Target Shoppers: Security Breach Affecting Millions

Attention Target shoppers! If you made any credit or debit purchases in-store between November 27th and December 15th, you may want to check your bank or credit card statements very closely. It appears that unauthorized access to Target’s payment card data during that time period may have allowed suspicious charges affecting millions of credit and debit cardholders. Keep in mind that this breach only happened in-stores and did not affect any online purchases. Head on over here for more details on how it may have affected you.

I just talked to my bank and they said they would not cancel my debit card if there has not been any fraudulent charges…just to keep watching my account. Really.. so we just sit and wait…that’s crazy to me!

    • Cathy

I would call back! Are you supposed to continuously worry and check on your account? That’s not right.

      • Sarah

You should moniter your account on a regular basis regardless

    • Gina

I would call back and report the card “lost or stolen” to get it reissued. Better safe than sorry.

    • Rae

ya I would call back! If they say no and management says no I would close the account and get a new bank. They should have more concern for their customers than that.

    • Sarah

My debit card has an 800 number on the back that is a Visa number (since it is issued by Visa) and they got mine canceled for me.

    • Jessica

That’s what they told me too. I told them I wanted it reissued immediately and they did it as a lost card. I was not going to take any chances. Like others have said, I’d call back. HTH!

    • Potato

Dude that is ridiculous. Call them back and tell them fine, then my reason for canceling my card is because I am switching to a competing bank.

  2. EG

website is a mess and the number on the back of the card doesn’t work to get the balance. great. I have a bill to pay in a couple of days so they better fix this so we can look things up.

    • Janet

You can pay your bill in-store fyi.

    What to do:
About 40 million credit and debit card accounts were impacted by a major security breach at Target stores across the country, the company confirmed.

Credit card data likely was stolen between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 through point-of-sale machines and thefts include customers’ names, credit and debit card numbers, and security codes.

What now? For customers whose information was stolen, the owners of insurance firm Protect Your Bubble suggest following a quick checklist of dos and don’ts.

Monitor your banking activity and credit cards daily. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity
If you think you might be at risk of a data breach, change important passwords such as online banking and ATM.
Do not open any emails or click on any links from banking institutions
Do not share private information over the phone with someone who might call you saying they are from your bank
    Consider identity theft protection

The Better Business Bureau notes that identity theft is still the fastest growing white collar crime and urges customers to do these five things:

Contact the organization that suffered the breach
Check every item on your banking and credit statements
Contact any affected financial companies and request that the account be closed and a new one opened
File a fraud alert with all three credit reporting agencies
Sign up for any free credit report monitoring that’s offered

“With access to information such as pin numbers, it is very important for consumers to develop good habits for protecting this type of information as well as passwords used to access credit card accounts” said Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB.

Target said it is “putting all appropriate resources behind these efforts” and recommends anyone who shopped at the store during the breach should check their accounts and immediately report any suspicious activity.

Victims of unauthorized activity should also call Target at 866-852-8680.

Prof. William Kresse, a security expert at Saint Xavier University, said the theft could be as big as it looks.

“If it pans out the way it seems to be looking, this could be the biggest credit card breach in the history of credit card breaches.”

As many as 40 million Target shoppers who hit stores in the three weeks after Thanksgiving had their credit and debit card information stolen.
If you’ve visited a Target over the past several weeks, there are a four steps you should take immediately to protect yourself.
    1) Check your statement. It may seem obvious, but the first step you should take is looking for any charges you don’t recognize on your statement.
Don’t just look for large charges, either. Hackers often ping an account with micropayments of only a few cents to check the viability of the account. So if you see purchases of 6 cents or 11 cents, that could be a sign your information has been compromised.
    2) Call your credit card company, bank and Target. Credit card companies generally offer customers fraud monitoring services at no cost, and customers aren’t on the hook for any fraudulent charges. Typically, the card issuer or the merchant is responsible for those costs.
But don’t wait for your card company or bank to call you. Let them know you’ve shopped at Target recently. All you have to do is call the number on the back of your card.
Target has also set up a phone line for customers who suspect there has been unauthorized activity on their accounts. Shoppers can call 866-852-8680.
    3) Replace your credit card, change your PIN. If the bank didn’t already do this for you, do it yourself. This will put an end to any more fake charges.
Once you receive your replacement card, make sure to update your new card information with any companies that have your account on file for automatic payments or monthly fees, like your Apple iTunes account or cable provider.
    4) Sign up for a fraud monitoring service. If you’re concerned about credit card theft going forward, LifeLock and other similar threat detection services claim that they can monitor your card activities and alert you when your account has gotten into the wrong hands. Most credit card companies offer similar services for free, but threat detection services say they go above and beyond, including offering protection of credit card information on the Internet and even lost-wallet insurance.

