CVS: Huge Price Mistake on Zhu Zhu Deal

Wow! I just want to give you all a quick heads up – CVS made a BIG pricing error in their ad and in-store as I’m sure you can see from the pic above. The Zhu Zhu accessories deal I posted about yesterday is now no longer working. As mentioned yesterday, I assumed the Zhu Zhu toys were on sale 5/$10 (just $2 each)… but now CVS is claiming that was a mistake and they are on sale 50% off – big difference. I apologize if you headed out to get this deal only to realize the prices are a lot higher. 🙁

(Thanks for the pic and heads up, The Frugal Pinoy!)

I was at my local Target yesterday, and saw zhu zhu pets on clearance for $1.25 for anyone looking for them. Great price!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I snagged a few the other day 🙂

    • C Simpson Hall

Yes I was just going to post that they are $1.25 at our Target as well. They had a slew of Kung Zhu (sp?) ones 🙂

    • joeywishtoo

Thanks!!! I don’t have any kids, but my dog loves these. Except when they get caught in his ear. I’ll have to get some for Toys for Tots!

    • RH

was just about to post the same thing!~

    • KayKay

Thanks for the tip, will head to Target and check out zhu zhu pets at $1.25. Have a $5 gift card anyhow.

  2. Roy

I now a manager at a CVS he told me to get what I could get because he felt the price was wrong too. So I got $25 worth at the $2each price. Then used my $5 off $25 email credit and made a really BIG score. Perfect for Christmas donations for the Childrens home or Angel Tree.

    • Roy

      know…oops

  3. gina

    Price match at Walmart.

    • Sheila

Walmart doesn’t price misprinted ad prices of other retailers.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How is Walmart going to know its an error…. Its in the CVS Ad, so they will match it.

        • Anikka

Price matching an ad you know is an error is a dishonest thing to do and gives couponers and other deal seekers a bad name.

          • mythreesons1967

wasnt aware the ad was wrong until now. I got mine this morning at walmart before this came out that the ad had printed wrong.

          • jodicullimore

I full heartedly Agree. Thank you Anikka!

        • mythreesons1967

they matched it for me today with no problems I got several at walmart they have a huge selection

        • jodicullimore

Yea, but now You know that it was an error! Those that got the deal when it first came out…great! No dishonesty. But now that is Not the price, so how can you still match it and feel ok about that? Wow…

          • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

who cares? Walmart will price match as advertised. If this is incorrect, CVS could be sued, and the party would win.

            • Rachael

Which is exactly why its getting harder and harder to find decent prices on ANYTHING because companies are having to pay more to protect themselves from self entitled GREEDY people.

    • jodicullimore

Are you serious!!? Gee… That isn’t dishonest or anything…

      • sarah

GEEZ PEOPLE CHILL THEY ARE PLASTIC RODENTS ITS NOT THAT SERIOUS

        • dimie d

thank you sarah! i was having a good laugh though. coupons/rodents make you go gaga sometimes..read exhibit A above me…..:)

          • Vic

            Agree Sarah!

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Ha! Ha! What people will do for a deal – even if its something they’ll never even use! 🙂

        • Cina

          LOL! drama!

These darn things cost me a fortune at Christmas when they first came out and my son played with them for 2 minutes.

        • Stevie Nanstad

It is serious though..it goes beyond Zhu Zhu Pets..it is about being an honest human being. And when these people PURPOSELY cheat the system..we ALL pay for it sooner or later.

          • Alea

Amen!!! It’s the principle of the matter!!!!

          • Steph

            Agreed!

          • Krystal

Absolutely! Glad there are some honest people out there still!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

If Walmart will let me price match in the morning I will be doing so. Not my problem CVS printed an ad wrong…

      • Kristen

The walmart policy says they will not match misprint ads. So if you match it you are going against Walmart policy. The fact that you don’t have a problem cheating the system is what is sad.

