Guess where this picture was taken?! Well, if you’re thinkin’ outside Walmart, you’re correct!

Reader, Julie, emailed with this awesome picture and had this to say:

“I walked into Walmart yesterday and they had a signs on their landscape stating “We’ll match any ad” and “We will honor any coupon” ! Plus, once I got inside they had a huge sign (almost as tall as me and I’m 5′7) that said the same thing. I think the letters worked!!! Hip2Saver’s unite!!”

I also received this email from reader, Christie:

“I think your Walmart emails made a difference. Yesterday I went to walmart to get some groceries and to my surprise I saw a few huge signs inside the store that said: We price match any competitor Prices and Coupons! *some restrictions apply – The signs were so big and a few placed around the store you couldn’t miss them! Plus, on the checkout lane numbers that light up when a cashier is open were signs that said: “coupon specialist” in English and Spanish!”

What do you all think?! Do you think the emails we sent are starting to make a difference?

I love my local walmart, the only store I never, ever have had any problems with coupons.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Me too…mine is always great with price matching also. I have never had any problems!

      • Sharon

what I find funny about this is, for the first time ever, I actually had issues with Walmart and coupons. They have never questioned me until yesterday! It was on the coupons from Coupons.com

  2. Karin

Wow..Just WOW!!! You guys are so great and really made a difference!! Luckily, my Walmart is pretty coupon friendly, so I’m glad if they change their attitude for the coupons & couponers on all the stores.

  3. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I wish I could tell walgreens to allow a bogo coupon with a bogo sale. Manufacturer coupons with another store logo should be taken because they’ll be reimbursed – pretty much every store tells me no. And also, why adjust coupons down? The store is going to get reimbursed the full amount from MY coupon…but yet, they don’t let me have the full amount. Why do they get to profit off my coupon?

Those are my complaints and I wish all stores would see it my way! I feel inspired by this post.

Kroger irritates me with their coupon policy, too. They only take printable coupons for 75% off of an item..and everytime I shop they try to limit my coupons..they are a mess. They don’t understand coupons and treat me like a scam artist every single time I shop.

    • Nicole

I have called Walgreens corporate recently TWICE on ONE of my Walgreens…I would love for Collin to send THEM a letter!!

      • Jenny

I had a bad experience at Walgreens today too. They make you feel like you are stealing and are not helpful at all. The manager even came over! Ughhh!

      • Iris

I would like to send a letter to the Walgreens in my area too.

        • Amy

I had a HORRIBLE walgreens experience this week too!!! The cashier was NOT comfortable dealing with coupons and kept having to call over the asst manager. He was sooooo rude. It was a terrible experience. I’m fairly new to couponing…if that would have been my first coupon experience I would have QUIT! LOL! Walgreens does need a little help, I agree!

          • stephanie

They’re just jealous! 😉 Seriously, if they are this uninformed about coupon policies it means they don’t understand. They are probably cranky from paying full price for everything.

Don’t let some crankypants put you off of saving your money and stewarding your resources!

      • Kerry

Amen to that!! It seems like I am constantly emailing/calling corporate on my local Walgreens!!

        • Renee

I had the RR not print for me today at Wags when I bought the U by Kotex deal. Cashier said it was because I used a coupon-I told her that had never happened before and insisted on the manager figuring out what happened. He rerang it without coupon and the catalina came out no problem…..I hope this is not the beginning of no RR if you use a coupon because I will not go back if it is.

          • elizabeth a.

I agree with the comments about Walgreen’s. My Walgreen’s is absolutely horrible. If you can even find the advertised merchandise on the shelf they’ll try any excuse to keep you from using all your coupons. I stood and argued with one cashier who wouldn’t accept both a store and manufacturer’s coupon for a product. She finally got a manager and yes, eventually took both coupons (though neither was too pleasant about it). Meanwhile everyone in line behind me is cursing my name. I hate going there and wouldn’t if they didn’t have such smokin’ deals sometimes.

      • Gery

Well I emailed them with some questions so they can send me an email and I can have an actual paper from them to show to the cahiers and managers and they emailed me telling me this:

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have a Corporate coupon policy. Coupon usage at this time is up to the discretion of the District Manager and Store Manager at each individual store. I apologize for any inconvenience.

So I will be calling once again!!!

