I would love to know what others think about this deal. We are looking for ways to cut our cable cost. It’s outrageous. Can anyone please share if they have cut cable completely and if so, what servies/devices do you use? Any regrets or advice? Thanks so much everyone in advance!

    • elise

We haven’t had cable in 5 years. We do hulu, amazon prime and netflix streaming. Only thing we occasionally miss is sports, but if you really want to watch something on a local station, you can always get an antenna.

    • marlene

Kelly last yr i went on maternity leave and i knew we couldnt afford cable services i cut them all but i have family memebers next door so we share internet services (wifi) . I use netflix for $8.99 a month and stream them through the tv or ipads. We had a great summer with no cable. Im 28 have 3 kids and have only had cable for 4 yrs out of my life my parents didnt have cable either its not necessary and since we both work kids go to babysitter we rarely watch tv. If u live within 50 miles of tv towers you can get an antenna and use that we just did that it cost $150 at best buy and placed it on the roof and thats it. Hth

    • April

Right now we only have Netflix, and I have no complaints. I can always find something to watch for myself or my son. My husband always wants cable though. I constantly have to tell him no. Haha. I think he mainly misses sports.

    • Traci

We cut cable about a year ago and do not miss it! We have Netflix and Amazon Prime and use a Roku and Amazon Firestick. We are thinking about getting Hulu and may look at trying Sling TV. I am excited to hear AMC is coming to the channel line up at some point!

    • Erica

My husband and I cut our cable subscription over 2 years ago and we haven’t missed “real” TV that much (hubby does miss the sports networks for college football games not on network TV). We installed a large, rooftop antenna so we get free local NBC, ABC, CBS, CW, Fox and other over the air channels, plus we have a Netflix streaming subscription with a Roku. I just signed up for Sling TV a week ago because I love HGTV and it has ESPN for the hubs. If you’re interested in an antenna, the website TVfool.com will be able to tell you what networks are available in your area and how strong the signal for each is. Also, check your local library, many have complete seasons of TV shows and movies available for check for free or a small fee.

      • Traci

How do you like Sling TV so far?

        • Erica

Sling’s been great, I got my HGTV fix over the weekend! 🙂 I did find that I might need to upgrade my wireless router as the picture was sometimes a little grainy/pixel-y, especially on shows with a lot of movement, like a basketball game, but that’s also the case for shows on Netflix. There’s no DVR function but some channels allow you to pause them mid-program.

    • Kristina

I am also interested. The only reason I haven’t cut satellite (cable isn’t an option as I live in the boonies) is because my teen son would “die” without ESPN. So, this looks very promising.

    • Kimberly

We have not had cable or internet for 5 years. Our library has alot of complete seasons on dvd. We recently moved to an Apt with free wifi and now use HuluPlus which I get for FREE from bing rewards. Sometimes I do not have enough points and cancel until I do usually no more than 2 weeks but since it keeps 5 weeks of shows usually I dont miss a thing. If you have a laptop Hulu regular does have a ton of shows for free some networks make you wait a week or two for the newest episode though. I rotate between HuluPlus and Netflix when one does not have anything I want to watch on it. Like recently for the holiday when most shows went on hiataus I cut off hulu and went to netflix(like 8 bucks i think) to wait out the brake. I am a amazon prime member ($49 for student and I buy eveything in the world from amazon so FREE technically) and they get some of the same movies as netflix for free too. So those are my only 3 services HuluPlus, Netflix and Amazon.

    • Mrs. Waller

We cut cable over a year ago and haven’t missed it. We use Red box (when free codes are available), Netflix, and we purchased a multi directional antenna. The antenna allows us to watch all of our local channels, so we don’t miss our college sports. 🙂

  2. TGS

We have not cut cable completely but recently reduced it by two levels and requested a lower internet price. They agreed to the internet price reduction for 12 months. So, for a year we will save $60/month and then it will be $40/month. In exchange we have netflix for $7.99/month which we all love!

  3. TGS

Sorry, I neglected to say that we use Amazon Fire Stick which I purchased months ago when they were selling it cheap to Prime Members. So we stream netflix and Amazon Prime video.

