Premier Nutrition Expands Recall of Protein Shakes Due to Possible Microbial Contamination
If you’re a fan of Premier Protein ready-to-drink shakes, you may need to take another look at any of these products you have in your possession!
Last month, Premier Nutrition Company voluntarily recalled select 11-oz. ready-to-drink shakes in vanilla, chocolate, and café latte flavors. The concern was that select batches of these products could potentially be contaminated with an organism called Cronobacter sakazakii.
Now, the company is expanding its voluntary recall to include older lot codes, with the additional concern that a second microbial contamination from the organism Clostridium botulinum may be present. At this time, this bacteria has not been found in any of the recalled products.
On products affected by the recall, the lot code on the top of the carton will contain four numbers, followed by the letters “BT.” Head here to see the complete list of recalled protein shakes, which were all produced at one of Premier Nutrition’s processing partner facilities in Beloit, Wisconsin.
It’s important to note that so far, no illnesses have been reported and infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare. Symptoms to look for could include fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infection with children under a year old being the most vulnerable. Fortunately, this recall does not include products that are intended for infants.
Clostridium botulinum may cause a severe form of food poisoning that can begin anywhere from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and respiratory paralysis.
If you notice any of these symptoms and are concerned about your health, you’re urged to contact a doctor immediately.
If you are in possession of an affected Premier Protein product, it’s been advised to either discard the drinks or you can return the product for a refund wherever they were purchased from. If you have any questions, concerns, or requests for refunds, feel free to call 1-888-497-7646 from 9 AM – 5:30 PM ET.
Note that a few other products sold by the Lyons Magnus company are also being recalled, including Glucerna cartons. See the full list of Lyons Magnus recalled products here.
