How does this thing work? Is it for the smell?

It’s like a diaper genie. It’s for the waste after scooping. Personally, I think it’s just a waste of space. I get so many grocery bags and they work great doubled up to take out the poo.
You’ll end up paying for the refills, too.

      • Laura

I do the same, Sally. Free and easy!

Reminds me of the diaper genie 😉

I have to say, I was skeptical of the Litter Genie, but the last time it was on a gift card deal and essentially free, I picked one up. I am HOOKED. Basically, you should scoop your cat’s litter every day, but I found that even when I bagged it and put it in the trash, after awhile the trash would STINK (it’s just my husband and I– we don’t go through much trash!). This, you scoop the poo into the top and once you’re done, you pull a tab that disposes it into an internal bag and then once that bag is full (after about two weeks), you take it out and throw that away, then pull the bag down and start again. I go through one set of the bag systems about every six months and I have two cats. I think it’s an amazing investment if you’re not so jazzed about a trashcan that smells like cat poo all the time.

I agree with you. I was skeptical but bought it on sale a while ago It has worked really well for us in controlling odor, and the bag lasts much longer than I expected.

I bought one of these a few months back and although I love the idea behind it, found that it didn’t work as well as I had hoped. It’s a poor design which leaves you shaking the unit in order to get the waste to fall into the internal bag. This allows the odor to waft up while your checking to make sure it all went down. Not pleasant at all. We have one cat and I scoop his box every time he uses it and we were having to empty the unit once a week. The cost of the refills is hideous and we went through 4 of them in a matter of two months. Now the Litter Genie is sitting in our garage and we’re back to using a covered waste bin and we take it out every other day. I really wanted to like this, but sadly it just didn’t do it for us.

any idea how long this deal will last? I’ve printed out the coupons but I would like to wait till Friday when I’m out shopping/couponing 😉

I’m glad that so many people (owned by cats) have taken the time to post comments. I have 4 kitties and I have been wondering if the Litter Genie would be a worthwhile purchase and now I think the answer – at least for me – is no. Even though I do use reusable cloth bags when shopping, I still seem to get enough plastic bags to use to dispose of the litter box waste. The small plastic bags that I get when shopping at Rite Aid are perfect. If I ever need more small bags, I have seen packs of 50 for $1. in the $1+ section of my Rite Aid. They are the disposable bags for people that walk their dogs and pickup the doggy poop.

i have 2 cats n i love mine it works great n there is never any smell once its full we take it out!! im gonna get another one for back up. thank you for the heads up!!

since this is supposed to let you go a while before changing the bag, I had done just that. Now, I live in a small, relatively clean apartment with my kitty (not dirty, no dishes laying out, etc.) When I went to take the bag out, it was crawling with little flying bugs!! YUCK!I’m not sure how but it seems they got in there and found it a more than acceptable dung pile to create a breeding grounds. I liked this idea of this product, but I don’t want to be scared everytime I check inside there! I will just be using free plastic bags from now on and taking them out each day.

This is perfect for us here in CA where they have discontinued the free plastic bags from the grocery stores!

ok, here is a guy comment. i am not a pet lover. my wife is, and since i love my wife, and i like being married, i put up with the cats. and i also empty the trash. lemme tell you, the smell was overpowering. those grocery bags do NOT hold the smell. we keep the trash can in the garage, where i work on the cars all the time. when i open the garbage can to put the trash from the house, the smell is so bad, i had to open the garage door. in the summer when it is hot, it is worse. in the winter when it is 20 deg outside, it makes the garage so cold i cant do anything. the litter genie has changed all of that. almost all the smell is gone. the bags are much stronger than grocery bags, just wait till one of the grocery bags breaks IN THE HOUSE. we used the grocery bags for years. every nite, my wife would load up a grocery bag, and put it in the trash. we have the litter boxes(2 cats, 2 litter boxes) in the laundry room, and before litter genie, the smell was pretty bad. i would close the door, and run the blower. i went thru dozens of cans of febreeze and whatever. after litter genie there is still some smell, but way less. so, from a guy point of view, the litter genie is well worth it. if it costs twice as much, it is still worth it. and, lemme tell you, i was the one who bought this, my wife was skeptical. but now she also thinks they are “the cat’s meow”. it has made her life a lot easier, because she no longer has to take a bag out every nite. she can wait a few days. when my wife goes out of town, i gotta take care of the cats, which means i have to scoop the litter boxes. which i hate. litter genie makes it a lot better. i still hate it, but again, litter genie makes it easier. oh, and we been married 40 years, and have had several cats
