Walmart: Can You Believe these Prices on Fruit?!

I had to post this… not necessarily because I believe you’ll be able to score this deal at your local Walmart (Walmart’s prices vary so much by location) but because, well, these are awesome prices on fruit and I just had to share! Reader, Kristin, who lives in Bismarck, ND, was able to score peaches and nectarines for just $0.25 per lb AND grapes for $0.50 per lb!! Can you say sweeeeet?!

Have any of you been lucky enough to find similar prices on fruit at your local Walmart? If so, let us know what city and state you are in and the prices you found. Thanks much! 🙂

too bad my Walmart has horrible produce!!

    • Jesi

i agree i bought produce there once and it spoiled SO FAST!!! i gave a couple of more tries but learned my lesson, farmers markets and publix have the best produce!

      • Lola

Same here. No produce from Walmart for us.

    • Brenda Southall

We must shop at the same Walmart. Terrible produce…

  2. Lindsay

Ooooooohhhhh……I will check in with my local Walmart and let you know if I find similar savings. Thanks for the heads up Collin. 🙂

  3. Maria

My Wal-Mart has really horrible produce. It doesn’t even look edible most of the time. Really sad.

  4. Casandra

O I live in Mississippi and we had $0.50 grapes as well at our walmart!!

    • Heather

What part of MS??? I live in MS too and would love to find some at that price!

  5. Rhonda Alexander

My Wal Mart has ‘some’ great food finds…if you get some really hard never going to ripen NECTERINES, as I did, cook them down a little with some sugar and a sqeeze of lemon!! THE BEST!!!

  6. mamabear

Whoa! I’m seeing lots of peach cobblers in her future!!!

  7. Sarah

Our Wal-Mart never seems to have good fruit…and when it looks good and I buy it it seems to be rotting the following day at my house. Those really are amazing prices though.

  8. Larissa

I live in Bismarck and hardly ever buy fruit there. Most of the time its HORRIBLE. But there is the occasionally few and far between that i will find some good fruit. I might have to check this one out.

  9. Takako

My local Walmart produces are very limited and intend to higher prices more than metro area. I buy their produce whatever on sale AND the quality is really good. I have to compare those prices all the time with one of my local grocery store where produces are always fresh. I wish all of Walmart stores could do the sale like the picture!! 🙁

  10. Julie York

We are in Kansas City and I scored red grapes for $0.50 per pound which was AWESOME! Our plums were also a quarter a pound but I didn’t try any. The grapes were fabulous though!! Target has also had some awesome green grapes for 99 cents per pound which is also a good price in my opinion (especially for Target!) I used a $1 off produce from Target.com and got a pound of grapes free!!

  11. Amy

Cheap or not, its still WALMART produce.

  12. Tricia

I am jealous. My Walmart does not have good prices on produce. They do not take internet coupons either. My regular grocery store gives me a better deal. Most times, Walmart costs even more than the regular stores here on much of what it sells.

    • Ronni

Don’t be jealous, it’s not the best quality….I live in central CA, my father has a great garden including grapes….they are the BEST……and FREE!

  13. Natasha

Our local Walmarts have MOLDY fruit all the time. When you tell them about it they just say “Okay” and do nothing.

    • Tina

Call the number on your receipt and keep complaining till it gets taken care of. A squeaky wheel get the oil!

    • Julie

Just call home office at 1-800-WALMART. Tell them whats going on and give them the store #, its located at the top of your reciept (ST#). WalMart is in the business of making money, so if you complain to people that have some control over issues like that, they are going to do what they can to make it right and keep you happy and coming back.

  14. Toni Fanelli

Ellijay, GA – All grapes were $0.88 per lb and the red grapes were wonderful. I bought 3 bags because my kids love them.

  15. Angie

I will have to check tommorrow when I go into town. : )

  16. Paulette

WOW glad I’m not the only one that thinks Walmart has horrible produce. Doesn’t matter how cheap it is if it’s inedible. Even if it looks OK in the store by the next day it is rotten. I buy my produce at Costco and Target and even Smiths, but NOT walmart. But thanks for posting all your great deal finds!!

  17. Tallymomma

Does anyone know how long fruit is good for when frozen?

    • Briar Rose

could probably google it and get how to and how long.

    • jamie e.

A lady that I work with, her grandma (who is in her late 90’s and lived through the depression) would probably tell you that fruit will last forever in the freezer! A couple of months ago the lady I work with was telling me that her grandma pulled some chickens out of the freezer and told her to give them to the homeless shelter for her! These chickens had dates on them from the 60’s!!! haha! I don’t think I would keep your fruit that long, but I am sure you would be ok for a year or 2! I think the main thing you have to worry about is freezer burn and that wont hurt you to eat it just may not taste very well!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Well in my culinary classes they told us that frozen fruits and veggies last 6months to a year. Hopes this helps.

