Wouldn’t you love to know whether your local Walmart or Target has items in stock before you leave home with the kids and waste gas driving to your local store?! Well, now you can!

Keep in mind that sometimes these inventory systems can be wrong due to theft, loss, and other circumstances.

Here’s how it works at each store…

Walmart blue basket with groceries

Walmart Inventory Checker:

  • Head to Walmart’s Brickseek inventory checker, enter your zip code and the Item ID#, and click on the Check Inventory button.
  • You will then be able to view the price of the item, whether the item is in stock at Walmart stores near you, and the approximate number of items in stock.
  • To locate the Item ID#, head to Walmart.com, search for the item and then copy the group of numbers at the very end of the URL.
  • Check out this example: I searched for “LEGO Creator 3in1 Treehouse Treasures” on Walmart.com and then grabbed the Item ID# 206718784. I can then see that the Walmart stores near me all have this item in stock.

Target Inventory Checker:

  • Head to Target’s Brickseek inventory checker, enter your zip code, the DPCI# or UPC#, and then click on the Check Inventory button.
  • You will then be able to view the price of the item, whether the item is in stock, and the approximate number of items in stock.
  • To locate the DPCI# or UPC#, head to Target.com, search for the item and then scroll down the page to the “Other Info” section to find the Store Item Number (i.e. DPCI# or UPC#).
  • Check out this example: I searched for “Swiffer 360 Dusters Heavy Duty Starter Kit” on Target.com and then grabbed the DPCI# 003-05-0977 (the UPC# is directly above the DPCI). I can then see that all of the Target stores near me have this item in stock.

Not only is the Brickseek Inventory checker available for Target and Walmart, but it’s also available for CVS, Staples, BJ’s, Office Depot/OfficeMax, Macy’s, The Home Depot, and Lowes! Read on for details on how to check inventory at those stores.

I love this tip! I often check on items on target.com, but this seems more accurate than just checking if something is “in stock” or “limited stock”.

  2. Pam

Thanks Colin! I usually check target.com before I leave. It’s really good for Walmart.

  3. Andrea U

Thanks for this tip – usually with Target, my computer just freezes when I try to see if the store has it “in stock”.

    • Jennifer Gill

right! mine does too…seems like any task on target.com is too much for their servers to handle…it’s extremely frustrating!

  4. veronica

I’m still waiting for those red velvet oreos!

    • katie

      I got mine last week.

      • veronica

        Really? At what chain store?
And do they live up to the hype? I loveeee all things red velvet 🙂

    • April

My target in central Florida had them

    • bali

Target at the checkouts (not regular shelf). I thought they were just okay, regular Oreos are better.

    • Chrissy

Walmart had them on an end cap on the Valentine’s section

    • Rae

Our Walmart had them with all the rest of the oreos. It was a very small pack which is what caught my attention. I didn’t buy them to know what they were like.

    • veronica

Thank you for all of the responses :). You guys are the best. I’ll go check again this week

  5. Carol

Thanks for the tip. Had a lot of trouble with Dasani sparkling water last week and had to call Target location to check stock.

NO OFFENSE COLLIN BUT: From a mom who used to work at WALMART for 12 years and just QUIT in October to be a stay at home mom with her kids I can personally tell you DO NOT trust this system because it is run by corporate NOT your “LOCAL” store and I would advise if you are going to be making any kind of special purchase on gifts, etc. to call ahead to make sure the store really DOES have the items

    • Chantallie

I learned that with the Thomas the train 5-in-1 track set recently…

    • Monique

I have to agree double check with the actual store, particularly if it’s for a gift. We found out the hard way before xmas while looking for a special Xbox bundle for my son. It showed that there was stock available for pickup at 3 different stores. Each time we place an order it was canceled. After having orders canceled for 2 out of 3 stores. I called the final store and was told no Walmart in the state actually had anymore of that particular bundle despite what the website said.

    • lori

I learned this with the xbox one madden bundle. It showed in stock and when I drove 30 mins to the store, the electronics employee told me they haven’t had this item in a long while. She said they want you to drive to the store and buy something else. 🙁
Don’t know if that part is true, but I was not happy.

      • Tara

I believe this was covered in Collin’s “NOTE” at the bottom of the post. This is not her first time at the rodeo 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the feedback! I think it’s very wise to call ahead to verify inventory. 🙂

      • Adrianne

Walmart is one of the worst “on-line” stores to check for availability as they told me in the stores that the site is never up to date.

    • David

You are absolutely correct! I ordered a TV online being it has been impossible to find in majority of Walmarts near me, it showed as available online from one of my local stores but was extremely disapointed when i went to pickup at store being they didn’t have the TV; online stock stated store had two but did not even have one when I showed up.

  7. Lori Stevens

Thanks so much for posting this. This is going to be a huge help!

  8. Sunshine

I find this rarely works as well. Everytime i’ve wanted something system says not in stock but when i go to the store it is there! (Yay!) and if i call to confirm if something is there i feel the employee is too lazy to actually go ck and they just tell me no. :/

    • Tia

Haha! This goes on a lot at the holidays (not saying how I know!)

  9. Jen

For target, it’s only updated in the morning at opening time. So if you look at 2 pm it may say they have some in stock but that doesn’t factor in what they sold from store open till 2 pm

  10. bel

A manager will tell you its NOT true but an actual past employee like myself knows how the system works and it isnt UPDATED like it says it is – it is ALWAYS at least in my opinion 24 HRS behind what is actually IN STOCK at a store and if they dont know what your asking for when you call they will just tell you NO but it isn’t because they are lazy most of the time it is because they aren’t trained to know what to do

    • Sunshine

If they don’t want to take the time to learn and be properly trained then i call that LAZY

  11. lancy

out of topic, did anyone get those cottonelle containers in fb? i didnt get mine.

