Keep in mind – Staples Easy Rebates are just that, easy! Go on over here to read more about them. Basically you’ll be able to submit all your info online. You won’t even have to mail anything in– the best part in my opinion! You’ll receive your rebate/rebates within 4-6 weeks after submitting them.

Staples Rewards are pretty easy as well! Rewards members earn 10% back in Staples Rewards on all ink & toner purchases, 10% back in Staples Rewards on all case & ream paper purchases, and 10% back in Staples Rewards on all Copy & Print purchases. Staples Rewards are issued monthly when the value of the Reward is at least $10. Monthly balances of less than $10 will roll over each month until the minimum is met for that calendar quarter. If the $10 minimum for the quarter has not been met, the balance will expire at the end of the quarter. Rewards and Recycling Rewards are redeemable for most merchandise in Staples stores, online at www.Staples.com or by phone at 1-800-333-3330 but cannot be redeemed for or applied against taxes, cash, credit remittance, delivery charges, custom printing orders placed online, promotional products, Staples gift cards, third party gift cards, prepaid phone cards, postage stamps, prior purchases, Staples Industrialsm purchases or any purchases made on other provider Web sites.

Can someone please tell me how an easy rebate works? TiA

    • guest24

Mary, Since I am really upset, I would LOVE to tell you (My Version). I turned in 3 HP empty cartridges. I received $30 in REWARDS. When the rewards came in, they let me order a new HP black ink cartridge, for $17.98. Then they gave me a register receipt for $12.02. HERE’S THE CATCH…… You have to spend it on a one time purchase. Pooey…….. I thought when you had a reward “bank”, you could buy (for example-the $3 envelopes-yesterday then go back today and spend $3 or$4. BUT NO,,,,,,, I have to spend the whole $12….. I don’t like it. I’m getting out. Remember…. This is just “my opinion”…….They do give you 2 months to “spend” the rewards, which is good. I have until 2/28. I just “wanted” those envelopes. But, not to lose $9 to get them.

      • Mister Cheap

Mary, Do not be upset. There is no reason to “lose” rewards in the future.

Yes, you do have to spend your rewards check in one shot (or, get one “balance” coupon to use on the remainder).

However, the safest way to use rewards is this:

Apply the check to free after rebate items (NOT FREE AFTER REWARDS items). You qualify for the full rebate which can be a bank check or PrePaid Visa, etc. You are basically monetizing your rewards check back in to cash.

Here’s an example of how you could spend a $20 rewards check all in one shot w/this weeks sales and not have to worry:

        Charmin Basic 16ct Packs buy 2 @ $12 ($6ea)
One Pack of Staples 4×6 Photo Paper $9.99 less $9.99 easy rebate

total will be $21.99 plus any tax

Pay with $20 rewards check = $1.99 left

use $1/2 Charmin Coupon from P&G save = .99 left

Pay out of pocket approx $1, submit for $9.99 rebate and get it via check or Paypal.

Now you’ll have 32 rolls of toilet paper plus be getting back a check for $9.99! and no rewards left to worry about.

        • guest24

WOW, Thanks for the tip….. I knew I just didn’t understand how this worked. Sure makes a difference when someone spends the time to describe it. Thanks bunches. I will take your advise and be a “happier” camper tomorrow.

        • guest24

I just returned home from Staples. I did what you said. I got 2 “bundles” of the Paper Towels. Each “bundle will be a great gift……. And they were free. Thanks again sooooo much. You are my HERO.

      • Christie

You have up to 2 purchases to use rewards. HOWEVER…DO NOT USE REWARDS on fure rewards purchases as they DO NOT ROLL!!!!

Hope this is helpful to you! 🙂

        • Sharon H

          Christie,
What do you mean by the rewards do not roll. Does this mean I cannot use my rewards to purchase something that has a reward too?

          • Christie

yes…you CANNOT receive rewards on purchases that you paid for with rewards….sneaky huh?

However…You can use them to buy rebate item and will receive a rebate check though.

            • Mister Cheap

Not sneaky at all. They are very clear about this in their print ads.

