Great video, you always make me smile! Thanks for the all those tips!!!

  2. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have four thrift stores that I LOVE. I am really going to miss them when we leave here this summer. I can always find quicksilver, gymboree, Justice and Billabong at two of them. Have found longaberger and Pampered chef items as well. It can be hit and miss. It is also my favorite place to buy formals for my girls. They were them for an organization they are in.
Thanks for showing others that it is ok to shop in the thrift stores……
    (Love Ross too).

  3. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Love shopping the clearance racks at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, etc… Thanks for the great video.

    • JodiSue1

Good! I’m glad you liked it! I usually watch those when I’m in a crabby mood and it makes me laugh every time!

  5. I Heart Coupon Deals

There is NO WAY my thrift stores would be that cheap. They pretty much charge full price for thrift store items out here in So Cal. Kids Old Navy shirts are more then what they would charge in the actual store. It’s crazy! Great video though!

  6. Carrie

Totally cracking me up with the jeans for your hubby and the spare bag routine. That’s new to me, but my husband is the same exact way about wearing clearance so I just don’t tell him and it’s usually a 50/50 when he accepts and likes it so that isn’t bad odds.

  7. Kati

Just yesterday I scored a Columbia winter coat for 30 bucks at JC Penney. I also got some cute thermo long sleeve tops for 2 bucks and solid vneck tees for 1.50. Clearance rocks! All cold weather clothing was 70 percent off 🙂

  8. Mom of 3

This was great Collin! So funny too! I shop at St. Vincent’s and score some great deals there. Plus the money goes back to those in need in my local area.

I also wanted to mention that in Target’s dollar section they have some small coupon organizers, for those who didn’t want to carry a binder. They have 2 kinds, one with 7 dividers, the other with 13. Cute colors too…and yes, $1.00! I just picked some up last night.

    • MamaBear

thats what i use! i got the small pink one it does great and fits well in my purse… and who can beat a dollar! 😀

  9. Coupon Pro

Your soooo good at math 😉

    • Kel

and “your” so good at grammar. 😉

  10. Aleisha

Dude, I see you found my skirt! LOL! I kid, I kid! The idea of putting your husbands pants in another bag I was laughing so hard cause I have been tempted, on occasion to do the same thing! Also, TJ Max here (Oregon) is owned by Marshall’s for all that don’t know it! I scored awesome Christmas “Santa” gifts for my daughter there!!

  11. Danielle Hull

Oh, I can’t wait to see the video – we’re having a problem with our speakers – but I definitely NEED to see it!

Our local Kroger has coupons on the back of receipts and we have $1/$10 purchase and $5/$25! I didn’t have any coupons with me once, and I embarrassed my friend that was with me by asking the other customers. I went in to buy forks, but I found an 8 quart Calphalon stockpot for $10 I was NOT missing out on!

    Thanks and blessings!

    • Danielle Hull

OH, sorry about my lack of communication! Those coupons are for Goodwill!

  12. Heather

I try to stay away from thrift stores as ours are way over priced, but I hit the clearance racks every time I shop at Target and JCPenney. Anything under $2 is fair game. Got all my four kids clothes last year for school on clearance. Spent $55 for $1000 worth of clothes at JCPenney. I love great deals! 🙂

  13. Janessa

Ok, you are absolutely adorable! Thanks for your fun site! I have enjoyed your freebies and am thinking about subscribing to the Sunday paper so I can get all of the good deals that you post about. Thanks for helping us to save!!!

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Love the video! You are hilarious! I must say I also Love the creepy 80’s coat! hahahaa

  15. Tiffany

Hi Collin, thanks for your blog. I have gotten several great deals in the two months I have been reading it. I would love to see how you make time to figure out all these great deal, do the coupon thing and shop at all these stores and still be a mom. Ever since I have been seriously couponing (about 2 months now) I feel like I live at the store and my spare time is spent clipping, filing coupons or searching for deals. Thanks. so much.

  16. Angela

Just want to say how much I enjoy your follow me monday episodes! LOVEIT!! Keep up the good work 🙂

  17. Dianne

Great video. Especially loved the deal on the skirt. Did you get the stain out? The absolute best deals on “previously owned” stuff is church sales. Go early to get best selection & go late to get best deals. I’ve been to a few at closing when everything you could stuff in a grocery bag (paper) was $1. My dream is to find something that ends up on Antiques Roadshow! Keep up the good work, Collin!

  18. Kelly

Can you really use coupons at Ross?!?! What about TJ Maxx? That would be awesome. I know Big Lots doesn’t take them . . . .

  19. Nancy

Okay, now it is officially Monday. So glad Monday videos are back!

