Wowee! Do I have some news for all of you! It looks like Walmart is stepping up to the plate. They have surprisingly updated their corporate coupon policy in a VERY good way! Here’s my favorite change…

Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.

Can you believe that?! I am so excited about this! I would write more regarding their new coupon policy, but it’s Friday and I’ve got family stuff to do. Stay tuned for a more thorough post next week.

(Thanks for the heads up, Kelsey & Consumer Queen!)

what is that thing with sofdrink cotainer caps? never heard about this stuff before.

    • Andrea

A “winning” soda cap that entitles you to a free bottle.

  2. Amy

WOOT WOOT! That’s very exciting news!! 🙂

  3. Wanda

    Wow!!!!

  4. Ana

Yay! It does seem like Walmart is trying to be more coupon friendly. Do you know what this means? Does it mean no more coupons for free products?

Walmart does not accept the following coupons:

    * Print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase

    • Laura

Yeah, internet printable coupons for a “free” product won’t be accepted, good thing most of the time the free coupons are mailed. But, like the Free Mission Tortilla Chips coupon — they won’t take.

Overall I think the changes are great

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Laura, I think they will take that Mission chips coupon. I don’t know why they wouldn’t. It doesn’t say that it’s “free”, it says 2.99 off a bag of chips. Mission worded their coupon specifically that way because so many stores don’t take “free” coupons. So I wouldn’t count them out yet 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

a coupon for a free product that you can print. those are almost always fake coupons.

    • Ana

Dislike then. But oh well, I’ll just take my Mission coupon elsewhere. lol

      • Miriam

The coupons I’ve received for free items have been in the mail too. The box of free taquitos from Monterey (Facebook last week) are B1G1 so Walmart would take it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

it means that no free internet printables for a free Product isn’t accepted

  5. Lynn

OMGracious!!! Good thing I was sitting down when I read this, I just about passed out!

    • Kavi Ravi

“Like”…wish we had a like button:)

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

lol..I actually was looking for the “Like” button!!

  6. camom2six

Awesome! Thanks for letting us know!

      • Ann

I’ll e-mail you shortly for your mailing address. I’ll drop it in the mail tomorrow.

  8. Debra @ A Frugal Friend

Thanks – this is great news!!!!

  9. Ann

That is good news. Off topic but I’m going through my coupons and I have a $5 Similac coupon expiring 4/30 and a $3 off expiring 5/31. If anyone wants it, respond to this with your e-mail address. I’ll probably throw in some diaper coupons to – no cost, I have plenty of stamps. I just want to see someone with little ones using these.

    • Jaime

I would take diaper coupons!! Luvs are our favorite diapers 😀 Unfortunately though my little guy is on a different formula or I would have jumped on your offer! Lovinmom2be@yahoo.com

      • celticmommie

Is your kiddo on Enfamil? I have 2 $5 off coupons that you can have. If you’d like them, email me: sarahstory81@gmail.com

    • melissa

      Hi Ann,
I would love those similac coupons! My baby boy goes through that stuff so fast.

If they are still avail can you email me at: embee131@gmail.com and Ill give you my adress?

      Thanks,
      Melissa

      • Ann

Sorry, I promised it to love2clip. I’ll keep your e-mail address for any more that I may find though.

  10. MoKeaton

Awesome. I stopped shopping at Walmart months ago, because they refused to take my IP coupons. Woohoo.

I am definitely printing this coupon policy and heading to my Walmart on grocery shopping day. Woot woot!

  11. Alicia

Does anyone think that this may mean Walmart will accept the Sunbelt coupons now? A week ago when I went to Walmart to use the BOGO free coupons for the fruit bars, they refused to accept them.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

It depends on the Walmart. I tried at one Walmart and they wouldn’t take them…then I tried another, and they took them.

    • Laura

I went a couple weeks ago and my walmart took them.

    • Nicole

I never had an issue with them taking them before, but they definitely cannot refuse them now. It states directly in their new coupon policy that they WILL take internet printable BOGO coupons. They just won’t take any that don’t require a purchase.

      • mel

ya know, that doesn’t make any sense b/c in order to use a free coupon, you have to have an item for the coupon to attach to. You ARE purchasing the item, but the coupon is your form of payment.

        • Brianna

          I agree!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I had ten coupons for Sunbelt cereal bars BOGO. The only place around here that even sells them is Walmart. They took them no problem.

  12. Linda S.

I just had some problems last night at Walmart. They would not accept my coupon for free eggbeaters or raviolis 🙁

    • Freebies

that is pretty silly since Walmart is the one who issued the EggBeater coupons!!

      jen

      • Kavi Ravi

        Agree….that’s so silly!

    • Kavi Ravi

@Linda, did you show that the coupon is from them?

      • Linda S.

I had cut the coupon out and not given them the complete postcard.

