Thanks again for the Kmart post today! I just wanted to send a few pics of the AWESOME deals I was able to find just in case you decide to update with anymore posts on the clearance sale (feel free to use photos). NOTHING was priced correctly, but that didn’t stop me – I’ve learned from your site to price check, price check, price check! They had Disney Princess 2 pack Barbies (the princess & prince packs!) for only $3.99, they were $24.99-$29.99. TONS of Barbies (the nicer sets of Barbies, not the cheaper ones) for only $3.99. Star wars toys, Hot wheels, etc… all for $3.99! Woohoo! My daughter has a birthday party to attend on Saturday and these made for some awesome finds for the little girl’s gift.. and for my gift closet! What a great way to end the day after a tough day at the office!

I will agree the Princess dolls and Star Wars guns are great finds! 🙂 Way to go!

    • Heather

      Thanks!! 🙂

  2. laura

Our store had NONE of this stuff. I literally saw 1 toy with a $1.99 tag and none with a $3.99 tag and I scanned a bunch of stuff. 🙁

    • Heather

Normally our store has a clearance section, but I found the Disney Princess stuff where the regular Disney Princess items were. Hope that helps someone find some – if they go. 🙂

  3. Dallas

ME too our store had only though pillows dolls for 3.99 there was nothing else! So bummed

  4. Queenjen87

Sometimes Kmart hides the clearance stuff more or less. Be sure to check behind electronics and in lawn and garden areas for toy clearance

I need to get to a Kmart! This stuff will be awesome for Angel Tree gifts. Our Angel Tree had almost 60 kids left on the last day and we had to scramble to use donated funds/toys and spend just $20 on each one, which was really hard without sales/coupons!

    • Em

Last year our tree (we have one at the hospital I work out) consisted of kids asking for Xbox games, PS3s, TVs…it made me really sad. The year before one of the moms called asking us what her kids had gotten because she didn’t want to get them the same thing. When she came to pick up the stuff she demanded help with it to her car. It was a new year model paper tagged diesel Dodge, in the back seat a HUGE brand new TV and karoke machine. Merry freaking Christmas. This year we’ll be sponsoring 3 homeless families we’ve met thru work. Atleast they’ll say thank you- which is all any of us wanted.

      • Josie

That is sad. There are some people out there like that. Sorry your hospital workplace had such an experience when they were just trying to help.

      • MommySpendsLess

I saw a tree in Panera (to be perfectly honest I can’t recall if it was Angel Tree or just something similar) and thought it would be a good way to teach our daughter generosity…until I started looking at the tags and literally couldn’t find one that was a child asking for a simple toy. The tags were all for people in their late teens and early twenties asking for extremely expensive electronics. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are people who ligitimately need short term financial help and I couldn’t imagine not being able to get our daughter anything for Christmas….but I felt like those requests kind of missed the point and made me a bit aggravated. (I’m also not saying older kids should be left out but what about asking for books, make-up, a team baseball cap….you know stuff under $300)

        • Em

See! You get it! I see nothing wrong with a kid saying “you know- what I really want is an under armour Virgina baseball cap.” Or a girl saying “I really want a gift card to sephora” As kids get older their wants become more expensive but asking for a dang PS3 is irritating. And what on earth are 20 year olds doing on a Christmas charity tree!? When I was 20 I was exhausted working 2.5 jobs, holding my grades and studying for the MCAT not sitting on my butt playing video games

        • Cara

We saw a tag on an Angel Tree one year where a teenage girl was asking for socks. That was it. Just socks. I snagged that one and we got her lots of other things too – and plenty of socks!:)
When we lived in Dallas, a kid’s tag just read “Dallas Mavericks stuff” – that’s the basketball team there. My husband immediately said “Tickets!” And the tags were matched up by families and he had two siblings, so we got him a four pack of tickets and a Mavs hat — we often talked about “Man, I hope they loved that game.” It’s so fun to give — and just because you’re “poor” doesn’t mean you don’t want the coolest toy as a kid. Who wouldn’t want a PS3 as a teenager? They’re not allowed to want that but kids whose parents have more money can want it? Doesn’t seem fair.

          • MommySpendsLess

“and just because you’re “poor” doesn’t mean you don’t want the coolest toy as a kid. Who wouldn’t want a PS3 as a teenager? They’re not allowed to want that but kids whose parents have more money can want it? Doesn’t seem fair.”

I don’t think that anyone is saying that children or teens shouldn’t want something expensive. Heck, I’m 30 years old and I want a cool new car…but I’m not going to ask anyone else to give me one even though I can’t really afford it myself right now.