  20. jen

oh so funny, i needed that after a day i have had.. thanks for the advice on missing buttons and such

  21. Theresa

Collin – It’s so nice to have you back. I love shopping at the Thrift Store. I love Garage Sales and I love Craigs List!!! I have gotten just about everything for my 6 month old from these places and he’s closet floweth over let me tell you. He is always dressed very nicely. My thing is why waste your money for things that will only last a short time. I’m able to put more money aside for his future now because of how much I’m saving by not buying new or full retail. I think that is the most responsible thing I can do for him. BTW my 8 year old is more excited to see what I find him at the Thrift Store than the things I buy at the store. I’m so thankful that my childeren are not brand snobs.
I can’t wait to see your next “Follow Me Monday” episode.

  22. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Collin – Thank you so much for encouraging readers to shop at secondhand stores. In addition to saving money, they are doing something positive for the environment!

I always go to Goodwill first whenever I need new clothes! You never know what you will find! I agree with other commenters though – it does smell! (at least mine does).

My Goodwill “rules” are as follows:
    – Don’t buy dry clean only clothes (unless they still have the tag on) – it’s gross, but most of them were not cleaned before they were donated 🙁
    – Wash all clothes purchased immediately with bleach or bleach for colors
    – Bring hand sanitizer for in-store and post shopping (preferably scented! LOL) <- I try to do this in general, but always make a special point of remembering it for Goodwill!
    – Thoroughly inspect clothes and decide if you are satisfied with the condition. Make sure zippers function, the hems are not frayed, no holes, no stains, etc. Sometimes these are easy fixes, other times it's not worth the trouble.

I usually only buy jeans at Goodwill, and I have only a short mental list of which brands I would be interested in. It takes a long time sorting through all of the racks, but if you can skip over items that don't fall into your "preferred brands", it is less overwhelming 🙂

    ***************
PS – if you shop at Goodwill/Salvation Army/etc, please consider donating your unwanted items to them in the future to help your community!!! 🙂

    Hey,

I love this follow me monday. I noticed tonight when I went to Kohls they had alot of shoes on clearance. Usually when I go it looks like just a few of each so it got me thinking. I saw on a blog somewhere the list of what days target puts different items on clearance. Does each retail store like ross, marshalls, kohls have certain days they put out their clearance. I am thinking Monday because I have never seen that many clearance items in each department. Maybe someone knows or we can start a list. If I know it is Monday then I will save time and go when the clearance items are put out. BTW I cant find the site that has the days for target clearance, do you know.

  24. Shawanda @ You Have More Than You Think

I really have to start thinking outside the box with coupons. For some reason, I only pictured Yankee Candles at stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, Hallmark, and the Yankee Candle store. They’re still pretty expensive at those places even after the coupon.

Thanks for pointing out that you can find good deals on athletic apparel at Ross. It can get really expensive.

  25. ginger

I just hate that this one particular thrift store that starts with a G and ends in an L doesn’t have good prices by my house. All jeans are $6 unless individually marked. If they are brand new with tags, it’s nothing to see a $10 or $12 tag on them. Doesn’t that suck!?

  26. Rose

Here in Portland we have a million thrift stores, I have found the smaller the store the better the stuff is. The goodwill super centers are just big buildings of junk, the small ones have limited space so they are picky with what they put out.

    • AnnI

I’m also in Portland, where thrift stores are in abundance. In fact, the stores range anywhere from the Bins (my mom is a HUGE fan, but I haven’t quite come around to that degree just yet…), to the seedy smelly dives, to off the beaten path consignment shops for the really high end stuff, and we even have a “trendy” shopping area with a whole bunch of “boutique” thrift shops (my 17 yr old daughter LOVES LOVES LOVES to shop here!!) I have to agree with a previous poster, though, Value Village is my personal favorite 🙂

  27. Ronda

As most of you, I too am a big bargain shopper. I love thrift stores, garage sales, Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Bealls Outlet (love the dot clearance!) and any other store with rock bottom prices. Most couponers are also bargain shoppers in all areas of the lives – this comes as no surprise lol!!!

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Great video Collin…im eagerly waiting for the ‘follow you monday’ video with Sarah…yeah!

  29. Elizabeth

I too have bought used clothing but as soon as I get home I put it in the washing machine and I add Pine sol to remove the smell/bug/ used problem. I have never had a problem with used clothing. When we go shopping we only buy off the clearance racks or we dont get it. We LOVE Ross as thats where we find most of our deals especially the kids and baby section! Thanks for showing others that its ok to wear used clothing… as usual your video makes us laugh everytime. Thanks again Collin and Crew !

  30. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

This is another great video. This is great because I just had come home from the thrift store where I found a perfect new with tags formal dress for my 17 year old. Tag price $119 my price $22.50. I called my daughter and she came to the store and tried it on and it fit perfectly. I bought a few other things as well, of course. Keep on posting. My husband loves all the money that I save, hey I also snagged some of that great chocolate at Pier 1 today, what a great treat! THANKS!

