Make This Easy DIY Wooden Advent Calendar Using Treat Bags
Surprise your family with this DIY wooden Advent calendar! It’s a fun and easy holiday activity!
Here’s an easy homemade Advent calendar idea with hanging goody bags!
Try making this simple and inexpensive DIY Wooden Advent calendar by hanging little treat sacks with small clothespins! Each day during December, your family can look forward to opening a different gift bag. Fill the sacks with small toys, party favors, stickers, treats, written messages, or even acts of kindness.
Advent calendars are such a fun tradition, and this DIY project turned out so cute!
This DIY requires such simple craft supplies!
You’ll need a few inexpensive craft supplies for this project. My small clothespins and paper treat bags are from Michaels and come in a variety of patterns and colors.
I found the numbered Recollections brand gift tags in-store at Michaels. If you can’t find them, blank gift tags will work too. Simply write each number out instead. I was able to purchase what I needed for around $15!
Consider these mini bags on Amazon that already come with numbers!
Here’s how I made my DIY wooden Advent Calendar in a frugal way…
I used a piece of scrap wood (a piece of beadboard that I already had in the garage). I painted it with a fresh coat of white paint for this project, then I glued the clothespins to the board. If you like this beadboard look, pick up a piece and have it cut to size at the hardware store, or even use a different wood – it’s up to you!
The top and bottom pieces of trim are thin pieces of poplar hobby board from the hardware store that I stained and glued to my board using Liquid Nails. I think it gives a more finished look, but this step is definitely optional.
Then, I just hung each bag and numbered the tag to the board. The best part is that I can re-use this DIY wooden Advent calendar next year! I plan on leaning this against the wall in my kitchen next to my Christmas Tree or on my mantel, but you can add a picture hanger to the back and hang it up, too.

PrintSupplies Needed
Directions
1
Prep wood board with paint and stain trim pieces as desired. Glue trim to top and bottom using Liquid Nails. Let dry.
2
Measure out 4 rows of 6 treat bags and attach clothespins using hot glue. I used a T Square tool as a guide to make sure I was placing clothespins evenly and straight, but a ruler would work too!
3
Fill each bag with desired goodies for the first 24 days of December. The contents don’t have to be expensive. In fact, consider checking out Dollar Tree for fun and inexpensive items, or re-purpose Halloween candy if you have leftovers.
4
Fold each bag, align the numbered tag with the top of the fold, and hang the bags with clothespins. You’re ready to start opening on December 1st!
This DIY wooden Advent calendar with goody bags makes me so excited for Christmas! 🎄
I love how this Advent calendar turned out, and I look forward to using it!
Amazon (and I’m sure other retailers) has little canvas bags with cute Christmas designs that count down to Christmas. You can reuse them every year. My daughter is outgrowing the child advent calendars, so this year I got the bags and I’m putting chapsticks, nail polish, gift cards, gag gifts (like coal) etc. in them. It should be fun. 🙂
LOVE this idea! I’ve also started a DIY Advent tradition this year. I’m using decorated boxes with Zuru 5 surprise mini-brands in the inside. I’ve never seen my daughter so excited for an Advent calendar before. We used to buy the Lego friends ones but they weren’t as great because my daughter kinda knew what to expect in each one. LOVe these Advent ideas!
We bought all the supplies on Amazon. I used buttons with numbers 1-25 with Merry Christmas on them and with other holiday designs. They’re awesome because I can reuse them every year. The boxes I can reuse too.