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Walmart would have to prove the ad was misprinted 1st. Judge me I dont care. I am going to try it and see what happens, it it works than yay me… If it dont then oh well on to the next deal….

          • Kristen

I would think it should be a matter of integrity, but if you’re so determined to lie to get a deal go for it. It will hurt us all in the long run. I will stay home and continue to respect myself for doing the right thing.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Things like that are what screws up good coupon policies.

      • Nicki

That is beyond RUDE, If you are aware of a mistake which is only human grow up and realize you shouldn’t act like a little kids that just NEEDS these little toys that bad your willing to lie.

      • Renee

        Must be a Jersey thing….

        • michelle

EXCUSE ME? Seriously? “A Jersey thing?” That is so rude to assume that all people from Jersey would all do something like that.

          • andrea

I don’t really understand why people get so worked up. I personally don’t see anything wrong with price matching the ad at Walmart. I don’t care for these Zhu Zhu things anyway, but to say that person is dishonest is not right. What about the people that did buy them at $2 at CVS how do you feel now that you know that was an error? If you want to do the RIGHT thing then maybe you should return it since it was a big ERROR on their part. What I’m trying to say is people took advantage of the mistake in CVS even if you didn’t know at the time it was wrong, now you do! So why not let others who probably couldn’t take advantage of it in the beginning of the week do it as well. Can’t we all just get along? =)

            • Renee'

It is dishonest because CVS made a mistake. Everyone does…even the people who write the ads. If you got lucky and got a break because of their mistake, then good for you. But if they stand up and correct the mistake, why are customers going out of their way to hurt different stores and the Zhu Zhu company by knowingly price matching an ad that should never have been printed?!! Price matching when you think the ad is legit is fine, but when you know it was a mistake then get over it and do the right thing! We are always talking about how couponing extremists are ruining it for everyone. Saying that you are getting the deal even if CVS got sued…seriously there is more wrong with that than words can say!

          • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Michelle I have to love your comment about it being a Jersey thing… I was born and raised in Jersey and I now live in Missouri but miss every minute of living in NJ….

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

          SERIOUSLY??

  4. Stephanie

I was just at my local CVS store a few hours ago and they clearly had the sale still going on, so you might be able to still get them?!?! Good luck to anyone that wants this deal!!!!

  5. Robin

I went to cvs about an hour ago. Got 11 zhu zhu items for $2 each. Along with pantene and 4 revlon products, my receipt says I save $169!!

  6. Maureen Carlson

it is nice to see they are polite about it and put up a sign and not arguing w/ the customer about it

  7. Cory

I bought 2 Zhu Zhu items yesterday at the $2 price. No one said anything.

  8. Stef

I went today, glad I did now. They were still marked 5/$10, had some issues at the register bc they rang up more. The display was right there so the cashier didn’t question fixing it. I feel bad now 🙁

    • joeywishtoo

Don’t feel bad! You didn’t know at the time. Glad you were able to get a good deal on them!

    • JhsDCL

I went today. But unlike Stef, a manager was called in. The sign clearly said 5/$10. The accessories rung up at 50%. But the sign CLEARLY said 5/$10 on FUN HOUSE, SALON, etc. Sign also said REG $24.99 NOW 5/$10. I actually had to pull sign off display to show the cashier. She still called in manager who said without hesitation it was OK – ring at 5/$10. That’s what the sign said!

No one should feel bad, it was advertised in the stores at 5/$10. It was their mistake – not ours.

  9. Tomoko

My daugter and I just came back from my CVS and my girl was very disappointed to see the sign.
My CVS said all Zhu Zhu toys are 50% off (even Zhu Zhu pets). 🙁
Thanks Carolyn, I will check on Target to see if I can find the zhu zhu pets on clearance.

  10. Wendy

I am so glad I went ahead & got these when the sale started! 🙂

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

that’s crazy…they were clearly marked 5/$10 at my store. I really wasn’t even that surprised when I saw that price because I have seen tons of the Kung Zhu stuff on really cheap clearance at Target. oh well, we have more zhu zhu pets at my house than we really need anyway.