I called my bank (BofA) to cancel my debit card, & the agent suggested I wait as the new card can take 5-7 business days to arrive…and the bank is viligant about monitoring for fraudulent charges. Well it’s true that waiting for a new card is an inconvenience, but better safe than sorry! It would be more stressful having to deal with fradulent charges in my opinion.

    • Carol_R

I’m guessing that BofA wants the revenue from you charging on that card and that the 5-7 days for the replacement to come they consider lost revenue.

      • Anne Klein

        Especially the week before Christmas!

  5. MzFHughes

I was a victim! I got a call from my bank on Monday at about 3:30pm in the afternoon saying there had been 3 charges for $108.00 (we found out they were $100 Visa gift cards plus the processing fee) and a $15.00 from Target in Charlotte, NC (I live in Arkansas). They immediately cancelled my card over the phone and I went to my bank and got another one. The transactions had taken place an hour before at 3:27pm. The bank said the charges were still pending and therefore were cancelled and all was well, my money was returned. I spoke to a Target Asset Recovery rep at one of the stores, and we identified that two of the transactions had taken place there. TODAY, I got a fraud alert on my credit report, turns out a $639 NEW BILL came up on my report as of 12/16 (SAME DAY AS MY ID THEFT). I called the collection agency, I was found nowhere in their system and was told to dispute it as it is probably identity theft as well.

    • Priscilla G.

So sorry to read this happened to you!

      • Trinity

I’m so sorry!! OMG, I’m so worried about this too!!! 🙁

  6. rufus

Just got off the phone with Chase. They issued me a new card to pick up at a branch immediately. No questions, or problems. Chase is on their game with this.

  7. Molly

So, this is probably a stupid question, but am I looking for only suspicious Target purchases or all suspicious purchases (not just Target shopping)? I have the Target debit card which was used soooo many times during this period and a bank debit card which was used as well.

    • julie

Any charges from anywhere, that you did not make

    • CarolW

Any charges, anywhere. Not just Target purchases. I was recently the victim of debit card fraud on another card I hold and the perpetrator was putting through charges on tickethub and at some hotel/resorts as well as some international charges. I am a Bank of America customer and they called me before I was even aware of what was going on so the resolution was smooth, just a hassle.

  8. Bunny

My hubby and I are diligent about keeping tabs on our credit cards because we have been hacked twice now. And even though WE’RE on top of things, problems like this that are out of our control do happen. So here’s what we do….

    1. Keep all receipts so you have a paper trail if things go wrong. That way you will always have proof of purchase. (I hate it when I get a cup of coffee and the barrista asks if I want a receipt. The answer is always yes!)

    2. Go online once or twice a week and check transactions against receipts.

    3. Shred all documents once you have confirmed the receipts match your credit card or bank statement.

    4. NEVER use your computer where others can gain access to your information (i.e. a coffeeshop).

    5. Invest in a “cloaking” device. This allows you to work via wireless while protecting all your important information.

    Hope this helps everyone!

    • Melissa

Bunny, would you elaborate on the “cloaking” device? Give some specific names of products to protect your information?

      • Bunny

Melissa….My husband is the “Information Technology” geek in our family so he’s the one who found out about it. Here is the website to the cloaking device.

        https://www.getcloak.com/

All I can say is it gives us lots of peace of mind when we’re purchasing something online and using our credit card. We have it installed on our laptop, iPad and iPhone.

Hope this is of help to you!

  9. Joy

This could not come at worse time. I have not even started Christmas shopping yet. Going tomorrow. If we cancel cards through bank and Target do they replace immediately or I have to wait a few days.

