mally eyeshadow stick pointed at eyelids

I love beauty products, but I’ve never really fallen in love with eyeshadow. But a few weeks ago, my mom gave me a Mally Beauty Shadow Stick (after receiving it in a beauty box) so I figured, why not give it a try.

It’s not that I don’t like eye shadow. I just thought it was time-consuming, made me look like I was trying way too hard, and honestly, I’m just not the best at applying it.

Frankly, I’m a little disappointed in myself that it took me so long to try an eyeshadow stick.

First of all, I think the color is gorgeous. 😍 The shade I have is Autumn Shimmer and it’s a deep, taupe pale pink color with quite a bit of sheen. To me, it’s the perfect neutral shade for an all over eyelid color.

face makeup applied before adding eyeshadow

Before applying any eyeshadow, I start by doing my entire face with makeup minus my mascara (I will curl my lashes so that I don’t risk taking off any of the eyeshadow with the curler after it’s applied).

comparison of all over eyeshadow vs smoky effect

Then there are two ways I will apply the shadow stick based on my mood or the occasion. I either apply it to my entire eyelid as a solid shade, or I apply it from the middle of my lid to the outer edges and leave some space near the inner corners for a lighter shade.

While the full color is application is a breeze, and it’s great for everyday wear, I like to go the latter route for a smoky eye effect when I’m going out for a nice event.

applying mally eyeshadow stick to eyelid

To get the smoky look, I apply the creamy eyeshadow stick along the crease of the eye, the outer edge, partly beneath the lower lid near the outer edge, and fill in the middle, leaving some space near the inner eye. I’m telling you, you’ll fall in love with this way of applying shadow because it glides on so easily, and you have much more control over the placement.

applying powder eyeshadow on top of cream shadow base

Then, I take a darker shade and tap it with a brush on top of the outer edges, beneath the eye, and in the crease. I find the creamy eyeshadow from Mally creates a solid base to help the powder shade stay longer.

Hip Tip: The shadow palette I use is from Target for under $13! Check out more of my beauty bag supplies.

applying highlighter shadow to inner corners of eyes

Next, I use a lighter powder to highlight the inner part of the eye and a bit of the lower lid. This results in a simple ombre effect going from light in the inner corner to the neutral taupe pink shade in the middle to darker brown in the crease and outer edges.

finished eyeshadow application

Coming from someone who’s never really been great at applying eyeshadow, this process becomes a breeze by the second time you try it! And if you wanted, you could ditch the powder eyeshadow and just rock a solid base of the Mally eyeshadow shimmer stick.

I’m thinking I may forgo the powder shadow altogether and pick up some lighter and darker shades of the eyeshadow sticks so that my entire application only uses Mally’s glide-on formula.

If you’re anything like me and want a simple way to perfecting your eyeshadow game, you’ve got to try out Mally’s eyeshadow sticks! Pick one up right now at Kohl’s while it’s on sale for only $10, originally $25!

Oh, and this post isn’t sponsored, I’m just in love with this eyeshadow stick. Though if anyone knows someone at Mally, tell them I love free makeup products! 😆

Hi I agree the Mally stick is the best eye shadow I have ever tried. I normally don’t even use eye shad but would make exception for the Mally stick. Unfortunately in my box I got burnished bronze color and it’s a little dark on me but wow this product is very high quality

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

It sounds like we’re so much the same, Toni! If you’re not loving the color, maybe try using a lighter powder shadow over it if you have one on hand. You’ll get that super creamy base from Mally to define where you want the shadow to go along with the staying power, but then the powder will provide the color you want!

  2. Denise

I love this post. You did such a great job of showing us the two different shadows too! I’ve heard many great things about these shadow sticks, but to be honest, they were always too expensive. Thank you for letting me know they’re on sale at Kohls! I’ll stop by on the way home!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Yes! I think you’ll love it, Denise. And totally agree, $10 is a great price for it on sale!

  3. Stacie Frost

What box are you getting these in?

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

My mom received hers in an Allure Beauty Box, though there could be other companies sending them out.

My favorite eyeshadow sticks are the Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeshadow Sticks (esp. in Amethyst which is universally flattering)…easy to blend yet once they set, they stay put all day without creasing! I also <3 the Charlotte Tilbury Color Chameleon sticks and Nudestix Magnetic Eye Color (my favorite shade is Chocolate, which is the perfect warm brown that anyone can wear).

