Did you know that October 23rd will mark the largest national day of community service called Make a Difference Day?! Held annually on the fourth Saturday in October, Make A Difference Day is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. In 2009, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.

Who takes part in Make A Difference Day?

Anyone– Young and old, individuals and groups… can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative.

How do I get started?

Look around your community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? No matter where you live, there’s a need nearby. And on Make A Difference Day, millions of Americans are expected to roll up their sleeves to help others. You can act alone or enlist your friends, family and co-workers. Thousands of people across the community can band together. Click here to view project ideas and click here for tips on planning your project. (Consider simply donating personal care and/or food items from your stockpile to a local shelter.)

What do I do after I’ve selected a project?

Tell others what you’re doing and enlist help. Several weeks before the day (which would mean now :) ), register your plans in the Make A Difference DaytaBank, a national listing of local projects that will be viewed by interested volunteers, other people looking for good project ideas and news media looking for good stories to tell. It will only take a few minutes to register your plans in the DaytaBank. And here’s one of the perks of registering an event/volunteer project: after successfully registering your event, you will be able to register for a coupon good for one FREE Newman’s Own product that will be sent to you in the mail in about 2 weeks!

Who do I contact for more information?

For more information about Make a Difference Day, you can send an email to diffday@usaweekend(dot)com and/or call the Make A Difference Day Hot Line at 1-800-416-3824.

Did you participate in Make a Difference Day last year? If so, share your experience with us.

(Thanks to Savvy Spending for making me aware of this awesome event!)
