Finally, you can grab last-minute essentials at Walmart again!

In early March, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Walmart started closing in the evenings at 8:30 pm to give associates time to clean and re-stock the store.

Fortunately, you’ll soon be able to resume those last-minute dashes to the store. By August 17th, most Walmarts will push back their closing times to 10:00 pm. While this is not going back to their 24-hour pre-Corona schedule, this will still be a huge help to those who have to do their shopping in the later evening hours.

This is somewhat late in the game compared to Target stores, which were reported to begin staying open until 10:00 pm sometime in June.

Walmart will keep safety measures in place including social distancing, plastic barriers, and masks, but the retailer feels confident that 4,000 of their 4,700 stores are ready to make this change.

If you do not notice your local store’s hours change, keep in mind that Walmart will continue to assess the safety concerns in each area and schedule hours to best fit each location’s needs.

Don’t forget, these major retailers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2020!

I don’t love Walmart but it’s one of the few stores we have around. I am happy they will stay open later (fingers crossed ours will). I prefer to do the shopping without the kids but it’s easier for me to go after they all go to bed since I have 3 little ones so my husband doesn’t have to do it all on his own. We live 30 minutes away so it takes several hours to shop.

This is a huge relief. It’s definitely been difficult without other shopping options near us.

  3. SueMP

Glad to see they are going back to something closer to regular hours again. Our Meijer was back to being open until midnight over a month ago. The restricted hours has mostly kept me out of Walmart.

  4. Jessica

Good. I get having restricted hours, but ours going from being open from 24 hours to open 7-8:30pm was pretty ridiculous and inconvenient.

I think this will help, but I still think it should be open till midnight. I mean how is this helping the corona virus. I really don’t get it when this all first happened and Walmart was just letting so many people in there was a line outside and you can bet people were not standing 6 ft. apart. I bet it was spread more by the lines waiting to get into the store then by being in the the store

They closed earlier so they could clean and stock the store.

      • Yolanda

Not true at all , the overnight crew are still working no excuse and the East Capitol still doesn’t be stock 🤦🏾‍♀️

Soooo…. are they pulling people off of the Grocery Pick-up area. I had to drive to a different Walmart (30 mins. away) because the one I usually go to, didn’t have pick-up times available until Monday. Once I got there, it took 28 mins. to get my groceries. While I am appreciative that I didn’t have to go into the store, it was just frustrating. Oh, and I had 5 items that were Out of stock, with no substitutions, and I was missing an item.

    • rochellemcgee

I doubt that this would affect that. At my store, pickup is usually done by 8pm. They do have overnight shoppers for the early morning pickups, but I don’t think those people would be used for store closing at 10p if they weren’t used before.

I’m an early riser, I want go at 6:00 AM to get my items before the crazies wake up. An no not in my pajamas. I have to be at work before 7 and don’t want to fight the crowds at 5-6PM. Seriously go back to your early hours

When I worked in a store. It did not matter what time it closed. People always showed up at closing time. I think all lights should be turned off and no purchases should be allowed! Employees want to go home and many have other jobs to work!

When I was in college, I worked the jewelry counter at JCPenney. I wasn’t allowed to start pulling and inventorying the diamonds that had to go in the safe overnight until the store was completely clear of customers. Ugh! Talk about pressure when every other department was more or less shut down by close of business and I’m still waiting for some clueless customer to wander on out… The manager on duty would be tapping their toe because they wanted to lock up and go home and I was working as fast as possible to not miscount or misplace high value jewelry, as you can imagine missing or lost diamonds being a really big deal…

    • C

@evie this doesn’t matter at Walmart as employees are still there 24 hours (anyways here at night they usually just have 4 self checkouts open monitored by 1 employee- who could definitely be the overnight manager starting at 8, or with extended hours at 9:45) … here they stop letting ppl in 15 minutes before closing… I used to shop late at night to avoid crowds and screaming kids… unfortunately that’s not the case anymore due to such restrictive hours … and stores care about the sales more than employees 🤷🏼‍♀️ In high school when I worked retail we weren’t allowed to say anything to ppl coming in late (like 5 minutes before close) or staying in the store after hours… honestly they would basically just shut down all the registers except one and have the doors locked

does anyone know if they are accepting returns yet? I think they are the only store that is not.

    • AnnA

They are. I was finally able to do my return last week that I had since March. Not sure why Walmart took so long to start accepting returns.

    • peretz12

My local Walmart has been accepting returns for a long time already. I don’t recall them even stopping that, but maybe I just didn’t happen to need to return anything the month or 2 ours stopped that.

We went to Walmart this morning. There was an associate at the entrance. I walk straight through the door and I honestly didn’t hear her said “Shopping?” (I did not know they ask everyone who comes in and also she was wearing mask) but I saw her look at me and followed me to say it again. That’s when I heard her, but she was sharply looking at me while asking me. When did they start asking customers if they’re gonna shop or not?

    • Evie

Maybe because lots are looting and tearing up certain departments.
Where I live a group came in at 11p on aSunday, and stole $90,000 dollars worth of jewelry! That must be retail value as most jewelry is played.
Poor thieves must have been disappointed in their “loot!”
The jewelry department has not been fixed after months.
I heard insurance is not paying the Bill’s of the looters.

    • anom

So what you suppose to say no “looting”! lol. that is a strange question. i wouldn’t have really understood or listened either.

  11. Linda

My Walmart stock shelves during business hours. Which I think is a joke most of the employees just stand around the big carts of merchandise that needs to be put away talking and blocking the isles. If they are supposed to be doing that at night then why is it out blocking all the isles when you are trying to shop?

    • C

Our shelves are not stocked as well as when they were 24 hours- and it’s not lack of stock (I suspect the stockers are even more lazy than usual- I like late night shopping and even then many of them were sitting around clucking rather than stocking, but at least they were stocking somewhat)… thus the stocking isn’t getting done over night and the day workers are having to stock but are just as bad as the night workers 🙄

Wal-Mart at Battlefield, closed before 9pm.
Was in long line 8:30 pm, got to register at 9pm, it shut down!
    Fyi!😐

  13. C

I suspect this move is bc they are hemorrhaging money… more ppl are going to other stores that remain open later like target or Walgreens… maybe they finally realized once ppl get in the habit of going to other stores they will continue to do so and Walmart will keep hemorrhaging
