Yuk!

    • Aleshia Horner

They will take it back even if it’s opened. I took one container back and it was almost gone and they still gave my money back.

  7. Debbie

VERY SCARY! I’m grateful my son has outgrown formula. I use to buy Similac at Walmart and always made sure I had coupons, until I moved and was near a Sam’s Club. I started buying their brand. My son didn’t notice a difference, I never had issues with recalls or anything and I got twice as much formula for less. Member’s Mark brand.

  8. april

I don’t know if I am more mad or wanna cry. I have 6 cans contaminated. Lot number for my contaminated container is: 85498rb. my 1 can that is not is: 87060re

  9. kim in co

My son ate a whole tub and was starting a new one…….both were recalled. 🙁 He was throwing up yesterday and been crazy fussy. No wonder. Poor baby. They want us to return them to the store but I dont have my receipts. Thank goodness walmart said they would take it without a reciept.

  10. Niki

I couldn’t get through on the website but I called our local health department and they have a list of all the recalled numbers, so you might want to check with your health department if you are having difficulties.

  11. Laura

Thanks for posting this info. It’s been a crazy morning at the daycare where I work in the Infant Room! We have 10 babies whose parents had to be called about the recall. 4 of our babies drink it but we hope to have caught it in time. The moms have all had their formulas replaced and we should be okay. We had a bunch of cranky, hungry ones til we heard though!

  12. april

Another update: I just spoke with a manager at the store I got ours at. She told me her fax said any lot containing letters “rb” is on recall. Any with “re” is not on recall. Hope this helps you all out

  13. Kristen

Can I ask what the rest of you plan to do? Switch to generic? Use the ready to feed? Buy the smaller container (of the Sensitive)?
    I’m just not sure…
    Kristen

    • Tiffany C.

It might be something you want to call your pediatrician to ask. My pediatrician told me to change to a generic. She said everything is just as healthy for them with the generic. We decided to go with Parent’s Choice. $11.99 vs. $21.99. Ultimately, it is saving me money and saving my son the un-needed protein 😉

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m freaking out right now–where is the lot number located on the can?

    • Deeanna

On my container it’s on the bottom of the can above the use by date.

      Example (the product number)
      Use By date

      Hope this helps you out!

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

        Thank you so much

        890979V00
        Does that look like it?

        • Deeanna

          yes, mine reads 86772t20

  15. Mic

Here is a list of all the recalled lot numbers for those of you who haven’t been able to access the Similac site:

    87932T20, 88117T26, 78208T2,88136T20,91433t20,800-986-8850,800-545-5216,800-515-7677,800-986-8800,847-937-6100,(847) 935-8865,(847)935-3456,66128RB6,61251 RB6,61347RB,84314 RB,85454 T2,86580 T20,88137T20 and 90372T20.

    • Shirley

I did get through on the site and that is not all the recalled #s. They have a pdf on there where you type in your # and it searches 35+ pages of recalled #s. They say if you have a plastic tub it is more than likely recalled. I have two purchase at 2 different times and both are recalled.

  16. Ellie

All of the Similac Sensitive RS just about is recalled. Also check your free cans they send you in the mail when expecting….one that I received was recalled. I can’t take it back and my daughter was half way through the can but at least she is fine. Tell preggo friends to check if they have gotten the one’s from Similac.

  17. Danielle

I exclusively breastfed my son for his first 5 months and then he started getting formula during the day while I worked and I nursed him on lunch breaks (I work in the same daycare center that he is at.) I brought him to the doctor in July for gastrointestinal problems – he was excessively spitting up and not gaining weight. The can he was using is one of the batch. I am just going to be upping my nursing/pumping schedule again. I know what goes in and out of those!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

GOOD FOR YOU! SO glad I don’t have to worry ONE BIT about what’s in MY milk!