  12. Jen P

My CVS still had them marked 5/$10. It rang up higher but she gave me the $2 price. I only wanted the carrying case. Wow big mistake on their part!

  13. Renee

This may be one of those things that store management can go against or not go against. If people are still interested, I’d start calling stores because I heard of at least one in my area that is still honoring the deal as of this afternoon.

I got lucky on Sunday – I didn’t even look at the ad and ran in for some bottled water when the cashier told me about the deal – so I ended up with $118 worth of ZhuZhu crap for $10. A few things came in handy when I had sick kids today stuck inside the house!

  14. nicole walker

I saw them at Target cheap also. End caps where the toys are

  15. tammy

I just went to 2 different ones to get the deal !!!! 🙂 All the tags say ALL Zhu Zhu pet and accessories are 5 fr $10

  16. nicole a.

They had them at my CVS yesterday. I guess I better go get some.

  17. kelly carter

I was at my cvs today @ 1:00pm and the manager asked me if I had any kiddos into these & said that he had them at $2.00 each so this maybe a deal that is up to the manager of each store as to take the sale price as is.

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Just drove by a CVS about 5 minutes ago and on the marquee it stated “All Zhu Zhu $2.00”. Maybe it’s up to the manager?

  19. Tammi

I went today and all the tags were still up so they just price modified everything to $2. The manager was really nice about it so I didn’t think much of it.

  20. Mel

Went today after a successful $2 CVS trip on Sunday, but another CVS I went to did not have the $2 accessories, only the pets rang up. They said it was up to each manager. Going to try a different CVS to get different parts / tunnels. Only picked up a couple more pets at $2. The local Target did not have them marked down more than 15% and mainly the selection was of the battle zhu-zhu’s.

  21. Nicole

i got two of them yesterday!! gonna try to grab a few more today. wish me luck..lol

  22. nique

I just visited CVS about an hour ago and the sale clerk rang the pets for my son at the $2 price. They still have them advertised at the 5/$10.

  23. ladyfritzler

Darn! I was gonna get my kitties some of these. This is just one more very good reason why English grammar is so important. 5/$10 vs. 50% off neither looks nor sounds the same. A “typo” like that shouldn’t have been redacted, especially since it was advertised as such in the ads. I wonder though, does Walmart still do that price match thing? I bet a few people could get lucky by showing that ad there… ???

  24. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I saw a ton of ZhuZhu pets clearanced at target for $1.25-$2, so definitely check it out if you are looking for some…we have more than we need already!

  25. shannon

I went this afternoon & they rang up for $10 & I went back in & got the sale price. Glad I went back before the put out the signs.

  26. Becca

Went this morning to CVS and the only thing that rang up for $2 was the actual Zhu-Zhu pet. I was disappointed and only bought that. On my way out the door I grabbed a flier just to look and sure enough it said all accesories also.
Usually I wouldn’t go back or argue, I would just let it go but I went in and showed the manager and he adjusted as many as I wanted. I ended up with 10 sets of tunnels and things for $20. Oh yeah, it says I saved $169.
My little one will have a great birthday with all of this stuff. Thanks for all you do!!!!

    • Jamie S.

      good for you 😉

  27. andrea

was going to post about this!! i went yesterday and got 10 items for 20.00 Went to a different cvs tonight and they refused to honor the ad..i said um..i did it twice last night showed the reciept and all manager wouldnt honor it:( oh well i still stocked up for Christmas..and let my kiddos open 2 sets today…they played for hours!!!!!

  28. toni

i just price checked them and they are still $2 here … no signs up either. Does that make me a bad person for buying them and knowing about this post?

    • Carol_R

I’m wondering if it really was a misprint in the ad or that some store managers just decided that in their opinion the price was too low and put out that sign. I would think that their registers would be synchronized with their corporate offices on pricing.