    • Joy

Oops! I meant do they replace immediately or do I have to wait a few days for cards?

    • J

I canceled my Target debit card and she said it would no longer work. I should receive my new one in about 10 days :/

  10. Delene

So sad reading all of the Hipsters comments. I hope things are quickly resolved for you all. My blessing I haven’t shopped at Target this year

  11. Erica

I pay with my cc majority of the time at target especially during the holiday season. We pay it off completely when it’s due. My cc gives me cash back when I buy things. Cash does not 😉

Anyways I used my card once at target on 11-30. No fishy action so far. But I’m keeping an eye on it.

And yeah really didn’t want to see my cc balance right now! Teehee.

  12. TeeTee

I made a purchase on 11/12 and then on 12/16, am I in the clear or should I cancel?

  13. Jenn

I have a debit Redcard. Just called my bank that holds the account that debit card is linked to in order to see what to do. They advised their fraud department is monitoring all charges related to this with extra scrutiny. They said if I haven’t been contacted by them and there haven’t been any charges so far it wasn’t necessary to cancel my bank debit card, but he offered to issue me a new card right then for piece of mind. He also advised that canceling the bank card would automatically cancel the red card as it’s tied to it. He also said that in the event that suspicious charges did come across, I would be refunded the money to my account in no more than 1 day. Based on all of that, as well as the official statement from target which does not say that pins were stolen, I have decided not to cancel right now. I will cancel the red card as soon as I can get through to do that, but I will wait to see what other info comes across on how this will affect the linked bank accounts before I cancel that. Hope I don’t end up regretting that decision but I’m going to trust my bank will have my back in this as they always have before!

    • Dallas

Actually that is incorrect information teh target red debit card is not tied to your banl card it is tied to your actual bank account. This is why they need you to bring in a check to set it up so they can get the bank account and routing number.

      • Jenn

Ok excellent point there I didn’t even think of that, clearly this situation has affected my common sense. Even more reason to cancel the debit red card, and really it’s pointless to cancel my bank debit card, I never used it at target so it’s tertiary in this whole mess. I need to watch my bank account which fraud protection is doing too, so hopefully all bases are covered?? Ugh this whole thing sucks…

    • paulemay

I called my bank and they said the could easily change my account number which would stop all charges form the target debit card since it is linked to the account number. granted if you use checks you would need to order new ones and possibly need to get new debit cards from your bank too.

  14. Katie

This is such a huge bummer, especially for those whose accounts were hacked. So far so good for me, hoping it stays that way… At least for me the big lesson is to remember things like this can happen anytime at any retailer or online, and I need to be much more careful with my personal information. Just got done ordering new Target and debit cards just to be safe, and changing all my passwords for all the websites I use containing personal info.

  15. jacwooten

Cancelled my card just now. Used it 3 times during the period they specified. :/ Credit Card Rep. said most of their customers were cancelling their cards (if they had shopped at Target and used their cc there in the past 3 weeks). This is a shame.

  16. JulieC

I went to target on the 14th. I always watch everything they ring up as im sure you all do, i looked down for just a few seconds and my total went from 70 to 150, I went to my car and looked and something didnt seem right but they way target shows coupons on their reciepts is a little confusing(I like when they are all at the end), so i was wandering if that could be apart of what was going to on bc i didnt have $150 worth of stuff?

  17. Brooke

I just got off the phone with Target (thanks to person who posted calling from outside US number – got right through…). There is a lot of misinformation here throughout all the comments. This is in large part because Target is not communicating effectively with its customers and everything is turning into a sea of uncertainty. From what I was told: 1) this compromise IS isolated to only select locations; 2) all of those compromised were notified by Target; 3) this issue is considered resolved as of December 15; and, 4) Red cards are not necessarily in the mix because they require the 4 digit PIN to access. Regular Target credit cards are more susceptible to the fraud. Now, if I’m wrong, fine. I’m just going by what I was told. I have checked my account and, thankfully, do not seem to be affected. I already have a credit alert in place with all credit bureaus based upon an unrelated incident. That might have helped. But from what the seemingly well informed Target employee informed me, the above is where things stand as of 2:35 p.m. EST December 19, 2013. Just wanted to share my experience, take it or leave it. Happy Holidays!!

