Do you buy name brand products because you believe that they do indeed taste better than generic (i.e. are you a brand snob 🙂 )? Or do you sometimes buy generic products because you believe that that they taste the same as their name brand counterparts? Well, as most of you know, lots of name brand products are actually cheaper than store brand items when you wait for a sale and use a manufacturer’s coupon. However, sometimes buying the store brand is less expensive… it just depends. So that brings me to the point of this video… I’ve created my own Taste Testing experiment.

Watch my the video below to see what I’ve discovered. Is buying name brand always better?! You may be surprised by my results! Also, consider creating your own taste testing experiment and include your kiddos in the process.  It is a great family activity that may change the way you look at grocery shopping!

Please keep in mind that this video was actually filmed while visiting my mom in July. 🙂

Loved the video Collin. Great idea! I am not loyal to brands, but price and taste. I will have to admit that I had a good stock of name brand peanut butter, but went through it pretty fast w/a 3 yr old. So I bought winco’s chunky and really dislike it. Finishing off the big jar and back to something different. Too thick and chunky. Hard to spread on bread and I buy thick wholegrain bread. My no-bake cookies didn’t turn out the same and tasted funny. My mom even said the cookies taste and texture were funny so I told her about the peanut butter. She agreed thats what it was too. Mayo is another thing I notice a difference with. Even between name brands. Best foods really is the best! 😉 My taste buds think so anyway. Although I didn’t notice a difference between their regular and new canola oil. Which is what I bought at the last sale because the regular was out. Opened a jar and liked it. Healthier too 🙂 I am looking forward to part 2!

I was laughing at the cheerio taste test. I used to always buy store brand honey nut cheerios. Then the name brand was cheaper sometimes with coupons so I bought name brand. My kids didn’t like the name brand. I tasted them both. And I too preferred the store brand. Not quite as gritty….my store brand is market basket. But funny that your generic was better too.

Many times the manufacturers make both the name brands and the generic brands. Golden Flake packages the Publix brand chips. Therefore, they are the same chips just different bags.

I am a brand snob on a few things – cheap mayo is nasty, fake oreos – no thanks, and my husband will only eat Heinz ketchup (he can tell the difference). But my biggest snobbery is chocolate chips! If it isn’t Nestle or Ghiradelli then forget it! The others taste waxy and don’t have a genuine chocolate flavor. YUCK! I have tried all of them – even Hersheys and they just don’t cut it. Thank goodness Nestle is fairly generous with their coupons!

No one has mentioned the difference between store brand tomato paste and sauce and name brand….to me the store brands are horrible in cooking compared to name brands.

I think some people above may be right about some of the products, we should check out the difference in ingredients, like in the honey nut cheerios, etc. If there is more sugar involved, etc, it might make a product taste better.

I can’t wait to try Heinz catsup….it definitely seems to be a winner from all the comments!

Olive Oil – Walmart store brand is much better than named brands
Tomato paste – Hunts and other named brands are much better than store brands

I worked at Fareway here in Iowa and Fareway graham crackers are actually Nabisco graham crackers! Funny how we get it stuck in our heads sometimes about Name brand and store brand. I do have to admit there are a slim few things that are better than store brand. My husband went to school for mechanics in South Carolina and while they were touring the plant production stopped and they switched the labels to a store brand label. They were making oil filters. I can’t remember what kinds he said they were originally making and what they switched to. I will have to ask him!
