I have the Singer 9910 (older version) and I am very pleased with my machine. I’m not paid by Singer, but I think $249.99 is a great deal for this machine.
I’m curious to know how many of you machine sew? Is sewing at home a dying art?
It is usually cheaper for me to buy my clothes than to make my own. I usually sew things that are hard to find or overpriced (in my opinion). I had a hard time finding a zippered sleeve to fit my laptop, so I made my own.
I wish I knew how to sew. I want to learn to sew for basic alteration. I’m very short and I always have to have my pants altered. Wish it was easy to alter pants. I am very good at hand sewing, but the stitches don’t last long in the washing machine as compared to machine done.
There are a lot of good instructional sewing videos on YouTube. You can search on “how to hem pants”
I took a sewing class through our community college’s community education series. It was $25 and we learned the basics, walked away with a pair of PJ pants. They have follow-up classes too but I’ve been too busy.
I grew up with mother and grandmother who sewed everything, and I like to as well. I agree that it’s not really cost effective to make my own clothes unless it’s something special, but I like to make all of my curtains and other home decor items. I also dabble in purses and other accessories. I wish I knew other women my age who were into it. Do you like your Singer, Caroline? I’ve always been leery since the name was sold, and I noticed their lower end models seemed to suffer in quality. I have an Elna that I absolutely adore, but my mom swears by her Singer from the 60s.
Ashley, yes I am very happy with my Singer, but this is my first computerized sewing machine, so I can’t say how it compares to an Elna. Same with you, I don’t know any other women in my age group who are into sewing. I have been watching sewing videos to learn how to make specific items. For example, last week I watched Martha Stewart’s video on how to make a Yoga bag. I was able to get beautiful remnant fabric for $2.50 and made a yoga bag that would have cost me at least $25.
I bought a cheapo sewing machine (almost like a toy)- a $15 thing at CVS. I was thinking that if it was something I could learn to operate, I could buy a real sewing machine. I failed. Wish it was easier to operate these babies.
I have found that the more expensive the sewing machine, the easier it is to operate. I had a much cheaper sewing machine that took me 5 – 10 minutes just to thread. I can thread my Singer 9910 in under 1 minute because it has the auto threader feature.
thanks, caroline.
I bought the singer tiny tailor for $40 at walmart. It does two types of stitches and I made a square block quilt as my first project. It was a good machine to learn on. They don’t make it anymore but this is what it looked like: https://compare.ebay.com/like/310652623140?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
thanks, emily. i’ll look into this.
Anyone use this machine to sew minkie and can you get a 1/4 inch foot for it?
Yes with patterns around $7.00 and thread at $3.00 plus per spool it makes one hesitate to sew ones own clothing. But then the assortment of beautiful fabrics is awesome. I use my machine to make pillows and valances and stuff like that which do not need patterns. Also for alterations. This machine looks like a wonderful buy though.
I agree. I don’t buy patterns (anymore), and I have to wait for a sale on thread before I buy. The cost of fabric has really gone up in my area in the past 5 years. I used to buy fabric at $1/yard and now the same fabric is at least $6/yard. I have to buy fabric from the remnant rack.
if you have a joanns or hobby lobby near you. watch for the patten sales. I buy my patterns when they go on sale for buy a $1 or $2. each store is always running one of these sales. make is great to buy childrens patterns in different size
I am 33 and I sew & quilt. I’ve made home dec items, infinity scarves, shirts, etc. I have a Brother. My machine also embroiders so I make a lot of gifts with it. There are always ways to get deals on thread, fabric, patterns, etc.

My local sewing machine repair shop said that Singer machines are now made in China and replacement parts are not available so they are not a good choice. The old machines are great but still the same problem–no parts available as they are no longer made in the USA.
About 2 months ago, I broke the automatic needled threader on my Singer 9910 and I purchased the replacement part from a local Singer shop for $15. I live in Georgia. They had the part I needed in stock.
I am 31, and love to sew and create. My husband got me a Brother machine that sews and embroiders. I bought fabric from a local swap meet, and made 25 super hero capes for less than $2 a piece. With Pinterest, there are so many fun ideas and tutorials. I think sewing may make a come back for the younger generation!
Just tried to buy it and the price has gone up quite a bit now.
You are right, Amazon has sold out of Singer 9960 sewing machines. I guess sewing isn’t a lost art after all.
I love to sew! Price, come on ladies use coupons, get fabric at thrift stores, it’s fun to create!
I am 30 and took up sewing as a way to alter thrift clothes; hence, i have not bought fabric by the yard.
