My Commissary Deals (I Saved 88%!)
So I headed to the Commissary yesterday and was able to score some awesome bargains! I have highlighted most of the deals I was able to score below. I purchased a total of 124 items and spent just $33.31 out of pocket (including a $9.91 Surcharge which is like Military tax). My total was $208+ before coupons, so I ended up having a savings of 88%! I was pretty excited to say the least! 🙂
Some of the items I purchased were actually better than FREE and I was able to apply the overage towards other products in my transaction! The Commissary actually allows this… in their coupon policy it states, “Valid coupons will be entered at the value stated on the coupon. If the value of the coupon exceeds the cost of the product, the customer will be given the full value of the coupon.” Pretty Cool, huh?!
For all you Commissary shoppers, I’m hoping the list below will help you save just as much as I did… possibly more! If you’re not a Commissary shopper, I am still hoping this will motivate you to clip those coupons. If I can save this much, I promise, you can too!

Happy Shopping! 🙂
Wow!
And on the surcharge: Grr!! Aren’t our military families supporting this country enough without surcharging their basic needs?
The commissary sells at cost. The surcharge just covers wages, electricity, plumbing. I hate the “tips” for baggers. 🙁
The tips are all that the baggers make. They don’t get paid by the hour. I always make sure I tip them well for their work if they are polite and do a good job. My husbands mother has been a bagger for years and works so hard for the money she earns.
i agree, i wish i can just bag my own, i don’t need a bagger!
well not quite at cost….they mark up 15%
The surcharge is for improvements, they have actually remodeled alot of commissaries and frankly some of them need it.
Its still cheaper than shopping at wal-mart and paying sales tax for the most part.
Where is and what is Comissary? Never heard of it before. Thanks
It is a grocery store on Military bases. You have to have a Military ID or a Military dependents ID.
Collin is freaking amazing!
This is fantastic! I wish you had the time to do this EVERY time you went to the commissary! LOL
I usually do pretty good when I go, but NEVER as good as you do. *sigh* Maybe one day I will get there..Thanks for all you do! I am definitely going to attempt to get some of these deals this week too!
awesome!
The commissary is the only grocery store our family shops at besides Costco. It would be so great to see more of these deal scenarios from there! I know you have a lot on your plate but could we add it to the list of regular weekly deals?
I am going to try to post Commissary deals on a regular basis! 🙂
Collin I just have a question, Is it true that you can use Your rr from walgreens at the commissary? I read it in another site, I have not tried it or even asked a manager at the commissary either, but I was going to ask next time I went. But since you posted this I wanted to ask you to see if you knew something about it. Thanks!!!
Hi Yolanda,
Check out this post:
https://hip2save.com/2010/05/update-commissary-catalina-coupon-policy.html
thanks colling for the info, I just printed out the policy. The commissary here in san antonio are somewhat not that friendly when it comes to coupons, they look at them very carefully and make sure you have exactly what it says in the coupon and one time they did not accept a coupon that I had with the target logo eventhough it said manufacturer coupon, I told the cashier that I could use it and she went to ask a manager and even the manager said no because they were not sure if target would give them the money back, so I just told her to ring up everything else because I had my 3 girls with me and didn’t wanted to spend more time there, but will see what happens when I try to use the rr this time. Thanks again for answering and for everything that you do!!
FANTASTIC!!!
I too was told that the Commissary takes RRs however, here in Charleston, they refuse to take them because they have another store’s logo on them. It seems they believe that the will not be reimbursed for these coupons. According to one of the Assistant Managers there they have taken manufacturers coupons with other stores logos on them in the past and didn’t get reimbursed for them so they will not take them anymore. I don’t understand why Publix has no problem getting reimbursed for something and the Commissary does…makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Just bring the policy with you. As long as it says “manufacturer coupon” AND does not say “redeem ONLY” they should take it. They will probably have to scan them and then key the amount in manually. I have to go through this every week, but it’s worth it to use my RRs. Today, however, I had a wonderful cashier who said, “Wow, these are great coupons.”
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME COLIN!!!!!
Awesome!!
yes, please collin I always shop commissary and kinda hectic when i have to bring my 2 small kids with me and find deals! This helps a lot you’re amazing!
Someone posted on the recent Playtex/Walgreens deal that you aren’t supposed to post commisary sales prices? Is this true?
I read something about it too, It’s against DECA policy to post prices, but you can post their percentage!!!