  4. Anthony

My wife and I have cut the cord completely. We use both the Roku 3 and Fire TV. The services we use are Netflix (Great original content), Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus. We also plex for CBS. And for backup we have a Mohu antenna. We Don’t care for sports so the Sling TV service does not work for us, although I can’t wait for HBO Access.

  5. L

I cut my cable off and pay for the internet. I am currently on a 59.99 plan with Comcast that includes basic network channels and HBO. I am also suppose to have faster internet service with this plan , but it doesn’t seem faster. I have netflix and brought Amazon Prime when it was on sale for 72, but it’s not worth it for the tv shows and movies. I would like to look into this deal and see if I can get my internet plan down. I don’t miss cable at all, save a couple of shows. I usually find those online though:)

  6. L

Oh and I believe Roku is also offering the same deal. I heard the amazon stick can be glitchy…

  7. Renee

We have not had cable for over 3 years. We have a Roku and stream Netflix and Hulu Plus. I have been missing HGTV, DIY, Food Network, TLC and ESPN. I have bought seasons and episodes from Amazon and Vudu to get my craving satisfied. I know that Netflix has added some shows from HGTV and Food Network but they are limited to 25 episodes of each show and will eventually be removed. I saw the ad for Sling Tuesday and signed up for the free 7 day trial. It has been nice to watch LeBron and the Cavs last night and Fixer Uppers and Property Brothers. The service has some episodes on demand and I noticed that on most of the channels you can back track what has already aired (since you started the service) and watch shows from earlier that day or even days ago. Although we are already paying close to $20 for Netflix and Hulu, I think I might sign up for this even though I know we will never watch several of the channels that are included.

  8. Cat

Deals even sweeter now, if you have amazon fire tv or fire stick, theyre offering a free 14 day trial, so you can see if you like it before you spend your $$

(Simply go to your fire TV menu and select sling tv then sign in for your free trial)

    Cat

  9. CJ

For those of you who have cut cable, how much total per month would you estimate you pay for all of your various services and what do you pay for internet? I debate this from time to time but we pay about $70/month for basic cable plus internet so I always come back to wondering whether it will actually save us money to make any changes since we’re happy with the basic cable we have. When I start thinking I still have to pay for some internet service then hulu, netflix, the fire stick, etc it starts to add up in my mind.

    • Kimberly

      HuluFree only on laptop,
Hulu Plus Free through bing rewards,
Netflix only when Hulu has nothing I rotate and cancel the other $8
Amazon Free because I think the billion things I buy take care of the $49 student membership I pay but $99 for non students.
I have free wifi but always get ads for $14.99 no contract locked in internet pricing.

    • Damien Barber

I am paying $40 for comcast internet (but that includes $10 modem rental which I am planning on buying one soon to make it just $30). I usually get just one of the big three (Amazon Prime/ Hulu Plus/ Netflix), so thats between $8 and $9 dollars per month. Thinking about getting slingtv. If I do that then the most I would be paying is $70 per month, but probably only $60 since i am planning on buying a cable modem soon.

  10. Judy Trac

3 month subscription is $60,might as well buy the stick with that $

    • Damien Barber

Well yeah if u r just getting it for the stick, but if you want to use the service then its like 2 free months since the sticks are almost $40.

  11. shirley

Cut cable 10 years ago and have been using antenna since then. I don’t use amazon prime/netflix/hulu plus. There are so many inappropriate shows and commericals on TV nowadays so I am happy that my kids would rather playing outside than sitting at home watch TV all day.

  12. Ashlie

Anyway to catch college football live? I’ve been looking into it all week. There are a few options, but they all seem hit or miss depending on what network has the rights to the game. If I could get a good sports package, we could get rid of the rest of our tv bill!! (which is now $95 a month through Dish Network)

    • Kimberly

I would look into comcast we got an ad last week no contract all the sports channels $39 a month plus the $7 receiver fee. You could at least cut your bill in half or tell Dish you are thinking of switching because of the price is there any promos going on? They will usually offer you some money off your bill.