  4. Evelyn

WOW!!! Now that is what I call HIP.

  5. Kati

i will get excited when they change their coupon policy online..until then i dont buy it..they have always taken most of the coupons..minus the crappy print job ones..and made the CSM approve them..

  6. Nicole

This makes me laugh.. A LOT! lol
I really hope the letter helps, but I have to laugh at the “We honor ANY coupon!”
YEAH RIGHT! The coupons I have had trouble with at Wal-Mart were not only printables, but mainly manufacturer’s coupons clipped from newspapers. Give me a break! I sure hope they straighten up but until I experience a difference in the attitudes of the cashiers/managers regarding coupons, I’m not buying it (or anything there for that matter).

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m with you. Walmart has lost my business after being humiliated and belittled, saving a little $ isn’t worth the headache!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I hosted a house party for White cloud and Walmart would not honor any of my coupons from the company. They were nice fancy coupons also. I hosted a party and could not get my items due to Walmart telling me no. To bad my coupon said “sold at Walmart’s” I looked everyplace hoping to fine this product at other stores. I tried again 2 day ago and still the same “Cashier No, CSM said No, Manager said no” when I tried to have them review their coupon policy on my iphone – they said no good we just changed our policy last week – we don’t take any free item coupons and walked away. Coupon was for a Free roll of paper towels a big $2.89 but I had 6 of them.

      • Michelle H

Actually the reason you couldn’t find White Cloud products at any other store is because it’s sold ONLY at Wal-Mart. So you have a different Wal-Mart that you could go to and see if they’ll accept the coupon?

  7. Jennifer

That is sooooo awesome! I especially love the “coupon specialist” sign! How wonderful!! I’m so thankful for this website and all of the dedicated readers!

  8. Jamie

This is wonderful . . . . now let’s get started on the rest!!!!!! Great job.

  9. Misty

Just curious if anybody received a personal response from the letter writing campaign?

    • Sarah

I was wondering the same thing. I didn’t get a response, not even a canned one. I am sure that inbox was a little overwhelmed though!

  10. Gina

I am pretty certain the letters made a difference, stores NEED feedback and those were some pretty powerful statements!

  11. Ava S.

OMG I didn’t put it together, but that’s what my experience today was about! I went in to Wal*Mart and used both an internet coupon and a free coke coupon from My Coke Rewards. They actually accepted both; a CSM told the cashier that they received an email about it and it was okay but she didn’t know how long it would last. I was actually shocked because my Wal*Mart rarely accepts coupons (especially internet coupons). Wow, looks like the emails worked and all Wal*Marts are on notice about the policy! Great job getting this started, Collin!

  12. Jill Shelton

Sorry to say it….but I almost don’t want them to become coupon friendly. I just really have always hated shopping there but felt guilty if I went to a “regular” grocery store. Now that I am couponing I never have to go there for groceries!!!!!!!

    • andrea

I wouldn’t feel guilty. I almost never shop at Walmart either. First, I usually get better deals at my grocery stores which double coupons, and second, on principle—they treat their employees badly and the suppliers they get their goods from (mostly in China) do as well.

    • Katie

I hate to go into Walmart anymore also. I started couponing in January and hardly ever go in to shop at Walmart anymore. I used to spend about $800/month on groceries and stuff there, now I spend about that at CVS, Kroger, Target, and Walgreens and get about double the amount of stuff I would get a walmart. I do go there for a few things, but very rarely.

  13. No

does this mean that they’ll honor a target & manu stack on a single item or just that you can use a target q?

  14. Nancy

Awesome!! Now since it says we accept any coupon does that include a register reward? I would love free groceries!!!

    • Aleshia

NO! They have some exclusions and those exclusions are probably store specific coupons like a coupon that says only REDEEM At Albertson’s. That’s my guess anyhow.

  15. Jeanine

Way to go!! Way to get our voices heard!

  16. Heidi S

Wahoo! This is great! Way to GO Collin and HIP ladies!

  17. Barbie

I think Wal-Mart is beginning to realize their pricing strategies are not competitive.

I have not had any coupon problems there.

    • Mrs. B

another barbie 😉 thats my name too! very rare!