  31. Stephanie

Collin you’re adorable!! You’ve helped me save so much money since I started reading your blog in November. My husband said, and I quote, “I can’t be mad at you because you’re not even spending any money.” 🙂 YAY!!!! 🙂 Thanks! I’m a huge TJMaxx fan, so this video was great!

  32. Stephanie

Oh and I must say that I’m DYING to see your stash of stuff that you’ve stockpiled!!!! 🙂

  33. Fernanda

Hi Collin…I love your videos…but it drives me nuts that you are always positioning yourself like you’re hiding. Seriously! Posture my friend!!!!! How can you walk after making your videos?? You’re back must be broken! lol…I don’t mean to be rude… please.. I love you!!!! But… stand straight PLEASE!!!!! It’s hard to look!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Seriously…why on earth make a comment like that. Don’t you know…”if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all!” If you don’t like how she “stands” or her “posture” then I say “don’t watch the videos”!!!

  34. Stephanie

Fernanda maybe you should work on NOT criticizing people when they’re trying to help US.

  35. Emma

Great ideas for saving money on clothing. I have five kids and have found that if you can shop the sales at fabric stores you can make your kids some pretty inexpensive clothes that have a great fit. My kids love the clothes I make for them because they fit around the waist. Just another thought.

  36. Jan

In Southwest GA and North FL mondays are half price on clothing at all Goodwills! (This doesn’t happen in PA at least not in Lancaster.) Also if you live near/in a large city or capital they will often have several within a few miles of each other – like Tallahassee has at least four! Goodwill = Clorox and Lysol 🙂 works for me!!
You should include JCPenny outlet – where all the returns go – great prices there, for things that are still in store – love that place!

  37. DD

when we were living in ca, they were about to open up a new ross store right next the constant busy walmart, and i didn’t know that they weren’t open just yet, and i tried to go in there, my husband laughed at me, and he was like what’s the big the deal about Ross. well that happened quite a while ago, and now we are living in va, there’s a ross at the mall, and i was like ohhhh, there’s a ross, and so we go inside and my hubby starts looking through the men’s section and he’s all like look, this is only $$$ bucks, and i’m like i know, i told you before about ross but you were making fun of me, and guess what he says, “oh i dont’ remember” of course he didn’t but i did remind him of it. but he likes ross now, and we still have to check out the tj maxx that’s a little further down the street. i love these stores.
now that’s being thrifty putting his clothes in department store bags, but that’s hilarious that he still likes them.

  38. Christine

I really enjoyed this video. I have always been a big clearance shopper even before I started couponing. I have a great thrift store by my house with tons of cheap clothes and .50 items on Monday. I love the triumph of finding name brand clothes in excellent condition for next to nothing.

  39. Michelle Dobbins Cline

Another tip for those “picky hubbies” is to wash the Thrift Store clothes (in vinegar) and hang them in his closet…. don’t even mention them. If he’s like most men, he’ll think he already had them! Thanks for the video, Collin! I love Ross and didn’t even realize that they took coupons!

  40. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am a regular thrift store shopper and try to hit my three favorite at least once every two weeks.
Today I got a pair of brand new Vans tennis shoes for my daughter and was having a hard time (as usual) getting the price off (red and black crayon type marker thing) of the soles and the side of the soles. These shoes had been marked down several times, so there were alot of markings. I finally came up with spraying (Carefully) some all purpose cleaner with bleach in it on the area and then using a pencil eraser I rubbed it off. I tried a lot of other methods before I came up with this (including magic eraser).
Just thought I would pass along. I hate they way they mark some things and where they staple tags on clothing, but I love the good deals.

  41. Steph

Well, I am new to this site, as you can tell, since I am this far behind in ‘follow me’ videos. But I LOVE it! Great Job Collin, thank you so much for all your help. I do so much better learning by watching, so these videos are SO helpful to me. Thank you!!! I have already in just 7 days of getting into your site, saved a TON, And, I have gotten to try new products.

Anywho, I’m not sure if any of the other 120 comments said this, (because I haven’t read them all) BUT, I learned awhile back to shop thrift stores in the more wealthy areas…they donate way better stuff in much better shape! We found a Goodwill near the richeys, that always had great fancy name brands, for the regular goodwill price of 3 bucks each. So I walked out with practically new things; Gap jeans (they still had the tag on them, so new), Banana Republic sweater for $6…and it was a cute outfit. They also had these amazing leather boots that looked new for $7, still regret not buying them…would have been an even better deal.
Just something to add to this great shopping deal. Thank you Collin, love your work!
