Thanks for sharing this deal- my husband will love these for Christmas! I did sign up for the Amazon mom thing- now is this a trial thing that I have to then cancel at some point to not get charged anything or will I always be able to get free shipping with this? Thanks so much!!

Thanks for posting, I had accidentally ordered two of the fellowship because the link was wrong. Whoops! DIdn’t even pay attention. I called them and they were able to fix it for me!

alright so i need some help. we actually have all three of these on dvd because my husband is a big fan. is it stupid to buy these or would you say the upgrade to bluray for $24 is worth it? i haven’t watched enough blurays to know the difference myself but i hear the picture quality is better. would my husband be thrilled to receive these for christmas or would he wonder why i bought the blurays if we already have the dvds. opinions please? 🙂

      I’m wondering the same thing…

These are the teatrical versions not the extended release. I love these movies so much and the extended release is much better.

The blu ray is worth it as long as you have a blu ray player…guys are always thrilled to get blu rays, lol!

I’ve been absolutely dying to see this trilogy on Bluray, even though I prefer the extended releases. I will buy these and sell them when that set comes out. I love Amazon. Thanks for posting this amazing deal!

Walmart just released their Black Friday deals, they are having some dvds on sale for under $2!

  5. Amanda

Just ordered all 3 for $8.97 thanks to my amazon gift cards from my swag bucks! Yay!

What is the difference between the “Theatrical” release versus the “Extended” release version?

    • caseymg

The extended releases include lots of extra footage. They run about half an hour longer than the theatrical releases. It makes the biggest difference in Return of the King. It’s difficult to watch the theatrical releases once you seen all the extra scenes. 🙂

I just got all three for my dad for Christmas. I sent him your post, thinking he might want to get them for himself, and he suggested that I could get them for him for Christmas. 😉 Is it just me, or are Dad’s really hard to shop for, for Christmas and birthdays? I’m thrilled to have something so great to give to him. And I used some stored Amazon gift cards, so I didn’t have to pay anything to get them. Yay!!!!

I would wait…they will eventually be releasing all the extended editions on bluray. No point in double dipping.

This is an awesome deal!!! Our family – extended family too – are big LoTR Fans!. Thanks for sharing. It’s going to be hard for me to keep this quiet until Christmas 🙂

How can I tell if a movie is a Theatrical release vs an Extended release version?
Also, are most movie DVDs released as these 2 different versions?

I was so anxious to buy Avatar on Blu-Ray, I bought the 2-disc version as soon as it released. To my regret, I now see they have released a Collector’s 3-disc version with lots of extra special features included.
