Do You Have Missing Money?!

This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 at 12:52 pm.

Have you ever heard of MissingMoney.com? Until recently, I did not know that this web-site even existed. MissingMoney.com is a national database that was established in 1999 by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) and enables people like you and me to perform comprehensive searches for lost assets required by law to be turned over to the states and provinces. What does this mean in plain English…you can search for money owed to you!

The most common types of unclaimed property include:
* Bank accounts and safe deposit box contents
* Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and dividends
* Uncashed checks and wages
* Insurance policies, CD’s, trust funds
* Utility deposits, escrow accounts

To search for your own missing money, here are the steps that you need to follow:

*Click here, enter your name, and click on “go.” You can do an individual, family or business search (you can even search for a deceased family member).

*If you find a match, you must complete a claim form. Most states and provinces require a specific form to be completed which asks pertinent information about the property and proof of ownership, such as copies of checkbook, passbook, bonds, etc.

*Follow the instructions to complete the specified form and supply any necessary documentation and identification.

*The claim form and ID are then mailed to the state for review. The state will respond to you directly after they have reviewed your submission and verified that you are the rightful owner.

*Most states send you an acknowledgment letter after receiving your claim. Claims processing time frames vary between states and provinces and property to property based upon claim activity.

Please note that there are currently only 44 states whose records are contained in the MissingMoney database: click here to view the list of participating states (Illinois and Rhode Island will be added soon).

Thanks to one of my readers for making me aware of this site. She found 5 claims for her husband and friends of money owed including overpayment of taxes, an airline that owed for a missing bag, and an overpaid utility bill from the 1990′s! Please let us know in the comment section below if you find money owed to you or your family.

    • Lolo says:

yeah I just found that out too…. they probably have spent it all already anyway LOL

    • Lolo says:

LOL I take that back. I went there and typed in my name etc…. and nothing came back so I decided to just put in my last name and see if any family members were listed and my mom’s name came up woo hoo she has $6.15 LOL so then I continue through and there is my name also! Now why did it tell me there were no results? Mine is a rebate check I had misplaced and found way after it was able to be cashed so I chalked it up to a loss! Nice to see I will be getting my $5 after all… LOL just a little late. I have a cousin who may be on there as well. Geez my family needs to pay attention LOL.

  • Jody says:

This is great – found someone in the family who actually had missing money. I’m sure they’ll be a happy camper. Thanks so much!

  • Kammie G. says:

I found money for both my husband and I. When I finally got my check for the item I found for myself, there was another claim form in with it for ANOTHER small amount that the state of KY found in my name. Just be patient! It took several months before I heard anything!! But free money is free money!

  • Julie says:

I found money owed to my dads mom(who is passed away) and my dads brother. That is the only name I have searched for so far. I have looked at this website YEARS ago and remember I found my Grandma but don’t remember telling my dad about it. Will have to do that! :)

  • kim says:

I found some for my bro in law. I can’t wait to tell him! Thanks

  • Anonymous says:

For CA if you click on the states anyways they have another link to a website you can search through the Bureau

  • Kerri says:

I found some for my husband and my father in law. Thank you!

  • stephanie says:

is this legit or is it a scam? I am leery to put in personal information (i.e: SSN) on the computer.

    • Kerri says:

You do not have to put in a SS#, just a name.

      • Lolo says:

to claim it you have to type a SSN but in answer to Stephanie, you can print out the form without entering your SSN and then enter it manually as you have to print it out and sign it anyway and then mail it in. If this web site does not allow you to do that(which it should) go to the link under anonymous at 1:16 and she or he has a link that you can go and click on your state and do it that way.

  • Judy says:

Dateline NBC had a good program on, years ago, about Missing Money. The webpage about it is still up — http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25643467/?pg=3#dtl_unclaimedfunds. (If this link doesn’t show up, go to NBC or MSNBC (on the web) and search for “You Might Be Rich” (in quotes).

The article has a list of ALL states — even CA :) — and you can check states individually. OR, there is (link) MissingMoney .com –you can check many states at one time. OR go to Unclaimed .ORG (not .com) and check there.

I found money for friends and family (cash, insurance & stocks)…. unfortuantely, not for me. But I was SO HAPPY I could help others find what was rightfully thiers.

Enter your own names, spouses, friends, family, classmates, work associates …. it’s really interesting – and fun! Use Formal names, nicknames, initials….

    Hope you are RICH!!!!! ;)

  • Elizabeth says:

Nothing in mine or my husband’s name, but I found some owed to my husband’s uncle. I’m sure he’ll be thrilled when we tell him!

  • Amy says:

I found money owed to my hubby!! Yeah! Hopefully we will see it.

  • thorninc says:

found some for my husband but site says i can’t claim it because the address is not current. :( bummer.

    • Kerri says:

      Contact them personally.

    • thorninc says:

okay never mind…. i opened the file and he is only due $1.13. i think we’ll live. lol!