I found these prices myself by shopping at the Commissary. I didn’t take these prices from the Commissary Virtual shopping site, so I personally don’t think I’m doing anything wrong for posting the prices and deals I found. You have to have a Military ID to shop at the Commissary, so I don’t really understand why it matters if I post Commissary deals to the general public.
At the end of the day, I am just trying to help Commissary shoppers save money. Most of us live on a limited budget, so saving on groceries is very important. If the Commissary has a problem with me helping other Military members save money, then they’re welcome to email me their concerns. Until then, I will keep posting Commissary deals.
thats what I say!!
Good for you! (and all of us too lol) Thanks for clarifying. I didn’t really understand the whole secrecy thing either. If anything you are helping the commissary get business. I think there’s absolutely nothing wrong with posting the deals you personally find. I know this blog is your job, but you really help so many people. Thank you!
Great Job Collin! I could only imagine a cashiers face when you hand them 100 coupons 🙂 I honestly don’t think I’ve ever used so many!
I grew up on a military base my whole life and always loved shopping at the commissary. I just don’t live close enough to shop at one currently.
Thanks for the great deals Collin!
Awesome!! I am sure the price on some things varies…I am at Fort Jackson, SC a basic training post and some stuff is a lot more expensive here than at my previous post we were stationed at!
Great job! I wish I could get into that store! lol
I wish we had a Commissary closer to us. The closest one is about 2-3 hours away.
Wow, commissary prices are Cheap. My Walmart sells the Sunbelt bars for over a $1 more per box not to mention the rest of the list. I’d be happy to just get commissary prices and forget the coupons. LOL Great job! Our military families should be eating for free in my opinion!
i have to give our commissary time to restock after you’ve been there! LOL
I don’t know if it’s a glitch or not, but I just played the Schick Visual Q’s Memory Match game through the link in this post, and I won $3 off coupon, but… I kept hitting the back button and I ended up printing (12) $3 coupons – all with different serial numbers!! (I would have and could have printed out more but I am getting low on my printer ink, plus I didn’t want to be greedy 🙂
For the last 2 weeks, I’ve been getting the $3 coupon every day I play! LOVE the long EXPIRATION date!
Way to go, Collin! I’m happy for you! That’s amazing. I’m glad that military families have commissaries to shop it; it’s one way that America can say thank-you. So – thank you!
I don’t think they all have the same specials though. I know I looked at the razors trying to use my coupons a week ago and they wouldn’t have been free. Also, since I keep price lists of 3 stores (commisary, walmart, and another local grocer) prices at the commisary can fluctuate greatly. I’m not saying that I haven’t scored some great deals there but I have scored plenty of other great deals other places too.
Fabulous! You rock! I miss the commissary. 🙁
Wow! Awesome! That makes me wish I could shop at a commissary! lol
Collin. Thank you so much for posting these deals. I hope you continue to do this for the commissary. I have found quite a handful of items when I shop there that are free or better and looks like I missed a couple last trip. Also the schick hydro 3s are 29 cents after the 5.00 coupon.
CONGRATs! That is Awesome savings!!!
LOVE that you posted this!!!! ;I too shop there and would love weekly deals. I too have noticed that the prices vary SO much. One week -Kando soap for 1.99 – next week – 2.50!
From what I have been told and noticed the prices are higher around pay day so I always try to go on the opposite weeks. HTH
Really?!! That’s messed up!!!
Thank you so much! I was just thinking about making my monthly trip to the commissary last night. This will help so much with making my list. Thanks!!!
I still can’t believe u got all that for $33! I mean just 3 of those razors full price would cost that much! wowzers!
Thanks so much Collin for this nifty list of all the goodies you purchased. How ironic I am planning to make a trip to my commissary today so this helps out a bunch. Once again thanks so much for all you do!!!
Do all the commissarys take internet coupons? I went to the base exchange last week and they told me that they didn’t take internet coupons.
If you are worried about that I would suggest calling your local commissary before making the trip there. That’s what I am going to do since I live almost 2 hours away from there. If I can use them at our commissary then it is going to be worth the drive!!
I just checked the commissary site and this is what it said about internet coupons. Also, here is the link just in case you would like to read it for your self.
https://www.commissaries.com/documents/contact_deca/faqs/coupon_use.cfm
Can I use coupons generated from the Internet in a commissary?
Yes, commissaries gladly accept Internet or home-printed coupons provided they meet the following requirements – the coupons must have a typical barcode and Product Identification Number (PIN) or GS1 DataBar. A Dot Scan Barcode may appear below the expiration date, but is only required if stated on the coupon, e.g., “Do not accept without a Dot Scan Barcode below the expiration date.” Internet coupons cannot be accepted for free products, however, “Buy One Get One Free” coupons are acceptable if they meet all other requirements.
