A $10 GC is great. But really, if you don’t think you’ll stay past the free period just hold off until December. It’s my opinion that Christmas is the best time to sign up for the trial period (Dec 11th-ish to Jan 11th-ish). If you really do want to shell out the $70 or so dollars for free 2-day shipping, then by all means, this is a good deal 🙂
We have had Prime since my husband was in college three years ago. He got a free membership for being a college student. We used it so much that we figured it more than paid for itself in just the shipping we save. We live in the country and not running out to get things all the time is great. We just got a Roku set up this week and are now taking advantage of the streaming videos for free. Amazon Prime is a no brainer for us.
Just FYI, if any of you guys just want the free trial and then decide to cancel, make sure you do it before the 30 days is up. We made the mistake of not canceling, and even though we didn’t have the available credit for the annual fee on the card we had signed up with (for the free trial), Amazon has the right to charge any credit card they have on file (that you may have used in the past to buy something off amazon) until they find one that will accept the charge. Geez, who ever reads the whole terms and conditions?!
It actually turned out ok. We dropped Netflix for the year (since we were paying 8 bucks a month for that = $96/yr) because amazon had streaming video, and we enjoyed the free shipping when we got stuff for Christmas and Birthdays (5 kids).
Does anyone know if the lending library books in this are available to those with the app and not a physical Kindle? Thanks!
Maryann, yes they are. You can choose to send Kindle books to your iPhone, read in your browser, etc. It doesn’t have to be sent to an actual Kindle.
Lending library is only available for kindle owners
FYI – the Kindle FAQ states the following – looks like you have to have a Kindle in order to borrow books from the lending library:
Note: Books that are borrowed from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library can be read only on Kindle devices.

You are totally right Chris, thanks for the correction.
Total bummer – I wish they would loosen this restriction!
Reply requested: I’m nearing the end of my free Prime trial and I have a borrowed book from the Lending Library. If I keep my Kindle off the wireless, do you think there will be an issue with my keeping the borrowed book for an extra few days after the free trial ends? Or will I be charged for the book? I did not find the service to be worth $79 a year – not just yet anyway – so I won’t be signing up at the end of the trial. We might sign up at the end of the year or early next year. I just didn’t read this book fast enough. I borrowed it Oct 2, but my trial runs out in another week. I’m hoping to finish before next week. I cannot find any info on this. (FYI: If I can’t keep the book, I plan to buy