  13. Kelly

You guys rock!!! Thank you so much for all the detailed feedback. We really need to cut back, but have been so nervous to do it. One more question: do all of you have a land line for your phone? Wondering if we could save money by getting rid of that and just using o cell phones. Thanks again – I really appreciate all the time you have put into your responses!

    • carrie8

I have only had a cell phone for at least a dozen years. I don’t have kids. If I did have small children (of the age that didn’t have their own phones), I think I would want an old school landline phone–just so there’s a central phone that doesn’t need to be charged, can’t get broken or lost, etc.

    • elise

Haven’t ever had a landline. We use cricket wireless (at&t.)

    • Momof3divas

We haven’t had a landline in 11years. By the time you pay taxes and fees on your landline, you’re about even with the add on price of a cell phone.

    • Kimberly

No landline we have one phone that is on boost mobile smart phone $40 unlimited everything with 2.5gb of 4g (drop to 3g after) and one phone on tracfone for $99 I got a smart phone 1200 minutes, 1200 texts and 1200mb of data form QVC. I have had it about 8 months and am not even halfway through that. Anytime I need to make alot of phone calls hubby and I switch phones since he doesnt really use it except to call me while he is at work or school he usually focuses on that so no phone needed.

    • Amy

We have had Ooma, internet phone, for a few years now. You choose your own phone number, not on any marketing lists and you get the benefit of having a landline and not giving out cell to everyone. Also, we have our cell phones connected to our base so when we’re home our cell phones ring through the “home line” number ringing all phones and notifying what phone is receiving the call. We pay $4.95 a month for Ooma. My husband is s techno geek!!

    • Damien Barber

I say u dont even need landline with kids. Cell phones are reliable these days and everyone has one and you or another responsible adult will be around your kids with a cell phone anyway. Only exception is areas that have bad cell coverage still.

  14. Hope

I will be cutting cable in 2 weeks as there is only a couple shows I watch and everything else that my son or BF watches is on the sling channels. I think I will be doing the $25 to add the extra disney channels for my 1 year old ( And myself as well lol) I am so glad ABC family is on there as I can not miss my Pretty Little Liars fix. Other than that CW is the only other channel I watch and I can stream that free as well. My only question is what streaming device to get? Roku3? AppleTv? Or amazon tv?

    • Kimberly

Honestly there are so many factors I would buy them all and try them out. I hated the roku and just stuck with using my kindle fire connected to the TV. Not an option for sling I think but I know people who love appleTV and some who love amazon tv. Walmart and amazon do not care why you return something so no loss.

    • TW

If you have a lot of movies/shows on iTunes, I’d recommend getting the Apple TV. Great device, easy to use, great HD picture quality. We are iTunes nerds and have tons of movies and shows on our account, so our house is full of Apple TVs. But if you don’t have a huge collection in iTunes, then definitely go with the Roku3 (which I wish we would’ve done before building our iTunes collection). So many more features, and the Roku 3 gives you the HD picture quality as well. I got my parents the Fire stick for Christmas and honestly, its pretty awesome and easy to use. You can access your amazon stuff on the Roku though, so there’s really no reason to choose the Fire stick or Fire TV over a Roku 3. HTH!

    • Damien Barber

My bluray player streams hulu, netflix, amazon and many others as does my xbox so i have not had to worry about that. i did just get the free amazon fire stick with this offer, so i will try it out. i have also thought abput chromecast in the past but since i can stream free through options above and if all else fails use my tablet connected to the tv through hdmi i never felt a need to pay money for a streamer.

  15. Erica

We cut cable and Internet 2 years ago but am thinking of getting Internet. What Internet do you guys use/recommend?

    • April

I have the same question I want to get internet also as we don’t have cable or internet and don’t know where to start to get the lowest price. The prices I’ve seen so far is outrageous lol.