  18. Briar Rose

I don’t buy produce at my walmart because I can buy really great looking/smelling fruit and before I go to bed that night it is rotten! Sucks to waste money on it. Might have to go check though and get me some fruit for lunch!

And our walmart seems to be higher priced than HEB here! So much for ‘roll back’.

  19. Nicole

I usually dont buy my produce at Walmart but I happened to be in there a couple days ago. Bananas were .38/lb, Grapes were .85/lb, and strawberries were $1.60 a container. Definately cheaper prices than the grocery store. Theses are the 3 things I bought and they were actually in great shape! I might have to go back and see what else is cheap. Appleton/WI

  20. Barbie

I bought the red grapes at Wal-Mart and they were out of this world~firm and so sweet they tasted as if they had added sugar! I went to Ingle’s (more expensive store known for their produce) and assumed I would be getting the same quality (and paying .55 more per lb) and I was mistaken. Those red grapes were not edible by anyone’s standards.

Think I’ll swing by Wal-Mart today. I love my evening red grapes.

  21. Charlotte

OH! I would buy enough to slice and freeze for smothies, make at least five peach crisp. For the freezer.

  22. Carrie

I’d have to be willing to shop at Wal-Mart. I know many other people who love it, but it’s just not worth it to me.

  23. Kari C

Too bad my Wal-Marts produce SUCKS 🙂

  24. Katie

I went to my Super Walmart today for printer cartridges and also was caught off-guard by the fruit prices–red and green grapes were 88 cents a lb and lemons were 25 cents each! Peaches were also 25 cents each.

  25. Kat

My closest Wal-Mart has produce that is always fresh and much cheaper than the grocery store. (No, I don’t work there, and I don’t care one way or another if anybody shops at Walmart or doesn’t!) I have the exact opposite problem than most of you are describing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Publix, but their produce is just so-so and it goes bad VERY fast. Case in point: I bought apples there last week that wrinkled up and got soft in just a few days at room temp. Apples? They should last at least a week in the fruit bowl, that’s not a lot to expect. Also, fruit is usually 70 to 80 cents a pound cheaper at WM.I make an extra stop at WalMart just for the produce, there’s that much difference.

  26. Heidi

I live in Washington state and at my local Walmart the peaches were on sale for .15 cents a lb.!!!! Awwweessoommee!!

  27. brooke lane

geeez.. i wish!! i was excited about bananas being .46/lb the other day.. but the peaches are still 1.20 something a pound.. lucky her!!

  28. Melissa

I found Pops Mix-Its the other day on sale for 4/$1. I think they had been $1 a bag last time.

    • Takako

I got same deal as well. I purchased Double Fudge and my daughter likes it. Of course I like the price!! 😉

  29. Jamie

In case anyone was wondering what to do with all those grapes – try freezing them the red are especially good frozen (just rinse them and flash freeze them on a cookie sheet so they don’t stick together) my kids love frozen grapes as a snack and frequently will open up the freezer and grab a handful for a quick snack.

    • jamie e.

I agree! Frozen grapes are really good! love them!

  30. Jen

My Walmart’s produce is good… I guess it just depends on the area? It’d be nice if they were on sale here! I’ll be making my own baby food and I LOVE fruits, so easy! Plus my entire family love to eat fruit all the time. In my house, fruit doesn’t have time to spoil.

  31. Roger

Yes I can believe the prices. Try finding the documentary “Wal Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices”. It’s about 5 years old now, but it will make you sick! Haven’t shopped there since then and can find just as good of a deals, elsewhere. (Maybe not the best, but I sleep better at night knowing I’ve not contributed to that unethical company. And yes, I’ve spoken to employees of Wal Mart who have confirmed some of the stories in the documentary.)

    • Barbie

It doesn’t really matter to me who shops Wally World and I get very little there, but if a documentary has to point out the ubiquitous nature of unethical behavior to folks, then I don’t have to stretch my brain very far to realize how naive most folks are.

Anygrapes, I’m sure this post wasn’t written to once again rehash the tired and stale backlash against Wal-Mart. Because we all know people are most supremely entertained by hating giant entities.

      • Roger

Personally, I don’t hate giant entities, until they become unethical, and/or personally affect me. I shop at Target, CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc., and can find just about everything I want and need, outside of grocery store chains for other foods needs. If someone were to show me unethical behavior and mistreatment of employees, not to mention localized tactics to put other businesses out of business, in addition to having local governments foot the bill for their utilities and new construction, I’d probably not shop there, either. I’m just posting information for those that may be unfamilar, unlike yourself and me. You’re right, most folks are naive, and that’s merely why I made mention. Thanks for the response.

