CVS: *HOT* $50 Extrabucks Reward for Buying PayPal Debit MasterCard for $4.95 (& Loading $150)

UPDATE: Please note that this deal may be regional…. so be sure to check your My CVS Weekly Ad to see if it’s advertised in your area. (Thanks, Tiffany!)
Calling all CVS shoppers! Here’s a super *HOT* deal for you (or at least I think so!). Just head on over to your local CVS store where they are offering up a $50 Extrabucks Reward just for purchasing a PayPal Reloadable Prepaid Debit Mastercard for $4.95 (and loading a minimum of $150 on the card). This offer is limited to 1 per household and valid through November 27th only.
What a *HOT* buy since you are basically making a little over $45 (when you subtract the $4.95 fee) to spend at CVS. And as you know, based on all of the great weekly deals, $45 can go very far at CVS!
(Thanks, Kris, Coupons are My Cash and Freebies for a Cause!)
The only problem is finding them in stock. My local stores antioch, round lake, cary, and crystal lake do not carry this card. Although some do have an empty spot in the gift card rack…
Easy fix…go to another store and get them off their rack. It’s not active until activated at the register.
You are not serious right?? I don’t think that should be taken out of the store even if it isn’t activated.
Lindenhurst just told me they would substitute the Amex Card for no activation fee!
I dont understand how this work out. I buy a card for $4.95 and load $150 on it. I get $50 ECB. How do I make $45? $150 – $50 ECB = $100
The $150. you are putting on your pre-paid card is yours to spend wherever and whenever you want. It’s like carrying cash with you. Then, in addition to getting your money back, CVS is “giving” you $45. to spend in their store (you’re paying $4.95 for the pre-paid card which you may keep and load additional funds to it if you desire).
But the card is worth $150…you get the $50 ECB for free!!
Because you still have a card worth 150 I’m addition to the 50 extra bucks
Because you aren’t losing money its yours to spend on the debit card and you earn the 45 dollars extra to spend at cvs. It’s not minus 50 its plus 50 🙂
Robbie your spending 150 4.95 = 154.95. Now you have a Paypal Mastercard for $150 on it (credit for you, your only down $4.95). Then you get $50 ECB (another credit). So you have made an additional $45 (had the 4.95 charge what you are down). Its a free $45 if you have $150 you already plan on using online! 🙂
Can be done twice
Can anyone confirm this?
Yes, limit is 2
I just did it twice – 2 separate transactions. I then rang all the other stuff up and just used the $50 instead of Separating the transaction
This true. I did this this morning! It’s a great way, if you’re like me and don’t always keep up with your receipts, to put money on a card and make sure you doing overspend! Lol
I called paypal to activate my card and was charged a separate 4.95 fee through them in addition to the one at the register. It’s still a great deal – but it was a $40 profit, not a $45 profit.
do i have to load the 150 on the card?
All you have to do is buy the card for $4.95, and not load anything on it? (Brain is not clicking with deal)
I did this today. I activated it right away and went to Walmart. Purchased gift cards at Walmart with the PayPal card and then deactivate the card. No issues.
you have to load 150 on it? how is this a mm then
It’s your 150 to keep.
because its a mastercard you can use anywhere… so you still have your money
Yes I loaded 150 on it. Paid a total of 154.95. Activated it. Went to Walmart and purchased gift cards that I was already planning to buy for Christmas. Then I deactivated the card. All within an hour. I activated my card online so I didn’t get charge another 4.95 by an agent over the phone.
How did you deactivate the card?
Yes, how did you close out the account? I bought some gift cards, but now can’t close out the paypal account. I’ve been on hold for 25 minutes and still no rep. The automatic service says I might be charged a fee for calling the costumer service number if the issue could have been taken care of on their website.
Did you have to pay to activate???
No payment to activate. Just a fee of 4.95 at the time of purchase
Do you load it at the register while you’re buying it?
I did this deal this morning and now I cant find my receipt with the 50.00 on it , can anyone help on it. if I can replace it some how.
