Sonic Crunchy Ice

Calling all Sonic fans!

Do you love Sonic’s crunchy ice like we do? If the answer is yes, you may be excited to realize that you can actually buy this popular ice directly from Sonic!

Yes, it’s true! Many Sonic locations across the country sell a 10 pound bag of Sonic ice for around $2 per bag! This seems like a much cheaper alternative than buying a Nugget Ice Maker that sells for almost $500!

Note that prices for these 10 pound bags may vary by location and some restaurants do not sell the ice so you’ll want to call ahead before you make a special trip.

And if you haven’t already, make sure and download the free Sonic Drive-In app for iTunes or Google Play and set up an account to score freebies and discounts on food and drinks – including 1/2 price Drinks and Slushes anytime you use the app to order!

This is the best ice ever!! I’ve been buying it forever. My kids always ask for a cup of this ice 😋

  2. AP

I LIVED on this stuff during a summer pregnancy 17 years ago. (Now I assume it was pica 😳). Anyway, I’d go get a cup or two daily, I’d keep backups in my freezer. Only sonic ice. So good!

I also craved this ice during my last pregnancy! Supposedly it means you’re anemic!

      • Amanda

I craved this ice as well and took extra iron for anemia

    • shop4mybabies

i am anemic in general, and deathly anemic when pregnant, and now because of endometriosis, i crave chewing ice and it’s a symptom of anemia. I try to avoid it because it’s not great for my teeth, but I cave, a lot

    What?! Game changer!!!!

Just a tip to pass along. Try to go during non-peak hours for this ice. Especially during the warmer, summer months. They will decline to sell you a bag if demand for their drinks is high. Unfortunately, they can only produce so much ice at a time. It’s a wonderful value and one of my favorite treats!

    • Lisa

This is true. I’ve worked at 6 locations since 1994, and we don’t sell the ice at all during Happy Hour.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the helpful tip! Good to know!

Ice? As in frozen water? This may sound ignorant…. but what is so special about it?
Don’t get me wrong…. that’s a great price for a bag of ice.
But what’s all the hype about?

    • AP

I literally had to lol at this, because I imagine it does sound ridiculous for people to rave about ice. Lol. 🙂 For me, the tiny round pellets are perfect for chomping on. Unlike typical crushed ice, they are all (for the most part) the same shape and size. Not too big, you don’t have to worry about a bunch of random, jagged shapes… Having said that, I’ve never gone for cups of ice since that pregnancy (including two other pregnancies).

      • Jes

It’s the size and the shape of the ice. It’s small round barrels that are perfect for chomping on.

        • Peanut757

Is this good for making smoothies? The crushed ice from our fridge is random large chunks that don’t blend smooth.

    • Ana

Haha, I was wondering the same😳 At first I thought maybe it was flavored or like a sno-cone🤷‍♀️

  6. Shannon

It was $6 a bag in Oklahoma a few years back.

  7. LC

OMG…I have never been so excited! I love this ice!

  8. Kathy

I still remember the 1st time I went to Sonic on a trip to my Brothers in Missouri. I made them take me every day lol. After a week or so I found out you could buy a bag of ice for $1.99. I was so excited and so pissed at the same time!! haha My Brother knew I had a life long addiction to crunching ice and he didn’t even tell me for 7 days?!?! I can’t let it go. I ate a lot of ice the next 2 weeks. We are suppose to be getting a sonic but the keep extending the opening date and the nearest is 80 miles away. Hurry Sonic!

  9. RO

The Sonic near me sells it for $3.29 plus tax.
I buy a bag every week. I wish they did sell the ice for $2.

  10. Ice lover

If this is the same type of ice as at Chic-fil-a, then Sonics may be my new ice spot!!! And to find out that they sell the bag, is bliss!!!! How do you store the ice so that it doesn’t all harden together then it loses the effect?

    • Angela (Hip Sidekick)

When I buy it I try and throw my cooler in the car so it doesn’t melt then refreeze again when I get home (which makes it a giant block).

  11. Lisa Kennedy

I am truly excited to learn this!
