My Commissary Deals (I Saved 80% & YOU can too!)

Hip2Save may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you via trusted partners and affiliate links in this post. Prices and availability are accurate as of time posted. Read our full disclosure policy here.

So I headed to the Commissary yesterday and was able to score some awesome bargains! I have highlighted most of the deals I was able to score below. I purchased a total of 80 items and spent just $28.72 out of pocket (including a $5.93 Surcharge which is like Military tax). My total was $120+ before coupons, so I ended up having a savings of 80%! Basically each item cost me $0.36! Gotta love coupons! 🙂

Side note, the Tony’s Pizzas I purchased were actually not priced well (in my opinion)… they were $2 and I’ve seen them go on sale for $0.99 at various stores, however, I had FREE pizza coupons they had sent me for doing a giveaway previously, so decided to go ahead and used those coupons.  And I also want to mention that this wasn’t a normal grocery run for me. I was honestly just trying to get prices for various items we all have coupons for, so that I could make an extensive Commissary deals list.

Some of the items I purchased were actually better than FREE and I was able to apply the overage towards other products in my transaction (like the bread, carrots and a few other items I didn’t have coupons for)! The Commissary actually allows this… in their coupon policy it states, “Valid coupons will be entered at the value stated on the coupon. If the value of the coupon exceeds the cost of the product, the customer will be given the full value of the coupon.” Pretty Cool, huh?!

For all you Commissary shoppers, I’m hoping the list below will help you save just as much as I did… possibly more! If you’re not a Commissary shopper, I am still hoping this will motivate you to clip those coupons. If I can save this much, I promise, you can too!

I love the one Idea , Floor Wax…

        • Jennifer

It is scary to think you can use it for floor wax then turn around and use it to get busy,……LOL!!!

          • Gail

            Hahahaha!

      • Anonymous

Collin likes to get down with the Jelly!!!!!

  3. Karen

Wow! Good Job! I am jealous! The most I have ever saved at the commissary is around 20%! You had about 15 more q’s than I usually do. I keep hoping to save this much.

  4. Chelle

What I don’t like about DECA is their prices aren’t the same in all commissaries! Great job with your shopping trip!!!

  5. RK

I love seeing one of your shopping trips…in fact just the other day I was thinking it would be fun to see a list of all of your purchases for one week. (Maybe that would be getting a little too personal…) You post SO many good deals each week and I was wondering how many of them you decide to buy. Because seriously if you took advantage of EVERY deal you post on here… you are spending a small fortune each month.

    • Collin

I probably go for about 10% off the deals I post each week – no joke! I’ve learned to say “No”! 🙂 And like you said, I would be blowing way too much money and time each week if I tried to snag every single deal! Also, with each deal I post, I ask myself – Do I really “Need” this product or do I just want it? And the answer most of the time is “Want”! 😉

      • RK

Thats good to know. When I first started couponing a couple years ago I found myself buying stuff just because it was a good deal. I was spending so much time rushing out to stores too! Now my house is much cleaner and I spend more time with my toddlers.

      • JEANIE

So Colin, are you saying you need or want that KY Gel??? lol. heehee. Just messing with ya…lol.

What an awesome deal … I think most of us want the deals cuz they are sooooo awesome. My hubby asked me what we’re gonna do with all this peanut butter I purchased off Amazon … I said, we’re gonna eat cheap p&j sandwiches!!

  6. OhGrowUp

Awesome! I got some free Ocean Spray Fruit and Veggie the other day it was on sale for $1 at our commissary and I found 4 bottles that had Save a $1 now peelies on them. WOOT!

  7. Barbara

awesome! do the coupons that give overage beep?

    • Collin

Yes, they do beep and say something like exceeded value…. but the cashiers are trained to push those through as that’s what’s stated in the coupon policy. Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve never had a cashier question me on this.

      • Barbara

okay, thanks. our commissary cashiers here are pretty tough 😡

      • Natasha Luckett

        Hey Collin,
I actually carry the DoD commissary coupon policy in my purse. Just the section about coupons because the document is huge. That usually solves the problem if I have an issue with a cashier.