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Wow! Thank you for all the additional suggestions! These eyeshadow sticks are quickly becoming my new favorite product in my beauty bag.

    • Marie

I agree on the Laura Mercier! They give a smoother finish to the eyelid without accenting the fine lines like you see with the Mally ones.

  5. Jo28p

I liked mine from my beauty box as well!

  6. viv

Which color palette is it from Target?

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Viv! The Sleek palette I have is called “When The Sun Goes Down”. I love the shimmer and the shades included. I have the trial size so mine is smaller, but the full size on Target’s website is a great deal!

  7. Erin

What color Mally stick is this??

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Erin! The Mally Shadow Stick shade is Autumn Shimmer.

  8. Tina

I love the KIKO ones, the are absolute dupes for the Laura Mercier ones and they are $9! Often go on sale for $4.50 though.

  9. Denise

Where do you buy the Kiko sticks? I’ve heard great things about those too!!

  10. kimmy831

Hey Ladies….Mally’s Color sticks are amazing! I get mine at QVC….times. Most of the time, the prices are awesome, but once in a while they will have the most crazy pricing and you can get multiples for so much less than anywhere I’ve ever seen. It will actually give Mally heart palpatations when she sees the crazy prices they do at times! I have a whole selection of them and they stay on, even in water!

    • Lori

      Which colors are your favorite?

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! So glad you agree! I’ve actually worn the eyeshadow to workout and it didn’t budge one bit — such an impressive product.

  11. Stacey

Thanks, I may give this a try. I have very hooded eyes and eyeshadow doesn’t stay long for me. Plus, I’m going on vacation and was thinking I needed to get a couple little eyeshadows instead of taking my big pallet so this is perfect to travel with.

    • Christina

I also have a hooded eyes and I love these shadow sticks! Malley will state that you don’t need a primer with these, but I, personally do still need a primer to make it last. $10 is a steal! Buy them all

      • Stacey

        Thanks Christina for the tip!

    • Kathryn

I have hooded eyes too. Urban decay primer is a lifesaver!

  12. Cherryluva

You are right, this color is SO beautiful! Thanks for sharing that and all your tips. P.s. you seem like a pro at this now!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

🤗I’ve been recreating that smoky look for a few different weddings and events I’ve gone to, it’s quickly becoming second nature. Thank you for the super kind words!

  13. Marissa

What color is good for fair skin with hazel eyes? Anyone good at figuring that out??

  14. Darcie

Just left Coles with one of these sticks. Thanks, I’m so excited to try them

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Awesome! Glad you picked one up, let me know what you think!

  15. LS

I have Mally lipsticks. Love ‘em! Very pigmented and last a long time on your lips.

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Ooo I’ll have to look for those! If the quality of their lipsticks is the same as these shadow sticks, I’m sold.

  16. Amy

I personally love the eyeshadow sticks for Elf. I have the rose gold and the mocha and both are awesome and only $3

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Wow, that’s a great price! I’ll keep my eye out for those. Thanks for the recommendation!

  17. Diane

I love this post! I’d love to see more of these kinds of posts for lip color, etc. Thanks for sharing!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks, Diane! Gladly!

  18. Jennifer

The Sephora brand shadow sticks are also great

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

That’s great to know! I actually have a gift card for Sephora so maybe I’ll give their version a try.

  19. Liz

This shadow stick is my favorite!!! Thanks for this awesome deal!!! I didn’t even know Kohls sells Mally. Thank you thank you!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Of course! It’s a great deal to stock up on some different colors.

  20. barb

I got that eye shimmer stick in my freebie beauty tote from QVC or HSN – I did both of them back when you posted them in April, not sure which one it came in, but I haven’t used mine yet. WOW, you look beautiful – I’m going to pull mine out of the drawer an give it a try! Thanks for posting, H2S always posts the best deals and well – the best everything!!!!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

Aw, thank you so much, Barb! That is so sweet! Glad this post was a bit of inspiration for you to try the shadow stick out. I think you’re going to love it!

  21. Erin

YESSS! My mom & I have been Mallynistas for a long long time! (That’s what she refers to her fans as LOL) Have yet to try her eye shadow sticks but they have been on my QVC wish list for a long time. Might be time to pick one up 🙂

  22. Stacey

QVC has 4 stick set for $38 right now.

  23. Michelle Hartline

I received the same on in my beauty box and I love it as well!!
