Love Lush brand bath bombs as much as I do?
They’re such a fun and luxurious product for your bath (delightful fragrance and fizz? Yes, please!). Whether you’re making these for yourself or hosting a girl’s night in, these DIY Lush inspired bath bombs will save you money instead of having to dish out $8 each at Lush. 🙌

DIY Lush Inspired Bath Bombs
Supplies Needed:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup corn starch
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 2 and 1/2 Tablespoons coconut oil, melted plus 1 Tablespoon Water
- 8-10 drops essential oils (I used Plant Therapy Peppermint Essential Oil)
- red, yellow, & blue soap dyes
- bath bomb molds (These metal 2.5 inch molds are my favorite and work great!)
- Optional yet Helpful: Small spray bottle with witch hazel or alcohol (to prevent fizzing)
Directions:
1.) Mix baking soda, corn starch, citric acid, Epsom salt, and cream of tartar.
Note: Cream of tartar is optional, but it’s a hardener I’ve been adding to bath bombs lately.
2.) Mix water and oils together. Slowly incorporate into the dry mixture 1/2 teaspoon at a time and stir well.
3.) The consistency should feel like damp sand. If it’s still too dry, try spraying a little alcohol or witch hazel on it. This helps avoid fizzing.
4.) Separate mixture into three bowls, and mix a few drops of desired coloring into each bowl.
5.) Layer each side of the bath bomb mold with the three separate colors for a fun tie dye effect. Make sure to overfill slightly.
6.) Close the bath bomb sides together, press down, and wait for a couple minutes to set.
7.) Lightly tap on the molds and remove. Let dry overnight.
Enjoy at bath time!
Hip Tip: Save your sanity and use molds like these! I tried some clear plastic ones from Hobby Lobby that were a complete fail for me. I wouldn’t want you to waste your time and money like I did!
This recipe produced five beautiful bath bombs!
They turned out so pretty and smell amazing, I can’t wait to enjoy them with a relaxing bath! Pamper yourself and make extras as thoughtful gifts!
Want more? Try these lavender bath bombs.
I love bath bombs! Here is another recipe I use often, but switch up the essential oils to fit my needs. https://www.planttherapy.com/blog/2016/11/05/plant-therapys-favorite-things-giveaway-2/ Thanks for this great post!
Would you interested in making bath bombs for me. I’m disabled and can’t 😢. If you can please let me know Thank you.
I would be happy to make you both bombs I make them all the time with my granddaughter and always have a ton!!
With everyone having the sniffles- we made “Vick’s” Bombs- with eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender! They are a blessing!
I know I’m out of it on this whole trend so this is probably a dumb question but do you feel like this stuff sits on your skin when you’re done. Or, makes your bath forth? I’m envisioning a corn starch coating. No?
Not specifically Lush – Just bath bombs in general, Gross. Gross. Gross. I had to take a shower after using one and scrub the yuck off. Gross on my skin. Gross on my hair. Gross on my tub.
My teen says it’s because I’m old. Lol!
Janie, haha. I guess I am old too! That’s kind of what in was thinking. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. They look super cute but not for me.
Janie – not all bath bombs make you feel like that. Have you tried different brands? I’m just wondering if the ones you’ve tried had too much oil or possibly butter added.
It’s because most homemade bath bombs don’t use an emulsifier, you need polysorbate 80 so it doesn’t sit on the surface and cling to you and the tub. (it also has nothing to do with using young living essential oils like someone underneath said lol!! Any essential oils with a good GC/MS test is fine, don’t overpay for MLM oils)
I felt the same way until I made my own with quality essential oils-made all the difference! I use Young Living and am very impressed!
Thanks… I love Lush but definitely a splurge and on the pricey side. These are super adorbs and would make lovely gifts.
My daughter loves these. Can’t wait to make some homemade ones with her.
I would not use coconut oil since it’s a solid at room temperature! My daughter had the LOL bath bomb maker. It just uses baking soda, powder coloring, and citric acid.
I was thinking the smae thing about the coconut oil.
Do. You mean you can make it without oil?
I guess you can omit the oil but I would think they would be very drying to the skin. I have been making these with my daughters at Christmas time and have had no complaints yet. I love customizing the scents and colours to suit our preferences.
Thanks, this will be so fun to make with my niece.
These are cute!
I learned after several Batches the Problem not the Coconut Oil , Its the Essential Oils from Wal Mart. I had been leaving half the Coconut Oil out , But I forgot to on a Batch . They were the Best Bombs ever Made the different e was the Oil. You can good Essential Oils on Amazon Cheaper than the Wal Mart ones. Also the Coloring. Food Coloring Will attach to the Oil going to Your skin an Tub. Also on Amazon you will Find the Soap Coloring. I love Lush ,But they are Exspensive. If you use Better Ingredients you can make a Bath Bomb that very close if not exactly like Lush.
What store do I get the silver molds from? I went to Walmart but I didn’t see them.
https://amzn.to/2r5LECG amazon – I haven’t seen them in store anywhere yet.
Great web site. Plenty of useful information here. I’m sending it to several buddies ans additionally sharing in delicious. And of course, thank you to your sweat!
I made these last night. The first two small ones came out fine from the molds, but all the rest stuck inside. Any ideas where I went wrong?
I spray ny mold with a list of olive oil spray before loading them. The bombs pop out nicely when I do that.
I’m confused is there an actual page for love lush with other recipes?
So I have a big blue stain on the tub in our rental apt. Where my son left a bath bomb from lush overnight that was wet. Any suggestions how to remove this stain? The tub seems kind of plastic, I’ve tried bleach…
Oh no!! That happened to me in a rental with bath time crayons!! There is nothing you can do if the bath tub is plastic.. I did everything too! Ajax or peroxide mode work as a mixture let sit
Hello
Can Fractionated Coconut Oil be used in this recipe?
I’ve made these several times now and love them! Thank you for a great recipe.
Oh I’m so glad Veronica! Thanks for sharing ❤️
Where did you purchase your soap dyes?
That has been my biggest problem when trying to make bath bombs …I never have found anything with such pretty colors as yours ! Especially the deep blues and pinks !
Please share where you purchased & thank you!
Ours crumbled apart any suggestions of what I should add? More coconut oil?
Ya maybe a little more oil and pack it super tightly.
I followed this recipe exactly. My trouble is when I take the molds apart the bombs separate and I can’t get out of the molds. Tips?
I use cbd and hemp seed oil in mine…love the colors of these