      • Krystal

The managers themselves are not controlling the sale. It is done through corporate. I believe it was a regional deal with some areas still allowing the $2 each, and some not…not 100% sure on that, thought I heard that somewhere. What do the store managers care what the price is, it’s not coming out of their pocket, it’s CVS’s pockets…and most stores had so many of these things anyway I’m sure they’re glad to get rid of them!

        • toni

I ended up going back tonight, bought 3 of them… all rang up $2 each, he said you know 10 minutes ago we got an email that it was a price mistake … so if you want anymore you better grab them before the pricing changes. This was a manager 🙂 I said no thank you this is all I need 🙂

  29. Carol_R

They only had 1 of the Zu Zu pet accessories at 1 of the 2 CVS stores I went to on Sunday and they had a lot of that 1. I scanned it at the Magic coupon machine & it scanned as being on sale for 5/$10 at that time so it wasn’t just a misprint in their ad. They set prices attached to those bar codes to the sale price of 5/$10.

  30. diana

I got six of them for $2 each. There was a sign taped on them that said 5 for $10, so the manager honored the prices. I got on walmart.com and some of the ones I got sell for over $16.00 each. By the way, I didn’t MAKE him honor the price, he just did it. And I paid for these with ECBs.

  31. Kim

I’m a single and unemployed mom of two boys, so even at $2 a piece, I’m not going to buy them at any cost. I’m better off continuing to pay my mortgage payments (granted its under water), pay our utilities on time and buying groceries each week. I know my priorities are straight and I’m trying to teach my kids what’s really important in life. I’m fearful that unemployment benefits will be cut any day now and I’m trying to prepare for what comes next when I still can’t find a job. You ladies count your blessings if all you have to worry about is trying to get those $2 Zhu Zhu pet toys.

    • Laura

I’m sorry you are having a hard time, but please don’t take it out on everyone else… Don’t read the comments if they bother you, you are reading comments under a post about the zhu zhu pets

      • Steph

I believe her intent was to remind us that spending $ on anything that isn’t an absolute necessity, regardless of how good the deal is, is still spending $ that could probably go somewhere better. As far as why she’s reading these posts–who knows? Why am I reading these posts?

    • Lpmousse

      God bless you, Kim.

      • Kim

Thank you and God bless you too Lpmousse! I need more people like you in my life.

    • J

Amen. Good luck to you and your boys.

    • Renee'

I too have most of the same problems you have, but with three children and two serious health problems as well. The thing is, we all have our stories. I agree that Zhu, Zhu pets are not anything to worry about, but at the same time, I am not able to give my children “new” toys very often. Getting the chance to pay $6 and give them each such a great toy and watch them play together for hours…well, it was more important than anything else yesterday. Not to mention that I bought two more so that my kids may be able to bring a gift with them to one of their friend’s birthday parties. It makes them feel good to be able to give too. I was very excited about this CVS deal and would have been disappointed to miss it. And I count my blessings every single day!

    • Pinky

Kim, I’ve been there this past fall. Where 1.00 spent on something silly meant no 1.00 for a loaf of bread. It will get better, just keep your priorities they way you have been and eventually you will come out ahead and then maybe even afford to splurge here and there. Couponing really saved me this past fall and winter. Collin’s site was a huge help. Just keep up with those food deals she tells us about and it will be okay : )

  32. courtney

Glad I got some yesterday. I got the $27.99 accessories for only $2 u cant beat that.

  33. Melissa

It still amazes me that at $2.00 or $3.00 or whatever…. people were paying $50 Plus $ on e-bay a year and a half ago for their kids for Christmas! CRAZY!

  34. Ashley

Wow. I am really ashamed recently to call myself a “couponer”. I see more and more people buying stuff they do not need. The Hip2Save community is about being hip & frugal and GIVING BACK to your community. Please do not use dishonest practices and price match an ad that CVS has corrected. More and more I am ashamed of how greedy people can be. I am with Kim, I will just keep buying what I need and saving what I have. Pretty soon these people are going to ruin it for us all though.