Call CVS immediately!!
thanks, I tried there not there on sundays. I emailed them, and I’ll call tomorrow.
Log into your extra care account online at cvs.com and you should be able to print it.
They can not reissue extra bucks. I would start looking for your receipt.
log into your cvs xtra bucks online and see if it is sitting there..
all I see is the quartly reward. where would I find it
So this card can be used anywhere, not just on PayPal?
yes, its a mastercard prepaid card issued by paypal
Last I heard you can use it on groceries, gas, amazon, and many more. I purchased giftcards to avoid paying another 4.95.
why would you have to pay another 4.95 if you don’t purchase gift cards?
You can also take money out at an atm but you do get charged $1.95 sevice fee for this plus service charge afor atm unless you use an atm that waives this fee. You can look up an atm at paypal under faq for prepaid mastercard. The atm at my cvs was included so I activated my card and withdrew my money. Still $43.00 MM.
How much did you withdraw? I dont think the ATM lets you withdraw $148.
Is this deal only regional? I’m in NJ & I can’t seem to find it … Anyone know in jersey where to go ?
It wasn’t in my local ad but it showed up on my online ad and the ECBs printed successfully. HTH
To find out if your store or region is participating in the extrabucks deal go to cvs.com and click the my weekly ad link. Then make sure you have the right store/zipcode for your area or where you might shop. Then it will bring up this weeks ad and there is a link that will just show all the extrabucks for your area/store. If it isn’t listed then it isn’t valid in your region. My store was listed and I had to scroll almost to the bottom of the list due to all the extrabuck offers this week. Hope this helps.
Go on-line and look under ‘your CVS ad’ and it will confirm if it is active in your area
I never do these kind of deals but I am kind of thinking that I might have to try this one and use it to stock up on Christmas lights and such 🙂 Does anyone know if there is any other fees besides the $5 purchase?
YES. There’s a $4.95 monthly service fee for this card. I wasn’t sure how soon they would charge it, so I hopped in the car after I activated mine and bought a supermarket gift card (that has no fees) with the PayPal MC so that I wouldn’t lose any money.
Did you cancel your card to avoid any other charges? If so, please let me know how you cancelled the card. I have been on hold for 25 minutes and still no rep. I activated the card online, but there is no option there to cancel the card. HELP!!!
When do you get the $50 in extra bucks? Is it automatically printed out when you buy the card?
Woo hoo I just did this at CVS. The store manager was a bit flabbergasted (“This is not in the weekly ad!”) I showed her the screenshot I printed from my weekly ad online, and the ECB printed out successfully after purchase anyway. Just a note- they do require your SSN and address when you activate the card, and there is a monthly $4.95 fee associated with the card as well. I got around that purchasing a $150 gift card to Publix (local supermarket) so I could get all the money off the PayPal card. Then I called the customer service number on the back of the PayPal card and cancelled the card quick just to make sure I’d never be charged anything in the future. When they asked why I wanted to cancel, I just told them I had spent all the money already. Pretty easy way to make some ECB 🙂
Is this advertise in this week’s ad? I didn’t see it
For activation do u need to give SSN # ?
Yes, and your address.
How do you load the card? With cash? With a credit card? Can you use ECBs to load the card?
holy cow! Thanks Collin. I was in CVS when I saw this post so I picked up a PayPal MasterCard and got $50 extra care bucks. Awesome!
These cards come with a lot of fees, monthly fees etc. And ssn to activate? No thanks. Careful with these “deals”!
I have to agree. Too many strings attached especially if they ssn and charge monthly fees. If you can do this online do they still ask for ssn and do they really charge $4.95 monthly? I thought it was like a prepaid card that could be used anywhere like a debit card or credit card. And when you’re done spending the $150 on it that’s it but it sounds like they will continue to charge you $4.95 monthly unless you cancel it. What am I missing?
The SSN requirement scares me. Plus, you’d have to spend a $50 ECB all at one time!