  18. vlasta

has not reached my town yet! Just this Sunday the cashier said ‘well you can not use this Q. The product is $3.97 and the Q is $4. I said “since when?” We were told at the meeting, bla, bla, bla I am not going to loose my job over this. She called 4 “space cadets”, who almost got a doctorate from that poor Q. It took half an hour, and in the meantime I was being harassed by an old woman behind me, how stupid Q are, how stupid I am, huffing and puffing mean words to me and my tree young children. I kept cool and polite. It was the first time I encountered a mean old woman and she was flaming the flame on the cashier as well, who after talking to CS, came back and started scribbling on the q’s, and mumbling aloud this is not right, I’m not going to lose my job over this, she will (whose initials she was scribbling down). Then the register beeped and she handed me 1 Q back, saying it is not taking it. I told her it requires the managers key, because there is more then $40 in coupons. She say “no, it is too many Q”. I told her the same thing again, adding it is in the policy, they need to do it. Finally they called “the real manager” (their words), the other ones were training, and the manager asks what is the deal, cashier lied and said I do not agree with the total (old woman is still on my back, opening her wallet and saying here, you want $4 now, here, here, here are your $4. I told the M, cashier gave me one Q, and that the register required the authorization, that’s all, I never said anything about not wanting to pay.
It was a nightmare, my DS3 years, was so tired, being up since 0830 and going there after church and on empty stomach at his nap time, big NO, NO.
I still need to write an email up, as I am fed up with both of my WM, or hell-marts.

    • Kara

I can’t believe that! What is wrong with people?!? Way to stick to your guns……

      • Brandy

I had this issue only once – not at a walmart – I used about 40 coupons with savings equating to about 100 bucks ( my stores double ) and making my groceries 70% off. After ringing everything up – apparently, having to scan a large stack of coupons was just too much for the cashier and the woman behind me. The cashier mumbled over and over how much of a waste of time couponing is and the woman behind me – commisserating with her I guess was mumbling about how long everyone else has to wait when someone brings in a wad of coupons and she would just pay me the 30 cents or whatever it was to move the line along.

It took her about 90 seconds to scan all of the coupons (one required her to write in an amount) with no issues. After they were all scanned in, I asked her what it said at the bottom of my receipt for total and savings – she repeated it and I said – still think that was a waste of time? I turned to the woman behind me and asked her if she would like to hand me 100 bucks – maybe she should just keep her green jealousy to herself.

Some people just don’t get it. I started couponing as a ‘challenge’ to see how much I could really (sarcasm here) save. Thinking that a bunch of 20 cent coupons (thinking back to my grandma’s couponing days) was a joke. I set a goal to coupon for one year and a goal of saving 1000 bucks. I started couponing the end of March and have saved over 700 bucks. I think I’ll shatter that 1000 buck record in no time. Best of all – I haven’t changed my shopping habits (buying stuff we don’t need just for the deal or buying ‘junk’ food), 90% of what I buy with coupons are items I probably would have bought anyway and we eat a lot of organic/whole food items.

Keep up your chin and WRITE THAT EMAIL complaining. You should not be made to feel like dirt for giving them your (and the coupon manufacturer’s) money.

        • Barbie

I have to admit that I do buy items with coupons I would not have normally~much nicer items than I could have afforded before and they cost less than the least expensive alternative.

I have not really had any terrible experiences and I hope I never do!

One Wal-Mart cashier did tell me once that coupons were a waste of time. I didn’t really use coupons that time; I had my binder with me but I was purchasing a large bag of dog food that I very, very seldom find coupons for.

She went on and on about how it took too much time and the store brands were less expensive.

I like sharing my coupon results with others but I just smiled at her and said, “That’s what I used to think.”

It’s not unusual for me to save several hundred dollars in one weekend. Basically there is no such thing as a “stockpile” here because I have two teens and a six-year-old. What comes in gets used fairly quickly.

          • Lisa S.

