Cute DIY Mini Sourdough Starter Ornament – Perfect for Gifting!

I am so excited to share this easy and cute mini mason jar ornament that looks like a tiny sourdough starter! It’s such a perfect frugal DIY craft to make for yourself or to give out to your fellow sourdough-loving friends and family. I can’t get over how adorable this turned out using mini 4oz mason jars and white kitchen sponges!

I made my own, which is a few months old now, and I also bought some from a woman in my neighborhood who is 20 years old. Hip2Save’s owner Collin and her sister Bryn are also now super into sourdough baking! We are having fun chatting about sourdough, and we all use Emile Raffa’s same everyday sourdough recipe.
I also just started reading her book Artisan Sourdough Made Simple and LOVE it!
DIY Sourdough Starter Jar Ornament
PrintSupplies Needed
- mini 4 oz. mason jar
- white sponge or scrubby
- rubberband
- small piece of cloth or fabric
- ribbon or twine
- label using label maker
Directions

Trace a piece of white sponge with the jar and cut it out for the “starter”. Place it inside the jar. You can also cut a piece of white kitchen scrubber as shown.

Place the rubber band around the jar. Cut a piece of cloth or fabric into a circle larger than the jar lid, about 3-4 inches.

Poke a couple of holes in the lid and secure a piece of twine for hanging on the tree.

Close the lid with the fabric underneath it. Attach a label is desired that says sourdough starter,
Extra tips for making this sourdough starter ornament:
- I experimented by using both white kitchen sponges and white mesh dish scrubbers. I liked how both turned out!
- The label is optional. You can handwrite one or use a Bluetooth label maker like I did! I love having this around for quick labels on the fly.
What a cute and easy little ornament idea! I could not be happier. This was my first holiday craft project this year, and I can’t wait to give these away. My mom is now into making sourdough, too, so one will be for her.
This ornament inspired a whole baking-related Christmas tree in my kitchen! The vintage mixing bowl I scored at Goodwill a few years ago is the perfect base. This tree makes me so happy!