      • Devin

I made a coupon trip last week and had a lot of coupons that gave me overage and items that didn’t match the picture on the coupon but matched the wording and didn’t expect a problem b/c I never have and was following the coupon policy. The cashier told me I could use the coupons but they had to adjust them, I knew I was right and politely fought it, we went back and forth and she pulled the whole “my supervisor won’t allow it” but when I asked to speak to her supervisor she said she wasn’t in at the time. She finally called a manager up and was relieved when said I was correct 🙂

        • Tammy

We have a lot of problems here in Colorado at the commissaries with coupons. Not only do they limit the number of items that we get for “free”, they will adjust the coupon value down if it exceeds the price. I’ll have to try carrying the coupon policy with me next time to see if this makes a difference. I can never figure out why this is such and issue…if the coupon is valid, the commissary will get their money back from the manufacturer. I do know that the cashiers can get into a lot of trouble if they accept a fraudulent coupon, but I think technology is getting better at preventing this. The problems I encounter is one of the reasons why I try to keep my basket “low” on items and use the self-checkout when I can. It results in more trips, but luckily I’m not usually traveling too far to hit the commissary.

          • k.

i shop on peterson AFB and have no probs at all….

  8. Jess

I wonder what the cashier was thinking when she/he was checking you out! LOL!!!! Thanks for all that you do, you are wonderful!

  9. Julie

Where do you live??? If you live where Ilive i have something to tell you that our commisary has started.

    • Collin

I live in Jacksonville, NC – Camp Lejeune

      • Heather

We just left Camp Lejeune and came back to TX. I am so bummed, we would have been great friends. How long have you been there?

        • Collin

We have been here for about 3 years.

          • Kelly

I hope you move to Miramar!

          • hmfab

Even more bummed. We were there at the same time. I didn’t know about your site until recently, after returning ‘home’. You should post it on LYS.

      • Bethany

I have been trying to figure out where you live for MONTHS! It’s probably all over the website, and I’m just really slow! I also thought you’d be an West coaster…like Seattle since you love coffee so much!

  10. Melissa Potocnik

This may be a stupid question, but I’m really wanting to know, are commissaries for military families only?

    • Meg

Yes… they are for military families only. You have to have a valid military or dependent ID card at check out.

    • Leah

yes you have to be a DoD card holder

      • Peggy

my husband was in the Navy years ago… any chance for us getting in on the commissary action?

  11. Stephanie

Collin—Can you please post a list of the “many uses for KY” ? :o) LOL You are hilarious!!!

      • Kelly

When I was in the hospital having my second daughter…the nurse brought her back to me after her pictures. My husband had gone with them and he was behind her shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders. They had put a cute tiny pink bow in her “hair”, only she had none. When I felt it, I asked, “What did you use to get the bow to stick, Super Glue?” The nurse smiled and replied, “Nope. K-Y.” 🙂

  12. Julie

OK..well I live in Jacksonville, FL and the Mayport Commisary has a new thing called Wackey Wednesday…they have some awesome deals…some weeks. Some not so much….A few things was the hug tub of shedd’s spread for 49 cents, emerald peanuts for 45 cents…they have other things…nothing i would buy.

    • Colleen Middleton

Julie thanks for posting this. I am a Mayport commissary shopper. I did not know about this.
      Colin thanks for posting this.

  13. Erin

any military families from Twentynine Palms CA? I live about an hour away from base and only go every now and then but i would make a trip if it meant saving alot of money! If anyone has been to the commissary on base there could you let me know if you were able to score any deals? thanks!

    • kristen

Hey I’m in 29 Palms, too! We live on base so that’s where I do almost all of my shopping. I’ve gotten a ton of great deals at our commissary – they’ve been very coupon friendly and have a coupon table in the front that’s usually pretty stocked. If I lived an hour away I’d probably check blogs that have the deal matchups (reapyourharvest.com is a good one) and only head out here once or twice a month to get the deals and stock up on meat and other things that are always cheaper there. Or if your hubby is the service member and isn’t deployed you could send him in with a pile of coupons after work 🙂 Sorry for the long post!

      • Erin

Thankyou! good to know. yeah, I’ve thought about sending my husband lol, i just needed to hunt out the deals first 🙂 So that website you gave me, the commissary tab is for the 29 palms commissary?
I appreciate you replying to me! Huge help!