    • Nicole

I have never received any of the rewards I should have.. so I do not do Staples Rewards 🙁 I bought an entire case of printer paper that I didn’t need.. was supposed to get money back for it in Staples Rewards and I received nothing.. so I don’t do it.

      • Christie

They use to mail them…Now they email you and prompt you to the wesbite for you to print rewards! I scored a kindle fire regularly $199.00 for $4! WAHOOOO! 🙂

      • Mister Cheap

        Nicole,

If you never received the rewards, there is no deadline on returning a case of paper (assuming it’s unopened/not used) for a FULL REFUND to Staples. Even if you bought the paper back in Oct 2011, and you have the receipt, you can return it now and get your money back if for some reason there was a mix up with your rewards payout.

As a reminder, you should ALWAYS give your staples rewards number at checkout and make sure your rewards account number appears at the top of the receipt before you leave the store.

  2. stariath

For any participating Easy Rebate item that you purchase, a form will print out on the receipt. You can either mail the form, or submit it through Staples online (my favorite). You don’t have to mail UPC codes or anything…your receipt info serves as proof of purchase. And if you submit the rebate online, no need to mail a receipt. I have done all of my Easy Rebates online and received my money via Paypal, but you can choose other methods of payment.

    • rachel

It is the best rebate program. I always get my checks and never a hassle.

      • guest24

What checks? I was never offered a “check”…… see my comment above to Mary.

        • Kara

Guest 24 – Staples Easy Rebates and Staples Rewards are 2 different programs. Easy Rebates are checks that are mailed to you (USPS). Rewards are in store credit, just like you received once before. Hope this helps clear things up for ya! 🙂

        • Mister Cheap

As you go through the rebate submission process, one of the screen shows you your rebate choices. Typically, it is defaulted to the PrePaid Visa card, however, you can change your choice to rebate check or Staples Gift Card (or, if the rebate is less than $10.00, you can also choose to get it via Paypal).

If you don’t change it, it will give you the default option, so be sure to look for that screen as you go through the pages of the rebate screens. Once you submit it, YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR CHOICE! so choose wisely.

          • guest24

You and Janette are just AWESOME to explain the differences to me. I think I was using the Rebates/rewards interchangably. My Goof. I learned more from you guys than (being in shock) at Staples yesterday. Another suggestion the Staples guy said, was to “buy something”……. then bring it back for a refund. That sounded confusing to me, but it WAS an option. Thanks again for all the GREAT input. <3

        • Janette Sanders

Guest24 there is a difference between Easy Rebates and Staple Rewards. The Easy Rebates you get the money back like a mail in rebate with the Staple Rewards you can only use at Staples and with restrictions. I’ve never used Staple Rewards but the Easy Rebates are just that very easy to submit online and receive.

          • Mister Cheap

            Hello Janette,

I’ve been using Staples Rewards for years. It’s an excellent program in my opinion.

Rewards are now distributed online, and are available monthly, as long as you have enough rewards in your account to earn a check ($10min in rewards usually).

After logging in (rewards are typically available the middle of each month, usually NO LATER than the 20th of the month at http://www.staplesrewards.com )

You can then print out the physical rewards check to take/use at the store. You can also “shop” with your rewards check online at http://www.staples.com There is free shipping on orders over $50 (sometimes less of a minimum if there’s a promotion), so if you had $50 in rewards to spend, you could actually order paper towels, toilet paper, free after rebate items that are online, etc and have it shipped to your home, using the rewards to pay for them. If there’s any additional money owed which the rewards doesn’t cover, you can pay by credit card online. ONE IMPORTANT CAVIAT–online you must spend the ENTIRE rewards check in one full amount. You do not receive credit back for partial use unless it’s a Staples issue like an item going on backorder and the item gets cancelled.