    • TeeTee

I’m not sure what to believe now but thank you for your comments 🙂

    • Brooke

Oh – and I decided against canceling my Red Card. I also called my bank and they offered to cancel my debit card, but I have never had one nor used one. They said canceling the Red Card would be the only thing to do. I didn’t do it though as I haven’t seen any suspicious activity. As it is connected to my checking though, I view it frequently enough that I will see if anything pops up.

    • vicki

thank you brooke! i just got off the phone with them was well, and was told the very same information. we have the target debit red card and because of the 4 digit pin, they are NOT AFFECTED by this breach. the same thing was told to me at my bank, but i wanted to be sure for myself.

      • Brooke

Thank you for confirming my information. It’s always to hear it back just to be sure. 🙂

      • lizbeth

would you please post the phone number you called where you actually spoke to someone? Thanks!

        • Julie

I have a Target Debit card and my card was affected so this is not true

    • Kelly

Unfortunately, I do not think your second point is accurate. Two of my friends had their credit cards compromised due to the breach and they both only found out because they checked their accounts. So they were compromised and not notified by Target. I think people really have to look out for themselves and check their accounts and not wait to be notified of fraudulent charges.

      • Trisha

        Not notified…only checked my account b/c I saw Colin’s post….$300 charge in Tennessee at a Walmart… I don’t live there.

        • paulemay

Fraud and cc theft occurs every day. Just because you had fraudulent charges doesn’t mean it was from this indecent. I’m not saying it isn’t from this breech just saying there is a good possibility either way.

    • Erica

Target legally has to inform anyone that was compromised, not just the public service announcement.

  18. TeeTee

How are people cancelling their cards? The number keeps giving me a busy signal!!!!!

  19. Christine

I just called my credit union. Was told they are monitoring the situation. Not really worried because we do not keep any extra money in that account. I only use that account for shopping, gas, etc. (I deposit money and we use it for certain expenses). My other account at another credit union we do not have a debit/credit linked to it (that is our main account). I was just talking to my husband yesterday that we should get a lifelock or something as we have been getting some weird numbers showing up on caller id and weird phone messages.

  20. cathy

They got me for $575, I’m in Tampa.

    • Stacey

Cathy, which store did you shop at? I’m in Tampa too but have had no luck checking balance on line or by phone. Just can’t get through

  21. Mary

I spent 20 minutes on hold (listening to their stupid self promo song) waiting to cancel my Target card and then it rang like it was going through only to give me a message saying their system was down and to call back later and it hung up on me!!! Target has major problems.

  22. meme

I just changed my pin on the target debit card using the target app on my phone. Dont even bother trying to get online on their regular site. It crashed! Use the app.

    • meme

…then once the craziness dies down with the phone, you can call and cancel your card if you choose to do so. I’ll still keep my card. LOL…I love target…even with the breach! 🙂

      • Mel

I agree, I still love target. It could have happened to any major retailer. But what is disappointing, that they were quieting it down. I wonder when exactly they find out… They should have made public at that point!

    • Louise

I tried changing my PIN on the App and it said it can’t be done on a mobile device.

  23. PCL

I’m glad that I use cash wherever I go! & When we do pull money out, we just do it at a bank’s ATM (both mine & my husband’s banks are out of our area).

    • Christine

Be careful even with bank atms. My sons therapist had thousands of dollars taken out of her account when someone switched the swipper (not sure the technical term) at her bank. Her daughter got her in the habit of checking her bank account daily so she caught it right away.

      • JulieA

The same thing happened at one of our local banks. Pretty much we are at the mercy of thieves! They can strike anywhere/anytime….

  24. Melanie

Sorry if this is a repost but target debit cards are apparently ok and not involved.

  25. Elisabeth

I’ve been able to get online and change my pin for my Target debit.

    • Heidi

I can’t get my pin changed online–Elisabeth, how did you do it?

    • Debbie

      Me too

    • Elisabeth

The site worked just like normal for me. Changed pin under the manage pin section.

