Create a DIY Jewelry Organizer Using a Cheap Sewing Thread Rack!
If your jewelry is a mess, try hanging it on an inexpensive thread rack as a clever DIY jewelry organizer idea.
Here’s a genius DIY jewelry organizing hack that works perfectly!
A wooden thread rack has a bunch of pegs that will also make an excellent rack for keeping necklaces, bracelets, and small accessories from getting tangled. It’s a practical system that I started using years ago and it’s only about a $10 investment that is well worth it!
I actually first shared this easy DIY jewelry organizer idea back in 2015 and still use it today! Behind the door in my closet is the spot that I decide to hang my wood thread organizers and it’s where I hang up most of my necklaces and bracelets so that they don’t get all tangled.
The best part is all you have to do is hang up the thread hanger on the wall. It could NOT be easier!
This simple jewelry organizer can work great for earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair ties, and even belts! I hung up two thread organizers on top of each other and love the creative use of storage space on my closet wall.
This easy and practical Pinterest idea I found from OneGoodThingByJilee.com worked out long-term for me and hopefully it can for you too!
Tips for creating the best DIY jewelry organizer:
- If you wanted to spray paint the wooden organizer the same color as your wall first, that would be a great idea and will look even sleeker.
- Where can I buy a sewing thread organizer? You can buy wooden jewelry organizers at craft stores such as Joann, at Walmart, or online on Amazon.com. I found mine in-store at Walmart for around $10. I often see these at thrift stores as well, so keep your eyes open next time you are thrifting. Here is a mini thread rack we spotted for just $4.99 at Joann.
- As far as hanging it, I used a drill and a couple of screws to secure it to the wall by drilling right through the front all the way into the wall. The wood is pretty thin and easy to drill through. You could also consider securing it using wall adhesive tape instead.
- It’s also worth noting that you don’t have to hang this up! If you have room on a dresser or table, then this could be arranged standing up making use of the fold-out legs.

This hanging jewelry organizer is the best!
Before I did this, my jewelry was a tangled mess stored in a few different makeup bags or boxes and wasn’t working out. Now it’s easy to see at a glance what jewelry to have to wear so it makes selecting the right piece fast and easy when getting dressed.
Here’s how it would look if you didn’t hang up the thread rack!
Since it has a stand on the back you could always place it on a table or dresser for added jewelry storage.
I love trying various organizing hacks and tips, and this one is for sure a winner!

Cute idea
Thanks! I love that it’s functional too! 💕

There’s an actual product made for this. It’s called blingeez. They’re these white plastic peg strips with adhesive. (The only issue is the adhesive, but I used command strips to hold up mine.) And when I searched this on Amazon, it’s selling for just under $10.
But I agree, it’s the best way to organize jewelry so they’re easy to find and get.
Oh cool! Thanks for sharing Amy!
I’m all about organizing and that is a great idea I’ve never seen!

I do love your DIYs, Lina. Please keep posting!❤️
Thanks so much for your encouraging words!
Great idea. I use a tie tack for my necklaces. Picked it up in a thrift store.
Oh nice! Love that idea!!
This is an amazing idea! I wish I had seen it a couple months ago when I was looking for necklace storage ideas. I ended up with another inexpensive solution. I picked up a couple of these floating shelves from Dollar Tree (https://www.dollartree.com/black-floating-shelves-8625x4x15-in/307112) and screwed cup hooks into the bottom. They aren’t super chic but I hung them behind the door in our bedroom so we’re the only ones who ever see them and there’s bonus storage on top that I’m using for my nail polish.
That’s clever, Sara! Thanks for sharing!
I’m so glad I saw this, such a great idea. I have the same wooden thread rack and was about to donate it, gasp!!!
Oh yay glad you can repurpose it!