At the store, you can use the rewards checks on most items (only main exclusions are gift cards, postage stamps, etc). However you can use them on: ANY free after rebate or $1ar items and get the FULL REBATE, UPS Shipping, Copy Center orders, School supplies, Household supplies and Food Items (KCups, Candy, Nuts, etc), ALL TECHNOLOGY if you are buying a digital camera, laptop, Kindle, etc. While you can use rewards to PAY for free after rewards items, YOU DO NOT earn rewards when you pay with rewards, so that is NOT a good use of them. If there’s both a FREE AFTER REBATE ITEM and a free after rewards item during the same sales week:

Purchase the REBATE ITEMS on a SEPERATE RECEIPT from the REWARDS ITEMS.

Pay for your REBATE ITEMS with the rewards checks

Pay for your REWARDS ITEMS with cash/credit/gift card to earn the rewards.

DO NOT combine them on the same receipt, as the rewards payment is applied pro-rated against ALL items on the receipt and you will still get penalized in part, not receiving the full rewards back on free after rewards items, as a rewards check was used IN PART to pay for those items.

Hope this makes sense, as long as you follow the guidelines above, you can make excellent use of your rewards checks and never get “shorted” on your rewards items.

            GOOD LUCK!
            Mr Cheap

  3. Barb B

Is this a good price for toilet paper? New at this…thanks.

    • Mister Cheap

Yes, in my P&G (east coast) insert from earlier in Jan, there is a $1/2 charmin coupon.

Here’s the math (be sure to print out the 25% back in rewards bonus coupon in Collin’s post as well).

      Charmin Basic 16ct Big Rolls @$6ea x 2 =$12
get back 25% in rewards check in Feb = $3 ($9)
less $1 off 2 Manu coup = $8 net with rewards factored in or $4 per 16 pack or .25 a roll! which is dirt cheap for the big rolls.

Similar Good Deal on BOUNTY BASIC 8Pack $6
      less 25% rewards back = $1.50 ($4.50)
less $1/1 P&G Saver coupon on Bounty = $3.50 after coupon and rewards back (or .435 a roll!)

    • Mary

yep, Mister Cheap is right-great deal! Here is how I determine TP. I don’t go by price per roll since rolls can be very differnt sizes. I go by sq ft. So if the price is equal or less than the sq ft= great price. In this case the sq ft is around 580 ( not sure exact). So move the decimal over two spots on the sq ft and you get $5.80- anything under this price is stock up. So even without a MQ but just the 25% back it is like getting it for $4.50. Stock up!!

      • Diann

I like that idea for tallying when trying to determine a stock up price. I’ve tried comparing roll prices and it’s frustrating. Thanks for the suggestion.

        • Mary@4our2cents

No problem- glad to help! 😀

  4. Rebecca

the catch is you cannot get reward of multiples of an item. even if you buy 10, you will only get 25% back on 1.

    • Mister Cheap

That is not true Rebecca, the 25% back is on your ENTIRE PURCHASE. The rewards coupon fine print clearly says that. So if you spend $100 on items, whether 1 item or 10 items, you’ll get back $25 in rewards. This check will be paid out sometime in mid February 2012.

      • Christie

        I think you get rewards…not a check…please verify! 🙂

        • Mister Cheap

          Hi,

By “check” I mean a Staples rewards check, not a cashable bank check.

  5. Rebecca

oh. and the 25% is calculated after your coupons or other rewards redeemed.

    • Mister Cheap

yes, rewards are ALWAYS calculated after rewards redeemed. You can’t earn rewards ON rewards. However, on manufacturer coupons. Using the $1 off charmin coupon should not lower your rewards payout at all.

  6. Mo

Has anyone else had a problem using a mfr q on a product that is priced so that it comes out free? I was going to get the BIC permanent markers the other week and the guys at our store (No CO) told me that they can’t do that… I swear I’ve done it in the past though… (wasn’t worth the fight, and not a big deal – just setting things aside for a big teacher gift basket this next winter) 😀 TY!

  7. Jen G

    STAPLES Q ??
If I use a man coupon or $OFF$ on an EASY REBATE item, do they deduct Q amount from the rebate paid to me?
    Thanks

    • Mister Cheap

      Jen G,

No, rebate is NOT penalized for coupon use. If the rebate amount is $9.99 and you use a $1 coupon against it and pay $8.99, you’ll still get a $9.99 rebate.