        • kristen

No, those deals are for all the DECA Commissaries. I’ve heard that prices can vary a little depending on where you are, but usually it’s only by a few cents. Yeah, I’m sure your hubby will appreciate you sending him shopping 🙂

      • mel

that’s what we do–we live 45 mins from base so I send my husband in with coupons once a week or so. He’s happy to do it b/c it’s saving us money! I normally do all my shopping at publix but when we need stuff that’s not on sale then we get it at the commissary (and all our meat!)

    • Heather

I’m in 29 Palms as well! You can definately find some good deals. I love the coupon table as well. One down fall is that a number of coupons that are published (especially for newer products) those items are not carried at the commissary becasue it is smaller in size. I’ve been excitted about different coupons a number of times only to find out that item isn’t available.

      • mira

yay 29 palms here too 🙂 i like to go to the guy cashiers they always accept my coupons. i absolutly love the coupon table sometimes i will take 2 of each and if the comi doesnt have that item i will use the manufacture ones at target or walmart when we go down the mountain.

      • KM

Hey!! This used to drive me nuts about shopping at the commissary, I’d go with tons of coupons only to find that they didn’t carry half of the newer items. I saved my sanity by going to commissaries.com and going on the shopping list tab. You can select your commissary and type in items and it will tell you if they have the item. Sometimes it’s not clear, or a really new item hasn’t been added yet, so I put those coupons in my pocket (usually under 10) and if I see it while I’m shopping I pull it out, but this has made shopping so much easier for me, now I KNOW that they have the stuff I am looking for!!

  14. OhGrowUp

At our commissary Wednesday is usually the day to go too. They have pallets and carts full with employees standing there handing out coupons to make the stuff dirt cheap! The other think I am super excited about is the Tillamook tour coming next week!! Last year they gave out $1/1 coupons and the commissary often has their 2lb loaf of cheddar for 4.99. I love cheese!

  15. Heather

Thanks for posting commissary deals! I’ve never been able to get much over 50% savings at the commissary but I like to consider how much I save when compared to real grocery stores, which makes me feel better 🙂 Our commissary in South Dakota is quite small, though, and they sometimes don’t have a lot of selection, especially for new products 🙁

  16. Jody

I discovered the KY deal as well. I purchased 13 and felt a little red in the face when the teenage boy was bagging them:). I was there with my 3 young boys too. Then I thought what am I going to do with 13 tubes of KY? I printed a copy of all the “extra” uses for KY and wrote a fun note and sent them to my close friends for a Valentine surprise. They thought it was hilarious!

    • Ashley

What a cute idea 🙂 I would have been embarrassed too. I was embarrassed buying 2, so I feel your pain!

  17. diane z

Thanks for the laugh! All that K-Y just isn’t right. Have fun.

  18. Jody

Thank you for including the Commissary!

  19. Christina
  20. JEANIE

I have know idea what Commissary is. Is it a store??? lol. I’ve never heard of it. At first I thought Colin was showing us what she earned as a commission for being a host of this sight and I was so excited for her … lol…. I know….I am an airhead …. I’m happy for her regardless~~~~~!!!!!

    • Eve

Commissary is a Grocery Store :). Collin gr8! job! Don’t forget if your commissary allows this, use those RR’s. They really help cover most of the surcharge. Anyone at DM in Tucson, AZ we have the Challenge Tuscan Butter for only $1.29, use the $2/1 Q and get a .71 overage.

Thx!! Again for all that you do.

    • Susan

The commissary is the grocery store on military installations.

    • Mary K Gruender

a retail store that sells equipment and provisions (usually to military personnel)

    • Molly

The Commissary is for Military Families, retirees and DOD Civillians depending on what their ID allows…

  21. Gracie

    I don’t judge, but I’m sure the cashier’s do!
I bought 8 boxes of U by Kotex Panty Liners at Target on clearance for 1.01 ea. I had (4) $2.50/2 coupons, so basically they were giving them to me free and I was able to apply a $1.92 to something else! At least, that’s how I explain it to my husband.

    allthosethingsilove.com

  22. Cindi

I hadn’t shopped at our commissary in years until I started couponing this past fall and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at some of the good deals to be had there. In the past, I was turned off by their horrible produce and really bad selection overall, but they’ve really diversified in the past couple of years (at least where I am in CO). It’s possible to find Laura’s lean beef there, a few organics in the produce aisle and some awesome scores here and there (just yesterday they had Seattle’s Best Coffee–the new style with the numbers–for just $4.00 a bag!). Plus, they always have piles of coupon fliers by the entryway. Regardless, it’s got me adding the commissary back to my normal grocery rounds during the month!