    • mel

Thats crazy! Its a shiny postcard coupon for cripes sake with your address printed on the other side.

    • Nicole

If it’s a printable, no they won’t take it. If it’s one that was mailed to you, I’d go back with the coupon policy in hand. It only states that they won’t take free item coupons that were printables.

I’ve redeemed multiple free item coupons that were mailed to me without any hassle.

      • Miriam

It’s wild that you need to fight with their policy in hand for a coupon they gave you! I just used Walmart’s free chef boyardee coupon that arrived this week on CVS’s B1G1. 🙂 Thanks Collin!

  13. Donna

LOL! I think I would feel weird about getting change back from a coupon. Even though I do realize that coupons are a form of payment. I’d probably just buy something to catch the overage. Sure is nice to know though, that that we won’t get the excuse of them not being able to take a coupon that is for more than a sale item.

  14. Takako

Awesome. Now I now why they are getting handling my stack up coupons better (just a little but big steps!) without complains or nasty comments. I still really careful every time I go there and make sure I go though with “my cashier” just in case until settle down about this new policy. Thanks for the heads up! 🙂

  15. Niki

Not trying to ruins you’all Friday. But remember Walgreen coupon policy months ago? They said they will adjust coupon value to match the product purchse price and no overage. But till now, cashier is still refuse taking coupon that is over product price. I mean refuse to adjust. Duhhhh…..

    • Jaime

I would try asking for a manager in that situation…often times the cashier does not know that they can change the price. Now once again though…there are some manager’s that will not work with you as a couponer and some that will…so if it is a regular walgreens hopefully they will work with you on that!! 😀 I don’t usually run into trouble…but once again I stick with the same cashiers…if you do run across a cashier that is willing to do that for you then I would suggest asking her when she works next week too so you can be there when she is working 😀 That is what I did and we ended up exchanging numbers and now she calls me when she is on shift each week!

      • mel

When Nivea had the $3 mens coupon and Walgreens had it on sale for $2.99, the manager refused to adj the coupon. I even showed him the ad where it said Look for additional savings in your Sunday paper. He said it was a misprint!!! I said this coupon came out of todays paper, I don’t think its a misprint. I even asked if he could change the price to sell it for $3? Didn’t feel like arguing anymore, so I told him to void it off, I would take my business elsewhere. The next day, I went to the store with the policy, and he still refused!
I avoid that store if possible.

      • LInda P

Back in Jan. the clerk at Walgreen would not adjust a coupon down and I showed her the Walgreen coupon policy. She called the Manager, who looked over the policy (I pointed to the area in the document that indicates they will adjust down a coupon) and her reply was that she wanted to talk with the regional manager. The following week I went back into the same Walgreen and saw the manager on the register. I asked her what the outcome of her conversation with the regional manager. She told me that I did not understand the meaning of the paragraph….that they do not adjust coupon values down.

  16. karen e

Wow! Never heard of getting change back from a coupon! Too cool. I have an awesome clean and coupon friendly Walmart nearby, so I am excited to get to use this! 😉 I am a little bummed that they won’t accept free internet printed Q’s anymore. . .especially since I just got the mission chip coupon.

    • cindy

clean and coupon friendly? WOW! Where do you live? I have yet to come across one like that! 😉

      • karen e

Hehe! I know. We are lucky. It is a fairly new walmart in a suburban area of eastern washington. 🙂

        • Sadie

I’m in Eastern WA too – Which Walmart do you go to?

          • karen e

The one in Richland on Queensgate.

  17. nankatfog

I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart almost a year ago when they told me that I made copies of my coupons because they were not in color. I told the cashier if Wal-Mart would like to pay for the color ink for my printer I would be more than happy to have them in color.
Do they not realize you can copy in color to? Sheesh
So needless to say I probably won’t ever go back to Wal-Mart to shop. Every time I shopped there they always gave me a bad time about my coupons. I just go to the grocery store and enjoy my savings with no aggrivations.

    • cindy

safeway once told me I copied my internet coupons. I tried to calmly explain that the particular coupon allowed me to print it out twice but she wasn’t having any of it. BUT, I just avoid this checker as I get SOOO many great deals at Safeway….

      • nankatfog

I shop at Vons…Same company. Only 1 old man has ever given me a problem. My favorite is the Store Manager. If the coupon beeps he pushes it through and that’s the store manager. It’s almost like a game to him to see how much I save…LOL

        • Erin

I had a manager at an Albertsons do that too! It was a surprising relief 🙂

  18. Kayla

I guess I have been lucky at walmart. I have rarely had issues using coupons that had overage. The register might beep, but it asked if amount on coupon was correct and the cashier would say yes. What I have never understand is why they have an issue with overage. They are getting the $ amount on the coupon plus 8cent handling fee when they send it in for reimbursement.