    • Kristina

      I haven’t gotten mine, either. 🙁

    • turquoice

      Me neither.

    • mackyjane

I was just thinking about that this past weekend that I hadn’t received mine either. I was getting so excited about finding something put in them. Maybe they’ll come soon! I’ve lost track of time so I’m not really sure how long it’s been since I ordered, but I feel like it’s been long enough! LOL.

    • Amanda

No, didn’t get mine. I was wanting to use them for daycare teacher valentine’s day gifts, but guess I’ll be using them for another holiday.

    • Amanda

I emailed about mine because it had been awhile and they told me that they had been shipped and gave me tracking numbers. I got them about 3 days later, so you might try emailing their customer service and asking.

  12. Lindsey

will this work with clearance items? For example, when they have the toy clearance? Could you check to see if a toy is on clearance?

    • Sophie

Yes, thats what I use the most for. I take a picture of clearance tag and then when markdown day comes for the section I put DPCI in and see what price it dropped to. I had my eye on suitcases 2 weeks ago and on Thursday of that week, this stock check showed it had dropped to 70% off, when I got to store it was still marked (and rang up) at 50% so I took it to markdown team and they scanned it and sure enough it dropped to 70%.

      • Sophie

Should clarify that I use the stock check website that I posted above.

  13. Erica

This is almost NEVER accurate! Learned that the hard way… an associate even verified that the stock updates are only done once every 24-36 hours.

  14. Paul Moore

As a former Target and present walmart employee, I cannot say enough how inaccurate checking inventory online is. I have countless stories of people coming into the store with their online numbers only to leave upset because the stock just wasnt there. I wish these online numbers werent available it just sets the customer up for disappointment and the employee with a headache.

  15. Amy Stotts

Gotta be careful if you’re depending on it being there when you get there. The inventory is always a bit off at Walmart…I was on the inventory control specialist team when I worked there. Especially on things you know started in a box of a certain number (most food items and paper, pens, etc, for examples. Then, if it says there is 1 in stock, you’re unlikely to see it on the shelf at your store.

  16. Tim

I really don’t trust Walmart because the last time I made a purchase online for store pick up, even though it said the items were in stock, I arrived to pick up the order and find out that it was completed with similar items just to see if I would take them instead of what I ordered. The sales clerk told me that somewhere up the food chain they were told to do this just to make a sale.

  17. RH

Have you seen Walmart’s lines? Inventory changes every 2 minutes. In the time it takes to drive to the store all of the items could be sold out. But if the item is in their ad, you can get a raincheck now like a normal store 🙂

  18. Christa

There’s a new money making app available to iphone users (not Android at this time, but soon!) called Chameleon. You can check inventory and also use it as an in-store scanner when you need to price check an item. Saves you from having to find a scanner if there’s not one close to you which is so nice!

I’ve been making more money there than I have been on Shopkick. I’ve already made $5 today on my phone from scans only. For every store you walk into you get 1 point. For every item you scan you get an additional point. Once you reach 20 points, you get a $5 Target gift card. Makes me feel like I’m contributing to the household in a small way as I’m a stay-at-home mom.

I’d love to get some referrals if you join https://bnc.lt/l/3dtZIA-5U. Thanks!

  19. preeti

Collin you are great !!! thanks you so much for this tip !!!!!!

  20. Olia

I have a question. If system shows one price for specific item in my target store, but When I come, price scanner shows totally different (twice more expensive) – is there a way to make something (like price adjustment) or it’s just system mistake, and store price is the final one? Thank you!

  21. Joanne

is there a way to look up the clearance at Meijer?

  22. Darryl

I do 80%of my shopping on-line whether it’s shipped to me, the store, another location or I pick it up because it’s in stock. Here in the Tampa Bay area, Walmart is pretty good at having an item in stock in “your store” when the web site says it does, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Staples, not so much, if any of these stores web sites say they have an item in stock at “my store”, I always call and ask for them to physically go check, because if my computer says the store has it in stock, so will theirs. I don’t know how many times the person (irritated because they had to go look) came back to the phone and said,”I’m sorry, we don’t have that in stock, I don’t know why the computer says we have it”. TIP: Always ask the name of the person helping you, less likely they will lie to you about checking to see if it’s in stock, saving you a wasted trip to the store.

  23. CH

I am not finding the “other info” section on an item at Target.com Did they get rid of it? If so, how else could I find the DCPI #? I’m so lost! lol

  24. camelia

My mom got a food saver 3200 series
For Christmas I’ve been trying to return it for a week they keep saying they need the approx date it was bought to look it up how can I find out when it was sold

  25. Kim

Not working. Ads keep popping up but nothing shows for the results.

  26. sharon fisk

I am wanting a single soap dispenser to hold shampoo and is attached to the shower wall

  27. Plasma

It really ticks me off to see that all three items I’m looking for are out of stock. IN EVERY. SINGLE. STORE.

  28. Steve E. Williams

I know you all are to busy to just tell me if my Monroe Walmart has a product in stock . what is wrong if I would just like to see if its in stock so I can drive over and pick it up? I don’t want to join face book or do other dam digital tricks. item is Kenmore refrigerator water filter .