If I saw that a 4 year old wanted an iPad or a horse I’d probably chuckle and buy them something else age appropriate because at that age they don’t quite understand the value of money yet. But by the time you’re 16-23, you should realize that asking for super expensive Christmas presents is a bit rude, even if you’re asking your parents/grandparents/aunt/uncle/etc. Asking a total stranger to buy you a $300 toy seems a bit entitled to me.

It also makes it hard to get that person anything else. I would imagine that most of us can’t spend an extra $300 for a donated gift especially in addition to the other expenses of the holiday season. Since I don’t know that person, I don’t know what else s/he might like to get instead (that was in my budget) and since s/he had such high hopes I would think s/he’d be disappointed by whatever I chose. Then that tag ends up staying on the tree.

      • Michelle

How do you sponsor a homeless family?

        • Em

Reach out to them- help them. We get our social workers to do the footwork and we fund the expenses

          • Joann

            God Bless You!!

  6. Tracy

I worked at an inner city school and I worked part time at a car dealership to earn money so my students could do labs. And the owner of the car dealership had me get names of 5 families that wouldn’t have Christmas. I got the names and lists and I was only going to buy two or three things from each list; the most expensive thing on the list was a CD player! The owner of the dealership had me buy everything that was on their lists! The grandmother of one of them came in with tears in her eyes, saying thank you and asking who did this I told her Santa. The owner didn’t want thanks. But there are still teens that do appreciate the little things!

    • Em

Beautiful story. This is true help- help that is not sought after but given to those who truly need it. A CD player just goes to show you how truly in need they were- they are going out of style for the past few years yet this kid never had one and really wants one and finally had the opportunity. You guys gave that to him/her. Thank you for being a good person.

While CD players are rapidly becoming a thing of the past iPod shuffles and such ( an iTunes card) are cheap and a great present for teens, though, if they want a CD player do that- they may like that used CDs are so cheap now days! An electronic they will be able to use for many years- even while working or riding the bus or whatever- unlike a freaking PS3! LOL

  7. Donna P

I understand everyone’s feelings about the electronics. Sadly, though, that is what so many other kids have and a lot of kids want to be like everyone else. Heck, I hear it all the time from my 5. We COULD buy them all iPods, but my own children need lessons in responsibility, so they’ll have to buy their own. And they seem to be in the minority here, in the “Land of Entitlement” where we live.

For a teen to not be able to text or game with friends, it puts them on a different social plane. So for one who maybe doesn’t have ANYTHING, this one thing could make a difference in their self-esteem- if the thing is chosen wisely. I’m not saying they should have “Grand Theft Auto” or a new PS3 when an older version could do. The thing is, we didn’t grow up with electronics, but it’s what is out there now.

I do remember buying for an Angel Tree and the teen wanted a curling iron. You betcha I jumped on THAT one. Sounded like a girl that just wanted to feel pretty, like her friends. Another young lady wanted a CD player and music. It wasn’t very expensive to find a decent boom box during holiday sales and get her gift card for CDs.

I would be upset if I saw what a previous poster saw with the new vehicle and TV in the back. But maybe they borrowed the vehicle from a relative. There are those who take advantage, but so many REALLY do appreciate what they are given. I try not to judge. And thankfully there are sooooo many ways to give at the holidays to those who are truly in need.

    • Em

It can all be done in moderation- for a kid to flat out ask for a PS3 is ridiculous. A kid asking for a curling iron or an iPod shuffle or anything like that is normal. A truly poor kid (and believe me, I grew up POOR and didn’t even remotely start to have money until way after post grad- like go to bed hungry for nights in a row poor and no heat/water/roof sometimes) wouldn’t even think to ask for a PS3. I just wanted a good book for my fun present (many years there were no fun presents) and a dang jacket that was actually my size (thank you charity for keeping me warm- the size was wrong but I was warm and that’s what counted)- these kids just wanted the next big electronic for their collection. You can be like your friends on the same social field as them without all the big stuff. What ever happened to free radio to keep up with music and going to a friends house to play their games? And why does an 8 year old need a PS3 to begin with!?

As far as the new truck momma- she’s just a troll.

    • Darla

I agree! The children today do not seen to know about play and imagination, so they rely on toys that make the stories up for them (electronics). As for folks who do not seen grateful for what they receive, try walking a day in their shoes too. we do not know what others are going through. Those off us fortunate enough to be in a position to give must not give for others to see. We give to those in need because are blessed to be able to.

    • Katie

I’m so glad that someone pointed out that sometimes situations are different than they initially appear. I work with low-income folks and getting around can be difficult. People regularly borrow cars from friends, family, neighbors – especially if they are picking up something that would be too heavy or bulky to walk home with or take on public transportation.