My first “mean” person behind me happened a few weeks ago at WM. I had a decent amount of groceries and around 20 Q’s. I had my 3 children with me. (ages 7,5,3) My stuff was almost scanned when a man ( early 40’s) got in line behind me. Normally, I will tell someone that I have Q’s if I have alot, but to me, 20 is not that many. After I gave them to the clerk, he started his huffing and puffing. I just smiled. About 40 seconds in, he procedded to SIT up on the checkout belt thing and whine about it taking so long. I about died. He looked really silly! My son asked me if he could sit up there too and I explained that it is rude to do such things. About that time, a older couple got in line behind him and gave him a “look” so he smarted off about the lady with too many kids in front of him using coupons. I had been really nice to that point but argh…he made me angry. So, I REALLY nicely said to him “I’m SO sorry I am taking up a few extra minutes of your busy day. You are free to get off of the counter and find a different lane if you would like.” He kept going ON and ON about how he wished he would have known I was cheap and if I would not buy so much junk food, I would be able to afford my groceries. (The only “junk” I had was Oreo’s and that was for a treat for school) I was so steamed but kept my cool because of my kids. After what felt like FOREVER, my nice cashier said to me “Wow..you saved around 70.00”. So, I turned to the man behind me and in the sweetest voice said “Sir, I am not sure what you do for a living but $70.00 in 3 minutes, I’m sure I just beat that. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Smiled….and walked away. I was seriously about in tears but held it together and now I think I can about deal with anyone.

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Good for you to stick up to those people when they treated you so rudely. That cashier deserves a strong complaint with a manager about her disgusting behavior to a customer-so many people would love to have her job right now. And shame on the customer behind you. If she didn’t like it all she needed to do was go to another line. People have some nerve!

        • Janelle

Isn’t it funny how people find time to shop for hours but do not have 5 minutes to wait in line? Sounds like some people need to manage their shopping time better LOL! I always tell the people and cashiers if I have time to shop then I have time to wait! Hope one day the people behind me huffing and puffing will get the hint 🙂

    • Pamela J

WOW, I love to read about your experiences. Lisa S. good job sticking up for yourself…and that was a great comeback about making 70 dollars in a few min. Loved it! Great job ladies for standing strong.

      • Ailin

Go Lisa!!! Great comeback! HE looked like a fool in the end. Pople really have no idea how much money can be saved using coupons intelligently. I used to think saving 5-6 dollars was a great deal, but now I am aiming for at least 50% saved before I am happy.

    • Amanda S.

Oh my goodness… Way to stand your ground!! I am proud of you for not being intimidated by all that! And as far as that old bag behind you, YOU WERE THERE FIRST!! She needed to Shut it and mind her own business! Don’t you worry about her. Whenever someone behind you complains always remind yourself that, they can either find a new lane or wait because you got there first. If she was in that much of a hurry she would have been in front of you! 😉 But the more people back down and let cashiers “make up” thier own rules because they can’t read their own store’s policies just makes it harder for the rest of us! Way to Go!!!

      • Amanda S.

Oh and Way to go Lisa too!!! I am not encouraging people to be mean to one another either but we have all been there where someone behind us looked like a darn fool getting mad at us for saving so much money. Like Collin Says: “They are just jealous of our savings!!” And Congrats on saving $70 that is AMAZING!!

        • Katie

I have had some good and bad experiences from customers behind me in the line. The bad are usually in Walmart ( I don’t know why, other than maybe because the cashier scrutinizes every coupon before taking it) but I had a great experience in line at Kroger one time, a man walked up behind me and I immediately told him I had a bunch of coupons and he said, ” I know, I want to see how much you save”, then before we got to the end, he says, ” I think Kroger’s is going to have to pay you money”. I love that type of response. And honestly I think most people are impressed with the savings at the end. But, I must admit I do hate grumpy people, it just seems so senseless.

  19. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Putting up signs is one thing, but seeing is believing! I’ll believe it when I can go in and purchase my groceries with my coupons and not have to have the cashier take a dozen items off my bill because she can’t take a coupon for it. Then I’ll be grinning all the way through the parking lot 🙂

  20. alex

This is so awesome! I have not gone back to walmart in a long time! Maybe I should go check out my walmart and see if mine has made those changes too!!

  21. Sarah

I have never had any problems using coupons or price matching at my Walmart, which is good because the closest Target, etc. is 45 min away. (We do have a Walgreens and small grocery stores) I actually have to praise my cashiers at Walmart because they are SUPER paitent with me. For example, I checked out with my husband and son Saturday night really late, and had at least 10 or 15 items that I price matched. Also had pretty much one coupon for each item I bought (20-30 items total). I apologized to the cashier and told her she might hate me after this. She didn’t even bat an eye, just checked us out with a smile. So its not all Walmarts. 🙂

    • Jennifer

I’ve had this kind of experience more at mine, too–nice cashiers who aren’t mad at me when I ring up three separate orders, use coupons, and price match all in one shopping trip. It’s not always w/o problems, but thankfully my experience has been more positive.