    • Alea

Completely agreed!!! Besides the greed and dishonesty, it also reminds of one of Collin’s videos where she mentions if you are spending 10% on something you don’t need or use – you aren’t saving at all (something along those lines). My kids have NO interest in Zhu ZHu pets and none of their friends do either – it was a fad toy, and most kids lose interest in fad toys quickly (I saw one comment where someone said they paid full price when they first came out and their kid lost interest after two minutes). I’m not surprised so many stores have and or clearanced / greatly discounted them.

      • korrie

I agree! I can’t believe people would intentionally go to a store to have an item priced matched when they clearly know it’s a mistake. I live in Michigan and stores are spending endless time at the registers pouring over coupons and refusing to take alot of internet coupons now because people are copying them or trying to get a deal that’s not legit.
Collin- thanks for taking the time to do the right thing and notify people of this mistake!

    • Steph

      Well said.

    • Agnes

I have to agree with you, Im afraid I will see a youtube vid soon with a stockpile of Zu Zu Pets someone got because it was a great deal, not because they have kids and they need it.
One video bothers me until today when woman said she had 15 or 50 (didnt understand clearly her accent) FINISh dish washer tabs, she doesn’t even have a dishwasher but she got it because she had coupons and it was free!
I was So frustrated because I remember that deal at Wags and I didn’t even manage to get 1 (ONE) box of those because shelves were cleared in all 4 Wags and they didn’t restock.
I have a dishwasher and I really needed to buy some.
Things like that UPSET me(to say it nicely) SO MUCH!!
Most of us struggle $$ these days and I have to count every dollar I spend! If I don’t need it I do not buy it -even if it’s free , there are people who may need it more than I do!

  35. Renee'

If you check Amazon, these exact toys are being sold for less than $4 and they all ship from Target. The people who write the ads make mistakes sometimes. I did get lucky and hit this sale, but if you missed it Target or Amazon is the next best place to hit. I would still call $4 for a $25 set a steal:)

  36. Sarah

I’m a single parent unemployed and the place im renting from is in foreclosure and im being booted aug 1st (only 3 days after my child’s birthday). EVERYONE has issues and misfortune and I think to come here to ‘complain’ and throw your own pitty party while putting others down is inappropriate. MANY of these people have bought these zhu zhu pets to store away for toys for tots among other things.

    • Renee'

Thank you. I agree completely. Like I said earlier…we all have our issues, but this deal was incredible for me. In the middle of a complete financial nightmare it was awesome to see my kids so happy with something Mommy bought them. We rely on charity so much and it is not a good feeling. Plus, like you said giving back is important. Giving my oldest girls a toy to take to a friend’s birthday party made them so happy. It makes them feel less singled out and that giving feels good. We buy Dollar Tree toys and they each donate them for Christmas. Each $1 matters to me, but there are a few times when spending it on those “nonessentials” can be important too. Do what is right for you, as long as it is moral and pray that you make good decisions. Because no matter what, you can’t control others!

  37. Amy

Wow! Glad I got mine yesterday. My kids love Zhu Zhu pets. I bought 5 playsets for $10. My reciept said I saved $93. There was no sign at my store so I used the magic coupon machine to price check and it said 5 for $10 so there is no way it could have been a misprint in the ad or else why would they load the barcode into the system like that?

  38. Amani S.

All the Zhu Zhu Pets and accessories were on a table up front in my CVS for $2 each. I am in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Too bad I don’t know anyone interested in buying one.

  39. jenniferlee_12

I didn’t know the magic coupon machine did price checks too!!! Thanks for the info. Now I won’t bother the cashiers.