      • Heidi

Ok, I finally found where that is and changed my pin, thanks! I want to cancel the card but can’t get through to them, so at least the pin has been changed. But I hope I can get through and get a new card at some point.

Wow, it literally took me 20 mins. to change my pin on their website. It’s terrible. It keeps making me put in security info over and over again, and then kicking me back to the main page. Finally got it to work. I’m going to be cancelling my card after tonight’s shopping trip.

  26. devon

They got me for $535. My Christmas is ruined for me and my kids. idk what to do.

    • Melanie

oh my – im so sorry.

    • meme

you call them. Its a fraudulent charge so your credit card will take care of it.

    • lynn

I’m very sorry this happened. Maybe you could call a local charity, explain you were a victim of this mess & that you have nothing left for Christmas?

    • Bunny

      Devon,

Call your bank or credit card company and ask to speak to the Fraud Department. That will get you quickly where you need to be. You will not be responsible for those charges. Just call ASAP and they will send you a new card.

    • andrea

Call your credit card company and report the charge. You are typically not liable for fraudulent charges. I do not know your bank, but with mine they will credit the money back to the account and start a process. There will be some paperwork and a new card, which is the real bummer 🙁 Think about all the bill payments that have to be changed to a new card number, pending payments that may get cancelled. I’m wondering if they are liable for credit monitoring though. You can only check your credit once a year for free (with each agency).

      • andrea

I just did the free annual credit check with one agency and reviewed their fraud prevention tips. Here’s an interesting piece of info:

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you specific rights when you are, or believe that you are, the victim of identity theft. Here is a brief summary of the rights designed to help you recover from identity theft.

You have the right to ask that nationwide consumer reporting agencies place “fraud alerts” in your file to let potential creditors and others know that you may be a victim of identity theft. A fraud alert can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you. It also may delay your ability to obtain credit. You may place a fraud alert in your file by calling just one of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies. As soon as that agency processes your fraud alert, it will notify the other two, which then also must place fraud alerts in your file.
        Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; http://www.equifax.com
        Experian: 1-888-397-3742; http://www.experian.com
        TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; http://www.transunion.com
An initial fraud alert stays in your file for at least 90 days. An extended alert stays in your file for seven years. To place either of these alerts, a consumer reporting agency will require you to provide appropriate proof of your identity, which may include your Social Security number. If you ask for an extended alert, you will have to provide an identity theft report. An identity theft report includes a copy of a report you have filed with a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, and additional information a consumer reporting agency may require you to submit. For more detailed information about the identity theft report, visit http://www.consumerfinance.gov/learnmore.

First number got me to a mailbox, so I called the Experian number and placed the initial alert. I also got to add a phone number so vendors need to call me before any credit checks can be initiated. This will be in place for 90 days. It was all automated, never spoke to a person.

    • Potato

Relax, Christmas shouldn’t be about getting hundreds of dollars in presents anyway. Now your family can focus on what really matters instead, while this gets sorted out.

  27. Kris

Many thanks to the poster who gave the outside USA number. I used this to cancel my card. The call, as timed by my phone, was just under two minutes long. To repost, the number is 612-307-8622. Thanks again!

    • visitor3

“All circuits are busy now. Please try your call again later.”

  28. Felicia

Atlanta: Whoa–looks like I have some comments to read through (over 300!). I just hung up w/Wells Fargo and she said **any** card swiped @ Target (in particular Black Friday) is vulnerable. So check your bank debit card and credit cards as well, folks.

  29. darla

Don’t think this is linked to the Target breach but someone ordered 3 Ipad airs on my Best Buy credit card the other day. I had called Best Buy (and talked to someone in a call center overseas, I’m sure) about a gift card promotion & then had 3 charges on my card the very next day! They were all to the same person in California & the a$$hole was even having them expressed shipped!! Best Buy cancelled the orders but what if I wouldn’t have caught it in time?!? Here’s to hoping that all the thieves are caught & punished!!