  32. Nicole

Our walmart has bad produce too. I’m sad that it seems like a lot of walmart do but at the same time glad to know it’s not just our local walmart.

  33. Amy

Um, I think I’ll pass on the WM produce. Every time I walk by the section in our store I get grossed out… 🙁 I just paid 99 cents a lb for red grapes at Publix, but at least I know they’re good!

  34. Natty

The produce at our Wal-Mart actually tends to be better than at some other stores, especially Price Cutter (in MO here). The bananas are all I’ve seen really cheap so far, but we’ll look this weekend. We’re big fruit eaters here. Thanks, Collin!

  35. Dana

I have seen super cheap fruit prices at the super center stores, but it is sometime just for part of the day. I think they might be ‘cleaning out the old to bring in the new’ which might explain the short shelf life.

  36. Stacey F.

It’s not the produce, it’s the people who work in the produce dept. That’s why it varies with your experiences. Also, the best time to shop for produce is early mornings. New produce comes in at night and that is when the old gets culled and a majority of the new gets put out. And yes, I am employed by WalMart.

  37. jamie.s

I recently bought my husband some cheap produce. $1.88 for a huge bag of grapes, 28cents a lb for our plums, and only .38cents an apple….and I also got 2 bananas for only .48cents

  38. ac

Peaches were 25c for me also in Washington State!

I bought 8 lbs, enough to last me and friends quite a while.

    • ericka

My Wa walmart was 33 cents when I was there but that was about a week ago. I shop at the Centralia store.

  39. tracy

About two weeks ago my WalMart had Pear Apples, which are an exotic cross breed of pear & apple for $1/lb! That was a great deal considering they are probably over $3/lb at Stop & Shop.

  40. jennifer

Speaking about walmart great prices going on right now i live in fortworth texas and right now we are having like a milk war down here. they opened a new HEB down here and had milk for 75 cents a gallon and so krogers milk went on sale for 99 cents a gallon and so i went to walmart today to do my price matching and score some cheap milk and walmarts milk was 56 cents a gallon. Also they have gas at 2 dollars a gallon its like cheap week for us and you better get it while you can.

  41. Jennifer Menth

Thank you for the heads up on the prices of the fruit! I will have to check out our local one. All I hope when I go to any store is that the food will taste good, the fruit will last (and not have mold on it by the time I get home). Target had blueberries on sale last week and every carton I opened was filled with mold, but the only way you would notice it is if you took the time to open it up to see. It has happened with Grapes, raspberries and strawberries for me in the last month there. I have had my fair share of experiences buying fruit from Aldi,Walmart, Costco, Sams Club, Cub Foods, Rainbow, Coborn’s and MarketPlace on top of Target. Despite all of that I still go back and check again and don’t boycott anywhere. Why hold a grudge.

  42. Kerry

I absolutely agree about the horrible produce at walmart. I won’t buy it there anymore. I once bought bell peppers, got home, cut them and they had fungus all in them! So gross!!

  43. Jennifer A

While I love a good deal as much as everyone here, there are certain things that I pay more money for, and that is ORGANIC fruits and veggies, as much as possible. I can’t always afford organic, and if I can’t I try to at least stick to The Dirty Dozen https://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php. Peaches and Grapes are in the top 12 for most pesticide residue. You can’t just wash the residue off, it’s inside the fruit as well. There was a study done recently that linked ADHD with pesticide residue. I understand that it’s not always possible to purchase organic because money can be tight, and it can sometimes be hard to find, but I encourage everyone to research pesticide residue and how organic fruits and veggies actually have significantly more nutritional value! Hope this doesn’t offend anyone. = )

  44. Natasha Hughes

I work at WalMart (Northern Indiana) and our peaches/nectarines/plums all went down in price, lots of changes in just a few days…but mainly went from a certain price per pound to a certain price each. Most of the cashiers and I thought that maybe it would discourage people from buying so many, but when you’re getting plums at like $0.16 each, it’s only $1.60 for 10, not bad at all. The only reasoning we’ve come up with is that WIC is changing some things in October, so maybe that’s why the produce price changes.

I have never had bad produce from WalMart and it lasts quite some time in my house before going bad, I even forgot I had a cantaloupe in my refrigerator for a week and it was the sweetest one I’ve had in a long time. Now, I know my sister has had issues with the cucumbers, mushy and there was mold in the bin. She let someone know and it was taken care of right away. Sorry to hear that there are so many people disappointed with WalMart’s produce though. I agree with the person that said to call the 1-800 number, let them know, if you don’t, who will?

  45. M.M

To ripen your fruit, wrap it in a paper or paper towel, and put it in a brown paper bag, fold the top of the bag. fruit will ripen.
Adding an apple helps too. do not keep it in the sun.
It will depend on the temp. in your area to see how fast it ripens.
