They have these at the 99cents store.
99Cent Only store has them too… always in stock
These are at Dollar Tree. Waste of money still though, they die in days.
They aren’t worth it. What a nightmare these things are. The amount of soil you need to use is so incredibly heavy that you need some type of reinforced hook or hanger just to bear the weight. All summer long I managed to get a whopping 3 tomatoes off it.
3 Tomatoes? You did better than me!! LOL! I hate this thing! There is a reason it went from $19.99 when they first came out to .99 cents! I had to buy a heavy duty metal post to hold the thing up and it still didn’t do much. I would not recomend this product.
Couldn’t agree more. So true for the price drop. We got them 2 years ago and tried and nothing came out and thought it was the weather or we might have done something wrong so we gave them another try last year and it was the same thing. They did not work, instead the tomatoes that we planted on the ground gave us so much that we have shared it with our neighbours also every week. These things are really not worth a penny.Thumbs down for them.
I don’t know what you all are doing wrong. I used these every year and I can’t eat the tomatoes fast enough. I grow Green, yellow, red, and orange bell peppers in them too.
The real secret to using them is you have to water then twice a day….. every day. Because they sit in the sun all day the soil can dry out quickly. So, use about a cup to a cup and a half of water at 8 am and 8 pm. I actually bought a $10 dollar drip irrigation system from amazon and a timer from lowes. After that, the only work I had to do was to pick veggies.
In response to the hook needed, it is in the bottom of the topsy turvey itself. When you take it out of the package, Open it up and shake it upside down, the hook will fall out.
I also recommend that you put 2 – 3 plants in each topsy turvey.
I use this every year and love it. We get tons of tomatoes and cucumbers.
What’s your secret?
I used this last year with grape tomatoes. It worked really well. I got three for 75 cents at cvs on clearance in Oct. that I plan to use this summer.
We’ve used these for the past 3 years, and I think they are great. We live in a twin home with a small yard, so we hang them on our balcony. It seems to work best with cherry tomatoes.
Save your money, these are terrible! We never got one tomato.
We used it for cherry tomatoes as well. We did get a good amount of them, but they were sporadic. One week we would get 5, then next maybe 6, etc. couldn’t do much with only 5-6 tomatoes at a time.
I find that the dirt used in them needs to be sifted, and I let the dirt set up in them before putting plants in them; I always have a large amount of tomatoes using them!
I got these for .10 each at the dollar general this past summer
waist of $$$$.. i hate these.. and i love to garden…
I love these I have had no problem with them got tons of tomatoes, only thing is they are only good for one season. But for .99 I think it is worth it.
It is really important to have good soil. Don’t just buy the cheap stuff.
I love mine!!! They do require more direct sunlight and much more water than people realize (we set up a drip irrigation at the top with half a milk jug with holes poked in the bottom that worked great) but we’ve gotten great results for cherry and heirloom tomatoes both.
I bought my mom one of these from CVS in December, because they were on clearance for $1. She finally got around to opening the box last week and there was no plant in the box. Waste of a buck.
This happened to me to. I thought it came with a plant, but I was wrong. Maybe I should have read the box better…
They don’t come with plants or soil – it’s just the container. I’ve had success with these before. You just have to use high quality soil, water every day during the summer and fertilize. I like them 🙂
Comments from 4 years ago? Are you kidding me? And by the way, if you do it RIGHT, IT WORKS AWESOME! I’ve grown peppers and tomatoes
My sister neighbors had one i saw tomatoes in her from across the street. i wonder if you need a certain brand .
my sister neighbor grew some from her balcony it worked great. People have good points onthis sight though how much soil and needing good hooks to suppot it. I looked it is different ones and sizes..
