(Thanks, Clip and Follow and Suzy!)
Hmmm, I get a “free” trip at midnight, but it costs for the other “better” times from chicago to Milwaukee, and there is no ‘free” trip back to Chicago 2 days later—I’m not impressed!
Maybe you can only get one free ticket? Try looking them up as one-ways instead?
The best times are gone within minutes. Follow their twitter acct @megabus to know when promotions are announced or new dates are put on sale. This is how you get the $1 tickets, they offer the 1st ticket for each route for $1 and use tiered pricing for the rest of the tickets. I’ve gotten the $1 tickets many times using this strategy but you must plan months ahead for your trip.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve gotten the $1 tickets before and it’s awesome!
None in my area. DARN!
That guy’s face is the perfect pink for a pig! Hahahah!!!
I wish I wasn’t so afraid of tour buses!! When is there going to be a good deal on psychotherapy!? LOL 🙂
THIS IS AWESOME! Just scored a Free ride to Mardi Gras in New Orleans! Thanks Collin!
I can’t seem to see how this works? I entered in the code and it still charges $74 each way. Anyone know?
I would NEVER get on one of these buses.
Why not? I’m in college, and the only way to get home (without a car) is to take a bus like this. The companies make a LOT of money, because literally everyone rides them.
There is no place to park cars on campus (or even off) so people don’t bring their cars here.
My husband and I use Megabus a few times a year and we LOVE it!! You can get free, or very inexpensive fairs (like $1 each way if you’re looking at the right time), you don’t have to drive, or pay for gas!! We have always had fantastic experiences!!!
Especially in comparison to buses like Greyhound, Megabus is awesome. I’ve taken it from St. Louis to Chicago and always find it very comfy and clean. Plus free WiFi!
whoop whoop…i just booked my trip from stl to chi for 3 ppl for .50 booking fee.
I agree with you Deb. There have been a lot of high profile fatal accidents with megabuses in the last 2-3 years, including one that happened in my local area. Some of these accidents were because of driver error, but still … I would google safety of megabuses before you get on one.
Keep in mind bus accident make headlines on the news, car accidents normally don’t. Cars are actually the most dangerous way to travel.
According to the Department of Transportation, here are the average fatality rates from 2006 – 2008:
Scheduled airlines: 0.003
Commercial buses: 0.05
Passenger trains: 0.06
Automobiles, including taxis: 0.61
code not recognized? can anyone help. This is great for college students!
Thank you so much Collin! My husband has to travel to Philadelphia to take the bar exam in February and now he can get there for free 🙂
Just got super cheap tickets for my brother in college to come visit us. Thanks Collin!
LOL going from Pittsburgh to DC in January… $.50 for three of us. Any deals on hotels? lol
Gotta’ try priceline. Look up the bidding forums for lowest price possible.
We stayed @ a fabulous boutique hotel-the George, near train station.
U can walk to the Smithsonian. Attentive customer service, mini bar in room, very comfortable beds. Bar & restaurant downstairs. Great Irish pub around the corner too.
We’ve also stayed @ the Hilton in Arlington-everyone takes the Metro to get around.
Do try to drive to Annapolis.
same here. We are going from Raleigh to Dc jan 12-15th…just now looking for hotels. got our tickets for $1.50. excited!
I don’t mind Megabus, but then again I only use it from suburbs of Milwaukee to Chicago, only about 1.5 hr trip. Great deal for what I use it for 🙂
I took MegaBus from Milwaukee to Chicago many times and never had a bad experience. The trip from Milwaukee to Minneapolis was harder, but only because I can’t stand long car rides. 🙂
My parents (who are world class travelers) love the Megabus. They go from NYC to DC and back all the time. Saves on hassle and expenses. It is the only way they travel between these cities– about 5 times a year. And these people frequently cruise on Crystal and fly 1st class.
Thanks so much for this! I just booked a roundtrip ticket to visit my bf from Chicago to Iowa City for $4.50, normally costs me $40!
im in San Francisco and they are offering $1 ride. still cheap!
Megabus is one of the better bus companies around! I’ve other companies and they were just not as nice as the megabus!
No Megabus in South Florida.
Woot! Round trip tickets to take my bf to see NYC for the first time. He recently moved to PA from FL to live with me.
Anybody know how to see what trips it works for?
I think it works for the 1st person that books for that route and time. They used tiered pricing and the quicker you book, the cheaper it will be. You just have to keep checking, the best times and routes go within minutes.
I mostly always use Greyhound, but this is great! I just bought two tickets from Philly to NYC the weekend after Valentines Day. It will be a sweet one night getaway for the husband and I!!
Collin this post just made my coworker’s day! Her son and his fiancee live in Chicago (we are in STL). The two of them came home for Thanksgiving, but my friend would not be able to see them again until their wedding in Chicago in Nov. 2013. Now she gets to visit them for FREE in February. Her and 4 other family members got tickets. The smile on her face was priceless. Good job Santa!
Our family of 5 is going down to Orlando from ATL in Feb!!!! Thanks so much we are only paying .50 and I’m calling my friends to see if we can fill the bus 🙂 now we need to bid on a car and we get to stay with my husbands grandfather for free! Hey we might even listen to a timeshare for some cheap Disney tickets 🙂
Code not recognized.. help please!
It should still be working I ordered my friend one.
You still have to pay a service fee, which isn’t much but still not free.
Has anyone had a bad experience on the Chicago-Indianapolis-Nashville route? I just booked a trip from Chicago to Nashville. And I haven’t used their “free” tickets before, do they bump you from the ride if they over book? Thanks!
For those worried about safety/quality of the ride (as I do), I took megabus between NYC and Albany 3 times a week for a few months (day trips for work). I felt that route/driver part of the trip was safe and it was mostly college students and retired people going on day trips to the city. The only issue I had was outlets not working, bad wifi, and the one trip I booked out of the city during rush hour (because it was stuck in rush hour traffic). Also, be prepared for disorganization leaving the NYC stop (your wait is in lines that are formed more by customers than the staff). They keep their costs low, because they are low on staff and usually don’t have buildings for the boarding.
For those having problems getting $0.00 rates, enter the code when you look for the route and then you may have to search for different dates and times to find the free rides. Not all times/routes have free options.
BTW, you can get multiple tickets for the 50 cents if you add the additional routes through the left side of the screen when it gets to the journey confirmation screen (the one before you enter payment info).
No, you won’t get bumped, they only sell the number of seats on the bus. For holidays (like Thanksgiving and Christmas), they add extra buses to deal with increased demand. The overflow buses won’t have wifi or power outlets though.
Thanks Sara! 🙂
Can you explain how to get multiple tickets for .50? PLEASE. 🙂 I’m trying to do it but can’t find the place to add additional routes. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
The promo code does not work for me….says it is not recognized…bummer!
It says promo code not recognized…
it says promo code not recognized for me as well
HELP?!
Just called them and they are saying that they got a memo from their boss to stop it and start tomorrow morning.
I did not book a trip now but wanted to tell about my trip to Chicago from Pontiiac MI… My friend had her whole bachelorette party go for the weekend… we travelled on Megabus & it was a great experience… The driver was courteous… Bus was on time & clean… If you can get the front seats on the upper deck it is a nice experience to be able to see the road ahead… As many others have stated I saw a lot of college students… Amazing trip… Nice not to have to worry about driving… there were taxi’s right by where they dropped us off that took us right to our hotel… I would recommend this bus service to anyone looking for affordable transportation
Thanks so much for this Collin!! Just booked a trip from Boston to NYC for me & my boyfriend. Can’t beat $0.50!!! 🙂