  19. Kim K.

I just talked to my close family member who is a cashier manager and she had no clue about the change in policy. Like she said, they are always the last to know!!

  20. TheirMomToo

I was at Walmart yesterday, Bought about $200 worth of stuff (after my coupons) and was told my coupons exceeded the limit allowed to use. The cashier had to call a manager to “override” it so I could use all my coupons. Also, On one of the coupons the expiration date was 3/31 and the registered beeped when she scanned it and it said it was expired! Ummm NO!!
It’s a shame that when we have these options to use these coupons (and in my case I usually only buy what I have coupons for) that these store (Have had probs other than Walmart) give shoppers such a hard time. I feel if the coupon scans then its good. A Walmart cashier told me they only take coupons with the green dot on them. Well newsflash… They don’t all have the green dot! LOL Don’t mind me… I get really frustrated when I put all the energy into making out a shopping list, gather and organize my coupons that I still have problems : /

    • Nicole

WalMart has a limit of 45 (or somewhere around there) coupons per transaction.

      • Julieanne28

The new policy says 40 or more coupons WITH Customer Service Supervisor/Management approval.

    • Dani

Usually no big deal if you go over in coupons the CSM just pushes a couple of buttons and tada-good to go. (this is mostly to stop people from using $100 off a playstation) The expiration thing was probably just someone entering the number wrong. I have never heard of a green dot coupon?

      • TheirMomToo

Next time you print out a coupon from Coupon.com, Look on the right side and you’ll see a little green dot. A cashier at Walmart once told me they were told to look for that on internet coupons, I stood my ground though because not all internet coupons have that. She gave in before I did LOL

    • Kiesha

Just because a coupon scans doesn’t mean it is good. Lots of improperly used coupons will go through without a beep, which is why part of a cashier’s job is to visually inspect the coupons.

  21. debra

Not overly excited either. Walmart puts out these corporate policies but the final say goes to the store manager it seems. I have had nothing but issues with Walmart. I believe it is a little coupon envy on the cashiers part but they always hassle me over IP coupons. I take my business to Target, CVS and Walgreens where 9 times out of 10 I am getting the items cheap or free.

  22. Marcia

I just printed a copy to have with me for my next adventure there since often that is what it is, an adventure. I am hoping they share this information with their store managers and don’t make it a suggested policy that the store manager can decide to honor or not. That is often the problem which is why as we all know the YMMV policy we experience differently from one another. My fingers are crossed but my coupon friendly Target across the street will probably remain my go to store.

  23. autum

My walmart was friendly. The coupon didn’t scan for one of the same and the cashier took it, so too were the BOBO nestle quick printed q’s. Glad to hear of the change though. I understand catalinas like walgreens rr or ups etc will not be accepted.

  24. Mollie

Good! I hate the way my local Wal-Mart acts when I present coupons. I have to make the cashier wait until I have loaded my order onto the belt, so I can watch the ring up prices as well as the amounts of the coupons. The other day I had a $3.00 coupon that the cashier negated to scan. I’m going to keep a copy of the coupon policy with me when I shop, and whoop it out when they give me conflicting coupon policies.

    • celticmommie

I tried to get the cashier to wait until I was ready and she refused! She said they’re evaluated on how fast they go so she couldn’t wait. What?! I let it go but it still annoys me. 😉

      • Jennifer

I used to be a cashier at WalMart (during my college years) and cashiers are evaluated on how “quickly” they scan items. I learned that if there is a delay in scanning products for the same shopper, the cashier can hit “total” and then scan more items after that and hit “total” again, etc. Maybe if you mention that to them??? Just a thought!

        • celticmommie

No that’s great! Thank you! That’s why I didn’t really push it…I didn’t want to get the girl in trouble. But next time I have a complicated order, I’ll let the cashier know! 🙂

  25. El

I was at Walmart the other day and tried to use my coupon for Free Planter’s Almonds, but they wouldn’t accept it. They said they’ve been having problems with some couponers and fraud. They did accept my Sunbelt Fruit Bars BOGO and One Free Yoplait cup because it had that silvery band on it that cannot be duplicated. They said that they no longer accept any coupons for Free items, only BOGO’s, at least at my Walmart anyway…

  26. Shannon C

I’m so glad that Walmart put the part in about coupons exceeding the value of the item. I stopped going as much to Walmart after they wouldn’t accept any coupon I brought in that made something free like the pictureka card game at Christmas. Maybe if I print the new policy and take it in too, they will be more willing to take coupons. I had to take the old policy in to get them to take internet coupons at all.

  27. Dawn

Last year I used all my free Oreo coupons (anyone remember those?) and the manager was called over—but since each coupon had it’s own UNIQUE bar code, they were fine with it.

The mission Chips also have their OWN unique number on them, so they won’t be a problem I’m sure. 🙂

  28. tiffany

Thanks so much for this post. This news just made my not so great day, much better!!!!