  22. Shannon

SOOOOOOOOO Cool! It’s great to feel like you helped in this! Way to go Collin!

  23. Denise

I had one of the worst experiences at Walmart on Friday. I had one of the ‘Pet Shop’ coupons and I forgot to give it to the cashier. So I went to “Customer Service” (and I use that term loosely) they had total additude and told me I couldn’t use the coupon b/c I didn’t give it to the cashier. So, I said “Fine, then I’ll return the two toys and you can ring them up and then take my coupon” They both looked at me dumbfounded. Then I said “Which would you prefer to do?” Well, they both decided to just give me the adjustment, I’m sure out of pure lazyness. Then the ‘head customer service person’ looked at me with total additude and said “Don’t try to come in here and do this again, this is the last time” I happened to mention I my way out that her customer service skills sucked. She tryed to make me feel like I was doing something wrong.

That is why I used to spend about $150.00 a week at Walmart and now maybe $10 every couple of weeks….Their loss!

  24. Connie

I would realy like to see how many towns they have there signs, “We price match any competitor Prices and Coupons! ”
If you have seen signs at your store would you put the name of the town in your comments.
    Thanks

    • Margie

      None in Northwestern PA

      • MA

        None in Flippin, AR

        • couponsnoopy

none in Charleston, SC. I just left there. They have no problems with coupons though.

          • Renee

I love Charleston-my daughter went to CofC.

    • Kristy

I did not see any in Ft Wayne In tonight but i have never had any problems there with price matching or with coupons

  25. me on 28th Ave SW

I think the emails did make a difference. I had a frustrating experience at my Target (Seattle) 2 days ago. I had 2 coupons; $1/Dove antiperspirant and $1/ any Tide product. Neither had size exclusions and both were about to expire. I purchased a trial sized Dove (1.07) a trial sized Tide (.97) as well as 4 Oil of Olay eye creams (each around $9) to get the 2- $5 Target Gift Cards. You would have thought I was trying to hold-up a bank. The Dove coupon went right through, but the Tide beeped. First I was told I couldn’t use the coupon unless it was one of the 3 Tide items pictured on the coupon (in spite of the “any Tide product line on the coupon), then I was told I couldn’t use it because it exceeded the price of the product. I polited told them they were wrong and that they could reduce the price down per their written policy which I offered to show them. Instead, they just overrode it and took the coupon but now before approximately 3-4 minutes of the two of them reading every letter and word on the coupon. I am still pretty new at this, and am learning slowly to have a tougher skin, but I still get rattled by it every time. Hard to believe they actually make a PROFIT on the coupons the way they behave. Plus, let’s face it, they wouldn’t have a job if we werent’ there in line for the transaction, no matter what the dollar total is……

  26. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow!!! REALLY hope I see these signs at my stores!!!

  27. rachel

I tried using the $2.00 off ANY schick disposable razor at Walmart on a $1.97 package. It beeped and the cashier told me I couldn’t use it because it is not in the picture. I said it says ANY disposable razor and she called another lady who told me the same thing. I said forget it. Then it was well it is $1.97 and the coupon is $2.00

It all depends on the cashier!

  28. Aliya

    Wow, that walmart has grass?!

Awesome about the new coupon policy.

  29. Roni

I didn’t think the letters would work, but maybe they did. I will be excited when I actually see it….I’ve always had problems with Internet Printed coupons at Walmart.

  30. cyndi

The message obviously did not get to the coupon nazi at my walmart. I had the worse experience ever today. All of my coupons matched and she ended up using them. But she was really grumpy and made me pull every item back out the bag so she could match the numbers on the coupons. She didn’t even attempt to scan them until she had verified. She kept trying to say I didn’t get what the coupon said. But then when I pulled it out, it was exactly what the coupon was for.