Procter and Gamble (P & G) does not authorize Internet coupons for any of their products.
The Exchange systems and the Commissaries are two totally different entities. You can’t compare the two. For Army and Air Force their exchanges are run by AAFES, for the Navy is NEX and for Marines it’s MCCS. None are in any way, shape or form affiliated with DeCA which runs ALL the commissaries on ALL military bases.
According to DeCA policies, ALL commissaries have the same coupon policy in effect, which INCLUDES usage of internet coupons.
Thanks for the coupon policy….especially about the overage. at our commissary, i can’t use a coupon a few cents over the price of the item….it has to be up to the price of the item. So, I would always take my high value coupons to shop off-base. Now, I’m going to take this policy & show them. THANK YOU!!!!
wow collin! I’m soo jealous. great job
WOW!! SOOO AMAZING, COLLIN!!!
Anyone know about how much the Shick Quattro disposable razors sell for at a regular store or Walmart?
The commissary here in FL will take printed coupons with an amount on them, but will not allow any printed coupons that have “free” on them. No B1G1 free, or try this free–unless it is an official coupon from a newspaper or snail mailed from the manufacturer. I get so excited about B1G1 free coupons, but then end up not even using them. The commissary’s prices are 99% better then out in town, even with a coupon sometimes. The commissary in ME was the same way about printed coupons.
I would talk to the manager, they do accept internet printed B1G1’s; however they will not accept a internet printable for a FREE item, meaning “1 free pack of hotdogs”
I have talked to the manager here. Because the coupon is giving you an item for free, according to the coupon, they won’t accept them. They really hate printed coupons here anyway. I get the evil glare, and they reach down and pullout the “fraud coupon book” to verify them. I don’t look like the type to pull a scam, but they still tend to treat me like it!
🙁
thank you, thank you, thank you! I quit going to walgreens because of all the problems with rr’s but now Ill be taking them to the commisary 🙂
Thank you for posting the commissary deals. I usually do all my grocery shopping there as well. Unfortunately, most of the prices are higher at my commissary, so I am not quite getting as good of a deal. For instance, the the Schick Hydro 3 razor was 6 something so I got it for almost 2 bucks instead of Free with the 5 dollar coupon;( It seems that they change the prices around a lot though because one week, those Fishers Nuts were 99 cents, but then the next week they were 1.99.
Congratulations! For those who are not able to shop at the Commissary–can we share our great shopping deals at other stores in the same manner. I don’t know why but I love these kinds of posts no matter the store. I don’t do it often but once in a GREAT while I pull off a deal like this and it would be fun to see other shoppers great deals too. Just food for the thought.
Thanks for posting this!
I used to have a “Commissary/PX” couponging blog but I shut it down after they came up with the “its illegal to post commissary prices online” I guess for the general public, unless you have a login for commisaries.com you arent supposed to be able to see the pricing there?
so I just do what I can do for myself, but i look forward to more commissary posts we’re always left out : (
Print out that DECA policy!! I have to use it EVERY time I shop at my commissary. The cashiers at mine are convinced they have to reduce the coupon! I went to the same girl 3 weeks in a row(figured she would remember the policy) and she said the same thing each time! EVEN after the manager came out and corrected her each time.. Why does it matter to her if I get overage. REALLY.
And YES they do increase the prices around pay day. I noticed that AS WELL. I always do my shopping there around the end of the month.. since it is cheaper.
The commissary DOES allow internet printables and they SAY so in their policy. They do NOT take free internet printables (doesn’t include bogos they take those) and ALL printables have to meet their guildlines..
I called the commissary one time to ask for a price and they WILL NOT TELL YOU.. I live off post so I would hate to drive there if MY item wasn’t on sale :(.
NOW AAFES has a new coupon policy as well! SO print that out too! The PX/BX is Run by AAFes not Deca like the commissary so the policies are DIFFERENT. You can NOT get overage at the PX/BX. They will adjust it so it is free.
Did you get the uso coupon book in the mail? I was wondering how to use it. It is the family unit that donates 25 cents for every coupon used. you buy tide you get downey free etc. Can we use a coupon on the tide plus the bogo coupon? I am not sure what there rules are and I have to go 2 hours for the nearest commsiory we only have a class 6 store and a gas station here.
