Community Event: Hope Floats in Memphis – Flood Victim Benefit Donation Drive & Raffle
Date & Time: July 7th – 11AM to 2PM
Event Location: YoLo Frozen Yogurt, 1243 Ridgeway, Memphis TN 38119 (@ Park & Ridgeway)
Program: Please check out the Facebook event page here for more information and updates. A picnic table will be set up inside the store. Donations for the sponsored families (See below.) will be collected, and a giveaway drawing will be held – with all event donors entered into the contest. Tentative activities for the kids: balloons and/or face-painting. Entertainer Wacky Chad will be on hand! Tentative plan – “Thank you” packets (with coupons, special discounts from local businesses, product samples) for the first 150 people or so to donate; for giveaway, prizes needed!

The Carruth Family
The Carruths lost their home of nine years and nearly everything inside it this past Spring when flood waters crested above windows of their mobile home in Frayser, Tennessee. Nearly everything (including personal belongings, clothing, and baby items) was destroyed, and resulting toxic black mold was left behind. Needs for the Carruths – including Ms. Carruth’s 18-month grandson:

The Jackson Family
Mrs. Jackson is a 69-year-old recently widowed woman who lost her mobile home due to the recent flooding in Tunica, Mississippi. She was able to salvage her clothes, mattresses, washer, and refrigerator, but everything else was destroyed. Needs for Mrs. Jackson:

The Houston Family
In the spring of 2010, Mrs. Houston’s den which sits lower than the rest of the home, was flooded with several inches of water due to an overflowing Mississippi River. She was not so lucky this year as the river left her entire home under several feet of water. She is able to still live in her home but is currently working on replacing sheet rock, floors, and more. At 81 years of age, Mrs. Houston is in good health, but she is having a difficult time coping with the fact that “everything is ruined.” Needs for Mrs. Houston:

The Hunt Family
This couple lived in Memphis in a mobile home park until the severe flooding this Spring. The trailer park was wiped out, and the Hunt’s home was totally destroyed – with the water level reaching up to nine feet in their trailer. The Hunts lost all their household and personal belongings and were evacuated at the end of April. They’re temporarily living in Arkansas and waiting for FEMA to help. Mrs. Hunt lost her job due to flooding, and Mr. Hunt, who suffers from emphysema, makes the lengthy & expensive commute to Memphis in order to keep his job. Needs for the Hunt Family:

Local Donation Drop-Off
Drop-Off Locations: YoLo Frozen Yogurt, 1243 Ridgeway, Memphis TN 38119 (@ Park & Ridgeway) or The Little Gym, 6645 Poplar Ave., #103, Germantown TN 38138. Smaller items and canned foods can be left at one of these locations in the designated drop box. For larger items, please email Kim or phone her at 901-355-4243 to arrange delivery. For gift cards, please mail them to Kim at her home address: 5412 Peyton Randolph St., Bartlett TN 38134. They will be stored in a secure location. If you want your donation to go to a specific family, please specify the family’s name on your package. Thank you! If your donated items are not immediately needed by the sponsored families, they will be distributed to the families on July 7th when the Hip2Help Tour is in Memphis.
