We have looked into so many steamers as my daughter is in theatre and often needs these before a performance. I’m wondering the same thing.
We have had one for several years. I haven’t seen the Amazon reviews, but ours works great and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another if needed. Make sure you use tap water to fill it and let it dry open before you store it. If you see any white mineral buildup inside, just fill it with a bit of white vinegar and water, let it soak, then scrub with a toothbrush. This is the only thing that gets us through cold/flu season.
