Just a quick question for all of you shoppers out there — This is the first year I have really put my mind to finding great deals. Due to this, I started Christmas shopping months ago! I’ve already covered about half of my gift list, but I am wondering if you all set a budget for yourselves each week? Or how you decide to say “No, I’m going to pass on this deal.” This week alone I’ve already spent about $50, and would really really love to do some VS shoppin’
    Thanks!

I tend to decide “I can spend $X on this person” for each person on my list. Then, when I come across something they would like and within price range, I buy it if I can afford to buy it at that time. I’ve had to pass on a few “great deals” that I know would have been nice gifts but I just didn’t have the extra money right then. But it really does just come down to that, for me anyway. I’ll spend $200 on gifts in a week if I have the $200 to spend and I get some good deals on things that they will enjoy, I don’t set a “limit” to my spending as far as weekly, monthly, etc. and just go by how much I have to spend at that particular time. (Which tends to vary wildly for me, I do some part time bartending so if I occasionally have a great night I’ll have an extra $200, if I have a bad night it just pays for my gas to get there so there’s no extra to spend! lol)

Thank you! I try to budget because if I don’t my husband and I get way too carried away 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I do set a budget each week for my spending. Every week is different though, it just depends on how much extra we have. I will only take that set amount of cash with me shopping so I will not go over my budget. I include all spending in my budget, this includes groceries, and coupon trips or deals, buying clothes, ect. Groceries are first so that way if I spend more at the grocery store I know I cant go get as many deals 🙂
As far as Christmas goes my husband and I sit down with paper and pen and list each person we are buying presents for and the amount we are going to spend next to each name. I leave some spaces below each name so I can write down what gift I buy them and how much it cost so I can keep track. I DO NOT go over that amount that we have set and usually try to stay under that amount by scoring really good deals. I have found that you really have to set your own system and what works for you and your family. Sit down with your hubby/partner and discuss your weekly budget together and come up with a solution. Also I have passed up really awesome deals because it did not fit into my budget at that time. It is really hard to say no but I promise you that deal will most likely come around again at some point or another! Good luck!!

      • Dorinne

I also keep track of what I buy as I cross names off the list 🙂

One of the other little things I do, say I had $20 budgeted for someone but find a great gift on sale for $10. That extra $10 I’d planned to spend moves into the “overage” column. If I spend $50 less than I planned, then I can buy something extra (usually a new video game for my boyfriend 😉 but if I don’t “save” any money, I don’t buy anything extra.

Heads up! VS clothing is very poor quality. The pictures are deceiving-the fabric is very thin and they do not launder well. I once purchased several items and only one made it past one season.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I beg to differ with your opinion. But I do think it depends on what you buy. I have bought many items from VS in the past few years. All of them lasting till now.

Their summer clothing line is thinner, VS fabric is appropriate for the season. Also I believe VS has some of the softest clothing I have ever bought, which is why I continue to buy VS clothing.

    • Dorinne

I’ve had wildly mixed results with everything from VS from clothing to shoes to lingerie. A few things I’ve had for more years than I want to admit and they still look new. Others have fallen apart on me within the first few wearings. I think it really depends on who actually manufactured the particular item. They don’t have one central factory that makes everything, they even carry things that aren’t “VS” branded.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have mixed feelings too about VS! No problems with the lingerie usually but I have bought several sweaters from them and have had a lot of problems with them like holes forming in the neck (turtle necks) after wearing them once, I actually think it arrived that way but I didn’t notice. Also after washing them the treads would start to come lose. Not sure if I will buy any more sweaters from VS!

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

** threads ** LOL not treads

    • esther

I wasn’t impressed with the quality either.

    • Becky

Agreed. I’ve been very disappointed with their clothing quality, especially sweaters. They do not hold up well in the wash at all – shrink, change shape, weird stretchiness, loose threads. Maybe if you can handwash or dryclean, they’d be okay, but not for regular usage. Honestly, it reminded me of Walmart clothing.

  4. Melody

Tried to buy a sweater, but free shipping code not working for me.

  5. carmel

this code is not valid for clearance item

  6. Diana

Yes, VS has gotten more and more picky with their codes.
@ Amanada, I would recommend waiting to shop VS around Christmas, they have better deals. And their big sales are Jan and June when they clearance a lot of stuff.

  7. Carol

I got an email yesterday and I called them and they said the code wasn’t valid on Clearance. Shame………

  8. Tiffany

I have a question for ya! If I buy the clothes, do they magically make me look like that model?? LOL….:P

  9. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Bad news: if you sign up for VS catalogs, they will sometimes sell your information to other companies. I kept getting annoying catalogs from places I have never shopped at, and I finally traced it back to VS. After hassling them to get my name off these lists, they gave me a $15 off egift card for the hassle, so there was some good news in the end! Plus, they send out $10 off coupons during your birthday month to subscribers. My birthday was this month, so I combined my $15 off and my $10 off to get a $25 bathrobe for only the cost of shipping! Plus, there was a promo to get $10 off your next purchase when you made a $10 or more purchase at the time. So I turned around and used the $10 off to get a $25 pair of comfy slippers for only $15 plus shipping. So $15+ 2 shipping costs for a matching set of comfy robe and slippers from VS. It was my birthday gift to ME! 🙂 I think the hassle of calling to get my name removed from all those catalog lists was worth it, in the end.