    • Steph Hess

Oh do I know about coupon nazi’s One of the cashiers at my cvs has to do the same thing with the coupons she won’t try to scan them. She has to read them all and lays them all out on the desk. it’s sooooo annoying. You’d think I was taking money out of her pocket. I posted about it too . Every trip in there she tells me she gets in trouble for taking my coupons and their not allowed to take these anymore oh whatever ! https://www.bargainfun.net/2010/05/cvs-charmin-tp.html

  31. Angela W

COUPON SPECIALIST!!!! Can we get those at ALL of the stores??? It’s time to write Walgreen’s and Target too! This is AWESOME 🙂

    • megan

Yeah, really. Coupons are not that hard. Seriously, ALL of the employees should be “specialists.” LOL

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

good idea the letter should be sent to all the stores (target, walgreens, cvs, and riteaid I believe I have had problems with every store at one time or another.

  32. Elaine

Did Collin hear back from walmart after she sent them the email?

  33. Christa K.

I”ll believe it when I see it. 😉

  34. Joy

I meant to also add that I think Walmart could lure in more loyal customers if they doubled coupons. 🙂

  35. Shanna

I am not buying it yet…I was at a store just yesterday and before the cashier even let me pull my cart up she told me she would not take the interent ones, I told her she would, she got an assistant manager, the girl said they could only take one per purchase and would have to ring my order up separately….then they told me they would not honor a coupon for $1off one thing, and when i bought it i got the other item free coupon…..had me so angry at the end…I told her….”have fun putting all this shit back up on the shelves, and a seriously hope you enjoy the phone call i will be making to your manager :)” hmph!

    • Nicole

Haha.. I love that reply. My last bad Wal-Mart experience ensured I won’t be shopping there unless I’m forced to. I did just about the same thing. I told the manager to have fun putting all my groceries back. I also wrote down her name and got her in trouble with the regional manager (the manager actually TOLD ME she was going to be sat down and “talked to” about how rude she was to me, which doesn’t seem like good business practice, but hey, it was satisfying for me. lol).

I seriously think it’s lack of training combined with power trips. I worked at Wal-Mart when I was younger. It lasted a few months before I walked out. Nobody can tell their head from their a** at that place (no offense if anyone works there) but it’s like the blind leading the blind. There’s no real leadership in place.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i agree i used to work as a cashier at walmart. i was lucky because i grew up with my mom using coupons, but there is not really any formal training on how to take them and if you did not grow up using them you were out of luck. there # one rule was the customer is always right… but then you had to be afraid of getting in trouble for trying to make people happy. total contradiction there. you would have liked my cashiering because i looked at the sale papers, and someone came through my line with an item on sale i automatically priced matched without them asking. and i loved taking coupons to help save people money… as long as it wasn’t someone trying to pull one over on you using 50 coupons for nothing that they bought

        • Sarah

My husband worked at Walmart the summer before we got married and he has told me many times when I have worried about whether or not the cashier will price match something that they should not matter what. He ALWAYS price matched (as long as it sounded reasonable) because he figured that the person could always take their business to the other store. He also has told me that he would often price match other people’s stuff w/o telling them if he had found out about a price match for that item.

I had that problem for the first time the other day at Walmart in Springville, UT. The cashier said I could only one per purchase and would have to ring my order up separately. I had to do do two transactions because I was getting 2 Huggies and had 2 coupons for the same item? I tried the “how many am I purchasing lingo” and she said they were having a hard time being re-imbursed with 2 coupons of the same on the same transaction. ???

That’s really great!! I get “offers” from customers at there when they see my heavy coupon binder. They say I’m really smart shopper (even lots of cashiers tells me very often!!) and want to know how to do it, how much I can save, where they can find great deals ( Hip2save, of course!!) etc. Since I live in small town, I heavily rely on Wal-Mart with coupons and I always try to get the line who is coupon friendly. Now I have some “coupon friends” form there!! We can share great offers by whoever does.I see some coupon shoppers sometimes but not like as I do. I hope my local WM will get the sign asap!!

I had a really good experience couponing this week at Walgreens. The cashier showed me how I could buy the 3 Neutrogena bars of soap, get the $10 RR, then use it on the other items I was buying. I got 2 freebie RR coupons on Always pads and Always pantiliners and a $2.50 RR when I checked out. YAY!!!