However, if it is a FREE AFTER REWARDS item, you may only receive the $8.99 back in rewards.

      • Jen G

        Thanks Mister Cheap!!

  8. Indre

there’s no coupon at 1/8 ss for Bic highlighters I only see Bic razors b1g1 :/

    • Mo

      it was regional 🙁 hth!

    • guest24

It was not in the Houston paper either. I really NEEDED the Bic (white-out). Just the razor coupon. Pooey.

      • Christie

re-look for the bic stationary coupon…mine was not near the bic razor in the insert..

it was on a page with a food product right next to the bic stationary coupon…

I used it at walmart and got free white out! yipee! 🙂

        • Mary@4our2cents

I agree, it seemed to be “hidden”. It was on the page with Post Pebbles snack bars.

          • guest24

Thanks Mary and Christie…. I will look again. HUGS

            • Christie

You are very welcome and congrats on the great deal! 🙂

  9. nancy

My coupons says that you will get the extra 25% in your AUGUST rewards. Am I missing something?

    • Mister Cheap

      Nancy,

that is a misprint. The rewards will be in the February payout (sometime around 2/16/12)

      • Jane

Wow:) You are certainly knowledgeable AND helpful Mister Cheap. Do you have a blog or website about coupons to keep up on??

        • guest24

That is what I want to know . I would like to be “friends”. Unless you are in Houston…. Then you could go shopping with me. YOU are AWESOME……Thanks for all the answers. It makes me feel good when I am treated with dignity and respect. Just another reason I love Collin’s Blog.

        • Mister Cheap

          Hello Jane and Guest24,

Like many of you, I’m on the “front lines”, out there getting and maximizing the deals. No, I don’t have a blog or my own personal site. I’m quite content helping great people like Collin and her blog visitors by contributing my expertise about the Staples deals.

Sorry Guest24!, not in Houston, but I’ve been there. My pleasure treating everyone nicely. The maze of policies and types of deals at Staples can be taxing on the brain if you’re relatively new to the process. There is most definitely a learning curve, but over time, you will find yourself feeling much more confident and knowlegable about the ins/outs of the Staples programs and deals.

For most every problem, there is indeed a solution. It just requires asking questions and understanding the jargon/policies. That is most of the “battle”, once you do, you’ll be able to help answer many of the questions that I do now.

          CHEERS!

      • SC

I’m new and wondered – I bought a couple of the binders a couple weeks ago that were supposed to be 100% back (not sure if it was rewards or rebate sorry). nothing printed on my receipt, they told me I would automatically get a check in the mail sometime in the next 3-4 months. Is this correct or do I have to do something? I don’t want to miss out on getting the money back!

        • Mister Cheap

          Hello SC!

That is correct, there was a free after rewards promo on the Avery binders which ended on 1/14/12. If you bought the binders in Jan 2012 (lmit was 4 in a one week period), you’ll receive your rewards check in mid February ’12. If you purchased the binders in late Dec 2011, you should already have the rewards payout in your Jan 2012 statement. Either way, you can track your rewards (and print out/use your rewards) at http://www.staplesrewards.com

          Mr. Cheap

  10. nancy

    Thanks!!

  11. Janelle

Binder clips at my store were ringing up 50 cents! They were the traditional red, yellow, and blue colors. The brighter colors were ringing up at 1.00.

  12. Kim

    Christie says:

They use to mail them…Now they email you and prompt you to the wesbite for you to print rewards! I scored a kindle fire regularly $199.00 for $4! WAHOOOO
    ————
    Christie,
can you explain how you scored Kindle for $4? That is great!
I have rewards (21.95) that exp. end of this month, what is the best way to spend it?

    • guest24

      What’s a KINDLE FIRE?

      • Christie

It is like an Ipad from apple…like pepsi is to coke…lol 🙂

        • guest24

Oh… Obviously I am “out of the loop” haha…. I did go to Staples today, and I did see one. Cool.