      • Kerri says:

        Lol

      • Jenn B. says:

Do you have to fill out that form first after hitting “Yes I can claim” before you can see the amount? I found one for my uncle, but I don’ t know how much it is. If it is only $1, it isn’t worth it. Just asking if there is a way to check the amount before I send off.

        • Judy says:

A lot of states won’t list funds on these sites unless the amounts are more than $5. A lot of states will not expose the amounts until the claim is verified and awarded. (That is, if money/property is owed you, you might not know how much until the check comes.)

        • thorninc says:

yeah, i hit “yes, i can claim” to open it.

      • Kerri says:

On the bright side, that 1.13 will get you the Raising Arizona DVD at K-mart with the doubled coupon. LOL

        • Judy says:

I think it’s a good idea to help the states clean up the lists & find the owners of the monies. Go for it? (You will have to pay postage, most likely, for docs they may require. Hopefully, you will, at least, break even.)

$1.13 can stretch real far with us couponers!! hahaha!

        • thorninc says:

we don’t have Kmart in the Houston area. :(

  • nona says:

NC isnt on the list :(

  • Rebekah says:

    THANK YOU COLLIN!
I didn’t have anything owed to myself, but found $200 dish owes my husband and $1200!!! that my moms work owes her in payroll! RIDICULOUS! I’ve been searching people i know nonstop now haha OH and for California if you go through to where you click on the states and it lists all the states there is a link to look at a diff website from the Bureau for Ca

  • Pamela says:

How do you know it’s your name……there are so many others with the same name.

  • Dawn says:

To my surprise there is money owed to me $54.50. Pretty cool. Had no idea!

  • Stephanie says:

I used this site last fall, and found a paycheck that I forgot about when I moved out of state. It actually took 2 weeks to receive my check (I dealt directly with the state). I received my check the day before my trip to Vegas. Extra gambling money! LOL

  • Judy says:

Stephanie — All states MUST keep most property & funds, that belong to individuals, indefinately. [There are a few exceptions.] These sites are up to help people find funds — and it is non-profit to the states/sites. You owe NOTHING to find this money, you have to pay NOTHING. The states want you to find it. If someone finds money for you — and tells you about it — you do NOT owe them anything, unless you hired them to find it (with a pre-search agreement).

No, NOT A SCAM through the sites listed above.
    :)

  • MoKeaton says:

I found some money for my hubby about 9 months ago. It is legit. The money is funded into a special account that is owned by the state. The funds sit there and build interest, allowing the state hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest to use on state funded programs. The State Treasurer has 90 days to accept or deny your claim after filling out the missing money afidavit. They have 30 days from the day they accept your claim, to mail you a check. The will not disclose the actual amount, most states have a system of over/under a certain dollar amount. I was skeptical, but it is legit. We got our check in the mail about 3 months after filing our affidavit.

  • Jess says:

I found money for my sister in law- says its over $100. She was super excited when i called her. Maybe my name will appear some day :)

  • Judy says:

P.S. Search for both living and deceased persons. [If you find $$ for persons deceased, notify the executors of estates.]

    …. OK, I think I’m done now. ~~giggles~~

  • melissa says:

I found 2 for me and 2 for hubby!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH COLLIN!!!!

  • KIM says:

I search several times a year for my employer, because we deal with many insurance companies. So check out past and present companies you may have owned. I always find $$ for friends and family…..

  • Dana says:

YAY!!! I have $27.63 coming from a former employer!!! Woo Hoo That’s a weeks worth of groceries for my family of 4! :) THANKS H2S

  • Barbara says:

Nope nothing here. I’m pretty diligent about remembering what I have where and what I am owed.

  • Judy says:

OK, not done. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ENTER SOCIAL SECURITY #s at these sites — just names. You have the options of entering town/city names, if you want to limit or narrow your searches.

Some names (like “John Smith”) will pull up hundreds of listings in a state. You need to find a way to limit/narrow the search — entering towns (where those people lived or do/did business) is helpful. If those people are alive, you need to ask them if the funds could be theirs.

In the case of a good friend, it took about 6 months, I think, to actually get the check (fuinds) that were owed her. The states required specific documentation/evidence that the funds/property is yours and will investigate and let you know the results. (So, don’t make fraudulent claims. They will check you out thoroughly.) ;)

  • Amanda C. says:

I have found money for quite a few people in the past. I found thousands for my mom’s coworkers mother. No clue how you lose track of that much money, but she did and they got the checks in the mail. I found some for my dad, my uncle, my father in law and myself and my husband. My husband and I got a check for $160 from NY State IRS. It was a nice little surprise! :)

  • Tracy H says:

Thank you…..I just found 2 in my dad’s and 1 in my mom’s name. They can really use it as they both lost their jobs with 1 month of each other and are currently going thru cancer treatment that the insurance is not covering much of. This will at least brighten up mom’s day. (Oh the paperwork I face!!! LOL)

  • Barbara says:

Well, I know a few people who could use some $. Went back and put in many relatives’ and friends’ names whose former addresses I would be familiar with. Nothing.

Given that any name I pull up pulls up a few hundred entries at most, it is not that common to have money held this way.
