  6. Kim

Has anyone ever went to one of these? It sounds kinda like they are making more tickets available than there are seats.

We to a pre-screening of The Proposal. We were sure to get there early and it was completely full when the movie started. I think they had to turn people away. Kind of like a first come first served deal.

    • Amanda

I go to free advanced screenings all the time. I never get there later than an hour before and every screening I have ever been to except one has been packed. I’m sure they turn some people away. They will also check to make sure you don’t have a recording device with you.

Do they typically let you in the theater when you get there, or give you a ticket? I’m just wondering if we’ll be sitting in the theater for an hour, or if we can get there, grab a ticket, and have time to grab dinner across the street??

        • Amanda

Well, you have the screening pass that you print out (which is not a guarantee that you will get in). My theatre is two floors. So you line up downstairs and they occasionally let groups of people upstairs. You know you will definitely get a seat in the theatre once you are upstairs. And then there is usually another line upstairs, and they don’t let you into the theatre until a specified time. So at my theatre, you have to be in line and waiting or you won’t get in. Sometimes my friend will arrive ahead of me and she will continue in the lines without me, just so she can get into the theatre and save some good seats. But if I arrived too late, there is a chance I wouldn’t get in and I couldn’t just say “I’m with a friend who’s already in” or anything like that. I usually grab McDonald’s beforehand or you can get concession food once you have saved a seat. Not sure if this is how all theatres do it, however.

Amanda, How do you find out about these advanced screenings? I saw Soul Surfer in advance a few weeks ago through my MIL’s church. I just loved seeing it for free and don’t mind arriving early in order to do so! We got there about an hour early and it was about 1/4 full at that point.

        • Amanda

I live in Boston, so there are lots of advanced screenings here. I follow two promotions companies on Facebook, 43KixBoston and Buzzbo Boston, both of which I think have equivalents in many cities. So they post about screenings on FB and then I pounce on printing out a pass, because they go QUICK! When I was in college, our film department used to get screening passes all the time. Sometimes I will get emails from various things I have signed up for (like Warner Bros. or Entertainment Weekly) giving away passes, and sometimes the newspapers have contests for passes. I think some coffee shops also occasionally get passes, although I don’t get mine there. The last three screenings I’ve gone to I’ve gotten passes from FB.

Bridesmaids is definitely a “Chic-flick!” I work at Wesleyan University and saw it a few weeks ago with my dear husband and hundreds of college students. It was so funny. I’m going to see it again with this pass with my girlfriend. Loved it! I’ve done these passes in the past. You have to go early.

    Got one! Thanks!!

Is anyone else having trouble printing their ticket?

    • Rebecca Z.

I am, mine keeps freezing up. I have to start the taskbar just to close it.

      • Ann

Mine froze up in IE but printed just fine in Chrome.

    • Savingmom

      YES!!!!!!

    • Mallory

I’ve been having that problem too. I’ve tried 3 different computers and IE and Firefox. I tried print preview and it came out to 1800+ pages. That would explain why its freezing up. I took a screen shot and I’m crossing my fingers that will get us in!
