Some Family Dollar & Dollar Tree stores will soon close.

Dollar Tree has announced they are closing 600 Family Dollar stores this year, and another 370 stores over the next several years as store leases expire. They’ll also be closing 30 Dollar Tree stores as their leases expire.

While we don’t have an official list of locations that are closing, some news agencies have self-reported for their local stores.

The Family Dollar brand was purchased by Dollar Tree in 2015 for $8.5 billion in the hopes of going toe-to-toe with rival stores like Dollar General. Unfortunately, the Family Dollar chain has continued to struggle.

Sources report that although Family Dollar has renovated thousands of stores in recent years, other stores are still poorly maintained and have poor merchandise selection.

Family Dollar also recently received a $41.6 million fine for violating product safety standards due to the presence of significant rodent activity at one of the company’s distribution centers. An FDA inspection of the distribution center revealed live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, rodent feces and urine, dead birds and bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against contamination. These products were then shipped to stores in several states.

Already dealing with struggling stores and after receiving the largest-ever monetary criminal penalty in a food safety case, it’s no surprise that quite a few stores will be closing, as Dollar Tree had previously announced that they would be reviewing all Family Dollar stores to identify underperforming locations.

*You meant to say “Family Dollar” here instead of Dollar General. Dollar Tree does not own DG. :>)
I was interested in reading this article because in my town they have broken ground next to my Dollar General and it is rumored that they are building a new Family Dollar or Dollar Tree store! I was personally hoping it would be a $tree, since our only store is way across town here. I buy several items there every week.

Whoops! Thanks for catching that, Jane. This has been fixed. ❤️ Hoping the new development near you is a Dollar Tree to help you save on your trips across town! 🤞 We just recently had a new Dollar General built across the street from a Family Dollar. 🙃

They just built a combo Family Dollar/Dollar tree in my small town and I hate it. It is 10% DT and 90% Family Dollar. I was hoping for a much bigger selection of DT items as the closest DT is a half hour away from me. Sadly, most of the store is FD…low quality items at high prices. The only good thing I can say about it is that since it is a brand new store, it is clean.

They’re building new stores everywhere in my area

One in my area just randomly marked the entire store half off last week bc it was closing. Haven’t checked back to see if they marked down further
