  1. An Education in Domestication

I took advantage of my teacher discount at NY&CO last night and got three pairs of pants for $45!! Yay!

Any educator worth their degree will tell you that we only do this because we love it (and for me that’s true) but it is nice to see some appreciation since words of appreciation can come so infrequently in this profession.

  2. Katie

    Chipotle doing anything this year?

    • Daphne

Last I checked they weren’t 🙁 I called a few local Cipotle and also asked on their FB page and they said they weren’t doing anything this year.

    • CW

It doesn’t look like it. I saw nothing and a friend googled it and found an article that they are not doing the BOGO this year. Really bummed!

    • Lindak

Too bad. They also did away with the buy a gift card get a freebie last Xmas. I did receive a BOGO from them last week for entering their Tough Mudder contest though.

    • Kolby Wolfley

They are doing BOGO but they are doing it tomorrow because they figure people were going to be going there today anyways for Cinco de Mayo

  3. Susan

My daughter is a kindergartner so I’m new to this teacher appreciation thing – what would be a nice gift for her teacher? I don’t know anything personal about her.

    • Clair

Gift cards are always nice cause they get so much candy and teacher themed stuff!

    • Tia

My school’s suggestion list (yes, they actually passed out a list which I thought was a bit much) was note/card from student, favorite beverage/candy, school supply item or pampering item. Today, my 5 yr old took a short note she wrote by herself and I’ll send a $5 GC to Dunkin Donuts (she’s a coffee drinker) later in the week.

      • Sara

It isn’t a bit much. We work hard all year long. We deserve something we actually want.

        • Robert

You get paid for working hard. A card or a note would be very nice without the expectation of a gift or gift card. Cookies etc.

          • Elena

We do get paid for working hard, but our salary does not reflect the pay of others with our education nor does it take into account the countless hours at night. It feels good to be appreciated. Of course I knew that going into teaching (my mom is a teacher). That being said, a card, note, or a hug would make my day especially since I work in two poverty schools, and I know that might be all they can afford.

My daughter’s school did send a note home, but it suggested on Wednesday to bring a note, on Thursday something sweet, and Friday a single flower. My two schools I work at did not send anything home.

        • Michelle

I do work hard all year long, however I would never send a note to my students giving suggestions for teacher appreciation gifts! It’s the job I chose because I love it. Best gift I could get is a hug from your child and a verbal thank you from the parents. I just want to know I’m doing a good job.

        • TG

Sara, I don’t think Tia was implying that the suggestion list was a “bit much” for honoring teachers. It’s a “bit much” to provide an actual list of “acceptable gifts”. Any gift from a child should be received as wonderful.

      • Mary Ellen

I’m a teacher and I think the school suggesting you buy a gift is insane. I’d hate being told that I had to buy something for someone.

    • 1luv

I do the dollar tree gift cards bc everything I myself buy for the classroom treasure box comes from the dollar store…so do seasonal decorations, awards, etc.
You can also find tons of ideas on pinterest if you have the time to create something!

      • Dawn

That’s a great idea! I just spent $58 at Dollar Tree for my students’ Mother’s Day gifts and props for the end of the year school play. A gift card would be awesome. ☺️

        • Tonya

Dawn, I read your post and just had to tell you thank you! My child is obviously not in your class, but as a mommy it touches me that you spent that much of your own money {and I’m sure a lot of time too} for Mother’s Day gifts for your students to take home! I’m certain that those gifts will mean more than you ever hear to the mommies of your students. You’re awesome! 🙂

    • Amy

As a teacher, I LOVE getting classroom supplies. We get a certain amount yearly ,but when they are gone, they are gone. So, I end up buying pencils, Kleenex, Germ-X, etc. It makes my day when I get a box of pencils, because we sure need them! 🙂

  4. Veronica D

I received an email from my local Culvers that tomorrow, May 5, they are offering a free value basket to teachers and support staff when they show their staff badge. May not be available at all Culvers, so maybe call to check first.

  5. Natalie

The coffee bean and tea leaf “participating locations” link isn’t working.

  6. Amy

It’s nurses week too. Any list of discounts/freebies for us? Don’t get me wrong I love teachers and without them I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today…but…none of us would be alive if we didn’t have nurses either ;). Happy nurses week amd teachers week!!

    • Abbey

I am a nurse also. Our local chick fil a is giving away free coffee or a breakfast entree this week for Nurse’s Week. That’s the only thing I have heard of for nurses.

    • Brittany

I agree Amy! I’m a Nurse too and think we’re pretty awesome as well 🙂

    • Pam

I’m also a nurse, and was wondering the same thing; seems like these are more focused on teachers, but it’s also our week! Happy nurses and teachers week!

    • Kristin

Nurses get free iced coffee at Dunkin Donuts this week. All I have seen so far. ; (

    • Melinda

I think Cinnabon is giving free buns again this year.

    • Laura

I’m also a nurse and was hoping to see some deals for us! I saw something going around on FB about free iced coffee at Dunkin but it appears to be from last year. Can anyone confirm if they are doing something this year?