Plus if you just want to make a profit to get the extrabucks and it doesn’t print out you are stuck with a non returnable card. There are way to many strings attached to this deal and I have been burned to many times in the past. No thanks.
Im almost jumped on this deal too! UNTIL I read about having to give out your SSN! Forget that! No thank you! Not even worth the $45!!!!!!! and how the heck would one spend $50 oop at CVS when ya roll ECB’s and or usually pay pennies OOP? lol
Possibly at the pharmacy but I don’t know if they would allow payment with it.
lol, true, poss. there IF they took em? IDK.
Has anyone asked if they run a credit check on you since they are asking for your social security number? This sounds a little sketchy to me.
No credit check. The SSN requirement is to verify your identity. People get these prepaid cards and use them to file fraudulent IRS returns and have the money deposited to a prepaid card. Even Walmart prepaid cards require a SSN now.
Is the $50 ECB on one ticket? So you have to spend the $50 all at once at CVS?
Yes you would but it could easily be used to purchase items that give back extra bucks. I want to purchase the dream lites thanksgiving and could easily use the rest on all the free offers, getting my extra bucks back in smaller denominations plus add in other itmes that generate extra bucks.
Do you have to activate it to get the $50 ECBS?
Yes or you wouldn’t be able to get your $150 back.
Ok, where are you seeing this on the CVS ad or site? I want to bring it with me in case I have trouble with it?
Does anyone know if you can use these through Amazon. I am a Prime member and will do most of my holiday shopping on Amazon.
You can buy an amazon gift card online (and email the code to yourself) using the card, and then load the gift card balance to your amazon account if you want to.
Thanks!
Hmm so could I buy the $150 card then turn around and use it to buy $75 in iTunes or other gift cards at cvs?
Yes you can do that.
No, they shouldn’t let you use a gift card to buy a gift card, per their policy.
It’s not a gift card actually. It’s a mastercard so it will work.
Their policy says “CVS/pharmacy gift cards cannot be used online at CVS.com or to purchase any other retailers’ gift card or prepaid card that CVS/pharmacy may carry.”
This does refers to CVS/pharmacy gift cards NOT pre-paid debit cards.
I did this deal ans NO SSN was required.
It’s hard to spend $50 in one transaction at CVS for me since I try to buy things that’s almost free after coupons. What do you all buy to use it up?
You could turn around and use the ecb’s on the deals that Colin posted this week that also had ecb’s. This would help you to break some of them up. That way you could just spend them as you need them.
I never spend $50 at one time at CVS, so if you get $50 ECB that has to be spent all at once, it is not such a good deal.
It is ‘free money’ splurge. I think I will be purchasing hair and face products that are on sale to maximize my free money.
In addition to the activation fee, there is also a $4.95 monthly fee. Ideal would be to get the card today and spend the entire 150 within a month.
Just wondering if this works with any other gift cards. My cvs does not carry the paypal mastercards. Just looked. 🙁
Just did this deal!! Thanks colin
can you use the ECB to buy gift cards?
NO unfortunately you cannot.
Such a great way to get wrapping supplies, cards, and stocking stuffers! I will have no problem using the $50 all at once…that is $50 I didn’t have before so boom…a few little extras DONE!! Great deal!
Was just at my cvs, they have signs posted saying they will not be issuing them
Where are you located?
Is the card activated at the register?
I just read on the site for this card that when you load in a store you have “limited availability”, they go on to say activating ensures a permanent card being sent to you, ability to reload, etc. This would lead me to assume that activation is not completely required. Can anyone confirm?
Can you buy say a CVS gift card with the $50 ECB?
YOu cannot use ECB’s to purchase gift cards.
I saw this ad in my online deal (put in my zip code for my local store). I just went and purchased it. I got home and realized I didn’t get the ECB for this. I bought a paypal $150 card just as described and had them scan my cvs card, but no ECB. What should I do? I feel like I just wasted the activation fee and now have this card for no reason!
This is actually a limit of 2 per card.does anyone know if i can load another $150 to the card i already purchased to get the other $50 ecb?
