Warning: T-mobile is forcing older users onto new plans. Here’s what you need to know!

T-Mobile is forcing some users to change their phone plans. 📱

The popular phone carrier, T-Mobile, just confirmed some unfortunate news to CNET. Starting in November, users on older unlimited plans will be forced onto one of T-mobile’s newer and enhanced phone plans.

This will result in a monthly price increase for those customers.

Come October 17, notices will be sent to customers on the One, Simple Choice, Magenta, and Magenta 55 Plus plans to alert them of the change. If you’re currently locked into one of these plans, be on the lookout for the communication.

According to rumors on Reddit, the plans will switch as follows:

  • Magenta -> Go5G
  • One -> Go5G
  • Magenta 55+ -> Go5G 55+
  • Simple Choice / Select Choice -> Magenta or Essentials Select
  • Simple Choice Business -> Business Unlimited Advanced

How much is the price increase and can you stay on the older plan? 💰

T-Mobile told CNET that the price increase is roughly $10 per line. Luckily, if you are going to be impacted by this change, you have options.

If you wish to stay on the older plan for now, you can, but you must personally call T-Mobile’s Customer Care Line to place the request. Whether or not you will be able to keep your older plan permanently, is currently unknown.

Should you choose to move to the newer plan at this time, you can save $5 per line by setting up automatic payments using your bank account information. However, CNET warns users that T-Mobile has faced security breaches in the past so choose which information you provide them carefully.

Why is T-Mobile choosing to do this now?

In 2020, T-Mobile merged with Sprint and part of their agreement was that rates wouldn’t increase for at least 3 years. It seems the three years are up and T-Mobile is pushing ahead with pressuring customers to move to new plans.

Some customers on these older plans, especially those on fixed incomes, are sure to be disappointed that T-Mobile decided to administer the switch so fast after the agreement expired. 😩

However, it’s worth noting that T-Mobile does now have a “Price Lock” for plans activated after April 28, 2022. 🔒 Do you intend to switch to a newer plan? If so, ask within 60 days if your rate is now covered by this new policy.

As a Sprint customer who was forced into T-Mobile when Sprint got bought out, they have already been doing this without permission. I’d call about something and then they would urge me to change my plan, and I clearly stated, “I do NOT want to change plans. DO NOT change my plan, I am very happy with my current plan.” and then come to find out they changed it anyway. I call back and inform them I never approved any kind of change, and then they say they change it back, only for them to do it again and again. Extremely dishonest practices. Now at least they are up front about it with this announcement.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the T-Mobile/Sprint merge, Del. That does sound super frustrating. 💞 I’ve had a similar experience as well with the changes. Hoping they might get all the details ironed out in favor of their customers. 🤞

    • Kristi

I also am a Sprint business customer. I’ve been on the same plan over 20 years. I was told before the buyout buy a business rep do not change your plan you will never get a plan as good and cheap as the one you have…😥 the positive is that I’ve been out of contract for years so I’m free to find another carrier…I hate to do this since I’ve been with Sprint so long…

We have also been a sprint business customer for over 20 years

Jessica!!! Hi! Hope your day is going well 🙂 I’m currently on the phone with T-Mobile the representative has no idea about this I’m on hold she is looking into it 🙂

        • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Monique!! 🤗 It’s going great, thank you! Hoping your day has been the same! ❤️ It looks like notices will begin on October 17th, so hoping customer service may know more then, if they aren’t familiar with them at the moment. 🤞

          • Monique

Yep seems like they haven’t gotten on the same page in regards to this one associate told my mom something completely different than what I was told so yeah will wait till the 17th and go from there thanks for keeping us before the curve

I was with T-Mobile and switched to Google Fi. I’ve had nothing but great service with them and convinced my brother to switch. After taxes, it’s around $92 a month. This is for 4 lines with 5g unlimited talk, text, 30 g of data, and 5g hotspots per line each month.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for taking a moment to share about the company you switched to, Kara. Great to hear how pleased you are with the features and pricing of Google Fi. 💓

  4. Jen

I had been with T Mobile for, oh, 20 years or more and finally had to cut them loose after the merge. They got so much worse overall. The customer service went into the toilet. I used to be able to chat with them and all issues would get handled. Not anymore. Leaving them was its own nightmare. They made it very difficult, like talking to a brick wall. It was honestly sad to see them go down the toilet. Happy to be free of them now.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Such a bummer to hear about your customer service experiences as a longtime customer with them, Jen. Hoping you’ve found a wireless carrier that you are loving now! 💕

  5. Robyn

Thank goodness I just left T-Mobile I would of been paying well over 600 dollars a month

  6. Kristen

Thank you for letting me know!! I supposedly “opted out” but time will tell!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re welcome, Kristen! 💗

It’s a shame loyalty gets you nothing. We’ve been with them for over 15 years and currently have 5 lines. We’ve been holding off on upgrading 2 of our phones, because we have been considering switching carriers because they don’t have any good deals for existing customers. The only way to buy one get one is to add a line. I already have 5, why would I need another. Looks like they may be making the decision for us to switch to another carrier!

  8. Fred Pitcher

I was a Sprint customer for 13 years. I also got forced to T-Mobile. Everything they said to me about keeping my same plan, that was a joke. They didn’t keep their word.
I had a plan for $55 a month. T-Mobile told me they couldn’t give me that plan because I wasn’t 55 or older. Sprint didn’t have a 55 and older plan, they just had a plan for 55. I tried showing them that and they still raised me to $80 a month. Service sucks and I got lied to from the start. Still being lied to.
Can’t wait to my plan is up so I can switch carriers.

  9. Erika

Been with them for over 20 years and have not been happy with them for a long time. I’ve just been too lazy to look for a new carrier. 2 lines, only 1 unlimited is $102 a month. Service is spotty everywhere I go. Good thing I can’t get their Internet at my house or I might have been stuck with them for another year.

  10. James

When I signed up with t mobile they said my rates would never increase. So if they raise my rates they are in breach of contract and I can assume the con5act is voided or I can sue them for breach of contract.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hi James! There’s some details about the rate increase and a “price lock” on plans mentioned at the bottom of the post, if that might be helpful! ❤️

  11. Pat Goff

It is such a shame. T-Mobile was such a great company when I had them. I took a plan they said was in my area but I had major problems. From my house to my work there was no service and half the town I lived in didn’t have service (duh!) so I sent them back the phone and told them thank you but until they really have service in my area I wasn’t interested. Within 2 months they sent me back every dime of my money. I was really impressed with their service. I have T-Mobile as my internet and am very happy with it.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for taking a few minutes to share about your experience with them, Pat. Great to hear they were helpful and refunded your money. ❤️ I also have their Home Internet plan and have been very pleased with it since Day 1. 🤗

  12. Lora Lincoln

I called they explained the new plan. I told them wanted to stay on my original plan. They said they would keep on the original. Time will tell.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Very glad to hear you were able to discuss keeping your original plan with a representative, Lora. 🤗 Thanks so much for the update.