  7. Ashley C

I always stock a medium size Tupperware container with school supply items that I purchase during the big August School Supply sales (always posted on this website!!) I just grab a few more of everything when I get stuff for my kids and then box it up and gift it to the teachers 🙂 often, especially in schools that have funding troubles (which lets face it is MOST schools) teachers end up having to buy much of their own supplies to make up for students who run out throughout the year and don’t bring in more. Not to mention all the printer paper (yes, some schools make teachers provide their own), dry erase markers, grading stickers and pens, etc… I also send in sweets to our homeroom teachers and this year we are providing a pizza lunch from a local pizza place to all the teachers and staff (there are only 26 in our small school, so its not that huge of an expense… It wouldn’t be feasible for a large school to provide lunch).

  8. CW

PDQ (it’s a fresh chicken place in roughly 5 states including FL, TX, AL) is doing a free combo meal for teachers with school ID tomorrow May 5 -evening I think it’s 4-9 pm. Choices are 3 PC tenders, chicken sandwich, or chicken salad combo meal. 🙂

  9. Puchi

I have question. My first son goes to preschool. And I got letter from school ask school supply items to donate for teacher appreciation week. I have some donation items but should I give something for his teacher? Or donation items is what they asking for, so don’t have to anything for teacher?

    • Michelle

If the school sent a notice requesting the supplies for your sons teacher, than I would say this is enough. But I think if it is within your means, something a little personal in addition would be great! There are tons if places that offer $5 gift cards (dunkin donuts, dollar tree, I think redbox) or even a note signed by your son. I’m sure anything you do whether in addition to the requested supplies or not will be greatly appreciated.

  10. consuela

I am a teacher. I would rather receive supplies than anything else. Pencils and paper are #1 needs. I can never have enough pencils!!!

    • Tara

I agree 100%! I can’t even begin to tell you how much of my own money I spent this year. I know it was more than normal.

  11. Kathryn

I called my local Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and the employees didn’t know what I was talking about. I called Chick fil a and spoke to the manager. He said that, while they aren’t doing a specific promotion for teachers, he would be more than happy to collect some freebies and coupons for me to pick up just for my teachers! What a blessing!

  12. Marie

Each kid in my son’s class is bringing one flower. Then we also all chipped in for a gift card to a favorite restaurant.

  13. Mary

I have a $20 off $75 if anyone would like to trade. Please email

    • Mary

From Vera Bradley – sorry, forgot to mention that!

  14. Ann

As a parent, I donate supplies throughout the year (that I purchase on the cheap during back to school or clearance sales) but for Teacher Appreciation I get them something they can treat themselves to! I try to figure out what they like and get a couple $5 gift cards to a few places (examples…Starbucks, Chipotle, movie tix, carwash or a local restaurant). They seem super excited when they open their gifts.

  15. Bobbi

Thanks to the teachers who taught me nursing. Happy teachers and nurses week. Where’s the nurse’s deals?

    • Erin

Is there an editor’s week? I produce and edit books for both teachers and nurses.

      • e

Erin, let me know your email and I will send you a gift card to Amazon. The people who put together the books that make the education possible are definitely overlooked.

        • Sandy

          So sweet of you!

  16. Denise

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week, Teachers! Many educators in my family, so I know it’s a labor of love. Thank you for all you do!

FYI any one looking for gift ideas, check out pinterest😉

  17. denise

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week, Teachers! Many educators in my family, so I know it’s a labor of love. Blessings 🙂

  18. Brit

Friendlys has an in store coupon for a free 3 scoop Sunday, no purchase necessary for teachers

  19. Melissa

All McDonald’s in Arizona are giving teachers a tag that they can use for free McCafe beverages through the end of the year. All they have to do is buy a McCafe drink tomorrow, May 5th between 5am and 8 pm and show a teacher’s badge or some other proof to get the key tag.

  20. Chrissy

When my kids were in school, I would bring in breakfast (a biscuit, jam, fresh fruit…simple) for his teachers during Teacher Appreciation week. Our parent group also did a buffet lunch for the staff on an early release day, and one day we did “cookies and milk” delivery to each classroom at the end of the day

  21. Alicia

Our Chipotle is doing BOGO tomorrow.

  22. Stacy

I know that everyone should be recognized but most jobs don’t have their employees pay money to do be able to do their job. Just saying most people don’t buy their own band aids, pencils, books, paper, stickers and glue to just get through the day. That said gift cards rock 🙂

    • Maile

    • Natalie

Agreed! Most of us spend upwards of a thousand a year, and I’m a school counselor!

      • Forget me not alaska

I understand about 3 thousand a year and I work at a private school so my salary is even less.

  23. syeo2013

Wish they was a way we homeschool moms would be able to enjoy this treats too! 🙂

    • Reives

    • Sarah

Have your kids write you a thank you card. Done!

  24. celinda

I received an email from Grimaldi’s pizza for 15% off this week for educators.

  25. Terri

I am a former teacher and now a high school counselor. Don’t forget the high school teachers….One time I ordered lunch for each of my son’s high school teachers – one per day. I ordered froma local deli and let them know ahead of time that lunch was coming. It was easy and not too expensive. They still talk about it and it was about 15 years ago. They said that no one ever does much for them.

  26. Stephanie

Chiptole does NOT appreciate teachers! I saw an add online for Chiptole, buy one get one free for today, teacher appreciation day. So I was so excited (mostly my husband was!) that we went out of our way to get Chiptole for dinner. Sadly & annoyingly they said they weren’t doing it even though I showed them the online promotion for this day!! It clearly stated it was for today!! So disappointed in Chiptole with false advertising. I am usually a regular but this certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They lost my business due to unethical practice!