  23. Brittany

    *sigh*

I miss the commissary:( One of the few things I miss about military life, LOL. Great haul Collin, and awesome tips for those of you who are lucky and get to shop there 🙂

  24. kimberly

i was wondering if you guys were able to use the $3/1 Tide stain release at the commissary. They sell it for $2.93 so free plus a little overage..it has been out for awhile and when i went in the other day they had a couple. I took it to the cashier with my coupons and they beeped sayign it’s not the right size? i have only seen them in the spray one size so wondering if you all had any problems?

    • Ebony

My commsy is ALWAYS out of them : (

  25. Melissa

yeah, also wondering here whatchya gonna do with all that KY ; )…

  26. Mary

Great deals at the commisary! Dollar General allows overage so I used the Gain $3.00 coupon for fabric softener. The price was $2.75 for 60 which I would not have bought without the coupon, but it made them free and the overage went to pay for other items. The cashier said “wow, the coupon was for more than the item!

    • Ebony

Mine doesnt : ( the crazy cashier told me I couldnt even use my coupon because it was for more than the price of the gain, So she said if the gain was $3 and my coupon was $3 then I could have gotten it for free, but since the coupon was MORE than the gain, I couldnt use it AT ALL…. and to make matters worse the man on the next register kept saying “dat would be free, we caint’ do dat”…*aargh* so I just put them back wish we had better “informed” cashiers in this town

  27. Anonymous

9 tubes of KY Jelly! Wow…

  28. Becky

I’m sorry all that KY is having me laughing hard. You all have fun! 😉

    • Collin

Oh… we definitely will! I am gearing up to wax my floors. Plus, I will be well prepared if any gum should get stuck in our kiddos hair! 😀

      • kristen

You can use the $1 off any two Dentyne single packs from the 2/13 SS to get them for 5 cents each at the commissary – then you can put that KY to use 😛

        • Collin

          LOL!! Too funny!

  29. Connie

Thanks Collin, My son is at Camp Lejeune. So, next time I’m down there. We’re going shopping!

  30. Kelly

LOVE LOVE LOVE when you post commissary deals

  31. Robin

I have a ? about shopping at the commissary…….If you are a veteran can you shop there. My husband said in 1968 when he was at war, they didn’t even have Military ID’s.
We live real close to Fort Knox, KY— my house is shaking because they are doing tank rounds right now, I hate when it rains at night

    • Gail

You have to have an ID. If he’s retired military, you should be able to get ID’s.

  32. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Great job! Is it possible to have a commissary tab on your website? It would be great to see great deals for us military families. Thanks for all that you do.

  33. amanda g

    Hey Collin!
I shop at the Commissary pretty often and I have noticed that after getting a good deal with coupons they raise the price on products. I know that they change there prices often but it really seems like its always after I get something for an awesome price. Have you seen this happen at your store?

    • Natasha Luckett

      Hey Amanda,
It depends on when you go. They actually one sales promotions for a 2 week period. So prices can change every 2 weeks. They usually run Thursday-Wednesday over two weeks. See my post below.

    • Ebony

Yeah they change thier price on the 1st and the 16th (usually around our paydays) The sales last a little over 2 weeks which is good in a way that it doesnt change weekly, but it can seem like everytime you go the prices change since they dont use “sale” shelf tags it looks like they are just raising and lowering thier prices. But they have “sales” cycles like other stores.