  40. Kathryn

Toys for Tots at Christmas is one suggestion, or Angel Trees, etc. – Some kids don’t get any presents for Christmas, so if you are feeling like you HAVE to buy these because they are CHEAP – donate them! just sayin’

  41. MissyLiz

I am a CVS store manager. I was excited to see the ad list everything zhu zhu as being 5/$10 (personally I am tired of looking at the stupid things and having to keep moving them from one season to another, like others have mentioned, it was a fad toy and the fad is done). I think that this was supposed to the same 5/$10 sale on the pets and 50% off the accessories that we had about 4 weeks ago. Somewhere it got messed up and everything got listed in the ad and in the sales database as being 5/$10. Once they noticed, corp “fixed” it and gave us directions to print the sign that Collin has a picture of. My guess is that most managers will honor the 5/$10 price since it is listed in the circular for customer service reasons or just because we really want to get rid of the zhu zhus. (or at least I do!!)

  42. sarah

IF ONLY THESE RODENTS KNEW ALL THE DRAMA THEY ARE CAUSING

    • Emily

      LOL!

  43. MEGAN

I GOT SOME BUT NOW I FEEL BAD ABOUT IT I THEY ASKED I WOULD SO TAKE THEN BACK FOR MY MONEY BACK THAT WHY THE DIDNT LOSE OUT

  44. Agnes

I guess in 2013 any child who will get ZUZU pet for Christmas will stop loving Santa forever! and will be ashamed to admit at school what they got for Christmas:)

    • Erin

I didn’t understand everyone running out to buy tons for their gift stash, either. It was a fad that’s now over, and very few kids will be excited to receive dated toys. Not to say that it wouldn’t be a good lesson in gratitude, but it seems silly for the adults to be more excited than the kids who will be receiving them.

On the other hand, I’m shocked that it was a misprint–it seems like everyone is trying to get rid of these. With all the blog coverage (and now angst) CVS would probably be wise to charge $2 a pop. They’d clear out their stock in no time.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I completely agree. My daughter does not have a huge amt of these, but she has enough…she hardly ever plays with them. Actually she NEVER plays with them, so I will not be getting more for any future holidays. I too have seen them just as cheap on clearance at other places because they just really are not as popular anymore.

      • Krystal

Even if it’s a fad toy, my kids still like them and play with them, and other kids out there would love any kind of toy because they have none at all. A toy is a toy, and if it makes a kid feel anything positive by receiving the toy, then it’s all worth it.

  45. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Im glad I got them when I did. But now the 2 stores near me are sold out. My 3 yr old loves them and they may have been a fad toy but hes so behind on that stuff. Which is awesome for me so I can get these sales. I remember last xmas I spent 20 bucks on that stupid zhu zhu ice cream parlor, to now see all that stuff at 2 bucks just makes me feel sick to have paid that, haha. So he will certainly have enough zhu zhu items for xmas this yr and i got a few for his lil girlfriends bdays. Im ecstatic but feel kinda bad too being a misprint. Although the clerks were all excited about the sale too and said they had been there since last xmas, maybe they do wanna push the sale to get them outa sight?

  46. amy

I was very disappointed yesterday 🙁 Wanted them for treasure box items at school.

  47. saveamymoney

WOW! So very disappointed yesterday 🙁

  48. Ellen H

I got 8 toys on Monday night for $16 and got another 4 yesterday. Yesterday they rang up at half price and not 5/$10, but I just showed the cashier the ad and she changed it without issue. Glad I went early in the week and got to take advantage of the deal. Being a one income household, it is tough to buy my toddler everything we’d like to. We have found Christmas shopping throughout the year and taking advantage when we see good deals like this Zhu Zhu deal, and when Target toys go to 75% off, make us feel like we are giving our son what we normally couldn’t afford. This deal made my week and hopefully will make my son’s Christmas morning!

  49. Kelly

I bought 5 yesterday evening and the 5 for $10 signs were still up. They rang up $10 each, but the cashier marked them down to $2 each and I didn’t ask her to she just automatically did it. Didn’t realize it was a price mistake til just now. I bought the $1.25 Zhu Zhu pets from Target to go with these, so have awesome gifts for the gift closet that cost $3.25 a set.