I would like to know this too as our commissary is 45 mins away. The coupons would be awesome if we could pair them with additional money off coupons for the item that isn’t free.
I didn’t even see your comment before I made mine. They do not allow a money off the one your paying for and a B1G1 it’s either one or the other. That’s the only thing I do not like about the commissary.
Oh how I miss the commissary when my husband was in the Navy. Got the best deals there!
wow i shop at the commissary all the time and i didn’t realize that they up the prices during payday time…that sucks!! need to keep my eye on that next time…thanks guys!!
I love my Commissary yet the most I have saved is 47%..you rocked it Collin!!
I Love Love Love they allow coupon overage with no hassle. I wish our Commissary had a bigger travel section though ;0)
The only problem I have is why don’t they let you use 1 B1G1 and 1 other coupon?
i have the same problem… they wont let me use a b1g1 and a coupon on the not free item… they say the coupon is for BOTH items…
What is the deal with the Energizer charger/batteries in the picture. I read the post and unless I missed it, I did not see it listed. Did you use the FREE pack coupon we got from facebook??? Thanks!!!
i’m pretty sure it was with that coupon… in my commissary they wouldnt let me use the coupon on the one charger with batteries… because the coupon only sayed.. Batteries on it… even tho the price of the charger with batteries was only $12.99, which was the max. amount of the coupon…
Yes, I used the coupon I received from the Facebook promo! 🙂
lucky you.. haha… in my commissary they are VERY picky… thank god we move soon… *lol*
can i get a WOOT WOOT
WOOT WOOT!
YOU GO COLIN!
OOPS COLLIN:)
Thanks for the commissary post! I never seem to do more than 40% savings there. Your super awesome deal is an encouragement to keep trying! I would LOVE to see more commissary posts!
Thank you so much for the deals at the Commisary. I try to go grocery shopping every two weeks. You were able to get some sweet deals. Any advice you might have to help me save more, would be greatly appreciated. My email address is suzie.premo@centerstone.org.
I know the surcharge is annoying but in VA you have to pay taxes on the total amount BEFORE coupons and our rate is 5% so on $208 it would be $10.40. So I think you are coming our pretty equal on that one.
here we pay tax on total before Q’s as well and we pay 9.25% !!!!
Hi! This list is great….I also love your blog! I know of another site that provides a list of the items on sale at the commissary as well by just linking the coupon with it (www.saving4military.com, but you have to be very careful with what you post.lf you post commissary prices through public media you can lose your commissary priviliges. This list is awesome but very very careful!! Kelli:)
watch for a coupon for GET ONE FREE Kraft Mac n’ Cheese Homestyle Dinner when you buy any 2 Chinet plates. I used my 2 – $1 off from Chinet website. I found these at the commissary in Jax, FL and Fort Bragg, NC. (expires 9/30)
This is awesome!!! I am curious- how often do you guys go grocery shopping? Do you go weekly or do you wait until you have gotten together a good arsenal of coupons? I try to go weekly, but sometimes I can’t get all my coupons in order that fast.
Can you take Catalinas from a store, like Dillons, and use them at another store, say Walgreens, as long as they say manufacturer coupon on them even if it would have Dillons printed on it? That is so confusing to me cuz I thought you could only use them at the store specified…a little confused. Any info is greatly appreciated!
As long as it says “manufacturer coupon” and it doesnt say “only redeemable at” then you should be able to use it at any store. With the comissary specifically, they changed their policy recently and will now take catalina coupons that print from other stores- as long as they say manufacturer coupon. The little coupons hanging in the blinkie machines are usually just manufacturer coupons and can be used anywhere. I have taken both types from DIllons and used them at other places, including the comissary.
oops- just reread your post. I am not sure about using them at walgreens, because I dont have one here, but I do know that if they say “manufacturer coupon”, you should be able to use them at other stores. The ones that say “Dillons Coupon” or “Shoppers Coupon” in the spot where is usually says “manufacturer coupon”, have to be used at that store only. (Unless you have a store that honors other peoples coupons). Michaels and Staples both honor other stores coupons. (I know thats not groceries, but it might come in handy some day)
Hey…..I love the commissary post that you did! I do the same as well. I don’t want to get into anything but you might want to be careful about the price posting because the commissary will revoke your privilige. I was told very impolitely by the commissary that I am only allowed to connect coupons to the item and show the percentage saved. Anything beyond that is not aloud, due to the fact that the commissary offers military the specific items without a markup. Good for you for posting the great deals ….it is so awesome…but I just wanted to give a heads up. Amy
