Netflix Ending DVD Subscription Program After 25 Years
Remember when Netflix used to send out DVDs in the mail?
Actually, they still do! But those days will soon be coming to an end.
The company announced in a recent Tweet that it will be sending out its last red envelope on September 29th, 2023. The end of Netflix DVD will come after 25 years and over 5 billion envelopes sent.
While some folks are reacting with surprise that this service still exists, others are mourning the end of an era. Getting DVDs in the mail without having to leave home changed movie night forever, and this concept paved the way for the streaming services that are now a part of daily life.
Those who still use the Netflix DVD service cite its wide variety of available titles and the ability to binge-watch entire series without interruption. The Netflix DVD catalog actually has more options than Netflix’s streaming service so it’s been a great place to score hard-to-find movies, TV shows, special features, and lost episodes.
Are you a current or recent Netflix DVD subscriber? Read this!
If you want to document your years of movie-watching memories thanks to Netflix DVD, Netflix is actually offering a downloadable PDF copy of your data at any time up until Oct 27, 2023. If you are a current DVD subscriber or former DVD customer whose DVD subscription was canceled within the past 9 months, you can download your data via the Data Download. Netflix also has a FAQ page to answer any questions you may have.
How do you feel about the end of this Netflix DVD era?
I’m sad about this. We still use the dvd service because it has more options, especially with newly released movies. My husband and I use the discs for movie date nights.
What a fun idea for date nights, Tricia! 🤗 I know that it’s not quite the same experience since they’re not delivered, but I do occasionally grab a DVD from Redbox – and they have a point system where you can earn free nights too. Hoping that might be helpful and you enjoy the next few months of your DVD delivery with Netflix! ❤️
Your mileage and selection may vary, but check your local library. A lot of libraries these days have new and popular movies and TV series on DVD. And if you have internet access some even have emovies or hot spots to use for wireless.
Great suggestion, Libby! I use to do this when my kids were little and they always loved picking out movies to bring home, but I had totally forgot about this option! Thank you for mentioning it! 🤗 💕
