What kind of documentation can a home schooling parent have? We will be doing homeschooling this year and any help we can get will be greatly appreciate 😊
Hi Jackie, l’m be starting my 13th year of homeschooling this year. I belong to the HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Assoc.) and I show them my card for discounts, but perhaps there is another local group that you have nearby that has a discount group number that you can use!
I live in Alaska and there are homeschool programs through the public schools here. If you are enrolled in the program then you get a teacher identification card. If your state has something similar you could probably get a card through them. With some of these businesses you may not even need the ID. With somewhere like a craft store you may just be able to talk to the cashier or manager nicely and they might honor the discount. That being said I have had the experience of a cashier being very rude at a Lowe’s once when trying to get the military veteran’s discount. I had left my mil ID at home in the reader but had an expired one in my wallet that I had previously lost and then found again. I showed her that and she was really not nice and acted like I was a criminal. She refused to give me the discount. I talked to the manager though and he put it through.
Our school district gives us a letter of all of the documentation we turn in (affidavit and goals) but I think every state might be different in their requirements. There are also websites homeschoolers can get IDs from that have worked for chipotle teacher appreciation days.
I made an ID and submitted my former order from the scholastic teacher store and it worked.
I just contacted liberty mutual and they said they do not offer discounts for homeschool teachers. Anyone else have success please let me know and I will try again with another representative.
Darn! Thanks for the feedback. I do see the teacher discount listed through the link above.
Hi Chan, I had Liberty in the past, and they did honor my HSLDA (see comment above) group number for a discount. I cannot remember how much, because we no longer have them.
Samsung gives 10% off for teachers and students
Thanks for sharing! We’ll get that added!
when i click on the apple link, the prices are shown in malaysian ringgit values instead of US dollars. Is this legit, bc that seems weird.
Thanks or commenting! That link has been updated!
Has anyone used Basecamp for homeschooling? I was wondering if it’s anything like Google Classroom. I still have 2 homeschooling and looking for better ways to organize their schedule.
Zappos.com also offers a 10% discount for teachers and students.
Thanks for the heads up! We’ll be sure to check it out!
We are choosing to do Virtual Learning through school this year. Are we eligible for any of these discounts?
Homeschooling parents are considered teachers at some of these places, because they chose the curriculum, make the lesson plans, grade the work, etc., just like a regular teacher. In most virtual learning set ups, your child will have a teacher (not the parent) who does all the lesson plans, gives tests, etc.
Homeschool and virtual learning are not the same thing. Like the other comment said, homeschool is when a student is withdrawn from the school system and the parent is required to do all of the planning, prepping, and decision making. With virtual, certified educators do all of that- just in an online format.
Just called T-Mobile and they do NOT offer any discounts for educators 😭😭
Target is having a teacher discount right now too. 20% off one purchase online or in-store.
Thanks for the reminder! We have the Target teacher discount posted here.