  18. MegaFavored

Thank you so much for posting this. It is disgusting. And I am so glad that I was able to find out about this through your site. My daughter was totally reacting to this and I could not figure out what was causing her allergic reaction. I am so disgusted, yet so grateful to your site for finally helping to figure out what was going on. Thank you to the parent and to Hip2Save!

  19. kristina

Scary Stuff! I had called my sister JUST as she opened a new can of this and was about to feed it to her son.. LUCKILY I called and checked out the number and it was contaminated!

Since it is a RECALL you should be able to return it to the store regardless of receipt.

  20. Stephanie A.

this new pdf link works… you have to have adobe reader and if you have a T2 jug the letters have to be in caps or it will register as recalled. you can also find it on the similac site but i dont know how many people are able to get it to load

    https://abbott.vo.llnwd.net/o18/similac/sms/pdf/recall.pdf

    • Stephanie A.

      **register as NOT recalled… sorry!

  21. DEBBIE LANFORD

Does anyone know if 91573T20 was recalled? I can’t get through on the website or on the phone and have been trying all afternoon. I appreciate the help!!

    • Stephanie A.

yes this one was recalled… they posted a pdf on similac.com that has a list of all the recalled lot numbers

      • DEBBIE LANFORD

Thank you, Stephanie! I finally got the pdf to open up. I was able to return the formula to Target with no issues. Thanks again!

  22. Nicole

I save the formula containers after they are emptied for my husband to store small things in the basement. I checked all their numbers and according to the PDF, I have (4) 23.2 oz. tubs and a 12.9 oz. can that were all recalled that my son has consumed! Not happy!

    • Amber

Nicole, thats nothing. I have a 10 month old & I have saved almost all of her containers (also use to put little things in to keep organized) and 29 of them are on the list! This thing goes back farther than most people think. I have some of her first cans from back in February and they are recalled. I know they are probably recalling everything from that line to cover their bums, but really? All the way back to February? I am so mad, upset, angry, worried and a myriad of other emotions right now thinking I may have fed my daughter bug parts for 8 months!! We switched to Good Start for these last two months, because liquid is so much more expensive & I dont know if I can trust Similac anymore.

  23. ayesha

i got the sample from them this one is on recalled too….those who got the sample laso check …

  24. Kelly K

Great! I have a container here, on the recall list!! that I barely have enough left to make one bottle of for one of the little ones I babysit! (Thankfully they provide the food so its not like I bought it!) I just tried to call his Momma (he’s not here today) and got to leave her a voicemail about it! She is a mom who worries a lot to begin with…. great, just great!

  25. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow! I was at Wal Mart today and a guy was trying to buy some of these, but it rang up as recalled. He was on a self service register, but the cashier couldn’t over ride it. He still insisted on buying it. The manager had to assist. Not sure what happened, but I don’t think I would want to give my baby recalled formula. I hope you choose not to buy it.

  26. heather

I returned the container I was currently using to Wal-Mart for a full refund. Unfortuantely, they have pulled all the powders off the shelves, so we had to switch formulas today, because I was not going to buy the crazy expensive liquid version. We went with Gerber Good Start. Our pediatrician told us a month or so ago that virtually all of the formulas today are the same, so not anticipating my daughther will have any problems. Just annoying that I had to change from my “old faithful” formula.

  27. Sonya

I returned 3 containers to Similac, as per their instructions, and only got $15 coupon back! These things are $22 and up per container and I only get $15 back?!?

    • Tanya

I just received my Similac check for $21!!!! 7 cans of formula for $21??!! I paid $24 per 23.2ozs container & had 4 of them. I also had 3 12.9 ozs containers. They said they are giving $3 per can. I was told retail price. I was expecting a check for over $100….not $21! I am sooo mad. They wanted to know if I wrote down my serial #’s. I didn’t since I read them all to the rep for the boxes. They claim I returned “samples” as well. I am STEAMING MAD!!! If they don’t correct this…I will NEVER but anything from them EVER again!!!