You could use part of the 50.00 to purchase the 25 freebies Collin listed in her weekly CVS post. That would break down your 50.00 into more manageable amounts. For me the deal breaker is the ECB expiration date and that ECB’s can’t be used to purchase gifts cards. Since what is left on my Christmas shopping list is really big stuff that CVS doesn’t sell and my grand baby no longer lives nearby to make diapers an option I will sadly pass.
I’m going to use my ECBs for makeup, toilet paper, shampoo, etc. Then I can use some of my monthly grocery $ normally used for toiletries towards Christmas. It will all work out in the end.
Great idea, Laura. I was thinking of using it toward grocery items, but makeup & personal care items would work, also.
SO WHEN YOU BUY THE PAYPAL CARD PAY THE 4.95 ACTIVATION FEE, DOES THE ECB PRINT AUTOMATICALLY, and if so DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO LOAD $150.00 IF THE ECB PRINTED.???
You have to pay $154.95 to get the extra bucks to print. The $150 goes on the card.
Hello, my understanding of this deal is you pay the $4.95 activation fee and put $150 or more on the card then an ECB for $50 will print. If someone can make a ‘step by step’ on how to do this deal, it may help those who are having trouble understanding how this works.
1) Pick up qualifying Paypal card
2) Take it to the register.
3) Hand it to the cashier and ask to put $150.00 on it.
4) Have them scan your CVS card or enter your phone number.
5) Pay $154.95 (This includes the $4.95 activation)
6) Card will activate while the receipt prints with your $50 Extrabuck on the bottom of your receipt.
Worked for me this morning. the manager didn’t think it woyld wotk brings it is not in their ad, but he was wrong!
Hey Collin,
1. If you don’t use this card in 36 hours you are charged the $4.95 monthly fee.
2. You need to log into your CVS account and check your featured items to see if this is in your area, as it is regional. Some stores only have a $10 ECB.
Tiffany
Are you saying in addition to the $4.95 activation at the register you have to spend the entire $150 within 36 hrs to avoid another fee of $4.95? If so, this is getting too complicated for me plus the risk of the $50 ECB possibly not printing and no refunds on the card I would’ve just paid $4.95 to get. When is the expiration date on the $50 ECB that must be spent all at one time?
30 days
I don’t know where some of you are getting your wrong info, it says on the back of the card monthly fee off 4.95 applies if card account is inactive for 90 days.
Expiration date on my ECBs is 12/25/13.
You can do this deal twice? It says limit 1 per household on the online ad.
My ad also said limit was 1. However, after my first purchase my receipt showed “amount toward next reward $150,” which implied that I hadn’t reached the limit.
I purchased a 2nd one in my next transaction & got a 2nd ECB. This time my receipt showed “limit reached.”
Our area must be the only area that doesn’t have this deal. I could cry. :O(
So I (almost lol) understand that I will need to #1: grab the Paypal MasterCard ***(can anyone tell me what PayPal gets out of this? The activation fee?)*** #2: pay $150 + $4.95 fee at checkout *** (can I use a $5 ecb to pay the activation fee?)***
#3: I will have $150 on the card to spend anywhere ***(before a month so I won’t be charged another $4.95 fee?)*** #4: can I use the MasterCard to purchase a $150 gift card (luke to a restaurant) from cvs that won’t have a monthly fee?
Yes, PayPal gets the activation fee and any subsequent monthly fees (if the card is not used up and cancelled within the time limit). Not sure if you can use ECB’s to pay the activation fee. Not sure is you can use it to purchase other gift cards.
Went to my store to do this deal and the register beeped error code after two tries.
Was told I could call later to see if they got it working or not.
The fine print in the card package states that the first monthly fee of $4.95 is deducted from the card account within 36 hours of card purchase. So basically it’s only about a $40 mm, but still a great deal IMO.
My online ad reads “limit of 1 per household.” Can anyone confirm their ad reads the same (limit 1) but they in fact were able to do this deal twice?