Today, I went to Walmart and they took 3 of my internet coupons and 3 others were rejected. The cashier said something about someone had hacked into the computer system using internet coupons so if the register doesn’t take them then they cannot manually apply the coupons. She also said one of my coupons was for $1.00 off of a .97 cent product so that’s why the register was not taking it. So I told her to deduct the 3 items from my total because I was not going to get them without the coupon. Oh, well. I left Walmart feeling like I did not want to shop there again. I’m hoping that Meijer’s has a better coupon policy…I’m going to try my rejected coupons at Meijers. HA!!!

My worst experiences have been with Target. When I started couponing Walgreens was great. Walmart takes my coupons but it takes them SO LONG to ring/scan them in….. A manager usually has to be called over because someone is “not sure”. At Target in MD they were down right unkind – after 6 times of being harrassed at my local target in Talbot Co MD I finally called and complained to corporate – the 1-800 number. They said the’d speak with the store but who knows what ever happened. I usually have to call over a manager at Target. I’m always respectful and polite but firm. I have 4 kids and shopping with coupons does take extra time – no doubt about it. My husband says to look at it like you are paying yourself to save. I just wish the cashiers would say something nice like “no problem” or I’m happy to scan them – don’t worry about it” anything really would be nice. Instead but at my local Target they don’t smile and they treat you like you are a big pain in the but with coupons. I have never had anyone behind me in line be unkind – many times they say “wow! I need to start using coupons” or “good for you!” things like that!!!

At Walmart – they don’t treat me bad for using coupons it’s just no one seems to know really what to do with them or how they work…. It takes about 15 mins when I hand over a stak of coupons.

I did have a Walmart issue in Easton MD today – I had to return something I purchased with a coupon and they said I couldn’t the coupon back and I would not get the money back – not even a store credit! Does anyone know of a policy with Walmart if you return an item and used a coupon to purchase the item? I know they get reimburst for the coupons…. Anyone ever tried to return an item to Walmart that was purchased with a coupon????

Sorry about any spelling errors in my message – 4 kids – trying to type FAST!@!!!!!!

so i absolutely love my target and have never had a problem using store and man q’s. the man. q’s always beep but they always pust them through. today i went and tried to use both coupons on 5 items. all my man. q’s beeped and they wouldnt take them. they said if the register declines, then they cant accept them. i didnt want to make a big fuss and there were customers behind me so i just took back my man. q’s and paid minus the target q’s. i got good enough savings with the target q’s but would have been way better with both. i just didnt get it, because my store has always take both.

Here is my personal issue with this whole “Walmart will price match ANY coupon” thing. Has anyone thought of the laziness on Walmart’s part? I mean, the other stores are PAYING to have these coupons printed and it’s like Walmart is saying “hey, you other stores do the work for us and pay to print the coupons…we’re just going to sit back and let you spend your money to do it. But hey, when it comes time for the consumer to use them, they should come to us.” It’s like the Little Red Hen story. No one wanted to help do the hard work of making the pies, but they sure as heck all wanted to EAT them! That’s the same here with Walmart. I, personally, will price match at Walmart from other stores, but I have a big problem with and will not use competitor coupons there. I think that’s just morally wrong. The other stores are doing the work and should reap the benefits. I know not everyone will agree, but I just hope that others will at least CONSIDER this point before they rush out to use their coupons at Walmart. Why should Walmart get off so easy?

It’s very likely though, that Wal-Mart has to take the brunt of that cost then, right? It’s not as if they can mail off their coupons to Target to redeem? I mean, if you use a coupon at Target that’s just Target giving you a discount, not the manufacturer. Target released those coupons on their website with that discount in mind. Wal-Mart just kind of gets blindsided with it and not reimbursed. I’m sorry if I’m totally wrong here, that’s just how I understood how store coupons work? I could be wrong?

I had a REALLY big issue with customer service at a local wmart last week…I called corporate customer service and was so upset…they couldn’t believe what had been said to me. The store manager called and we had a nice long chat, and I took the opportunity to talk to her about negative feeback i’d gotten at my last workshop regarding their store…she didn’t like to hear that and said that they would be doing some re-training with their cashiers. Hopefully she sticks to that! And hooray if they took all of our emails seriously!