    • Christie

during and around the time all the black friday madness, their were a lot of reward items…I purchased them knowing I was about to buy the kindle fire…

      Kindle Fire 199.00+ 12.00 in Ga tax= $212.00
-$125.00 ish in rewards for nov and dec
      – $50.00 credit card rewards on a purchase
-$33.00 ish in giftcards I got from credit card rewards points
      =4.?? total….I didn’t even pay but $4 of the $12.00 tax…WAHOOOO! 🙂

Use rewards for things you need such as toilet paper etc..or rebates where you turn rewards into cash! 🙂

      • guest24

AWESOME girl. I am soooo proud of you. Way to go. I did get 2 “bundles” of the Paper Towels, like Mister Cheap suggested, and, they were free…… BUT, that was just 12 bucks. It sure felt good though.

        • Kim

          Thanks Christie! That is great!

  13. Barbara

I’d like to buy the $50 turbotax software using the 25% rewards coupon.

It also has a $5 Staples rebate card with purchase.

My question is will I get the $5 rebate card in addition to the 25% rewards or does one cancel out the other.

Also can I use previous rewards toward this purchase. (For example if I used $15 in staples rewards will it void the 25% rewards. Or will it just base the 25% rewards on the actual paid purchase price of $35 ($50 – the $15 rewards I used).

    • Mister Cheap

Yes, you will get both the $5 rebate card in addition to the 25% rewards. If you use rewards to pay for a portion of the sale, then yes, you will only earn the 25% bonus rewards on ACTUAL OUT OF POCKET spend, not the full price of the item.

      • Barbara

The 25% off coupon took 1 cent off the transaction. Duh!

I wonder if it didn’t work because there was a rebate offer. Buyer beware if you are trying to get the 25% of Turbotax.

  14. Jaclyn

MISTER CHEAP……… Do you happen to know if you can use your “ink recycling rewards” on a “free after rewards” item & still get the “free after rewards” back? I know you can’t use your “free after rewards” on another “free after rewards” item. Or is it better to just cash out your “free after rewards” & “ink recycling rewards” on “free after rebate” items? Thanks! 😉

    • Mister Cheap

      Hello Jaclyn!

No, you cannot use rewards checks (whether ink recycle or regular) on free after rewards items and earn “new” rewards. They simply do not roll.

As you mentioned, the best strategy is indeed to “cash them out” on free after rebate items.

You should always purchase free after rewards items with cash/credit card or a Staples Gift Card to earn the rewards.

  15. a

    I’m getting the Error 404
when I click the 25% in rewards link

      • Laura

Thanks A says… I was getting the error through the other link!

    • Mister Cheap

      Hello Jaclyn!

No, you cannot use rewards checks (whether ink recycle or regular) on free after rewards items and earn “new” rewards. They simply do not roll.

      • Mercy

buhh for me i just spent it all on free after rewards. but hey thanks for letting me know for future purchases.

  16. eric

Im not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet but there is a $20 off $75 purchase on the back of the business customers staples catalog (which can be found a the front of the store and expires in april). Today I used that to buy 13 pkgs of the charmin tp for 5.99/each= 77.87 minus $20= $57.87 minus (4) .25 off from P&G= $56.87. I also combined the 25% back in staples rewards coupon(expires today). Before tax and 25% back factored in, I am paying 4.37 per package (.27/roll). Im not sure if the rewards back will be based off of 77.87 or 57.87. Either way, it will be a minimum of an additional $14.46 back. Based on that amount back Im only paying 3.39/roll.

  17. kim

Does anyone do more than one rebate or use more than one reward card? I was told reward card is one per household not per name. (I was hoping to get another one by dh’s name). Also logics of the FAR items deal, is it beneficial to get FAR items even we don’t need it and get the rebated checks later? We wouldn’t use those softwares and they are big chunks of money up front to get rebate later. I’m just trying to think if it is worth the hassle. Someone who knows/does a lot, please educate me. Thank you.

  18. kim

Thanks Eric for mentioning 20 off 75 coupon. It was for cleaning supplies only but I used it to buy 13 items (tp and pt). Too bad I couldn’t combine with 15% coupon but it is still good price.