  29. marie

Nice policy; I wish others did this too. Though, I morally cannot shop at Walmart no matter how good of a deal I can get.

  30. Shirleen

Having a printed copy of the Store Policy does help!! I had problems at Wal-Mart a while back with a cashier not taking a coupon. I went to customer service and showed them my copy of the Store Policy and they took care of me!!=) I thought to myself, “Thanks, Collin, for telling us to print out policies and keep them with us!!!!”=)

  31. Carey b

well it might now say that but that has always been the policy. when I worked there we would have to give change back on coupons that was over but they would tell use to try and make them get some thing so that we would sell more.

  32. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

am i reading it correctly on the new policy that they won’t accept buy one get one free coupons or is that just for a competitor’s b1go sale? the old policy had that they accepted those type of coupons but now I don’t see it.

  33. karen

I have been getting overage at my walmart for a few months and using catalinas. I have never had a major issue at this walmart but when I lived in GA I had a few.

  34. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

    they are accepting catalina’s too!

  35. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I gave up shopping Walmart about a year ago when I had 5 Skintimate coupons and 5 Skintimates and they would only accept one coupon. The manager argued with me that they can only take 1 coupon per item. I argued that I was only using one coupon per item- 5 coupons-5 items. He still refused. I walked out leaving my entire order for them to keep, which included a carseat. If I have to print a coupon policy to keep in my purse for just in case situations then why even bother shopping that store.

  36. April

Whattttttt!! This is amazing!! So many times I have went to checkout and they would not take my coupons because the value exceed the amount of the product. Many times I went home feeling defeated. This is great news!!

  37. mary

Interesting news! I noticed that policy changes also include mfg. catalinas coupns. Will we be able to use Walgreen’s RR’s at Walmart?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

yes I’ve used a WG RR w/o any problem they scan and it goes through without any problems, no need for an override

      • Kavi Ravi

        Thanks for the info!

  38. jmartcougar

really cool I have never had problems with coupons at walmart

  39. randi

the policy states they will take competitor catalinas! yeah!
    “Checkout coupons
(also called “Catalinas”) that are printed
    at our competitors’ registers, have
    “Manufacturer Coupon” with specific
requirements printed on them, a valid
remit address for the manufacturer, valid
expiration date, and a scannable bar code”

  40. Bee

It could be huge if they would accept RR. I know they can’t do ECB, obviously, but the RR are from a manufacturer and have a remit address.

  41. Jude

    Way t’ go, Walmart!! Woo-hoo!

They’ve GOTTA know we’re excited about the new policy!!!! 😀

I got in an “argument” with Customer Service, just last week — they said they didn’t take competitor’s coupons and I boldly said, “Yeh, I’ll bet ya do!!”

    Thanks for posting, Collin.

  42. mary

    oh im so excited

  43. Carlie

My Walmart is very friendly as well. I use the target store coupons and then the manufacturer’s coupons and most of the time the cashiers are happy to do it! Walmart is the place I shop the most now days:) Go Walmart!!!

  44. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

omg i was @ walmart last week, to use a WG RR coupon $4 off and it wouldn’t go through, the cashier override the coupon to $.70 3 times like triple coupons, gave back the coupon so i had to use it wg the next day. I didn’t like the .70 taken off 3 times when I was suppose to get $4.00 off ($2.10 only) . Hopefully they won’t get in trouble for doing that tripling a coupon 3 times

  45. Rebecca

i just went today and had no idea they didn’t take that prior to recently! Glad they changed their policy! I got floss for free but had to pay 7 cents since it was the only item I got!

  46. Christina

I’m really excited about the ‘exceed the price of the item’ part! Now, if only they’d add something about allowing coupons to be used on items other than exactly what’s pictured.

  47. bradleykymom

Just to let you guys know if you have that coupon (which I got from the Wal-Mart website) for a free can of Chef Boyardee, just take it to CVS. I just went to mine today after work and saw that it’s BOGO. I ended up with two of the free coupons. They didn’t even hesitate with it. So I received four FREE cans. And like many of you, that’s why I love shopping at CVS.

  48. Shop Now

Great. Now I can finally use the Wag’s Catalinas… ‘cuz they’re not much of a deal at Wag’s prices, lol

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i know right i’m having a hard time thinking of what to buy walmart has more selections

    • RayAnne

      I have (4) $3 RRs on hand!!! I can’t wait to use them @ WalMart!!! Lol 🙂

  49. RosaliaF

i’m glad i saw this. i will print it out and show my css’s tomorrow. i like to keep myself updated with the policies as an employee and a shopper.

  50. John

This policy is great! Was able to use the other day when I got 4 boxes of the 40 count Gain fabric sheets. They were priced at $1.87 and used the $3.00 off coupon, nice overage on the purchase.
