Here’s how to make frozen pizza better at home!

With hungry kids and a busy work and life schedule, I too turn to them sometimes for convenience. In fact, my freezer is usually stocked with our favorites so my teens can make them on the fly throughout the week! There are so many ways that you can jazz up a frozen pizza so that it comes out tasting a little elevated and delicious.

Here are 5 simple and delicious ideas to transform a basic grocery store frozen pizza into something to look forward to! These could easily change the way you feel about this convenient freezer staple.

1.) Adding more cheese and toppings is key.adding feta cheese to pizza

Frozen pizzas seem to skimp on cheese and toppings most of the time. Adding additional cheese will give it more of a homemade taste. We usually add more shredded mozzarella cheese for melting and feta cheese for the salty flavor. Feel free to add ones that your family has on hand.

adding black olives and more pepperoni to pizza

Adding more toppings is also a great way to brighten up a boring pie. We love black olives and additional pepperoni. Feel free to add chopped veggies such as onions and peppers and more meats like shredded chicken or sliced salami.

2.) Butter and season the crust for added flavor.

Frozen pizza crust can have a cardboard texture and taste sometimes. Amp it up by brushing it with melted butter or olive oil and then seasoning it. I added melted butter followed by a little garlic powder and grated parmesan cheese. The result is perfect!

3.) Turn up the heat in your oven!

baking a pizza on the rack

Try baking your pizza at a higher temperature than the box suggests for a shorter amount of time. I usually do 450 degrees and be sure the oven is fully preheated before adding the pizza. This may require a little more babysitting on your end to make sure it doesn’t burn, but the results are better!

Also, try cooking right on the middle rack or on a pizza stone for a crispier texture with zero sogginess. You can even cook your frozen pizza in your outdoor pizza oven! We have used our Ooni Pizza oven for frozen pizzas before and the results are yummy.

4.) Add fresh herbs or greens after baking.

A sprinkle of chopped herbs can add a burst of fresh flavor to frozen pizza! We love the addition of fresh basil to our pizzas. I also love adding tender pieces of lettuce such as baby arugula after baking.

5.) Add condiments or sauces to finish!

Sauce it up with a drizzle of pesto, truffle oil, or your favorite condiment. We personally love the sweet and spicy flavor of chili-infused honey. Mike’s Hot Honey is a staple in our house! My kids love it and you really just need a light drizzle for lots of added flavor.

This post is so timely! 🙂 Great ideas! I recently started buying the Red Baron brick oven pizzas just to have in a pinch on weekends. I use a pampered chef pizza stone or the GoodCook AirPerfect 15.75″ Insulated Nonstick Carbon Steel Pizza Pan with Holes, I bought during Amazon Prime day. I felt like my stone leaves them a little soggy in the middle, this new pan doesn’t. 🙂

Glad this post popped up at the perfect time for you, Raquel! Hoping Lina’s suggestions take your frozen pizzas to the next level on your new pan! 🍕🙌 I also like having a stash of some frozen ones handy for a quick meal! 🥰

  2. Brandy

Our family Really likes the “Stranger Things – Surfer Boy” branded pizzas. I thought they would be mediocre because of the gimmick but they are stand alone one of the better frozen pizzas we have ever tried. The crust is phenomenal and the sauce is stellar.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing what your favorite frozen pizza has been, Brandy! 🍕 Glad to hear how yummy the crust and sauce are! I’ll have to see if I can hunt one down near me to try out!

I bought the rocker style cutter and we were not impressed with it. I gave it away. Thanks for suggesting it.

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

You’re welcome, Pat! Sorry to hear you were not a fan of this style pizza cutter! 🤗💕

For those that don’t have a pizza stone – a cookie sheet works great too. Leave it in the oven while it preheats for best results. Red Baron Brick Oven is the best!!

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing the tip on leaving the cookie sheet in the oven while it preheats, Susan! 🙌 Happy to know you’ve been a fan of Red Barron Brick Oven pizzas too! ❤️

Motor City pizza is the best! It is kind of hard to find but luckily our WalMart carries it. It is a staple in our house now. Would like to try Screaming Sicilian and Red Barron Brick Oven to compare. Thank you for this post!

Victoria Taylor’s pizza seasoning added to any pizza elevates it to whole other level. You can purchase it on Amazon or from their website.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh awesome! Thanks for sharing that suggestion.

Put the pizza on a cooling rack, or on top of your gas burner grate (do not turn the gas on!), for a couple of minutes after you take it out of the oven. This lets the crust actually crisp up a bit more, because you’re not letting steam get trapped under the crust, as it does when you put it right on the counter.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for that tip, Jodi P! I love a crispy pizza! 💕

I have the Betty Crocker countertop pizza maker and I find that it makes all frozen pizzas taste better. The only complaints that I have is that I like to make a homemade pizza and one pack of pizza crust makes it thicker than I like. We also love the Motor City pizzas and I have to push down on the edges until it’s defrosted enough to fit down in the pizza maker. Not ideal but I make it work and those turn out pretty good as well. I’d love to have a bit larger pizza maker.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing how you’ve been enjoying using your pizza maker! I’ll have to look into getting one of those! ❤️😋🍕