    • andrea

Happened to me before too, someone ordered ipad accessories with my card number to some place in Florida. Never lost my card and at that point I didn’t even have a cell phone or anything other than a computer. I figured it was through online shopping that someone got my info. I’m checking daily every since and while it was a nuisance in the beginning it’s routine now and I’m quite on top of my credit card expenses 🙂

      • Mandy B

Someone from another state charged their Comcast Bill to my bank account last year. My bank didn’t flag it or anything, and they made me go into a branch to have the charge reversed (had to leave work early to be able to do this). It’s such a huge pain. Then I had to close my bank account and open a new one.

    • Melissa

I had someone order a $1200 Nikon from my Best Buy account last week!

      • darla

was it thrung le from garden grove, CA???

  30. Lisa

Good luck trying to get thru Target. I have been trying all morning. Sometimes I think I have luck only to be cut off. When I redial I get a busy signal. Frustrating as I do most of my shopping at Target with my Visa/Redcard. The only good think is I don’t have debit.

  31. Summer

I have had my cc number stolen 4 times. No idea why. I am careful! One time, they bought $3,000 gift card at lowe’s. People are just awful.

  32. rae

I had to call my bank for a different reason and asked about this as well and I was told that they were told it was mostly debit redcards that were affected??? this is contradictory to what others have reported in this post. I will say that it would make sense for it to be mostly red Debit because obviously Target is the only place you will use that card so if people have one they will use it. I was also told that this bank is looking into all of their customers accounts and if they find odd activity they contact the customer. She did say that if charges were found there would be zero liability.

On a side note of how many people are reporting in this thread alone that they have had fraud in their bank accounts is just insane! I hope you all get this figured out what an awful time for it to happen. At the same time I am so very glad I don’t work for the customer care lines for Target, Target RedCard, or any bank. I can only imagine that some people are understandably upset about this but are taking it out on the wrong people. The thieves are to blame in this so remember to be nice when you have to make the calls.

So, the one who were compromised, did you use target debit card? To my understanding you can use the target debit card only at target or target.com. Yes, it is linked to you bank account, but… To order online they all require the security code on the back of the regular debit card, which target has no access to it. Target is only allowed to withdraw from your account with purchases at their store. Am I understanding this right?

    • Sue

When you swipe your card, your information is transmitted through the magnetic strip. I can’t say for sure if the security is transmitted through it too. If it is, then they’d have that information too.

    • Cathy

I used my regular MasterCard, nothing to do with Target credit or debit cards and my account had multiple charges at gas stations in a nearby city.

  34. Amy

I just checked my account. I was half hoping someone stole my identity, but nope, I’m just that poor.

    • Michelle

Haha, that was my first thought too! I quit my job four months ago, so my bank account has been steadily decreasing. I was kinda disappointed when I confirmed today that there were not any fraudulent charges.

Cant get online on Target to check my redcard–not debt, just redcard credit card. Where those impacted too? ughhh.

    • Heather

Wondering the same thing. My mom has the Target RedCard with a Visa logo and I just have the Target RedCard. Been trying all afternoon to get through with no luck. Neither of our cards are tied to a bank account or other credit card.

  36. Jessica

I was hacked using my regular debit card (not Target Redcard). $656 dollars stolen. My account has a hold on it now and we won’t have new debit cards until after the New Year. Pretty awesome.

  37. kia

I just discovered that I was a victim. it wasn’t as outrageous as others but still. I had to close accounts and file a credit report review to see what else may be affected. this is extremely upsetting to me that someone would do this!

  38. Em

My moms Visa credit card was hacked for a little over $1000 🙁

    • Amber

That’s terrible 🙁 I’ll never understand why people think its okay to take what other’s have worked so hard for.

      • kia

I was wondering the same thing

  39. Amanda

My bank called me today and said there was an attempt to access my account so they automatically canceled my card and issued me a new one. I’m in ky and shopped at target once last week.

Having dealt with previous identity theft I HIGHLY recommend turning off overdraft protection. This allowed thieves to drain my checking and savings and overdraw them in a matter of hours. I’d much much rather have a transaction declined or pay a fee on a bounced transaction. Whenever possible I keep more money in my savings then in my checking so their’s less

There also are sites like Mint and BillGuard that allow you to link your accounts and see all transactions in once Place. yes you give them your bank login but they are reputable sites …mint is now owned by Intuit (Quicken). Billguard will email you if they think a transaction is suspicious. Thankfully they have only sent me ones that were unusual but were really me.

