Hungry Howie’s has had gluten free crust for months now

What is gluten free? Any details why its better?

    • Misty Nicole Roberts

Originally, gluten-free diets were designed to combat Celiac disease, a serious autoimmune disorder that virtually destroys the intestinal tract. Celiac affects about 1 percent of the population, and is reversed by taking gluten out of the diet. People try gluten-free diets in response to feeling tired, bloated or depressed, and find reducing gluten correlates with feeling better and lose weight. I am on a gluten-free diet because of my PCOS, and insulin-resistence, while I’m TTC.

What about someone who has no health issues at all why would someone choose glueten free

        • Myrtle

          Because it is a fad.

          • Amber

Mrytle, for those of us who become very ill when consuming even trace among is gluten it is most definitely NOT a fad. I suggest you educate yourself. Gluten free is not something that is going to disappear. It is only in recent years that the medical community has found a link between gluten and lots of medical conditions. To answer Casey’s question, if you are healthy there is no need to be gluten free. It costs more, doesn’t taste as good, and is processed. If you want to live a healthier life eat fresh fruit, veggies, and meat and avoid processed foods be it gluten free or not.

          Decreases inflammation in the body

I have been not only gluten free, but grain free since September. I have experienced the following side effects:
        1) Lost 30 pounds
        2) Cystic acne on chin cleared up
        3) Rosacea resolved (dermatologist no longer needs to see me)
        4) Sleep better
        5) Went from having borderline hypertension to normal BP
        6) Lower triglycerides
        7) Helped my osteoarthritis (the reason I started it)

        • Amber

That’s awesome 🙂 I hear stories like this all the time.

    Domino’s has a gluten-free crust, too!

    • sara

It is not completely gluten free for those who have celiac. They have cross contamination issues at Dominos.

      • theladyprefers2review

I’m friends with the only Domino’s in my small town, and when I explained my dietary issues, gluten-free crust and my allergy to onions, and he makes special batches for me. He makes sure the sough is used on a clean board. You just have to ask.

  4. Heather

It’s an allergy to the protein component of wheat, rye, barley, to name a few. Is gluten free better, you ask? Yes! It is better, if you are allergic to it, yes! 🙂

  5. Rae

This has been a thing at a lot of pizza places for a while. Happy Joe’s and Godfather’s has had them for at least a year. I found for myself I don’t get bloated when we have gluten free pizza. I try and make it at home when I can but its nice to have the treat of eating out sometimes.

  6. Kim

Yes, several pizza chains have had “gluten free” options for a while now, however for those with true, debilitating Celiac’s disease, it’s often not enough. The cheese or sauce may have trace amounts of gluten, the other toppings can be a gamble, and cross-contamination is always a huge risk. If you’re using gluten free as a lifestyle choice, then you’re probably actually eating “gluten light.” But many of the things advertised as gluten-free will knock down people at the extreme end of Celiac’s for days.

    • Kathleen

      Exactly 🙁

  7. Connie

Gluten free has also been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from Hashimoto’s, a thyroid condition, or most with thyroid related issues. There is a lot of correlation between gluten and autoimmune diseases as well.

    • Amber

I love Udi’s brand. Their pizza crusts are actually really good. I’m glad you mentioned the correlation between gluten and other health conditions. I’m gluten intolerant. I feel like a lot of people are really uneducated about gluten in general and don’t realize the serious damage it causes some of us. There are hundreds of health conditions linked to gluten now. Personally I struggled with a huge list of conditions for 30+ years, physical& psychological that literally disappeared when I went gluten free. After going from being so sick to being in perfect health now, I know how damaging it can be.

  8. Casey

So does glueten free pizza taste good? Is it better than the regular one? Is it less calories for someone who is on a diet?

    • Emilytwinmom

As a general rule, gluten free products are not the same as their glutenous counterparts. So no, I would not expect gluten free to taste nearly as good as real pizza! And gluten free food usually has a ton more calories than their regular counterparts 🙁

      • Jamie

The website says that it has the fewest calories of all the pizzas that they serve. It might not taste as good as their pizzas but it’s an awesome options for people like me who don’t have the luxury of eating other fast food

  9. Kathleen

Be aware of the sauces at pizza places. If you ask for gluten-free crust they don’t notify you of any sauces with gluten, such as some white sauces. I have severe celiac disease and if I hadn’t asked they would have made me very sick. Ive chosen to stop eating out because of these situations. There is a terrible lack of knowledge surrounding auto-immune diseases and their complications.

  10. Marion

Now if they could get VEGAN CHEESE my life would be made… 🙂

  11. Tiara

It only comes in these two rounds tells me it’s all pre-made. Which is fine! But if your eating at home I recommend just buying the frozen one from the grocery store at about half the price. Otherwise it’s very nice to have an option for eating out!