    • Damien Barber

i got a $29.99/mo promotion through comcast for 25Mb (lasts 1 year, then see about getting a new promotion or threaten to leave… or leave to another company if that fails). Shop around cable companies, centurylink, or att/ verizon internet services (if available in your area)

  16. MamaL

Seriously need some help understanding how all of this works.
We don’t watch any live TV except sports.
We have uverse on 4 TV’S which all have boxes. We use the uverse dvr like no other. However we spend over $250. a month for uverse including internet, fax line, & tv bundle!
It’s insane & a waste of $ & I need to yet don’t know how to cut back on what.
Where are you getting Wifi if you cut your cable? Does each tv have to have its own device to stream? Any options for DVR?

    • shopper

Have you talked to the retention department with your provider? They can adjust prices much more than plain ole customer service.

All providers have Internet available without bundles.

      • MamaL

Yes, but I’m more interested in doing what y’all are doing – getting rid of everything. I have Netflix, Amazon Prime plus Uverse.
So, if I wanted to get rid of everything, would I just subscribe to basic cable for wifi?
When you have Netflix and Hulu, etc. do you have to have a device for each tv? Are there dvr’s you can purchase?

        • shopper

Ok. You’ll want just internet, it’s separate from basic cable which is just for tv. Take a look on the provider’s website for just Internet, comes in speeds.

If you have a Smart tv then the apps, netflix and hulu are already there. If not, then a device is needed like Amazon fire which works with prime and has the Netflix, hulu apps. Each tv would need a device, but can use the same accounts. There aren’t dvr’s as the programs aren’t live, and you have control of the show plays.

        • marlene

I have a shared wifi with about 39 mbps with my family memeber next door. I have a smart tv in my living room can watch netflix on it. I have a antenna connected to the roof outside i live 50 miles from l.a. can watch any basic channel which is so many now. I have a newer dvd that u can watch netflix on and youtube if u like and 3 ipads we also watch netflix on and we only pay 8.99 for netflix we only watch tv for about and hour a day.

        • Amy

You can use Tivo for DVR’s. Different models but we have basic and mini for bedroom allows you to record up to 4 shows at once and watch in either location.

    • Damien Barber

There are lots of different options for streaming (some depend on how convenient you want things). First of all of you have an internet connected tv or bluray player it can already stream. Second game systems like xbox and ps3/4 can already stream many services through apps. Third, if all else fails you can connect a laptop or tablet through hdmi cord (make sure your laptop has the appropriate connection for the cord you are buying… my laptop just needs an hdmi to hdmi, but my surface tablet needs hdmi to mini video port)… this also assumes your tv has an hdmi, but all newer tvs have at least one if not two or three. This last option requires you to have to get up every time you want to change what you are watching or start a new program… unless you can have your laptop next to you. The final option is buying a streaming device. They range from $35 for a stick like chromecast or fire stick to around $100 for amazon fire tv box or roku box (i think roku is around that area but have not priced it).

  17. JA

We are a sports crazy family, not just average ESPN watchers. Is there any way to get NHL, MLB or NFL network? What about the local cable sports channel, like FoxSports or Root? Or like a Center Ice package? I could quit TV completely if it wasnt for my sports addiction! 🙂

  18. Jenn

our cable company gave us a great deal $50 for cable, Internet and HBO. We decided that we watch too much tv and called to cancel the cable part but keep the Internet. WOW they said ok, Internet will be $75 a month, WHAT? I can’t believe it’s cheaper for the whole thing than just Internet. Trying to find a better option

  19. Damien Barber

Just thought I’d mention to anyone who gets hulu plus mainly to stream network tv that you can stream it all free on network websites (abc.com, cbs.com, etc). To me hulu plus doesnt add anything that netflix and prime dont have so as lomg as I have one of those I dont have hulu and then i just use a tablet or laptop to stream from the website or apps and then connect it to my tv through hdmi port. if you have another reason to have hulu as well as netflix or prime or just have hulu plus then so be it, but thought i’d mention that.

    • Kelly

Thanks Damien. For those so us that are technically challenged (mainly me 😊), do you need to do anything special or just simply connect the two? Thanks!

  20. Rachel

Any idea how long this promo will last?