    • BORN2RUN

yes but they DEFIANTLY do what amanda is talking about……I know when they change the prices but I have paid VERY close attention and I can go in one day and have razors be 3.50 for example and the next day I go back with my coupon and it has magically jumped to 8.50. REALLY! And as soon as my coupons expire the price magically goes back down. I am not the only one who has noticed this because I have a friend and a base 3 states away who has the same issues. We have started to document this as the are only “allowed” to charge i believe 15% more than they pay for the product.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Always! I was getting the dog treats for $1.99 and printed coupons often for $2.00 off. Next time I went back, $2.99. That isn’t the first time, that is just one of the last ones I remember. The price of the tissues, (cannot remember name, but yellow box) went up 20 cents since the last coupon. It isn’t you; the commissary does raise their prices often after a good coupon.

  34. Natasha Luckett

    Hey Everyone,
I’m actually a merchandiser for liquor/wine at the Base liquor store at MacDill in FL. So I’m at the commissary three days a week since it’s next door. Here is a link to the commissary website.
    https://www.commissaries.com/log_in/html/savings_aisle.cfm
You have to have your authorized spouse or your ss,dob, and last name. Once you login you can pick your commissary and they will give you a list of what’s on sale for a 2 week period. The sale right now ends today. It also lets you know how much the item is and how much percentage off it is off the regular commissary price. This site is only for authorized commissary patrons. The nice thing is you can take a quick look of what’s on sale and see if it’s worth the trip. I save the list as a pdf on my computer and then reference it when Collin posts other deals. FYI if you shop your base liquor store especially if it’s Army or Airforce. Ask the cashier what day the truck arrives that’s the day merchandisers usually put out coupons on liquor. You can save lots of money with sale/coupon prices on your liquor. Most promotions run for 30 days. Hope this helps.

      Fantastic!!! Thank you.

    • mel

I’ll have my husband ask what day the truck arrives at the class 6–we sure go through a lot of alcohol here and I’d love to save money on it! My husband sees it as a necessity! He was so excited last summer he got 6 big bottles of rum for $6 at the shopette! They had the bottles for $11 each with a $10 MIR on each bottle, limit 6.

Every time I scroll by this post and it says “you can, too” I think in my head, “No, I can’t” because we’re not military. LOL!

    • Bee

Ha Ha good point. I sort of miss the commissary (lived at Cherry Point for a while and other places) but I’ve found grocery stores to be more competitive than they used to be. Didn’t have many choices in some places I lived.

  36. jareds_butterfly

There have been some awesome Nature Made coupons in the past couple All You magazines and a couple printables which have led to some awesome overage at the commissary. The small bottles of Nature Made Vitamin D have been priced at $1.15 and I’ve had a couple coupons for $3/1 and even $5/1 so a lot of overage! It sure makes the grocery budget stretch farther. 🙂

  37. Becky

Do you get to use coupons up to 6 months after expiration or is that only overseas? I have a friend whose son is Military and would love for them to be able to send my coupons to them to use.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Just overseas bases.

Yay Yay Yay!! So happy to see a Commissary post!!

I have a couple more to add if you dont mind:

Milstone Coffee the small packages are .99 use the $2/1
    (pretty good overage on those)

Country Crock margerine (2pack) on sale for .99 use the .40/1 to make it .49

    Bar S Hot dogs .79 use $1/1 or $1/2

Dont forget about the Borden Cheese (q expires soon) dont have the link anymore but it was a $1/1 PDF coupon and they had the shredded cheese priced at $1.59 and the slices at $1.69 so .59 cent cheese!

Also the Muellers pasta is giving overage, sign up on the website for a new account then verify your account and log back in to print a $1/1 q (you can print as many as you want) the muellers run .83 at my Commissary

And the Emerald Nut 10 oz canisters are .47 I had some old $1/1 q’s not sure from which insert but it was in January.

You can also use the $3/1 Nature Made q on the Vitamin A or Zinc(they are about $1.92 ea) so free + overage on those too.

Trans Ocean Immitation crab meat $1.25 use the $1/1 q from thier website. makes it .25 each

    • BORN2RUN

for the millstone the Q states it must be a bag over 1/2 pound which the small one is not. I was just there tonight and was going to do that to score some overage but when I read the Q it said the bag variety must be over 1/2 pound :0

      • Ebony

hmm, mine didnt have a size restriction at all, Im sorry : (
arent the 1/2 lb bags running about $2?

        • BORN2RUN

well that sucks for me 🙂 lucky you!