I would encourage you to think, too, before judging someone’s “new car” or iphone. Especially in this economy, there are many people who need a little help who just a few months ago never thought they’d find themselves in that situation. They bought houses, cars, phone, whatever at a time where that seemed reasonable. But think about it – if you’re upside down on your car loan and you lose your job, what do you do? Do you try to sell it and lose money or try to hang onto it, hoping that your ship will right itself before it gets repossessed? Do you think the cell phone company cares if you call and say “gosh, I’ve got this new phone and a really high monthly bill, any chance you can let me out of my contract because I can’t pay anymore”? Anyone who has ever dealt with the phone company is laughing right now.

Anyway, I wish more people would try to keep these things in mind rather than rush to judgement. There are FAR fewer folks who are “taking advantage of the system” than the media would have us believe. Most people have a hard enough time asking for help when they really need it, let alone putting themselves in that situation if they have any other choice. Would you?

      • Carrie

Very well said. My family fell into that very same circumstance almost five years ago – we were not living outside of our means and we lived modestly, but I lost my job (after having my youngest son), and our world has been in a tailspin ever since. We quickly tried to explain the circumstances to every company we owed money to and were mostly heard by deaf ears. My minivan was repossessed and it was nearly a year before I could afford another vehicle. We did do away with extras (e.g. my husband was the only person with a pay-as-you-go cell phone because he was outside of the house), but as another poster noted, sometimes your children’s social needs are paramount, so it’s a very difficult equation to balance.

Last year during Hurricane Sandy, our house was damaged by a tree falling through our roof. Having been unable to secure another career-job (I do have a job, but at a fraction of what I was previously making), we were behind on our mortgage and now our mortgage company will not release our homeowner’s insurance check until they see 80% of the damages have been repaired. Obviously, it’s a catch-22; if we could pay for 80% of $30,000 in damages, we wouldn’t have been behind on our mortgage. So for now, we’re renting and waiting for the mortgage company to foreclose, again something we would never have anticipated 5 years ago. And still we keep saying, “it’s got to get better.”

Would I ever allow my teen to ask for a PS3 if we were on an Angel Tree? No. But the point is, oftentimes people are living their lives responsibly, life throws them a curve but they believe things will get better, so they keep going. Don’t pick the child asking for an unreasonable gift, but be thankful to be the person buying from the tree and not the person whose child’s name is on it. I’m sure the person who receives your gift will find it wonderful, regardless.

        • Christine

I will be be praying for you and your family!

If you’re getting too expensive angel tree gifts, try calling your local salvation army or nursing home to see if they have a list of gifts for the elderly. One year the salvation army had an elderly angel tree somewhere and the requests were heart breaking. One person wanted sheets. I got them sheets, a nice neutral colored blanket from the Kohls sales and a new pillow. Another wanted knitting hooks and yarn. Lots of requests for slippers and robes. I couldn’t stop myself, I think I bought five or six people gifts that year.

Also, I stopped by the K-mart in West Mifflin, PA and they had some things marked at $20, etc. (Laugh and Learn Apptivity puppy thing) that had clearance tags. I scanned them thinking they might be lower than the sticker but they weren’t. I got a few things but mostly, disappointed by what was left. Also – Toys R Us is having a clearance toy sale and I got some good things over there.

    • Christine

Our Kmart was the same. The clearance in the aisles is expensive. They have a table with the 1.99 & 3.99 clearance. I found a couple things to donate but most of the items were outdated toys.

  9. allison a

I wanted to let everyone know not all stores are participating in this…I stopped at my local KMart in Blaine, MN and they had many things you had mentioned, like the Life game, but they were still marked 12.50. I scanned them and spoke with a really nice manager. No sale there.

  10. Monique

    Has anyone tried from Chicago?

  11. Tara Blanchard

  17. Amelie

There are some in the clearance section holyoke,ma k mart
I bought an ID singer and a mrs president barbie 2012 (outdated) for 3.99 . Most of the other toys were higher amounts and ripped packaging.

  18. Linda

I visited 3 area Kmart stores today. I didn’t have any luck at the first 2. There wasn’t really anything that interested me. I hit the jackpot at the 3rd store. They had this sale plus there was signs everywhere saying an additional 50% off of clearance toys. So, a lot of my toys were 1 and 2 dollars. These were actually good toys also. When I got to the register I said to the cashier that there were signs in the back that said additional 50%. She said those were from last week and were supposed to be down but since they were still there she would honor the 50% off also. I would have been happy either way and the people in line behind me couldn’t believe my deals. Thanks for the heads up!

  19. Nina