If you’re not comfortable with outside then make sure you check your online banking as regularly as you can. For those who say that they don’t like their information in a computer the fact is it’s already there. Your bank, every store, every doctors office….they all use computers. You might as well embrace technology and use it to your advantage.

Thank you, Collin! If you didn’t post, I might have missed this! I don’t watch TV or log onto our computer regularly. My husband just got us both new debit cards as well as his credit card. I feel so sorry for the headache this has caused others who ended up with crazy charges.

  42. Alla

OMG! We don’t shop at target much and we pay cash 99 percent of the time but recently something crazy happened. We shop at Walmart maybe 1-2 times a year that’s it. Our walmart is rally bad when it comes to coupons and customer care and is always dirty. My husband checked his account and someone made a purchase at Walmart on Black Friday with his debit card for 67.97 dollars. Good thing he checked his account and filed a claim and got his money back. But the thing is that he got only 1 card and it’s always with him so how could someone use his card at the store. His bank asked him to go to walmart and they will find out with the security cameras who did it but he refused to go. I was really really curious and pushed him so much but he refused to go find out. I called and asked if I could go instead of him but they denied and said it has to be him and I could go with him but they won’t give me the evidence without him. I still wanna know who was it and how could they do that.

    • lacy

I’m betting a friend of his or family member… likely he has figured it out and doesn’t want you to know, given that he is so against finding out. Is there an in-law that you don’t care for much? I have heard this happening to people who had a friend or family member steals from a completely trust person. darn thieves!

      • T.S.

I was thinking the same thing lacy! Very odd that he is refusing to find out!

  43. Allie

This just blows. I cant even log into the website and the 800 # i get this message “can not continue processing your call please hang up”

  44. Teran

I finally got an automated person on this number… 800-755-5856… Went through the steps and reported card stolen. They are issuing me a new card but I will not be activating it.

    • Teran

This also allows you to check if there are any pending charges.

  45. Deanna Madison

Check your homeowners policy. I’m a Farmers Insurance agent, & we automatically include (no additional premium) $30,000 in identity fraud protection. We also provide an option, Identity Shield, for a small annual premium. Identity Shield works similar to LifeLock & does the monitoring for you in addition to a number of other benefits. While it would be awesome to be able to avert any issues arising out of the security breach, at least you know that you have protection if it’s included in your homeowners policy… particularly since it’s sometimes difficult to monitor your account that closely for such an extensive time period.

  46. Amanda C

6053624400, is the number I called. Someone answered right away and said there was an 8 minute wait. I said I would wait. After a few minutes another rep got on the phone and took care of me right away and I was able to cancel my Target debit.

  47. Alyssa

What about the Starbucks that are inside of Target? I stopped at one about a week ago…

  48. Jen P

I was one of those affected….my credit union caught it as the thieves tried to charge a $100+ meal at Applebee’s in a town in the next county over and automatically denied payment and canceled my card for me!

    • Janie

That’s pretty good. It sounds totally feasible to me that you could have went to the next county over and ate at Applebees. I wonder how they caught that? I can see when the transaction is in another states or even more obvious another country.

  49. T.S.

Wow I have to say I am always sad that I don’t live near a Target…kinda glad now! So sorry to all those affected 🙁

    • Jessica

It can happen at any retailer.

  50. Janie

Has Target ever emailed anyone of you directly about this problem? I was surprised to not get anything.

    • mingofan

Yes, I got a lengthy email from Target this morning

      • Mandy B

Oddly enough, I just got an email from Target this morning to an account not linked with my Red Card or my Target.com profile. Weird. Didn’t get the email on any accounts actually linked to Target.

        • mingofan

My email just starts “Dear Guest” with no mention anywhere of my account per se (no reference to my name or the last 3 or 4 digit of an acct number like many cc emails), but the email was sent to my email address that’s on file with my RED account

          • Mandy B

Mine said “Dear Guest” too. I really don’t know if that means we were potentially targeted or what. Anyone else get that email today?
