Do you have a kiddo that is eager to learn to ride a bike but maybe you’re a little nervous about them getting injured, discouraged or both?! For me personally, I can still remember the anxiety that I felt as I watched my oldest son, Nicholas, try again and again to peddle down the sidewalk. It literally took days and days of practice and repetition before he really got the hang of it. Based on this experience, I only wish that I had known about Balance Bikes back then.

Balance Bikes are bicycles that are specifically developed to help children learn to ride the bikes safely with simple designs that lack chains and pedals……..pure “Kid Power”. The child can just sit down and start to push the vehicle around using his or her feet for help. The main benefits of choosing a balance bike are its safety, and the fact that kids can start practicing from a very young age, some as early as 12 months old. In the beginning, the seat is so low that it is possible for the child to touch the ground with his or her feet and to walk along; as your child becomes more confident, the next step is to run while sitting on the bike, and then finally to try gliding with both feet off the ground. Head over here to see some great Balance Bike Action Videos online.

Thanks to BikesThatTeach, one lucky reader will win the Strider Bike PreBike ($99 value) AND an extended seat post (a $9.95 value) to help assist with the proper fitting of the Strider as the child grows.

am I the only one that thinks this bike is a little wierd? I don’t get it, it has no chain and pedals? I think I’ll stick with the old way to to learn how to ride a bike… training wheels.

    • Lauren H

Two of my 3 have been riding a pedal bike without training wheels since they were 2 1/2. My thirds is just now 2 1/2 and will be getting a pedal bike, minus the training wheels this spring. They teach the kids balance, naturally. As the progress they lift their feet and cruse, balancing and steering. The only transition left is the pedals, and they are way less scary when they already know how to catch themselves if they fall, steer and balance.
I’m tellin’ ya, these things are GREAT!

    • MommySpendsLess

My understanding is that the kids start by almost walking while straddling the bike (like a regular ride-on toy), then graduate naturally to pushing off and lifting up their feet. As they gain confidence and balance they start holding their feet up and coasting more and more. By the time they’re 3-5 and ready for a “real” bike they’ve already mastered steering and balancing so it’s easier to focus on pedaling, instead of trying to learn to balance, steer, pedal and brake all at once.

I can totally understand going the traditional route but I think I’m going to try one of these with my daughter – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a negative review and I’ve done a fair amount of research since I was planning to get one before this post.

      • Kevin

Hello again…….I hope you are having a great Saturday morning. Your review of our new balance bike concept is correct. I would like to add just a bit of detailed education behind our balance bike concept to share. These steps of motor skill development will accelerate considering a proper sized balance bike is incorporated with your child’s introduction. We have been properly Fitting Children In-Store for more than 5 years and what most parents do not realize is that there is a minimum seat height level that is quite broad within the balance bikes on the market today measuring from 9.8 inches to 14.5. A critical fitting point is to allow 1-1.5″ of space between your child and the seat. For example if your child has an inseam of 14 inches, a properly set height for this child will be set at 12.5-13″ therefore a balance bike with a minimum seat height of 14+ inches is an improperly fitted bike. Each child will require to be able to place both feet flat on the ground with a slight bend in their legs for stability, safety and a proper running and walking motion. Without confidence and security developed in relation to a child and their new balance bike it will be very difficult to keep the child’s interest with the new bike………just soooooooo scary. We need to create a secure and comfortable atmosphere for the child to continue with an interest in their new balance bike. I hope this bit of education helps.

  29. Shantel A

I would love to win this!! I am currently looking at purchasing one for my son’s birthday and it would be awesome to not have to spend the money right now. I have heard nothing but good things about these. This would make his 2nd birthday great!

  30. Jennifer Rexroat

These are the BEST bikes!! We had one for my son and it was amazing!! The first time we took the training wheels off of his big bike he just took off riding with NO help from us!! We knew it was because of the balance bike!! If you do not have one of these, GET ONE!! Also, he was 3 and the first child in his class to ride his bike without training wheels. So cool!!

    • MommySpendsLess

What kind did you get? I’m debating between the Boot Scoot Zoomer and the Strider Pre-Bike. The Boot Scoot is about $20 cheaper (and slightly cuter in my opinion) but if the Strider is more adjustable/durable then it’d be worth the extra money.

      • Kevin

Hello….It is me Kevin / Balance Bike PRO-fitting Expert at Bikes That Teach.
