What is the difference between echo & echo dot?
Echo the full size with Alexa and speaker. Echo Tap a bit smaller than Echo, but need to hit the microphone button every time to talk to Alexa. Echo Dot the top third of Echo it’s just Alexa, but need external speakers for full functionality.
That is not true @pandoraaddict The dot has speakers and is just as functional as the regular echo but the sound isn’t as full. You wont want to listen to music on this (unless you connect Bluetooth speakers) but it does everything that echo does without the full sound range. If you need or want more info you can look on amazon and see comparisons and descriptions.
Dot yes has a speaker, but if you want the full range of sound for more than hearing Alexa you do need more speakers – hence the full functionality bit.
That is incorrect @pandoraaddict. I have the echo dot and it works exactly the same way as my original Amazon echo. The features are exactly the same and I do not have additional speakers hooked up to it. I play music the same and Amazon Alexa is exactly the same no need for external speakers. You can add them if you want but you do not need to.
Pandoraaddict – great answer! I’ve been looking for a deal on the Tap which is the middle version. It has the built in speakers, but you have to “tap” to get it to work. I saw the Tap for $79.99 (I think) a few weeks ago and I’m kicking myself for not buying it then. It’s now $129.99. H2S please keep your eyes out for this deal! I have an Echo and love it. I want the Tap for my baby nursery!
Kim, I think you might have them mixed up. You have to have Echo to make Dot work, not Tap. And you have to have Echo to make Tap work. Tap is not really the “middle” but actually the portable version. For clarity for everyone, Echo is the main tower and is required for Tap or Dot to work. Dot is the smaller (secondary) version that can be placed in another part of your home (say bedroom while Echo would be in the living room). Dot can perform all the same functions and feature that Echo can. Both respond to their trigger name (ie Alexa) and can answer questions, perform functions like ordering items from Amazon, adding items to shopping lists, scheduling events, setting alarms, play music, etc. Dot, however, doesn’t have as strong of a speaker for music, but IMO is still good enough for enjoying music. The third design is Tap. Tap is designed to be portable and wireless and has a charging base. Tap can be carried with a person around and outside of their home, and works with your Echo (and just like your Echo) as long as you are within your home’s wireless internet range. So you can enjoy it, say…. on your back porch. Tap can also travel away from the home and be used just as a battery powered Bluetooth speaker (Alexa feature doesn’t work away from home). Tap does not have a trigger response like Echo and Dot; rather, you have to press a button to make Tap listen to your commands. Tap’s speaker is fairly good, but again, not quite as good as Echo.
All three are wonderful and somewhat unique in their uses and feature. We have owned all 3 designed since they hit the market and they are integrated with our home automation (smart home) features (another great thing they can do). Our 5 year old even loves them just for music and “impromptu dance parties!” I have loved owning them and would recommend them to anyone who really enjoys technology and/or music!! *Note: to really utilize the music, you will either want to have Amazon prime, use Pandora (etc), or have a strong purchased library from Amazon music. Hope this helps. ๐
You do not need one device in order to make the other devices work. All three devices work independently of each other. As long as you have internet connectivity and an amazon account then you are good. My first purchase was an echo. I travel alot, so i would connect it to wifi hotspots to listen to news and music. When the dot came out, i started taking that with me doing the same. Sound quality is not all yhat grat. The tap is the more portable version with good sound quality and no wires. The devices do not talk to each other, but heard this may be a feature later on.
The echo dot can be used as a stand alone device, you don’t need the echo to make it work. This is true of the second generation that is about to be launched. This is really smart for Amazon to do, bringing the point of entry for a smart speaker down to $50 these should sell like hotcakes.
Aah, thanks Mike!! I didn’t realize they had changed it to where users aren’t required to have Echo to utilize Dot. Initially, it was a requirement when first released. Glad to see they have changed that! Definitely makes it more affordable for consumers!! Suppose competition like Google putting similar items on the market has helped drive down price and open more options a little!! Might be purchasing a Dot for a family member gift!! ๐
According to the specs for the Dot…
“Built-in speaker for voice feedback when not connected to external speakers. 3.5 mm stereo audio output for use with external speakers (audio cable not included).”
We have two Echos, one for each floor of two story house. We are always going .. Alexa, add … to the shopping list :). We have ordered the new Dot as well.
The built in speakers are to hear Alexa feedback only.
FYI – I just tried to place the order and while it reflected the $20 off at check out, it was not reflected in the actual order confirmation. I contacted HSN customer service and they said it was an error and they cancelled the promo. I then cancelled my order.
I just placed an order and received the discount with Visa Pay. The discount code loaded automatically
Would anyone know if I could use this as an alarm to go off multiple times a day? Or would I have to program it each day?
Use your phone. You already have that. No need to extra money just for an alarm
I unfortunately have a sick dog who needs medicine multiple times a day that he can’t miss.๐ Sometimes other people stay with him so one of the reasons I want to try this is as an alarm to remind everyone to give him his pills.
You can schedule repeating alarms in the Alexa app.
Thank you!
Not that great a deal. The Echo Dot sells for $49.99 at Amazon with free shipping, so you’re saving a few bucks here but not much.
The discount on 10/16 is only $10 with Visa Checkout. The regular price is now $109.95 not $99.95. So yes you can save $10 but you have to wait an extra week more than Amazon for delivery (10/28 vs 10/20)
Sorry this is wrong. The price is $109.