  39. Lisa

I can always score FREE cat treats with a $1 off friskies coupon there. I cant use as many cat treats as I get so I donate them to the humane society! I donated 18 bags today~!

    • Heather

Great idea!! Thanks for posting- I will be sure to do this in the future!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Love it! We also donate our free pet food items to the local shelter. We actually gave Christmas presents to our family’s pets this past year. Everyone loved it!

Last time I went to the commissary I had a horrible time with coupons. They actually took my RR which they never have but they wouldn’t take more than one Mueller Pasta coupons or my reach floss coupons that I printed from smartsource. I pointed out that the pin numbers were different but they still wouldnt take it..

    • Ebony

Yeah they changed the wording on the Muellers to one per customer per transaction or something like that. At my commsy they havent stopped me from using more than one so I get like 5 at a time. I try not to go overboard, im sure they have had ppl trying to get like 20 boxes of pasta.

I would just get a box everytime I go, free pasta is free pasta 🙂

  41. christina

Yes, PLEASE keep posting commissary deals!!

  42. jareds_butterfly

Quick question, Collin: What do you consider an appropriate amount to tip your bagger? The frugal mama in me wants to be cheap but I also want to be fair since tips are their only source of payment. I had heard in the past that $0.25/bag is a fair amount. What do you think?

    • Ebony

I always do at least $2, if I have a small order like one bag sometimes i will do $1 but its usually always at least $2. I think thats fair but it really is up to what your comfortable with.

    • Collin

Yes, I usually tip about $2… now if they have a smile on their face and are friendly I may lean toward $4! 🙂

      • jareds_butterfly

Okay, great. That’s about what I tip. And a smile sure does go a long way, doesn’t it?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I typically tip $2-$3 depending on the amount. I don’t usually have more than 6 or so bags. It must be ok because one of the baggers always tries to pick me. We normally talk about her daughter’s shopping trip to Kroger’s and Publix as well and compare our coupon trips. If it is a small order, I sometimes take my own groceries to the car and give them $1 so they can get back in the bagging line faster.

  43. Carol F

My commissary cashier told me last time that she could not take several of my internet coupons because they did not have the scan code in the top right hand corner. They did have all the scan codes at the bottom and Wal-Mart and the grocery stores and CVS, WAGS will take them just fine. It was the Smartsource.com coupons. Any other commissary shoppers ever encounter this from their cashier? I shop at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

    • Ebony

i have heard of people having a hard time with Smart Source Q’s I would contact DeCa and print out the response and show it to them.

Sometimes it just isnt worth arguing but there are quite a bit of smart source q’s that I use at the commissary so thats kind of a big deal for me.

  44. Dianna

Wow, great haul! I wonder what the cashier was thinking when she scanned all that KY? ha ha!! I miss the commisary, my mom still lives near Ft. Knox but we never go anymore.

  45. Roxanne Hickenbottom

That’s a whole lot of lube, Collin sorry I couldn’t resist! LOL

  46. Bee

I hate to be a bummer, but the commissary does not allow actual prices to be posted on a public web site. You are supposed to log into commissary.com in order to see them. Sorry, I just don’t want anyone to get into trouble.

    • Bee

Oh I see where this was discussed on this site before and the liability acknowledged. (In other words, it’s none of my business, LOL)

Just used to seeing percentages only on other sites due to restrictions.

  47. Jenny

That is one HELLAVA of stash of the goo, no judging but oh my!

  48. Mo

Holy processed food. I really hope you have hidden veggies that you aren’t showing 😉

    • Collin

I have some carrots there and don’t the Edwards pies have veggies in them somewhere?! 😉 No, in all seriousness this was not a normal grocery run for me. I used lots of coupons that were about to expire and just tried to find some of the best prices so I could post them for all of you.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

We stock up on the Edwards pies when their coupons are in the paper. It goes great with lunches–pull out a frozen pie and it is yummy by lunch, at least my daughter says so, lol.

  49. Lynda

my commissary will not take any internet coupons so sure puts a dent in the bargain dept…… the cashiers are even very rude about the ones that come in the paper…… so needless to say I don’t shop there very much.

  50. Courtney

I love this! I wish you would do this more. I really miss ur sister’s hip2serve site so much!!