I definitely hope to see a difference! Unfortunately for me, the difference just got worse! I have never had any trouble until TONIGHT with them & coupons! When I first handed the cashier my coupons, she looked at my stack and told me they only accept one internet coupon per person. I actually laughed out loud. Then I pulled out my walmart coupon policy (handy/dandy) 🙂 and showed her. So then she had to call a CSM….anyways, my check-out time was at least 20 minutes. SO annoying. In the end, the only coupon she would not take is my BOGO creme de la creme. 🙁 She said (and the CSM did as well) that they will NOT take coupons for free items. IS THIS TRUE?? They are all thoroughly confused. 🙂

that is the coupon I had trouble with. They did finally take it.

My walmart is great! I have never had issues with coupons…yet.. my biggest problem is with Walgreens.. not only are the employees rude, but I always seem to know more about coupons than they do. Walgreens really needs to have a set coupon policy for all their stores. Its ridiculous that I have to explain the coupon to item ratio to the STORE MANAGER!! I try to be polite as possible but its very difficult when the employees are soooo rude and mean!! I would love for you to send Walgreens a letter about this. Thanks Collin…your awesome!!

I don’t think this is happening at my local walmart, the other day I price matched drumsticks and dibs, the cashier wouldn’t allow it, saying that the walgreen’s ad said 2/5 for them to price match it needs to say 2.50 each, blah, blah, blah, I went to the CS desk and asked them to price match she did, and then I went to hand over my 1/1 coupons and she said we don’t price match and take a coupon on top of it, I explained that they will get the money back and she went ahead and did it, but why does walmart have to be a nightmere. Then today I used some coupons and the cashier didn’t adjust the coupons for .03 on each one and the register beeped at her when she hit the subtotal button and printed a paper asking to get managment approval the manager came over and unscanned all my coupons then rescanned them with the adjusted prices for a total of 40 cents, Man sometimes I just want smooth sailing when I use coupons.

Congrats Everyone…great job! Sounds like the letters made a difference! Sorry I did not get to partake….I was on and off during the last two weeks….the hubby, my lil guy and I were on a 2 week Staycation….so thanks to the nice weather…we were out having fun as a family…and as much as I enjoyed myself…I can say I didnt miss the deals and all that was going on!

  47. BrandyK

I doubt that the letters made a difference in the grand scheme of things. None of the Wal-Marts here have changed (I was actually in one today for the first time in months to get some pool floatie things for my daughter and I was in a hurry, otherwise I would have gone elsewhere).
I’d like to think that they would, but I suspect you’d have to have several thousand or more before someone would sit up and take notice.

I’m glad some people are seeing a difference though- that’s great! I personally don’t bother using coupons at Walmart anymore, it’s too much hassle when I can get great deals elsewhere.

  48. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

SO AWESOME!!! We need to continue as a group & inform store after store of there poor coupon policies. Together we CAN make a change! My first choice- TARGET! Love that store but have a lot of coupon issues. They think the “limit one coupon” means you can only have ONE coupon even if you are buying multiple of the same product. This wording actually means you can only use ONE coupon per item purchase. (Ex. I can not use 2 manufacturer coupons on 1 Olay face wash). They think a “purchase” is everything in the order, however all the items together is a “transaction”. this specifics matter because of the wording on the coupons. Ex. One target coupon per “transaction”.

I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, EVERYTHING I BUY FROM STORES WILL ALWAYS HAVE A COUPON. I WENT TO MY WALMART SUPER CENTER TO BUY GROCERIES. AFTER SPENDING AN HOUR AND A HALF ON FINDING THE RIGHT ITEMS FOR THE COUPONS (don’t we all like to save money???) I GO TO A CHECK OUT LINE AND THEY SAID THEY NO LONGER ACCEPT ONLINE COUPONS BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CAUSING ‘FRAUD’ WITH COUPONS. WHAT DO I DO WITH A FULL CART OF FOOD/ITEMS THAT I DON’T WANT TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR? (all the coupons i had were $1+ coupons, the saving adds up when you have a lot of coupons.) I seriously think that these people that work at walmart (the one near me at least) are way to committed and dedicated to their jobs. I’ve always had trouble with this store and its just a hassle. Oh, and the lady that told me that they no longer ‘take’ internet coupons said that they started this new ‘rule’ last week.

  50. Jennifer

Maybe it did. My Wal-mart normally doesn’t take the coupons for the Disney 10.00 off bluray/dvd combo packs from us but yesterday (after some questions) they took it. The final person said if it scans then take it! It’s progress…..
